How great this is!
BOSTON The Humane Society wants state towns to start building tunnels for turtles.
The society says too many of endangered turtles are ending up as road kill.
The tunnels would give the turtles a route under roads where the slow-moving creatures are meeting their demise.
The Humane Society has tested a system that uses fencing to direct turtles inside the tunnels. It found that the turtles used the tunnels, which it said are relatively inexpensive.
Last spring, dozens of turtles were crushed by traffic along roadways in Braintree, Weymouth, Scituate and other areas.
The turtles venture out during nesting season, searching for places to lay eggs.
U-Mass wildlife biologist Scott Jackson said the tunnels will do more than protect individual turtles. He said they can help save entire populations.
