Downers Out cowMore than 18 months after the government promised to swiftly enact regulations to protect us from mad cow disease, we're still waiting for safeguards, including a permanent ban on meat from cattle too sick or injured to even stand -- animals known as "downers" -- in the human food supply. A permanent ban would not only help protect the public health, but also give producers an incentive to provide better care for cattle to keep them from going down in the first place. Urge Agriculture Secretary Johanns to permanently ban downers and then read how the government has dragged its own feet on providing true mad cow safeguards.
