Stop 500+ Sea Turtles from Being Killed in North Carolina September 06, 2005 12:25 PM
The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center has alerted us to a potential crisis for sea turtles in North Carolina. The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries has applied for the renewal of a permit for a gill net fishery in the Pamlico Sound. This permit requests a lethal take of more than 100 sea turtles each year for six years! This includes 25 Kemp's Ridleys, 50 Greens, 25 Loggerheads, 2 Hawksbills and 2 Leatherbacks. In addition the permit requests a non-lethal take of 320 sea turtles annually for 6 years. These turtles will be returned to the water with what is surely a significantly decreased chance of survival.
Please go to http://www.seaturtles.org/actionalertdetails.cfm?actionAlertID=96 to write NOAA Fisheries and ask them to reject this permit. While an emailed letter is good, a letter sent by fax or mail is even better. Please consider cutting and pasting the letter from the webpage and sending it to NOAA Fisheries.
Feel free to forward this action alert to family, friends and colleagues.
