Bagels and Lox and everything nice... July 24, 2005 4:01 PM

I remember having the best bagels or bialys with cream cheese and lox from the old Jewish Deli. The best!

I'm sure that can bring some good old time memories. What makes a good bagel? I remember a store that had only bagels and they were of every type. The guy would slice the lox paper thin and carefully sit it atop the bagel with a good amount of the cream cheese.

I like a garlic bagel with scallion cream cheese and the sweet Nove Lox, and a slice of sweet onion!

I bet Martin knows of good old Bens Deli, and there you get some good New York style deli goods!

Oh, Ben's Deli, Wade.  I know it well.  Excellent deli.

I, too, love lox and cream cheese on a bagel.  Usually I'll have a garlic bagel.  Or perhaps one of those everything bagels.

Do you like lox, eggs, and  onions omelettes?  I sure do.

Lox, eggs, and onion omlette! Oh yes Martin. I heard that the White House makes orders from Ben's Deli too, and gets it shipped over. I know a lot of the stores order from there.

Nothing like a good hot bagel right out of the oven with cream cheese... I think they used to call that a 'schmeer'.

Bagels and cream cheese and lox ...OH MY!!!! July 25, 2005 12:14 AM

Oh you guys are something.

I remember the bagel bakery's open all night and you could get hot bagels late at night...and take them home...and yes..it is called a schmeer!!

Oh they don't have bagel only places here that stay open all night...actually they have one nearby in Van Nuys....it is called Western Bagel Bakery...and it stays open all night like back east..

but it is too far to drive just for bagels at night.

We need one of those bakery's near me...Oh I can smell the bagels and the bialy's now!!!

I think I will buy some tomorrow...I can't stand it anymore...carbohydrates or not...i want a bagel...and a schmeer!!!

Love the story's ...the memories...oh my...

I have a friend for many years. one of our things we used to do , did I tell you?   Is go to the end of town in West Los Angeles, where the jewish deli's and bakeries are...and sniff our way down the street...in each bakery door...and then end up at the famous Canter's Restaurant and Bakery, had something yummy to eat..and get a few sweets to go......then on the way back to the car?  WE would buy some more stuff to take home from other bakery's.

We haven't done that since she had kids.

She and I have decided to do that again soon.

Oh yes Jandi... Halavah! I haven't eaten it in a while, but my Dad always bought a bar, and I can still remember how good it was. And they still have the My-t-fine pudding too Jandi, and it's right next to the 'jiffy pop' pop corn display Good food and good memories.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Oh heavens ....oh boy......my goodness.goodness had nothing to do with it July 25, 2005 6:15 PM

They still have My-T-Fine?   I didn't know..I never asked my cuz..

That was my first food memory....there is a whole story with the "chocolate pudding pot licker" story..

If you like I can tell it to you sometime.

My memory started at the age of 1 and a half!!

I don't have My-T-Fine out here....they have Jello or some other brands... of pudding.

I don't even cook the delich stuff anymore..cause if it ain't my-t-fine...it aint the same..ya know?

Can u believe it...I have actually met people out here that don't know what Halavah is...except the middle easterners....

Oh for some italian ices.....i had a vanilla yogurt at the ice cream parlor today....not the same...

I didn't get a chance to get bagels today..maybe tomorrow..it is tooooooooo hot to go out........and maybe tonite...but now whilst the sun is up!!!

It's days like this....whilst I am all grown up..that I miss (part of being a kid) in that my mom made nice lunches...and we had fruit for dessert...and italian ices down the block....and bagels was a basic. with the schmeer....

Well guys....it is about 9 20 give or take..pm there...has it cooled off yet?  do you have high humidity?  we are noticing something called a little of the monsoon.....They have monsoon's in Arizona desert...but not here..

uch....

Halvah is sold all over the place.  Sometimes I'll buy a bar when picking up a newpaper.

Once Baskin & Robbins experimented with a lox and cream cheese flavored ice cream.  Needless to say the public hated it.  I only wish I got there before they yanked it off the premises.  I can only imagine how horrible it must have tasted.

halavah and baskin robbins? July 25, 2005 10:29 PM

Martin, you mean to say...there once was a lox and cream cheese ice cream......ya know I might have liked it..

who knows...lol..

I can get halavah here...but it is so sweet I overeat it for a day then I have to lay off it....or sometimes if I eat a certain amount of it..it makes me crave it for days....and it is like a drug.....oh that part is awful...like a drug.

well,, nice to see you here.

I hope you stop by again...and would you mind please.....to make me an omelete..with lox and onions.......this is cyber space....It can be done..

Will you?   and then I want an egg cream....and then ....well do you mind....a bagel and cream cheese and lox on it....on the side....oh an everything bagel would be nice..onion...anything...I love it.

Thanks...let me know when you will be serving breakfast...so I can come and enjoy it...we should invite Wade...what do ya say?

And Maybe I can put on some coffee...any flavor preference?

I had an idea....what do you guys think of this...

Hi Jane July 26, 2005 7:06 PM

Welcome Jane.  You've hit the jackpot.  This is one very fine group you have joined.

An egg cream with a lox, and  onions omelette, Jandi?  I love them both.  Together, though?  Well, let me not be critical of something that's legal.

I've never cooked an l&o omelette.  It seems easy enough.  The lox is sort of sprinkled throughout the omelette.  Not because this is the best way to prepare it, but because lox is  sooo expensive.

My-T Fine pudding.  I'm sure I've had it.  It wasn't the brand we used growing up.  What brand did we use growing up?  I don't remember.  I just remember loving butterscotch the best.

So to recap: there is a Jandi and a Jane, who may be called Janey here.  Nice and Confusing, just like I like it.   Actually, The Law Firm of  Nice & Confusing defended me in court once.

Goodnight, J&J.   Wade, good night.  And to all, "Halva" good night.

Good morning my most famous friend Jandi, and I hope you feel better soon. What you need is an outing in the Hamptons again.. but this time we have to go out to the ocean sailing! We can tow my sail boat out, and go Cod fishing. I'll hold the fishing pole and Martin will steer the boat and anyone else that wants to join can come along too! You can sit on the deck with your sunhat on and guide us to where the Cod fish are.

Me and the boys built the boat and we named it 'The Cod Father'.

Talk later.

Hi Jandi, Wade, Martin, and All,

I have never been to NY but I am learning so much from you guys and it sounds like a wonderful place to be. I don't think Chicago can hold a candle to NY.

All this talk about the differnt foods is making me hungry though I don't know what they really are or taste like. But they all sound so wonderful. Maybe someday I will get to try em.

Back in the days, their were only regular bagel and bialeys... but now I see every type known I think.

Cinnamon raison? I never tried one of those though But I bet they're good too.

LOX... March 23, 2006 1:51 PM

You know... their is nothing like the paper thin sliced lox! The Nova Lox is sweet... and they sell it in certain Deli's vacuum packed in a New York style, and is very good, for about ten dollars... if you don't want to wait on a line for the fresh lox cut for you.

I have to get my Lox and Bagels at least once in a two week period. Must. They now pack sliced Lox up in vacum sealed wrapping, so almost no need for the original Jewish Delis when you need that Lox right away! I also get a bag of bagels from those stores that sell bulk items and I freeze the bagels till I want some.

Midnight comes... here comes a big bagel toasted with a slice of raw onion and a few slices of sweet Lox and naturally some creamed cheese if I have it. Oh baby!

OMGosh your killin me Wade!    I am trying not to eat Bagels at night...and you go and make my mouth water ....gees.....I get so hungry at night for something...and have been trying to eat sugarless tapioca pudding or some yogurt....and walking as much as I can...but if I were in New York now....you'd have to tie me up and keep me from the stores....I get on fire there for all that good stuff!....oh yeah!

Hugs, hungry for some lox and a schmear on a bagel..with some cucumber and a little bit of avacado and some tomato...   Oh I must shut up

night night
