CHIT CHAT January 22, 2013

Time for a new start on the Chit Chat thread and here is the link to the old......http://www.care2.com/c2c/groups/disc.html?gpp=47&pst=1710650  Be ready Donna, I am sending very cold air to you......it is 4 degrees here with a light wind, Brrrrr it's cold.  And would you believe Punkin wants outside?  I won't let her and she is getting a little upset.  But that's better than freezing her little ears and nose off!  Sandi, my thumb has healed enough that I took the butterflies off and have it open to the air.  It is a little sore, but not bad.  I really do heal fast, thank goodness.  This is a short post, I am ready to fix breakfast.  Everyone keep warm and safe,

Checking in from Lafayette, Indiana....  It's 3 degrees here right now!  The windchill is making it feel like 8 below zero!!  Yesterday was a bitter cold one, too.  We had strong gusty winds and snow showers.

Hope everyone (including kitties!) is keeping nice and warm!!

WOW, We must be having a heatwave here at 26 degrees F.... It is suppose to go down to 13 tonight from the last I heard. It feels pretty good out there to me. The sun is out, and no wind, and snow on the ground.

I caught something from a shopping cart, and never got what I went into the store for either. I was looking for a half price sale on the sell by date on the chicken drumsticks.  It is the only way I can keep up with the  chicken eating bums around here..... The one in the kitchen knows the brands too.  He is NOT happy when it is not BJ's brand that is wrapped in packs of 4.

If I am at the sink, he gets excited, and will jump up and hang on to my clothes, and YET, he refuses to let me pet him......

ONLY a TRUE cat lover will go along with the program !!!!

It is now windy, and it feels like zero. You can keep your frigid weather Sugar, as I have my own now, AND, I still prefer it to the heat.

I'm with you on that Donna, I will take the cold over the heat. I know my ferals outside probably feel different though, one came last night to eat and I opened the door to let him in he seemed interested but he wouldn't do it. I felt so bad for him and his sister, it is so cold.

Hi Michela,

Did you make a shelter for the ones that will not come into the house?

Yes, I made two, one is in a pull along trailer that I covered with wood on top and at the front with an opening and filled with straw and the other is in my shed. I built an insulated wooden box and filled it with straw too. I'm not sure if they use them, I just hope someone else isn't like the racoons or the skunks. Last year I saw the ferals using the trailer and this is the first year with my shed so that shelter is new. I can see that someone has been in it but not sure who.

Good afternoon, all! Hope this finds y'all doing well and with things going great. Things are good here. Reading about everyone's cold temperatures makes me hesitate to tell y'all mine. We're at 71F on our porch right now. Not too much going on here, just my usual.

Sugar, thanks for starting us off with a new chat. I can't beleieve Punkin wantBetty, wows to go outside in that weather! I'd be staying in, that's for sure! I'm glad to hear that your thumb is healing nicely. It's great that you heal fast.

Betty, wow, -8 with the windchill! Not for me. I'm afraid I'd never make it as my blood is used to south Texas weather.

Donna, guess you're really used to the cold. Our temps here would probably do YOU in! lol So sorry you caught something from the grocery cart and didn't even get what you went there for. That's a real bummer.

Michela, your outdoor shelters sound like they do the job.

Take care everyone and have a fantastic day.

Darla,

Don't feel bad about your temp. Although it is ideal for most people, it would be too hot for me with my blood all thickened up for this cold weather.

However !!!! I was only outside putting peanutbutter and bread out for a short period of time, and my hands turned bright red and they were stinging.

Michela , it sounds like  the ferals are all set for some cold weather.  I can remember when my outside feral with the igloo and heating pad  had her warm spot taken. I was wondering why she was sitting outside the house there, and it was because an opposum was all comfy cozy in her igloo.....

The vultures  just chased the starlings off the tree to scarf up on their peanutbutter.

Donna I think you get the prize for warmest temperature! It's 17 degrees here and I don't even want to know the wind chill factor! I had to go to the funeral of the mother of a dear friend. It was an hour drive each way and once we got to the cemetary the weather was just brutal. I'm happy to be home and warm with my furbabies.

It is suppose to be 20  degrees now, but it is dropping to 12 degrees and I don't know the wind chill factor, but it has to be below zero. It is COLD out there.  My hands are actually cold, and they are usually hot.

well it was -8 today and now its -6 and droping fast.THe day was ok.but it was to busy for me.I fall a sleep at 10:30am and so I did not get started until 12pm after getting michelle up and waiting for her to get dress because she went to ride with to see if she could get any Wif wireless for her phone.which she did off and on where we were driveing thur.So I got to the bank and than to walmart and to look at a side by side thants for sale.If we can get a deal from the owner we are going to try to buy it,so that we can start to get move before summer gets here.this place we are liveing is no good for us or the kittie's to be liveing in.with the black mold that is in the kats bedroom and other place's in the house. So we went to put it up for sale for 9,000.00  and get moved.I have been a nomination for Best Poets of 2012 ,because, their belive me to be one of the most inertersting poets their have encountered and because  of my unique talentand that I am genuinely poetic with accomplishments.which made me so darn proud of myself after all that hard over the past 45 years. If only that Judge I had at my SSI judgement would see me today.being told me I was nuts and that it was all in my head that I was a Poet.I set out to be awesome writer and I did it.Thanks to God.Well I hope that you all were able to stay nice and warm today and have a wonderful day.God bless and love you all.

Hi everyone!!  My goodness it is cold today....it was -30C when I got up, which is -22F, and I honestly thought my car wasn't going to start.  It was protesting very loudly and it finally turned over just as I was thinking that I should stop trying to start it before I killed the battery   If these frigid temperatures hang around, I think I'd better start plugging it in at night.  I think it's supposed to warm up a bit in the next few days....I hope so!

Teri~~congratulations on being nominated for Best Poet of 2012!!  You are right to be proud of yourself....don't let some idiot judge make you feel any less deserving.  I hope you manage to sell your place soon and get yourself and your family moved before summer.  I hate moving in summer's heat....not that I like loading trucks in a blizzard either.  I just hate moving I guess

Anyway, I will be back later to see what's going on.  I have to go help one of my neighbours hang some curtains.  She makes the best pie crust that I have ever tasted so I will be hanging out drinking coffee and eating pie when I'm done.  With all these cold temperatures, it seems like I never get out to see what's going on around town.  Summer is so much better for staying in touch.  Try to stay warm...everyone that is in this deep freeze that is!!  All the rest of you, enjoy those warmer temperatures and think of me

Congratulations Teri on your poetic ability.  That's a great thing to have.  Keep  up the good work.  Good luck on selling your home and finding a better, healthier one.  From everything I have heard, that mold is really bad for you.

It's still cold here Donna.  I told you really cold weather and wind was coming your way.  We are supposed to get in the high 20s this afternoon before the snow flurries start.  For everyone's information, I get the bad (or good) weather first and then send it on to Donna.  I'm sorry you picked up something at the store you really didn't want or need.  I have finally began using the antiseptic napkins provided by the store to wipe down the carts.  Speaking of chicken, I have several thighs and legs in the crock pot with veggies to make chickien broth to use with dumplins and veggies for dinner.  I still have a very hard time eating chicken all because of coming home one day when I was a child and finding my pet rooster on the table.  We were poor, but that was no excuse for putting a child's pet on the table.

Good job Michela, making shelters for the ferals.  I do the same, but my feral, Black and White who has been feral around here for 4 years now comes into the basement for dinner and bed.  I'm glad.  It makes life more difficult for the rest of us but it makes him and me feel better.

Hi Karen and Darla.  You're welcome Darla.  Sometimes I kind of forget to start a new thread.  My thumb is still on the healing path.  I need to oil it up, it is getting stiff at the cut but I don't need a bandage anymore.  I am telling you those butterflies are wonderful for cuts.  I still haven't got to the Medicine Shoppe to check on those capsules to put Rosie's food in.  It isn't a convenient place to go to, but I will get there soon.  Rose got her med this morning.  She was unhappy about it, but each time I succeed I feel happy.

I am going to finish reading my book, keep warm all of you in cold, winter climates, of which I am one!!!

Good morning, all! Hope this finds y'all doing well and with things going great. Things are good here. It's 11:30 am as I begin this post and already 66F {18.9C according to the conversion site I use} on our porch. Not much going on here, just my usual reading and computer stuff. I did just feed my bearded dragon, BabyFace.

Donna, okay I won't feell bad about being so warm when so many others are so cold. AS you say, it's all in what you're used to and those of you who are used to snow and freezing temps probably couldn't handle the warm anymore than I could handle the cold. I'm sorry your hands did that. Did they warm back up okay once you went in the house? Poor starlings! Did they get any peanut butter before they got chased off the tree? I think it's quite funny that the vultures like it.

Karen, sorry about your friend's mother. Stay inside and stay warm.

Teri, wow, -6 and dropping that's just way too cold for me! Congratulations on being nominated as best poet of 2012! You have every right to be proud of yourself. Hope you get your place sold and get that side by side like you want.

Angie, you're temp is even worse than Teri's ~ -22F?!?!? Not for me. I'm sorry you had trouble getting your car started but glad you finally got it going. Have fun helping your neighbor and enjoy the pie and coffee afterwards.

Sugar, I know exactly how you feel about having a childhood pet put on the dinner table as it happened to me as a child too only it was my pet rabbit. We had plenty of rabbits to bucher and I knew better than to get too close to them but one year my stepfather {my mom's second husband, they are since divorced} decided to butcher my pet rabbit too. His name was Thumper and he was a fairly rare silver buck. Nothing my mom or I said would stop my stepfathe rfrom butchering him. I told him that I wasn't going to eat my rabbit and he said I wouldn't be able to tell the difference so I said I wouldn't eat any rabbit and I didn't and haven't since then. You do a good job at keeping up with when to start new threads. I'm glad Rosie got her medicine.

Take care everyone and have a fantastic day.

Sugar, there was no excuse for cooking your pet chicken. That is horrible.

Nope, my hands didn't thaw out too much as our heater went out.  It quit last night, and Jimmy got it started but it quit at 4 am. It is still out. Brrr  Now he went out for filters.....He is back now so I hope he can get it started.

I did have the oven going all night with the cats breakfast turkey baking. I made some rice to help it stretch.

My feral cat Bubba is staying in his warm igloo, and I pulled the cover down so the air didn't get in too much.

The starlings are coming for the bread and peanutbutter. The vultures can only eat so m uch, and I refilled the limbs. I cooked 4 lbs of spaghetties for the vultures, and they got the turkey neck and skins. I was glad there was only 20 of them out back eating. There are large houses out back that they can fit into, but I don't know if they went in last night.

The roosters get up in the tree sometimes, and other times they take a house. Time to go and get a coat on and some socks.

Ohhhh Donna! It's way too cold to be without heat! I'm so sorry.

I know you used to use kerosene heaters to help but even the stinky kerosene is an awful price now.

I bought a ceraic (electric) heater just after the first of this month. I have it in my finished basement as a supplement. Most of the time it is only on a few hours a day but now that it's so very cold I am running it full time. They are supposed to be very efficient and cost only about a dollar a day to operate. We'll see. At least it's warm.

Donna I am so sorry about your heat.  I keep my house very cool, but it is on purpose, to save much needed money around here.  It does feel good when the kitties and Chewy snuggle up and keep me warm. I tell you what Donna, that Chewy is better than a fireplace giving off heat.

Karen I was given an Eden Pure heater last year and it is wonderful.  It warms up a room quickly and is much cheaper than the regular heat.  That's how I can keep the thermostat down to about 60 to 62 but be comfortable in the family room.  No furkids have complained.

Darla I am so sorry about Thumper.  It's a terrible thing to lose a pet that way.  Like you I didn't eat chicken for years and even now I have a hard time swallowing chicken.  And this is 60+ years later.

We keep our heat on 62. The heater is working again. I guess it  might shut off in the middle of the night. The heater plans those things. The good part is that Jimmy doesn't go out to work anymore, so he doesn't have to  call his job in the morning while he spends the day with the heater.

My cats keep me warm too. Sugar has a very bad upper respiratory virus, and now it has passed on the Niecy. Sugar has always been a strong cat, and is around 7, which is not too old, but Niecy is OLD, and has never been a healthy cat. I don't know how old she is, but she has some seizures once in awhile. I trapped her and Speak Squeak out front a few years ago. I have both on antibiotics. Henry is sniffling now. I hope this doesn't go around the house.

Sugar, did you send this frigid weather  here????? It always hits there first.  I think it is suppose to go down to 10 tonight, but the wind chill is much colder. You cannot stay out there more than a few minutes, especially if your hands are damp.

Donna, so gald your heat is working again, that's great that Jimmy can fix it he sounds really handy. I hope all your kitties don't get sick, I'm sorry that some of them are already. I will pray that they all get better.

We don't keep our heat very high either as it's too expensive. When we are in the living room at night we have a gas fireplace that we use and it's warms up the room quickly and the kitties love it they all try to sit in front of it and heat suck. We have a screen in front so they can't get to close and burn themselves on the glass.

I understand about the damp hands Donna this morning when I was filling my bird bath I was cleaning it and my hands were wet and when I got back in my fingers were all red and they hurt. They warmed up quickly though when I saw all the birds were happy with fresh water and seed  .

Donna I don't really send the cold and wind to you, but it seems what ever type of weather I have within a day or so it finds its way to you.  I'm sorry.  It is still cold here but about 5 degrees warmer at night than before and closer to 10 degrees warmer in the daytime.  We are due snow beginning Thursday (today) night and all day Friday but only from one to two inches accumulation.  That's good.  I'm so glad Jimmy fixed your heat.  Sixty two is a good temperature.  My doctor says that too!  I am so sorry to hear  Sugar has a respiratory problem right now.  What are you doing for it?  I have a reason to ask, Kenny has a runny eye for the first time in his life, well since he came here in 2000.   And I heard him sneezing.  I have some amoxi pills and some Clindrops.  Which would be best?  He is due in for his check up in February and I want to wait until then to take him in.  January was a very expensive month because of Rosie and I don't want to spend any more this month at the vets.  She about broke the bank.  I will pray that the virus stops right where it is and that Tom here and all your furkids don't catch it.  I am still praying that Tom makes it to Spring time and gets to enjoy it for a while.

Black and White was gone for 2 of these cold nights and one whole day.  He is back, belly full and catching up on his sleep.  This morning for the first time in 4 years he allowed me to stroke from his head to his tail without going after me. He kind of responded at the caress.   He was eating at the time.  Maybe by another 4 years I can put him in a carrier and get him neutered.  But I don't think he can ever come into the house proper.  He sprays.  And that doesn't usually stop after it has been a habit for years.

Michela I understand that windchill on wet hands.  Sometimes I get carried away and run outside for a moment with damp hands.  I have been washing litter boxes outside on the deck and I think I will begin doing that in the utility room sink as of today until it gets warmer.  I get those horrible cracks in the skin around my nails some times and they are so painful for something so small and insignificant.  I have one healing right now.  As is the gash Punkin put on my thumb.  It is totally healed from the inside out now, just a red line and needing lots of hand lotion to keep it soft.

I have lots of work I want to get done today and I need to fix my breakfast in a few minutes, so until later,

Sugar

Hi Sugar,

Amoxi is the antibiotic to use. The other stuff is for teeth.

Henry is a neutered male, and he sprays, especially with me giving him some pills to keep his urine acidic, and they are salty, so he drinks more water. His urine is not the same as the tom cats..... It is much less stinky.....

I already know we are expecting the snow some time today or tonight. I am heading out the save alot store with a whole 7.00 to try to buy some cheap half priced chicken since this is the sell by date their, and it should be cut in half. The vultures didn't get their spaghetties this morning, but I made a 12 quart pot of rice with veggies and chicken broth. NOT what they prefer, but at least it is something warm in their belly.

Thanks for your prayers Michela. ... The odd thing is that the outside cats are always healthier in the winter. The summer is another story.......

Sugar, I don't have one of those cracks now, but they do hurt. They are a tiny slice next to my nail....

Gm picture for facebookIts 9 out today, still haven't any snow. Donna glad you got the heater working. Haven't been on much as its cold and just been reading and sleeping alot. I hate winter. Love to all.

Thanks Donna, I gave him the amoxi for 2 days now and have enough for 9 more days.  I thought that was the right one to give him.  I will be taking him in for a checkup hopefully weather permitting, the first week of February.  That should take care of him.  Donna how does this virus start?  Kenny stays in the house and no one else is having a noticable problem.  Could Black and White be a carrier?  Kenny did go down into the basement a week or more ago without me knowing it and could have eaten from B&W's bowl.  I try to keep everyone away from B&W.  You should be a vet tech.  Could a coon or possum have left germs?  They haven't been hanging around very much now that I quit putting food outside for strays.  Any passing stray has to wait until daylight now to eat.  I am sorry about that but I can't feed coons and possums.  It's too dangerous.

Sugar, it's really nice to be given an Eden Pure heater! I chose a Comfort Furnace. Same type of heater but they offered a larger unit than Eden Pure. This unit also has a UV light unit to kill germs and such.

Hello all

it's been crazy at week, I can only read, not talk!! First, my 2 cents, LOVE THE COLD. Fall is my favorite!!! I hate to sweat, hate the humity smacking my face even my dog won't walk more then a block in heat. Sad thing is my hubby (he is a 4x cancer person) is thin, from last big surgery-he 's always cold. I'm in perimenopause so ahhhh hot!
Anywho, Sugar I was making my monthy vet payment yesterday (I am still paying off my beloved Rosie from last March) and I added up vet stuff for the year. OMG. And that doesn't count food, toys, all the extras. Lets just say I really love my babies much more then that vacation I could have taken!!!

Good afternoon, all! Hope this finds y'all doing well and with things going great. Things are good here. Have been busy this morning with my Maine Coon rescue group I volunteer with. We got 3 apps in on the same cat so I assigned 2 of them to Adoption Counselors and I took the third so I've been on the phone since I came into the computer room and printed out the app I'm working on. Not much else going on here, just my usual. It's about 84F on my porch right now.

Donna, sorry to hear that your heater quit working in the middle of the night but glad Jimmy has it going again. Sure hope it continues to keep working. I'm also sorry that Sugar has an URI and has passed it on to Niecy. Hope they both get better soon. Will keep them in my prayers.

Karen, great to see you here.

Sugar, how nice to have been given a heater but even nicer to have your furbabies to snuggle up with. I don't blame you for not eating chicken all those years and barely being able to eat it now. It's been about 37 years or so for me and I still couldn't eat rabbit. Sorry to hear about Kenny though I'm glad that Donna knew what to give him. I'll keep your kitties in my prayers, especially Tom, so that they don't get sick too. So, Black and White was elsewhere for awhile, huh? Someone else might be taking care of him/feeding him as well.

Michela, great to see you here.

Sandi, great to see you here, love the picture you posted.

Take care everyone and have a fantastic day.

Helen, you must have posted while I was writing my post out b'cuz yours wasn't here when I started. You wouldn't like Texas much, at least not the part where I'm at. Going without so our furbabies have is something I think we all do. I'm sorry for your loss of your Rosie.

Hi Karen, Helen and Darla.  Karen I feel truly blessed to have been given the Eden Pure.  I would like the germ killing unit.  On well, be happy with what I've got.  Helen I know pets take a very large chunk of my income, but I try not to really complain because I love them.  But that is also why I can't adopt others.  Mouse is my last one for sure.  I will always try to keep food and shelter for passing strays though in need of temporary shelter.  I wish I could leave food out for them at night.  Speaking of strays, I think Black and White is out again.  This time of the year he is gone half the time.

Darla I cooked some chic legs and thighs and couldn't eat them at all.  I shredded them and froze some and kept some out to feed the kitties right now.  They don't mind at all.

Kenny's eye isn't tearing right now and I haven't heard him sneeze all afternoon.  He has only been on meds for 2 days but I did catch it early and hopefully that will keep it from getting worse than it could have been.

Donna,  how is Sugar and your other furkids?  I hope it clears up quickly before spreading.  Ut oh, I just heard Kenny sneeze!  I forgot to knock on wood when I said he didn't sneeze all afternoon.  It was a quick sneeze, no repeats, that's good.

Snow starts tomorrow.  Only one to two inches expected.  Donna it is supposed to warm up to the 40s next Mon, Tues, and Wednesday.  That sounds marvelous!  I will send it on to  you as soon as possible.  May God keep your heater running with Jimmy's help.  Together they can do it.  Bless you and everyone else here on the Cat Board!

First here is my message to Donna which I copied from wildlife thread.  I don't want her to miss it.

Donna I think you  have another day at least of really cold weather with possible snow and then a little warmer with some rain/sleet.  Be ready.  I'll keep you posted.  I am just like a weatherlady!  How's Sugar?  Kenny has had his amoxi already this morning.  His eye looks much, much better and he's sneezing less.  Here's hoping I don't have to take him to the vet until February.  Rosie also got her pills.  I tried to hide them in food this morning, but it didn't work today.  So we did it the hard way, but it's done.  Keep warm, and tell Jimmy to keep that heater going!

Durn, the snow started early!  There is a covering on the deck already.  and Teri, punkin is here,d i can't type.  i'll talk to you later,

I have to leave soon, so hopefully I will find time later to get back on.  Good morning to everyone for now.

Good morning everyone!  Oh my gosh...what a week of cold...brrrrrr.  My furnace wasn't working this morning so I've spent my morning trying to get it going.  I finally figured the line was frozen outside; I put insulation around the hose from the oil tank but that was a long time ago I guess.  When I looked, it was torn away in places...animals looking for nesting material?  So I got out my trusty hair dryer and defrosted the line and reinsulated it.  Now it is running fine and I am frozen.  Just made a pot of coffee to thaw out.  I heard we are expecting a snow storm today but no snow so far.  Helen my dear, you are welcome to my winter weather any day, give me some heat and sunshine please.  I can relate to perimenopause since I suffered with it for years.  Hang in there, it gets better, or is that worse?    Eventually, it does get better!!  I spent many years shovelling my driveway in short sleeves when I suffered from constant hot flashes.

I'll be back in a bit to do some reading.  I need to hang on to my cup of coffee and thaw out my fingers.  Typing is not working out too well.

Sugar,

I think the germs are in all of us, cats and humans, and the germs lay dormant until stress comes along. Sugar does not go out, and I no longer have any indoor outdoor kitties to bring anything in, AND, none of the outside kitties have any upper respiratory trouble. I don't doubt that Sugar gave it to Niecy, and Monique has a slight respiratory problem too, but the others are fine. Niecy is old and more suseptable than some of the younger healthier cats.

I don't think raccoons or Opossums pass anything except for rabies, and  I think distemper, I had a raccoon with distemper, and by the grace of God he or she did not pass it on to the cats. Maybe it was the canine kind.

I had a cold too, and it only lasted a few days, which is odd for me.-  I already heard that the weather is going to warm up some. whew, I like cold, but this is crazy!!!!! I turned Bubba's heated pad to medium, and he is happy to stay in there longer.

God bless you and your precious kitties !

we had some snow last night, less than a inch. Sugar, my dad order a eden pure hasn't got it yet. Angie glad you got the heat fixed, I was lucky when my furance went out it wasn't that cold yet, but unlucky as had to get a new one. Kept warm everyone.

Angie, I have always heard of a handiman, but never a handy lady.... That would be YOU.  I'll bet you know how to change a flat tire too....   I never learned how to change one, but when I got one I was blessed to have my sister with me. She changed it as I ran down the road with a yellow jacket on my tail. I was screaming!!!!!

Well, the heater is still on. We had water in the tank. Now we have trouble with the porch light that was sizzling. Water got into it. Jimmy said itwas the bad job the contractors did when they put the roof on.

Sugar, you can always delete your post out of the wild life thread after you copy and paste it into chit chat. The weather forecast you gave me sounded just like the one I heard on the weather channel early this morning. You are always on target too. They could learn something from you......

hello all...I don't know if you remember I recieved that wonderful heated outdoor kitty house for a gift...well I can't get my 2 ferals in it. I even put a bowl of food in it. I worry sick about the both of them every night (Mittens and Chester Sue). They show up to eat but will not seek shelter. I'm sure they have it someplace but I'm also sure its probably not heated. Any ideas. I love these guys.

Try putting it on a couple of cinder blocks to raise them off the ground. It could be that they don't feel safe where it is. Maybe put their food outside of it too, as whatever kind of monster is out there might be going into it, and leaving their scent. Also, be sure to wash the blanket just in case of another animal that laid on it.

What kind of heat is in there?

Helen, did you have shelter for them before you received this new one and did they use it? I agree with Donna try to raise it off the ground as they may feel more comfortable that way and yes keep the food outside because it may attract other animals and they wouldn't like that. I am sure they have somewhere else that is warm but I know how you feel and I am the same with my ferals. My shelters and food/water source are fairly far away from eachother as I didn't want skunks or raccoons finding the food in there and staying in the shelter.

Good afternoon, all! Hope this finds y'all doing well and with things going great. Things are good here. It's about 12:40 pm as I start this post and already 75F on our porch. Yesterday we got up to the low 80's. Did some more volunteer work this morning getting the application I was working on written up and posted so our group could vote. Nothing much else happening, just my usual. I was woken up this morning at 4:45 by a cat running over me and clawing my arm. Then Osiris wanted cheese so I went out to the kitchen to see my calendar all torn up; it had been torn off the wall so forcefully the little nail came out of the wall too! So, that means it was most likely Kona, our 18-20 pound cat who destroyed it. Of course, I figured that anyway as Kona is the one who loves to tear up paper and paper products. I just don't know what to do to try to make him stop destroying my things. My datebook is safe but I need a wall calendar too as that's how I keep up with my plant watering schedule. I fed BabyFace, my bearded dragon today and had to give Scamp his usual piece of greens; he loves greens.

Sugar, we also can't adopt others b'cuz of our income so I know where you're coming from as 5 is our limit. When I lose one I will probably get another but not before then. I'm sorry you couldn't eat th echicken but I totally understand. I am sure the cats were very grateful for the chicken! Osiris loves chicken too and gets quite a bit of mine when I eat my Marie Callender's chicken pot pie which has big chunks fo white meat chicken in it. I'm so glad that Kenny's eye isn't tearing up anymore and that he wasn't sneezing. Don't stop the amoxi for several days though.  Stay warm in the snow.

Teri, it sounds like your daughter's boyfriend is being passive-aggressive and trying to control her in some manner. Are they just dating or living together already? I'm glad Harry's appoinment went great and that you had another pain free day. It's good that things are getting back to normal with the cats. Sounds like you have alot to keep you busy. Hope the manager plows the driveway.

Angie, wow, you sure are a handy person to get your heater going again like that! I'm glad you were able to do so. Those of y'all who are having such cold temps sure don't need to be without heat. We haven't even turned our heater on so far this winter. I also suffered with heat flashes due to menopause except mine was surgically induced when I had my total hysterectomy 12.5 years ago at the age of 37. I've been on hormone therapy ever since but suffered hot flashes and even had my body temp change from being cold all the time to being too warm. Hope you thaw out from working out in the cold.

Donna, I agree with you in that each of us {feline, canine, human, etc} carry the germs around for them to come out in moments of stress, worry, or simply not having enough energy to keep the germs at bay. I'm glad you may be getting some warmer temps as you sure need it {Sugar too}. It's great that you were able to kick that cold so fast. Glad your heater is still on. Sorry to hear about your porch light.

Sandi, cute picture! I can't relate but there are several people here who can.

Helen, I agree with everything Donna said about your  heated house for your ferals. You might also try sprinkling some catnip on the freshly laundered blanket.

Take care everyone and have a fantastic day.

It's been my experience that cats don't much care about the skunks or possums, but if they are STRAYS, they might object to other stray cats. Now, I also notice that if the cats are FERAL cats, they generally get along with other cats too.

I don't think there are ANY cats that trust the smell of  another animal where they sleep.  I was worried when I changed Bubba's blanket recently, and it tured out that he was ok with it. I had a nice soft cozy one that I wanted in there.  His igloo is outside of my window. he is a feral cat, not a stray.....

Bubba has the vultures to contend with. They listen for me to put his food out there, and up to the porch they come to eat his food. I just shooed them off the porch. Bubba is in his house on the corner of the porch, and I have a cover over the igloo that covers the opening. I am so glad he is ok with the way I have it. I put his heated pad on medium, and he seems to like that better than low.

Many years ago I had a cat named Tom. He was an old cat that was small but had solid muscle. When Jimmy made a house for him next to the window, he put his name on it, and the door was a round hole.

He actually lived down the street, about 4 houses away. The woman that had him really loved him, but she died. The 85 yr old husband put him out after she died. She had a lot of orange cats, and inside of 2 weeks, the majority of them were GONE. My guess, it was that rotten husband.

I knew he was her cat by his upper respiratory sickness that he had, and all of her cats had it. he was in terrible shape. He was an older cat. I  told my neighbor I was going to take him to the vets. She said why don't I go to the house he lived in, and ask the old man if he wanted me to do it, and she said maybe he will pay for it.

I went there, and told him that I have his cat, and I have the time and carrier to take him to the vets. I said he was awfully sick. He told me that he would come and get him and take care of it himself. Jimmy said he was going to shoot him, and I was crying for days. I told t his man that his cat was no bother to me, and that he had a lot of good years left, like HE does. I asked what t he cats name was, and he said CAT. He said he was around 10 yrs old. I left, took Tom to the vets, got antibiotics, which took me a year to clear him up, and he stayed here.

Before I started babbling on, I was telling you all about  the house. I tried puttin him in there, and he would NOT go in there... He sat on the chair outside during the cold nghts since, being a cat, it had to be HIS idea to go in. One morning Jimmy woke me up to tell me that Tom was peeking out of his new house. I was thrilled. It HAD to be his idea though.

Tom was a rough character, but he never cared what kind of animal came up to the porch to eat his food. If it was a CAT, there was WAR. That is where he drew the line. We use to share a cheese steak sub on Friday nights in the barn shed when it was on the outside of the fencing...... If he was busy getting ready to fight a neighborhood cat, Jimmy would ask me to call him. Of course I said " How do you call your lover boy? I said Oh lover boy, and then I said Tommmmmm. He melted, and dropped the fight to come running to me. By the way. how do you call your lover buy was part of a song from years ago.

Cats are stubborn at times, and some cats don't feel safe if they cannot escape out the back of a house. Others want to be up higher than ground level. I have Bubba's igloo on blocks.... The cord to his heating pad goes out the front window.

If the cats eat next to the house, eventually they will check it out, if something else hasn't gotten to it yet.  My cat Roo had an opossum in her house one night. She had a heated pad in her igloo too. Himmy had to chase him out as poor Roo was sitting on the ground in her private yard.

I am really curious about that name Chester Sue...   Chester is a boys name, and Sue is a girls name.... Is he a boy named Sue?

Donna, nice story about Tom. I remember the song you're talking about as it's in the movie Dirty Dancing with Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze. That ladies husband was one rotten man to put out all those cats. I know that if I were to die before Ray he would keep any and all the cats we had. He'd even keep feeding outside cats.

Donna I really enjoyed reading about Tom.  Sounds independent like my Tom.  Bless all kitties, feral, stray or house kitties.  Donna it is still cold here.  It won't really warm up until Monday.  Then Thursday the cold begins here again.  last night it was about 15 degrees.  Everyone is safe and full and warm and sleepy.  Including me.

Teri, if your daughter's boyfriend isn't acting right, it might be a good idea if you gently put the idea in her head to dump him carefully.  If you try to 'boss' her she might keep him for spite.  Any more you just don't know what can happen.  Bless you and yours.

Hey Darla, did I hear you say it might reach 80 today?  Oh for 80 again!!!!  According to the forecast it might reach near 30 today.  Without a wind that wouldn't be too horrible.  I never noticed the wind forecast.  I won't take Chewy for walks when it is terrible cold.  Weather permitting I will make an appointment for Kenny's check up next week.  I will mention his infection and see if he needs more meds.  I have at least 5 more days of amoxi.  I hope they will give him any shots due.  They seem to be always changing things.  First rabies have been every 3 years for some time and now they will be every year and the other shots have been yearly and now they are going to be every 3 years.

My two shelters not on the deck are off the ground.  In warm weather Little Joe sleeps in the one under the evergreen shrubs.  But in winter he prefers the basement or house.  I have 3 great shelters on the deck with straw and one on one of the railing corners more like a lean-to. I also have another lean-to on the deck floor.  It is great to get out of the rain and to ambush squirrels as they use the roof as a  jumping off point.

Angie, I remember we used to wrap the oil line in wintertime also.  We didn't know anything about hair dryers way back then.  I wonder if they make an anti-freeze to keep it from freezing in this day and age?

Hey Helen and everyone, have a great weekend.  I may or maynot make it back on.  Sunday's are always a busy day for me.  And if I have any spare time I really enjoy doing nothing!!!  Take care and God Bless everyone.

Good afternoon, all! Hope this finds y'all doing well and with things going great. Things are good here. Not much going on here, just my usual reading and computer stuff. Ray did go to the grocery store early this morning. It's 12:15 pm here and already 63F on our porch. I figure we'll have another 80 degree day today. I have to water my plants later today and lcean BabyFace's habitat.

Sugar, we did make it up into the 80's yesterday as I'm sure we will again today. It's a bit warm even for us but I'm not complaining. I don't blame you for not taking Chewy on a walk when it's terribly cold. Sounds like you have things under control with Kenny. Sounds like you have several shelter for the cats to choose from. Do any other critters {like raccoons} ever use the shelters.

Take care everyone and have a fantastic day.

Teri, you're post must've come while I was writing mine b'cuz it wasn't here when I started. I understand about him taking her in. If it were me, I'd be concerned about him is all I'm saying. Passive-aggressiveness like that is a form of abuse and it can escalate. I know as I've been there. Like Sugar said, if you gently and carefully put the  idea in your daughter's head that she should break up with the guy then she'll think it's her idea. Surely, there's somewhere she could go, someplace that can help her get on her feet.

I'm sorry it's too cold and you don't want to go out. Hope it warms up for you.

Hi Sugar,

Back in the days when I hauled cats in for shots, their first rabies shot was always a one year shot, and the rest were 3 year shots. The distemper is important for kittens, especially if you have a litter of kittens to get shots for. After that, I don't think the grown cats actually need anymore of those distemper shots.

The vets were bringing cats in once a year, and  then they realized that the cats don't need all those shots so often, so  it became every 2 or 3 years. I personally would not get shots all the time for house cats that never go out. It is rough on their immune systems.

Good advie you gave to Teri for her daughter. One way to get rid of the bum is to tell your grandaughter that the poor guy isn't so bad. You have to treat him better. Watch the grand daughter fly up in the air with YOU don't know him.... He is awful.  If she says he is no good, then the grand daughter will say, :But I love him"   YIKES...... Human nature here.

I think the cold I had for a few days , that left and came back, was actually a sinus infection.  I felt awful earlier, and then decided to check my sugar since I was told infection can raise it. It was 349  FASTING. I hadn't eaten yet. So then I ate, and it came down to 180.  Now it is 141...more like it.

My name is Donna Dangerfield today. I can't get any respect. I went out a little while ago  to take chicken to the back of the property, and there was a party, and all were happy. Then I came back for water and rolls and peanutbutter, and went to the hedgerow to put the peanut butter up on the limb. I did the water, broke the bread, and felt something land on my shoulder........ Guess what it was........ You got it!!!!!    Vulture Poop..... White Poop !!!!  I guess I should be happy, as it could have been brown peanut butter poop......That would never blend in with my hair....... sheesh

Well,  that is about it for now. OH, Sugar, when I get a prescription for amoxi drops, I ask for refills JUST in case I need more. I use to ask for an unopened box to keep in the house just in case I need it. I actually use to order a few boxes back when this other lady use to work there.  I have found that the vets will also work with me... They know I like to  have a back up in case of an abcess or some other infection.

Yes,I agree witrh what Sugar 's adive on my daughter's new boyfirend.

Sandi c,, thank you for the cholate cake.

My day was good even tho I had to get dress a nd go do the wash.Got to the laundry mat at 3;15pm and was done by 4;56pm,stop at walmart and their were pack once again.had four huge loads and four huge dryer full to do.Do wish I had my own washer and dryer once again.for it be a lot easyer on both Harry and I and Michelle would be able to do her wash herself once again.I miss doing it all at home and washing just about every day.To kept up with it.I am how wondering if it would paid to have the tranmisson fix in it.instead of the way we decide to do.Harry's ankle does not seem to be healing as it should be doing with the brace on all the time.I may need a case on it instead of the brace.Because the bace loss up why he is walking and that cause pain to him.Its at  the point where Harry is useing his cane once again...I hope that your weekend has been old to you and you are enjoying it.God Bless

Aw Terri, life is sure not a bowl of cherries, is it.  I hope a small miracle comes your way and a washer and dryer appears magically in your home!  I will also pray for that.  I know the few times a year I go to the laundramat for large pet comforters, it is a pain.  And I usually forget something, like the soap and that's expensive to buy there.  But I'm always glad it's there when I need it, so I guess you pay for convenience, right?  I hope Harry's ankle heals soon.  He has been suffering with that long enough.  Take care and God Bless you and yours.

Hey there Sandi, I want a big piece of that chocolate cake.  I have some ice cream to go with it.  Thanks, and finish up the weekend with joy.

Darla, Kenny's eye, it was the left, hasn't watered for a day or so and I haven't seen any mucous in his left nostril either.  He has still sneezed a little yesterday but I haven't heard him yet this morning.  But it's early still.  I still have 6 days of meds left.  At least I am sure I can wait until February to make his appointment for his yearly check up.  And I think he will be well enough that any shots due will be given.  If my cats are the least bit sick my vet won't give them shots.  Rosie's were due this month, but have been put off indefinitely.  In another day or so it is supposed to be 60 degrees here!  But rain, rain, rain.  But that's better than snow and sleet.  Donna, did you read this, 60 degrees!  I hope it makes it to you really fast.

Donna, quick question, does upper respiratory infections usually infect only one side of the kitty or does he maybe have a cold.  What's the difference between a cold and an upper respiratory infection?  There is so much to know, when do you take them in or when can it wait a few days?  Donna, a young vet took over my old vet's business a few years ago and he goes strickly by the rules.  He won't let any meds be given for a cat that isn't brought into the office first.  And then just enough.  He would have let Black and White die a couple of years ago when he was sick.  He said I had to bring him in.  I found another vet which I am going to for some things now that understands about wild/feral strays and will give me medicine.  That's  where I got the amoxi I am using now.  It was for emergencies.  My vet is a female that works for the owner, but she would probably be fired if she broke the rules.  She is wonderful.  Mouse will continue going to the vet that understands.  That way I can get meds when I need them for B&W.  Donna, a quick story about my mother and a blue jay.  Candy was a scarce commodity in our family from day one til now with me.  Any way my mother had a chocolate candy bar and was in the edge of my grandmother's flower garden.  She was really enjoying it when a jay flew over and pooped on it.  Needless to say she cried.

A little update on Mouse, that cat is so smart and conniving.  After I swore I was not going to adopt another cat, he showed up and changed my mind somehow.  He was  just so loving and learned to get into the basement through the new pet door before anyone else.  And I knew I had just lost Pudge and I knew I would lose Tom  just any time so I said okay.  I knew last night he was in the basement and I keep the basement door closed to keep B&W out of the house cause he will spray in here.  But when I got up this morning Mouse was in the house, ready for breakfast.  I checked the basement door and it was in the normal closed position.  I thought, oh surely the back door didn't get opened, and no, it was closed and locked.  How did that cat get in here?  He had to have opened the door and it closed behind him, which it does.  He is the smartest cat!!!  I wish he was older though.  He will be one I have to worry about as the years go by.  He is probably two this year.  Little Joe is next youngest at 6 this spring.  But at least for now Mouse is living the life of Riley.

Good morning, all! Hope this finds y'all doing well and with things going great. Things are good here. This morning I was trying to see the computer and I had 2 cats on the desk. It was Scamp and Kona and they were both trying to get to BabyFace whose habitat is on top of a dresser right next to the computer desk. They were doing this b'cuz BabyFace chose this morning to be active and is running all over his habitat making noise. Scamp was in the spot closest to the BabyFace and Kona had to settle for being right in front of the computer. That left me with a 18-20 pound cat blocking my screen! Talk about frustrating. Other than that not much else going on, just my usual.

Donna, my goodness, are you alright?!?!? That sure was a high fasting blood sugar!!!! I'm so glad it came down after you ate and is staying stable. YOu're so right in that a mom saying bad things about a guy will just make the daughter want to defend him. I married my first husband strictly b'cuz my mom told me I shouldn't even going so far as to saying I couldn't and that they wouldn't pay for thewedding. I was 19 when we were dating and 20 when we married. Deep down I knew my mom was right but I wanted to prove her wrong. I ended up in almost 8 year of he** b'cuz of my stubborn ways. I was ready to divorce him once and take custody of our son but I wound up pregnant despite being on the pill and in Texas you can't get a divorce while you're pregnant so I stayed for another 1.5 years thinking it might get better. He was abusive in all ways {physically, emotioanlly, psychologically} and used to pull those passive-aggressive tricks which is why I warn Teri's daughter to be careful. Oh no, Donna, vulture poop!?!?! I have to say I think that would be a terrible way to start a day. Donna Dangerfield indeed!

Sandi, great to see you here. Thanks so much for th echocolate cake. And Sugar says she has ice cream ~ maybe she'll share!

Teri, glad you had a great day though I'm sorry you had to get out and go do wash. Hope a washer/dryer are in your near future. You should check out Craig's List for a nice used set. You can find good deals there. We got our washer/dryer for $75 from a neighbor who was moving out. They sure were sweet to give us such a great deal as the washer/dryer were almost new. Sorry that Harry's ankle is still bothering him and that the brace doesn't seem to be doing its job. Have y'all told the doctor about this?

Sugar, if it was just Kenny's left eye and nostril it sounds like a sinus infection to me. Sinus infections can cause the eyes to water and can affect only one side. Sounds like the Amoxi is doing its thing and getting Kenny better. I hope he can get his shots in February. Yes, I'm sure Rosie's shots would be put off while she is so sick. It's 11:40 here and already 70F! I hope you get that 60 weather real soon. Mouse sure does sound like one smart cat! Imagine opening a door. I wouldn't worry about him too much, I'm sur ehe'll be fine. Meanwhile you can talk to friends and family to see who would be willing to take him {or know someone who would} if he outlives you and you can leave a will stating that. If any of my cats outlive both Ray and me I know my kids will do the right thing and either take the cats themselves or find appropriate homes for them. Though I'd love to make a will stating that myself. Now just to find a way to make a will without paying an attorney.

Take care everyone and have a fantastic day.

Hi Darla.  I will gladly share my ice cream to go with the cake.  I'm sorry about your first marriage, but as I've said before, bad things happen to good people.  My first marriage was for 15 years and at the end of it, it was amazing the things I found out.  I could write a book about it.  I was always working.  I had a full time job 30 miles away and I had the house, the pigs and the cattle to care for.  I was a fool, but I will never be sorry for the work I did, just that I put my faith in my husband.  The work I enjoyed.

I dropped in to mention that this morning Little Joe gave me the ol' evil eye!  He was watching a great blue heron unbeknownst to me.  He had visions of grandeur I am sure.  When I opened the door the heron took off up the creek with wings flapping.  He just skimmed over the icy creek.  There is open, running water still and he was looking for food.  The quieter, deeper pools are frozen over.

I'm doing well, keeping warm and comfortable even though it is still cold outside.  Actually it is 35 degrees outside right now which is warmer than it has been for probably a week or more.  I think Black and White just went out on a layover somewhere.  He stopped up on the deck and got a special treat and now he seems to be gone.

My computer cat is Punkin.  When she comes I might as well hang it up.  She just won't stop trying to walk or lay down on the keyboard and she wants me to stroke her cheeks and under her chin.  So I close up my post fast.

I think I am glad it might have been a sinus infection that messed up Kenny.  I can believe that because my nose and head gets a little stuffed up at night and I sneeze and clear my head in the AM and I'm okay.  His eye and nostril is looking totally normal and I haven't heard him sneeze at all.  He gets shots for everything recommended for cats so I couldn't understand why he would get an  upper respiratory infection, but things happen.  I am going to continue the meds for at least another day or two.  Don't you think I should, if not speak up, please.  I want him healthy when I make his appointment.  He hasn't been outside to catch anything and Mouse seems okay.  He goes in and out like Little Joe.

Donna, how is your blood sugar now?  I hope it is back in a safe range.  That was very high.  My sister had diabetes and I don't think it ever went that high after she was diagnosed and put on pills.  Before that, who knows?  Are the vultures treating you any better?  Not pooping on you any more?  I bet that was a dose and a half, not like a little Blue Jay.

Well, Mouse is asleep on a nice soft kitty pillow.  He looks so comfortable.  Chewy just went outside to pottie and Tom is asleep here beside me.  Kenny is in his bed and Punkin is asleep in the basement and who knows where Little Joe is.  I am guessing in his little bed in the basement.  He had his dinner already and has a bowl of food nearby.  Rosie just went down to the basement.  I don't know what she plans on doing.  She doesn't go there very often.  Maybe she is going to the pottie.  That's everybody.  Now I guess I can have my dinner.  It is just egg salad with a tomato and the last piece of my peach pie, with ice cream of course.

I  hope everyone had a great weekend,
