Hello and thanks for the group.... May 06, 2005 6:49 PM
Years ago when I was 9 or 10 I went to Flippers Sea School in Marathon Fl with my Grandparents, and i got to meet and swim with teh original Flipper. In actuality Flipper was Mitzi, and this was her new home, and when I slipped into the water the touch and feel of her was one that I never forgot......... I was mezmerized. I fell in love quickly and never forgot how I felt. I went back 2 years later and Mitzi had passed and they erected a statue of her and I swam with "Bebe" and it was again magical.
Since that time it has changed to Dolphin Research Center, and still has alot of the dolphins I had met "children" and " grandchildren. I was awestruck when I came back some 25 years later, see how wonderful it was and how well they were treated. Knowing they were born into captivity and it was the only thing they knew alot better, but they if they chose to leave the jump over the pen was easy for them.
Since that time ( after swimming with them) I have chosen a life surrounded by animals, and every other living thing on earth. There still is this love that goes beyond words for dolphins. Because of the love for these animals I have chosen as a career in epizoology, to help find reasons and cures for their aliments. There is nothing more powerful then a mind ready for change!
Sincerely
Shannon

Wow. This is just incredible. Your story is truly awe-inspiring.
I would really love to swim w/ dolphins; I just haven't had the chance yet.
I think it's great u chose the profession u did.
I'm also glad to hear about the research center, about how well the dolphins there r taken care of, & how they can leave if they want to. This may b a place I would want to c.

Years ago I took a trip to Panama City where I had the chance to go on a glass bottom boat ride to an island. On the way to the island the guests (including me) got a good look at some bottlenose(I think) dolphins up close and in the wild. A man in a boat a few yards away was hand feeding them. That was the first time I really ever seen a dolphin up close.
Ever since I've found dolphins to be very interesting. Just recently I read a book called "to touch a wild dolphin" by Rachel Smolker. It is by far one of the best books I've ever read, I would suggest any one who is interested in dolphins read it.
Welcome to the group! And thank u for sharing your experience w/ us! I've seen dolphins b-4, but never that close! And the book sounds like a good one; thanx for recommending it!

I work as a wildlife biologist in Fresno, CA. I work mainly with the endangered mammals of California, like the kit fox and Mohave ground squirrel, but I also work with endangered birds, like the Western Burrowing Owl. I've been a biologist for 10 years. Earned a MS from Fresno State in 2001.

Hi Everyone, Just joined and was invited by Stephen. It looks like we have some great professionals amongst us, as well, which can steer us in the right direction regarding information and good petitions to sign. I just spent the last few hours going to various web sites and signing petitions. Must learn how to put these web site in the group so that some of you guys can help out if you don't already know about these sites.
Recently I was disappointed to learn how the Care2 petitions work and that many of the personal petitions don't even reach their destination, so I have decided not to sign any further personal petition until Care2 comes up with a better of way of handling them or monitering them.
Unfortuately I haven't see a dolphin or a whale and I don't even know how to swim for that matter, but I love all animals, so that is why I joined Care2 to try and help them as much as I can.
welcome elini m you are our 100th member thanks for joining please feel free to add petitions and let me know because i cant do that and invite all your whale and dolphin friends to the group and post any article you like
