More Health Concerns About Premarin & Prempro
Abused horses on the "pee line" to produce Premarin and Prempro Dear Pat,
The International Agency for Research on Cancer, the U.N.'s cancer research agency, has officially classified combined estrogen-progestogen Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) as "carcinogenic to humans." The agency reclassified the drug from "possibly carcinogenic" to "carcinogenic" after a thorough review of recently published research on HRT. Combined estrogen-progestogen HRT is marketed under the brand name "Prempro," part of the Premarin family of products manufactured by the pharmaceutical behemoth, Wyeth-Ayerst.
The panel of 21 U.N. scientists concluded that the evidence from several recent studies was consistent and reliable enough to significantly link Prempro to certain types of cancer, including breast cancer and endometrial cancer.
In order to produce the HRT drugs Premarin and Prempro, mares are impregnated and confined to tiny stalls in squalid conditions for the duration of their pregnancy so their urine can be collected, hence the name Premarin -- PREgnant MARe's urINe. The urine collection method is inhumane and involves a restrictive device that renders the mares virtually immobile throughout their pregnancy. Soon after giving birth, the mares are re-impregnated and the horrible cycle begins anew. The majority of their foals are sent to slaughter, where the meat is then sold for human consumption or dog food.
Despite the way in which the drugs are manufactured and the health risks they pose to women, Prempro and Premarin are still widely prescribed by health care practitioners. Premarin remains the number one prescribed hormone replacement therapy drug in the world.

Numerous research studies and clinical trials for HRT drugs Premarin and Prempro have shown very serious side effects, including dementia, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, lupus, heart attack, and breast and ovarian cancer.

- Estrogen-progestin pills, such as Prempro, are now being linked to an aggressive form of breast cancer. In a clinical trial, those women who took estrogen-progestin demonstrated a 66% greater risk of developing breast cancer and a 22% greater risk of dying from it within six years. Women who took estrogen alone (Premarin) had a 30% increased risk of developing breast cancer.1
- Researchers have determined that, over a decade, HRT would be responsible for 10,000 extra cases of breast cancer in England and an extra 100,000 cases in the United States among menopausal women ages 50-64.2
- Estrogen-progestin pills, such as Prempro, have now been linked to an increased heart attack risk of up to 81% in the first year of treatment.1
- HRT medications can double the risk of vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, especially in women over 65. 3
