The University of California, San Diego student organization: VEG (Vegetarian Environmentalist Group) is happy to present an online petition which aims to reduce the livestock industry via means of removal of governmental subsidies for livestock farmers as well as implementation of tax for livestock products for their detrimental external social burden on the environment. If you are still unfamiliar with the relationship between livestock production and the environment, I have listed the key facts below. Here is our petition link:
Please support us and help us spread the word! This is definitely an attempt at a baby toward in the right direction!
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: SUMMARY OF LIVESTOCK'S IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT
(SOURCE: 2006 UNITED NATIONS FAO REPORT, LIVESTOCK'S LONG SHADOW)
Our current livestock industry is responsible for emitting 37% of all human-induced Methane, 65% of all human-induced Nitrous Oxide, 9% of all human-induced Carbon Dioxide, and 64% of human-induced Ammonia. The Carbon Dioxide equivalent of livestock industry emissions is 18%, which is greater than all transportation combined (transportation CO2 equivalent is 12%). So, we need to decrease the livestock industry along with turning to alternative transportation systems (like biking!!). We cannot just pin global warming on one single source and go from there, all aspects need to adapt to the current climate crisis.
In addition to the greenhouse gas emissions, livestock current needs 36% of the world grain and 74% of the world soy to sustain its industry. If you think about it, this is not sustainable at all in the long run. It is definitely not an efficient usage of world crop supplies.
Now let’s talk water. Water is essential for survival. Did you know that California currently imports 100% of its clean water supply? Yes... and we are not increasing our world water supply. Yes, there are technologies being researched to desaltize the ocean waters, but think about the cost of that. It’s not a quick and easy solution. The best solution would be for everyone to be frugal. While major medias are telling us to conserve water during showers and toothbrushing, they are leaving out a major part of water usage.
According to the Stockholm International Water Institute, 20% of all world water supply goes to industries, 10% of all water goes to households, and 70% of all water goes to producing food. These statistics awaken a lot of people because if you think about how much water we use in industries and households (it’s A LOT), many folds more is going to agriculture. Now get this: within the agricultural business (which uses 70% of all our clean water), 1 POUND OF LETTUCE takes 23 gallons of water to produce, 1 POUND OF WHEAT takes 25 gallons of water, 1 POUND OF APPLES take 49 gallons of water, 1 POUND OF CHICKEN takes 815 gallons of water, 1 POUND OF PORK takes 1,630 gallons of water, and 1 POUND OF BEEF takes 5,214 gallons of water. (You can do some research online to see how to have defined these water usage values according to pounds) So now the question is, one plate of dinner will fill most of us up (some go for seconds, thirds, but anyways..). If you fill that one plate with meat, that’s 6000 gallons of water or more. If you fill that one plate up with rice and veggies (this can be tasty faux meat too!), it takes less than 100 gallons of water. Please, be frugal and responsible. Imagine a planet with no more water.
Here are just some additional costs of livestock production. Did you know that livestock farming land takes up 70% of all agricultural land, and 30% of world's ice-free terrestrial surface? Yup. And for the forest lovers (we should all love forests, they are the lungs of our planet), 70% of the Amazon rainforest is currently being occupied by pastures; feedcrops occupy a large sector of the remaining 30%.
Everyone talks about saving energy now with new bulbs, solar power, etc. Well why not talk about food, too. The livestock sector requires 16 times more fossil fuel energy than other sectors of agriculture. Moreover, livestock is increasingly being fed with grains and cereals that could have been consumed by humans, converting only up to 33% of its nutrients for our consumption.
Lastly (for my purposes), the U.S. livestock sector alone produces 900 million tons of manure annually. Immense lagoons used to store waste are known to heavily degrade the surrounding air and water, creating dead zones within our clean bodies of water. Besides harming our precious marine life, it’s nice to know that we are surrounded by 80% of water of this planet. So if our ocean dies, we probably don’t have much of a chance for survival either.
All in all, it’s good that we are more aware of global warming and finally (most people) recognize it as partially (if not mostly) human caused. Now, besides being frugal, using a reusable bag, riding a bike or taking the bus, changing lightbulbs, and saving shower time, please also change your diet. It really makes a huge impact, even though it seems like you’re just intaking a piece of meat, that piece of meat came from loads of environmental damage (as well as suffering!). Inaction is inexcusable. If you’re a non-vegetarian, go vegetarian. If you’re already a vegetarian, go vegan. If you’re already a vegan... go organic Of course, if you can go straight to organic vegan that is the best for the environment in terms of personal contribution. Be Veg, Be Green, Save the Planet. (doubtful? do research!)

Every single day, Wal-Mart stores across the nation throw tons of perfectly edible food into the dumpsters instead of donating it to local food pantries and/or soup kitchens. Petition Wal-Mart to change this wasteful practice!! In light of the current economy and rising food prices, more and more people will be going hungry and Wal-Mart, though they do help tremendously, could do so much more! I rang the Scottish executive three years ago and they denied any knowledge of such a hedgehog cull. This morning when I rang, they admitted- that this was the case, also claiming that they were advised that this is the kindess act (?). However if Amandas friends have succefully relocated any hedgehogs and have monitored this we can challenge the the poor advise given....
Sign and pass it on. It only takes a minute. The government's proposal to introduce road pricing will mean you having to purchase a tracking device for your car and paying a monthly bill to use it.
The tracking device will cost about £200 and in a recent study by the BBC, the lowest monthly bill was £28 for a rural florist and £194 for a delivery driver.
Please pass this on to anyone who owns a car/motorcycle. It affects them.
This time it's mine. Please sign and pass along.
Also, can anyone help me figure out what to do once a bunch of signatures have been collected. This is my first petition and could use some advice.
Border Fauna in danger of Extintion
The U.S. government has voted for the construction of a wall between Mexico and U.S creating an enormous wildlife barrier. The construction of this wall will: - prevent wildlife migrations between the two countries - destroy the habitat of endangered species - cause water pollution - destroy environmental resources along the border thus further hurting the recovery of endangered especies such as the Jaguar, Sonoran Pronghorn, and Mexican Gray Wolf. We appeal to the U.S. government to work closely with conservation organisations and make use of their technological and economic power to find alternatives to the border planned to be built between Mexico and the U.S which do not cause further damage to endangered species and their environment.
While we recognise that the US is entitled to let in whoever they please, border control should not extend to animals, especially endangered species who have used their routes long before humans started dividing the natural world with borders and fences.

Save the Bonobo Petition
The closest ancestor to the human race is a little known and highly endangered primate called the Bonobo.
These creatures have been called "cupids ape" because they tend to resolve all potentially conflicts by making "love not war". They are gentle creatures that live in the congo and are being pushed to the brink of extinction because of deforestation, hunting and civil war.
There are many who say the real reason for the turmoil in the Congo is because of multinational corporations determined to get their hands on
Congo's Gold, Silver and Uranium deposits; by rights the Congo should be one of the worlds richest countries but whilst so many of our corporations are paying "rebel forces" for access to resources things
are unlikely to change.
Let's all put pressure on our governments to fix this problem properly by getting our corporates to stop funding the destruction of the Bonobo, lets all sign this petition:

Love & Light,
As you will have heard, ID cards are set to become compulsory if New Labour win the next election. However, listening to the debates I don't think that the 'powers that be' really appreciate the strength of feeling against this unjust imposition on our freedom. As many of you know, the Thatcher Government also were unaware of the strength of feeling against the Poll Tax. This resulted in mass disobedience and the nasty events in Trafalgar Square. As a pacifist, I don't want to see another Trafalgar square. I don't want to see people locked up and fined for non-compliance to an unjust law. But I don't want to see my, or my children's freedoms eroded away. I want to send a message that tells the Government that if they try to impose ID cards they will meet a wall of non-violent resistance from the freeborn men and women of these islands. I want the politicians to see that the people of these free and independent islands will not roll over.
You can find the petition at,
Please only UK citizens and only sign it once. If we do have to stand up and be counted I want to stand with the 5000 who signed it, not the 500 with 10 email addresses.
There are those of you who might not be able to sign up for many reasons, family, job etc.

Please forward this to all that you think may be interested.
I also have an antio tesco petition in Reading, where they plan to build one on an old hospital, theyre knocking it down now and have demolished 70 protected trees.
few weeks ago I got the news that close to Shepton Mallet Tesco hat a plan to build a new shoping centre, because of that many trees will be chopped down. Many of them are old about 200 /300 years old. Tesco were promising to plant new trees. Many people are upset about it . Some Druids and other protestors went to the place to protect the trees. After few days when they were changing the people at a shift , police came and took them away. Fences were build up. The prostestors are back and in the trees. Please support these protestors and sign the petition. I hope we can save this trees.
Blessings to you all..
am passing this on having received and signed it myself :
- Cigarette butts are the number one form of litter and are consistently at the top of all beach and roadside cleanup litter tallies
- There are 176,000,000 pounds of butts littered in America annually
- Costs to clean up cigarette butts on a single college campus can exceed $30,000 annually
- Littered butts kill plant, animal, and marine life and deteriorate water quality
- Huge devastation, injuries, and death result from fires caused by dropped cigarette butts
- 90 percent of littered cigarette butts are dropped within 10 feet of an ashtray
- Raising awareness of littered cigarette butts DOES reduce the amount of littered butts because dropping butts is simply a habit that can be easily changed
The legislation we are seeking would just require cigarette manufacturers to include a warning notice on each package of cigarettes sold, informing smokers to “Please Dispose of Butts Properly.” There is nothing objectionable about the language, and many cigarette manufacturers have devoted a portion of their websites to environmental issues. In fact, both R.J. Reynolds and Philip Morris have worked in conjunction with Keep America Beautiful with respect to supporting environmentalism, which we applaud.
We are three kids who started the No Butts About It Campaign after doing many beach cleanups and becoming fed up with the number of littered cigarette butts. The campaign has spread to most states, and other nations are also concerned with the issue of cigarette butt litter. Let’s make America butt-free! Smokers who become aware of the detrimental effects of littered butts are usually eager to dispose of their butts properly. Really, it seems like it is just a habit that smokers engage in unconsciously. Once we raise awareness through a simple package label, the issue will be at the forefront of smokers’ minds and at their fingertips!
Please sign this petition and forward it to anyone and everyone that you know. Let’s make a difference now and end this terrible litter habit.
Cigarette Butt Litter Awareness Law
Hey, you know what? this isn't as off-topic as all that: aren't Heritage Sites all-too-often littered with disgusting and defacing smokers' debris, even when ashtrays and garbage cans for proper disposal have been provided???
