Michael Vick has been sentenced to 23 months in prison for financing a dogfighting ring and helping to kill pit bulls. Vick initially denied any wrong doing but eventually admitted he was deeply involved in a dogfighting enterprise and endorsed the killing of dogs who did not fight well by drowning or hanging.
Vick's sentence came too late for all the dogs that were killed and victimized as part of his dogfighting activities.
Please urge the NFL to ban Michael Vick permanently. Professional players are role models for children and millions of people and someone with a record of animal cruelty shouldn't be allowed to set a bad example. Dogfighting is unacceptable and the NFL must act accordingly.
Sign this petition to ask the NFL to take a stand against dogfighting once and for all!
Help Stop Cruelty to Animals in China October 10, 2007 10:45 AM
TO: All People Who Care
There has been much attention on the trade in cat and dog fur recently. This is an issue that has struck a chord with consumers and politicians alike, reflecting a widespread repugnance at the idea of wearing the skin and fur of companion animals.
Investigations by animal welfare organisations have revealed the suffering caused to millions of animals by this trade. Many cats and dogs are killed inhumanely in countries such as China where there is little or no animal welfare legislation.
The European Parliament has finally adopted a Regulation to ban the import into the EU of cat and dog fur. The move ends many years of campaigning by animal welfare organisations and politicians to end a trade which causes terrible animal suffering. The ban will apply from 31 December 2008.
The Ban will not stop the fur trade, only in Cats and Dogs, but the barbaric treatment can be stopped.
The offending countries must improve welfare standards for all animals if it wants to do business with Europe. They must provide resources to help the Fur producers to find alternative incomes which do not involve animal cruelty. This will encourage investment from developed countries who can also help.
Please keep the pressure up and do what you can to help.
Contact your own governments to put political pressure on the offending countries.
All UK Citizens please sign this petition to the Prime Minister

The Pigeon is mankinds oldest feathered friend, this bird helped save lives before the telegraph or phone was invented, they flew the skies delivering messages from hospital to hospital, they fought next to our troops in many wars including the Iraq war, this bird shares the sky with other birds and currently is being slaughtered accross the USA by the numbers just for the fun of it as they are not protected by any laws. Don't Exempt Manatees from The Marine Mammal Protection Act!
The House of Representatives recently voted not only to gut the Endangered Species Act, but in a last minute attempt to please developers, Representative Adam Putnam (R-FL) added an amendment to exclude the endangered manatee from protections under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).
Manatees are found over publicly-owned submerged lands -- the water bottoms of rivers, estuaries, and bays. These lands are like public parks -- they are managed by the state in trust for all the people. Virtually everyone agrees that imperiled species should be protected when they inhabit public lands, but this amendment leaves the fragile manatee out to dry.
Under Congressman Putnam's amendment many dock-building projects that would likely hurt or kill manatees will be able to move forward with little or no conservation measures. This amendment will exact a major toll on manatees because boat strikes continue to be the largest known cause of manatee deaths in Florida.
The Putnam amendment is headed for the Senate and we must stop it from passing. Sign this petition to stop the exemption!

URGENT: Urge Illinois Municipality to Pull Cruel Beaver Traps Immediately

Whale Call is a peak Australian based international environmental organization, which is concerned about matters of the conservation of the oceans and protection and research of whales and dolphins, and opposes any slaughter of whales and dolphins of any species whatsoever, and of the over-exploitation of ocean fish stocks. A plea to inform the Japanese public to lobby their respective Prefectures, Governments and the Japanese Royal Family to put a halt to the unnecessary slaughter of whales, dolphins and ocean fish stocks. On November 15th 2006 the Japanese whaling fleet of 6 vessels with a target of 850 minke whales, 10 fin-whales, and 50 humpbacks under the guise of ‘scientific research’ which is highly criticized by environmentalists and other nations, set sail from the southern Japanese port of Shimonoseki for the Southern Ocean to commence their annual whale hunt and inhumane slaughter of these harmless mammals, before returning to Japan in April 2007. Most of these whales are near the brink of extinction and it is unnecessary to kill even 1 whale for scientific research purposes as successful non-lethal methods for whale research are in use today.
Don't Strip ESA Protections From Wolves in WY and ID
Soon, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to release a proposal to strip wolves of crucial Endangered Species Act protections across most of Wyoming and de-list wolves in Idaho, where the state is poised to kill up to 75% of the wolves living in the Lolo district of the Clearwater National Forest.
This proposal could allow the use of aerial gunning and other lethal control methods to kill as many as two-thirds of the wolves in Wyoming and as many as 54 of Idaho’s 65 wolf packs!

The Forest Service wants to make it easier to poison and kill prairie dogs on the American plains -- risking creatures like burrowing owls, hawks, swift fox and the critically endangered black-footed ferret.
Prairie dogs play an essential role in the plains ecosystem. Already there may be too few prairie dogs in the National Grasslands to sustain local populations of some of the animals that depend on them, including burrowing owls, swift fox, and the endangered black-footed ferret.
Wildlife management should be based on science, not on politics. The ability to poison is limited by the current Nebraska National Forest Management Plan to avoid the temptation for managers to cave into pressure from grazing lessees and politicians seeking private gain from public lands at the expense of wildlife. Do not remove this safety net by amending the plan to allow poisoning anywhere on the Grasslands!
Animals on Fur-farms spend their lives in, dirty, cramped, crates. They are exposed to all weather, and are denied of most natural behaviors. Ranch-raised foxes are kept in cages only 2.5 feet square with up to four animals per cage. Fur farmers use the cheapest killing methods available, including suffocation, electrocution, and poisoning. These killing methods are often ineffective and animals wake up while being skinned. JCPenney knows about the suffering that goes into every fur-trimmed coat, hat, or bag, yet it continues sell real fur. Other top retailers including Polo Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, Jones Apparel, Ann Taylor, and others—that have already adopted permanent fur-free policies.

Save Man's Best Friend from the Dog Meat Trade - Say YES to House Bill 2991
Because this barbaric commercial industry provides a steady flow of income not only to the traders but to officials and police officers, the dog meat trade remains unscathed from the Welfare Act. However, House Bill 2991 is currently pending in the Committee on Revision of Laws that provides a stiffer penalty to dog meat traders. Introduced by Representative Francis Escudero, the creation of the bill was based on the need to upgrade an Act that, as noble as the objectives of the law are, the traders remain elusive because the penalty is unrealistic. The penalty must be upgraded.
OUR GOAL is to obtain OVER 50,000 signatures by APRIL 30, 2007.The Bill is expected to be addressed by Congress in May 2007. It is obvious that the only way we can ensure that dogs in the Philippines are protected is to place the Philippines government under the international spotlight.
We are asking this agency to reconsider their practice of euthanizing owner surrenders as in the case of Satch, see story below, where the owner just couldn't take care of him. This puppy could have at least been given a chance to be adopted out. After all you keep strays for at least 72 hours. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/878261387
Our friend's daughter who this dog belonged to had gotten loose and ran away. One of the neighbor's saw the dog and knew who it belonged too but called the police regardless. The police got him and took him to a shelter and the shelter in turn threw the dog in some sort of pen and refused to give the dog food or water. The dog died from this treatment as a direct result dying at the shelter. This shelter needs to be closed, if it did this once no telling how many more times it will do this to other poor unsuspecting pets who have homes.

6-Month Old Beagle Puppy Shot in the Head 10/1 "ONLY" 40 Signatures
According to Shelby County Animal Control Officer Donald Kendrick, the puppy was shot in the head and left to die near Highways 62 and 85 in Vincent around July 5. While the dog survived the shotgun blast, she lost an eye and needed multiple operations to remove buckshot and repair skull fractures. Kendrick said he found the dog hiding, fearful and with a “horrific” head wound. The officer said that animals with such severe injuries are usually euthanized; however, in this case, he said the dog was too friendly to put down.
A stray kitten was shot with an arrow and investigators said they believe it was deliberate. Workers at the Humane Society in Dayton on Nicholas Road have named the stray kitten Rocky because they said he is a fighter.
So far he has survived being shot with a two-foot arrow and has survived a two - hour long operation.
Investigators said his internal injuries were massive.
Dayton police said they have a suspect they believe shot the cat and are seeking animal cruelty charges against that person.
Animal cruelty officials at the Humane Society said there are ways to deal with stray cats in neighborhoods.
Sharon Exline of the Humane Society, " We work out a plan to take live traps to them and then trap the cats and bring them here."

Primates possess many qualities which were once considered solely human attributes. The central nervous system of Primates and humans is organized in almost the same way, and there are similarities between the social behavior, emotional needs and intellectual capabilities of humans and other Primates. Primates demonstrate the ability to reason, to exhibit friendship and altruism, to suffer fear and stress.
UK and EU legislation has been partially expanded to supposedly protect their specific requirements in the laboratory and afford them a 'higher' status than other animal species under Directive 86/609/EEC. The reality is, however, that this legal provision does not prevent thousands of primates each year enduring terrible pain, suffering and death in the laboratory. . Experiments that would be unthinkable if performed on human subjects should also be considered morally unacceptable when carried out on our genetic cousins.
Researchers use primates as 'models' of human diseases on which the development and progression of such diseases can be monitored and treated. However primates, like other animals, make poor 'models' and attempting to extrapolate test results from one species to another is a fundamentally flawed research methodology. Despite their similarities, there are also many significant differences between humans and others Primates.
The fundamental flaw underlying the research of human diseases in primates is that researchers can only attempt to artificially induce similar superficial symptoms of human diseases in Primates, which is very different from studying a naturally occurring disease in a biologically relevant animal i.e. a human patient.
Primates who are removed from their normal habitat, deprived of environmental stimulants and social interaction, make poor 'models' on which to record the 'natural' development of disease or infection. Like human beings, primates react very differently to disease or illness depending on their physical and psychological states.
The reality is, despite what the research industry would have us believe, primates do not provide a reliable 'model' of the human being. After decades of research on primates, scientists have repeatedly failed to make significant breakthroughs in fully understanding the onset and progression of HIV or AIDS, cot death, epilepsy, Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease, or cancer - all human conditions which have been thoroughly, though pointlessly, explored through research on Primates.
Martha’s Vineyard is the quintessential New England vacation destination, complete with quaint villages, charming harbors, and gorgeous beaches. People seeking respite have flocked to the island for generations to be greeted by friendly Vineyarders, whose economy depends on the seasonal influx of tourists.
But the idyllic island image cloaks a sinister ritual sanctioned by local officials. Each summer, entrants in the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament hook sharks; bleed, suffocate, or repeatedly gaff them; and string them up on docks in gruesome, sometimes mocking displays—all for prizes and gory glory. Last year in 2005, some 240 boats killed approximately 2,500 sharks in the span of 3 days.
Mass shark killing contests are not only cruel, but they also target members of already imperiled populations of slow breeding and ecologically important shark species. Like whales, most species of sharks reproduce late in life—some are as old as 20 years—and give birth to few young. It can take decades for populations to recover from being killed in large numbers by fishermen.
Most shark populations are already in jeopardy. A study reported in the journal Science in 2003 estimated that all recorded shark species, with the exception of Makos, have declined by more than 50% in the previous 8 to 15 years. The situation remains dire, despite recent international efforts to protect shark species.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has assessed the conservation status of 62 species of sharks. Of these, 21 were classified as "endangered"—meaning they face a very high risk of extinction in the near future—or "vulnerable"—meaning they face a high risk of extinction in the not so distant future. The other 31 species were ranked "near threatened," indicating that their status is approaching "vulnerable."
Of the 15 shark species found in New England, home of the Monster Shark Tournament, the IUCN has classified the Smooth Dogfish as critically endangered and the White Shark as endangered. Three other species are considered vulnerable and eight are near-threatened. The population data on the remaining two species is insufficient to evaluate their conservation status.
ESPN Aggrandizes the Tournament
In 2004 and 2005, ESPN broadcast the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament as if it were a legitimate sport. Many in the nation were appalled and called on ESPN to stop aggrandizing the cruelty. The network refused.
ESPN and The Boston Big Game Fish Club has its 20th Annual tournament scheduled for July 20–22, 2006 and ESPN plans to broadcast it.

Primate experimentation in the United States is out of control. In the last ten years the number of primate experiments funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has increased by 76%. Statistics based on data published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reveal that primate experimentation in the U.S. has reached an all time high with over 120,000 of our closest relatives suffering and dying in laboratories during the last two years.
Repetition is rampant among NIH-funded projects. Currently 170 National Institutes of Health projects study neural information processing in macaque monkeys. 75 grants fund examinations of cocaine in primates. 70 experiments examine vision in macaque monkeys. These experiments continue for decades wasting millions of tax dollars and victimizing primates for an entire lifetime.
We must all continue to work together to insure continued progress for animals in laboratories.
There are over two hundred primate laboratories in the
U.S. If we are to change the fate of primates within these many facilities we will need the support of activists across the United States. Please contact us ASAP to get involved in this crucial campaign EPE@etaep.org.

"Oprah do a show on pets, shelters, puppy mills etc..". February is Prevent-A-Litter month, the perfect time to urge Oprah again to devote a show to the pet overpopulation crisis. We need your help! Take action.
After almost five months, homeless puppies are popping up everywhere amid the rubble left by Hurricane Katrina. Although more than 6000 pets were saved, thousands of animals are running loose in neighborhoods, and breeding.
This situation highlights a heartbreaking, chronic problem in our country. Each year, millions of healthy, adoptable cats and dogs are killed because there are not enough homes for them all. Pet owners need to be educated about the importance of spaying and neutering. Urge Oprah to dedicate a show to the pet overpopulation crisis.
Did you know that?:
3-4 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year.
In 7 years, one female cat and her young can produce 420,000 cats.
In 6 years, one female dog and her young can produce 67,000 dogs.
It costs US taxpayers an estimated $2 billion each year to round up, house, kill, and dispose of homeless animals.
This tragic predicament could be easily avoided if each pet owner spayed or neutered their pet. It’s safe, affordable and improves pet health. Yet many pet owners say they simply have not bothered to do it yet!
Saving the Bison is very dear to my heart. An animal once thought extinct it has made a comeback only to be targeted for killing AGAIN! The Governor of Montana is one of the people allowing this. Good News for the ANCC Cats January 10, 2006 8:08 PM
I got the following announcement from the group Alley Cat Allies:
Feral Power! Campaign Update
Victory for the cats and members of the Army Navy Country Club!
In a story that originally ran in the Washington Post just before Christmas, and subsequently in newspapers nationwide, you may have read about the outdoor cats at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Virginia. Today, those cats safe from harm.
Working together, the Club, the caregivers, and Alley Cat Allies have developed an action plan to continue successfully managing this colony.
The Club cats have already been spayed/neutered and vaccinated. No kittens have been born in two years. Caregivers will continue to feed and oversee the cats. Alley Cat Allies will help to improve their situation and to ensure club members’ safety.
It is well known that animal control agencies in jurisdictions across the U.S. continue to practice outdated, ineffective, and deadly methods of cat “control.” Arlington County, where the Club is located, is one of them. The Animal Welfare League of Arlington recommends trapping and killing feral cats, despite knowing about humane alternatives and recommendations from several national animal protection organizations to adopt Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Fortunately, the Army Navy Country Club has a more progressive outlook.
Thank you to everyone who expressed concern and took action in defense of the cats!

The text of the UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF ANIMAL RIGHTS has been adopted from the International League of Animal Rights and Affiliated National Leagues in the course of an International Meeting on Animal Rights which took place in London from 21st to 23rd September 1977.
Universal Declaration of Animal Rights
Inasmuch as there is ample evidence that many animal species are capable of feeling, we condemn totally the infliction of suffering upon our fellow creatures and the curtailment of their behavioural and other needs save where this is necessary for their own individual benefit.
We do not accept that a difference in species alone (any more than a difference in race) can justify wanton exploitation or oppression in the name of science or sport, or for use as food, for commercial profit or for other human gain.
We believe in the evolutionary and moral kinship of all animals and declare our belief that all sentient creatures have rights to life, liberty and natural enjoyment.
We therefore call for the protection of these rights.

Considering that Life is one, all living beings having a common origin and having diversified in the course of the evolution of the species;
Considering that all living beings possess natural rights, and that any animal with a nervous system has specific rights;
Considering that the contempt for, and even the simple ignorance of these natural rights cause serious damage to nature and lead man to commit crimes against animals;
Considering that the coexistence of species implies a recognition by the human species of the right of other animal species to live;
Considering that the respect of humans for animals is inseparable from the respect of man for another man.
IT IS HEREBY PROCLAIMED:
Article 1 All animals are born equal and they have the same rights to existence.
Article 2 a) Every animal has the right to be respected. b) Man, like the animal species, cannot assume the right to exterminate other animals or to exploit them, thereby violating this right. He should use his conscience for the service of the animals. c) Every animal has the right to consideration, good treatment and the protection of man.
Article 3 a) No animal should be submitted to bad treatment or cruel actions. b) If the death of an animal is necessary, this should be sudden and without fear or pain.
Article 4 a) All animals belonging to a wild species have the right to live free in their natural environment, and have the right to reproduce. b) Each deprivation of freedom, even for educational purposes, is in opposition to this right.
Article 5 a) Every animal that usually lives in a domestic environment must live and grow to a rhythm natural to his species. b) Any change to this rhythm and conditions dictated by man for mercantile purpose, is a contradiction of this law.
Article 6 a) All animals selected by man, as companions must have a life corresponding to their natural longevity. b) To abandon an animal is a cruel and degrading action.
Article 7 Working animals must only work for a limited period and must not be worked to exhaustion. They must have adequate food and rest.
Article 8 a) Experiments on animals that cause physical and mental pain, are incompatible with animal rights, even if it is for medical, scientific, commercial or any other kind of experiment. b) A substitute technique must be investigated and developed.
Article 9 In the eventuality of an animal bred for food, it must be fed, managed, transported and killed without it being in fear or pain.
Article 10 a) No animal should be used for entertainment. b) Animal exhibitions and shows that use animals are incompatible with an animal's dignity.
Harrods had previously stopped selling fur in 1989, when the store was the flagship store of House of Fraser, the largest department store chain in the UK. Following years of protest, House of Frazer along with the other major department stores decided to remove their fur departments.
At the time, Mr al Fayed was quoted as saying "Our colour is green and it is my determination to make it greener. House of Fraser is Europe's biggest department stores group and we have a great responsibility."
In 1993, Al Fayed and Harrods split from the House of Fraser group. Since that time fur has gradually crept back into the store, and now Harrods is now once again a major supplier of real animal fur.
Recently Harrods has teamed up with the chairman of the British Fur Trade Association to launch a new fur collection. Frank Zilberkweit, owner of Hockley Furs in London as well as head of BFTA, has launched a new British fur label, and the collection goes on sale this Autumn, available exclusively at Hockleys shop and...Harrods.
When Harrods went fur-free in 1989, their then media director Michael Cole stated "The trade is not as acceptable now as it used to be" If Harrods thinks the fur trade is any more acceptable now than it was 15 years ago, they are making a serious mistake.
Millions of animals around the world continue to be killed for their fur.The majority of these animals are factory farmed in horrific conditions-living cramped in their own filth, being slaughtered by anal electrocution, neck breaking & gassing.
Fuelled by the insatiable demands of a cruel and callous fashion industry, cats and dogs, along with 40 million other animals, are slaughtered for their fur and sold internationally.
Innocent cats are strangled and slit open or drowned internally while other cats watch terrified
The dogs are tethered by a wire noose, then stabbed in the groin, the lucky ones bleed to death before being skinned, those less fortunate are skinned once blood loss renders them too weak to struggle. Some desperately try to escape in a pool of blood. This method of slaughter causes least damage to the animals' fur, thus preserving its market value.
This year, some five million dogs and cats will be killed in shelters. The vast majority can and should be placed into loving homes or should never enter shelters in the first place.
But there is hope. No Kill sheltering models, based on innovative, non-lethal programs and services, have already saved the lives of tens of thousands of animals. But instead of embracing No Kill, many shelters—and their national agency allies—cling to their failed models of the past, models that result in the killing of millions of dogs and cats in U.S. shelters every year.
No Kill is a revolution. And behind every revolution is a declaration—a statement of grievances, and a listing of rights and principles that underscore our great hope for the future. We assert that a No Kill nation is within our reach—that the killing can and should be brought to an end.
It is open to every individual, every group, and every agency that wants to bring about an end to the killing by implementing the programs and services that will establish a No Kill nation. Programs like ensuring public access to affordable spay/neuter services, allowing rescue groups to save animals on death row, and communitywide Trap-Neuter-Return for feral cats.
These are not radical concepts, but in the current sheltering world, one can be ostracized for daring to proclaim the simple truths that population control killing is not an act of kindness and that feral cats have a right to live.
Join us in speaking for those who can’t. In the length of time it will take you to read the Declaration, nearly one hundred dogs and cats will be needlessly killed.

Phase 2 Action for this petition is to send this petition again to the UN with added and extra strong supportive letters from various individuals & organizations when it hits 1,000,000 (million) signatures if Phase 1 Action failed or was ignored.
Phase 3 Action for this petition is to send this petition again to the UN with added and extremely strong supportive letters from various individuals & organizations when it hits 1,000,000,000 (billion) signatures if Phase 2 Action also failed and ignored.
I'm hoping there will be no need for Phase 4 Action but only wishing for a huge success!
Deadline:11-30-1999 (No Deadlines as this Petition may keep running to the next generations to achieve a few Billions of Signatures before it's submitted by someone that will be assigned later. If the current population is approximately 6 Billion, then I think we may need approximately 4 Billion Signatures before it's submitted. But please don't loose faith or hope. If we start now, we could achieve that goal somewhere in the future whether we're still here or not. All this is a small part in building something much more larger, someday! This is for the Animals, this is for their Kingdom and this is for their Nation!

23-year-old, Salvador Rodriguez, Mesa man upset with his wife tried to kill her dog by stabbing and hanging the animal six feet in the air with an electric cord, barbell and weights, police stated. He was arrested June 6 on suspicion of a felony charge of animal cruelty and criminal damage. We petition for a vigorous prosecution and mandatory psychological testing and counseling if he is found guilty.
Three teens who allegedly wanted to kill something "not human" are being held at a state youth center and under house arrest after they allegedly cut, stabbed and beat to death a dog that they stole from the yard of a local resident. We petition for the District Attorney to prosecute vigorously and seek jail time and mandatory psychological testing and counseling if these boys are convicted.
