We thought of many of those ideas on our own when planning our wedding.
We issued invitations either by phone or email.
We only invited family and a few close friends - keeping it a spiritual ritual rather than a circus.
We held the ceremony in our living room.
We printed the programs ourselves on recycled paper.
My dress was one that my daughter had bought several years ago for a friend's hand-fasting, and she asked me to wear it. I was honored to do so. My husband wore plain black slacks and a poet shirt that he had had made years ago when he was part of a touring theater company. Since we met at an audition, we thought one of his old costume pieces was an especially nice touch.
Since we had already combined households, we asked people to please not bring gifts.
We kept the refreshments simple - wine from a local vineyard, fresh flowers, fruit and veggies from our local Farmer's Market and our backyard garden, cheese from a local dairy. We did all the food prep ourselves in our kitchen the night before.
Since neither of us cares much for sweets, we opted not to have a cake.
We used cloth napkins and the china, silver, and crystal that my husband inherited from his grandmother - no disposables.
We composted the plate scrapings, and recycled the wine bottles.
We had a beautiful wedding, remained true to the respect for the earth that is a core belief of both our religions, and saved a pile of money.
