Hello I know its been a LONG time since this topic was active but I have an idea to protect privacy. Instead of giving out all of your info, like mailing address ect. why not give a contact address like email or IM or something. Even a cell phone if you want. Then, only trade/barter/sell/buy with/from people who will meet you somewhere other then your house. Like Mcdonalds or the park or somewhere in your town or neighboring town that you feel safe. There are 'loop holes' there too, but it's a little better then giving a stranger all of your contact info blindly.

Another way would be to work through a trusted 3rd party.

I know I joked about identiy and all, but I take the prospect of Identity Theft VERY seriously.  I have read a lot about it, and am taking steps to insure that, in the event of such an occurance, I would find out about it farely quickly, which can keep the damage to a minimum.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Besides identity theft, there is also the matter of stalking. Everyone please keep in mind that you never know who you are dealing with on the internet. Be careful   yes, I am a bit paranoid lol

Nobody would wanta stalk me, and if somebody wants to use my SS number to work and pay into my SS account that'd be super, as I might even really get to retire one of these days!!! Seriously tho, I've run into people that were so paranoid that I don't think they should have even been on the internet at all. Most of the time I think business is just a matter of sharing a mailing address and maybe a few phone calls, and I live out where nobody would ever show up anyhow, even if I was paying them. Why do u think I learned to fix everything myself??? Repairmen never wanted to drive that fasr out in the country!!! My regular customers had the same problem til they found me. I've been online since 1999 and aside from a broken heart and a few failed relationships that started online, I've never really been burned on an internet date for business or pleasure. Life is not worth living if we can't trust to some degree. Trusting too much can get us into trouble, but trusting too little can be just as bad.

What I worry about online is coming across an enemy, or stalker, using a false identity, for malicious purposes. I started out playing online Euchre, and made a few enemies at the game site so I was really careful not letting anyone know who I was, but Im getting better
