Elephants to have sad life
THE Asian elephant issue is indeed a sad one.
Forced from their habitat by logging, like many of our own native fauna, they are in danger of becoming endangered.
But how hypocritical can we be when we carry on about whales and elephants, the big guys of the planet, while at the same time allowing our own delightful little creatures to be poisoned off and-or left homeless by that same logging and habitat clearance?
Under zoo conditions in Melbourne and Sydney, it is apparently highly unlikely that they will breed.
And if a miracle should happen and a pair did, that baby would never be released back into the wild.
It would spend its whole life being gawked at by us humans.
As Eric Bogle sings, “Never knew there were worse things than dying”.
And just think how much of our endangered water supply theyll need to keep them happy.
