Hi all!!

The University of California, San Diego student organization: VEG (Vegetarian Environmentalist Group) is happy to present an online petition which aims to reduce the livestock industry via means of removal of governmental subsidies for livestock farmers as well as implementation of tax for livestock products for their detrimental external social burden on the environment.  Here is our petition link:

Help soldiers save their pets in Iraq & Afghanistan October 27, 2008 10:09 PM

Please share!!

As many of you know, Sgt. Beberg's dog "Ratchet" is now home from Iraq and in Minnesota safe and sound.  More than 69,000 people signed the petition asking for clemency for the soldier's dogs, with orders of "shoot to kill" and certain death awaiting Ratchet.  The AP sent the story to every news agency around the world and it became headline news everywhere.  With the eyes of the world watching, the Army finally released  the soldier's dog and after a third attempt to transport Ratchet out of iraq, Operation Baghdad Pups finally rescued the dog.

But, our efforts do not end with Ratchet. Many more soldiers are anxiously waiting for their pets to be granted safe passage home to the U.S. Operation Baghdad Pups receives 4-5 requests a week from soldiers in Iraq & Afghanistan, asking for safe passage home for their pets.

Our letter and petition to the Department of Defense to appeal their policy against animals and soldiers is now online.  Orders - shoot to kill.

Please take a moment to read the petition and sign it. A letter writing campaign to the DOD is our objective. The Army heard our voices about Ratchet and released him. Now, we must make sure the DOD hears our voices and listens. The policy must be changed. We know far too much about PTSD to ignore this problem.

 Please go to:

Please share this with friends, family and your online communities.

Whales Go to the Supreme Court October 07, 2008 5:49 PM

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear a critical case on Oct. 8. NRDC will fight to defend thousands of whales and other marine life from sonar exercises that disrupt their ability to navigate, find food and communicate.

Tell the Navy to stop harming whales with high-intensity sonar

Melon-headed whale Although the Navy agreed to limit its use of low-frequency sonar, it continues to blast the world's oceans with mid-frequency sonar, which can be just as harmful to whales and other marine mammals. Tell the Navy to turn off the noise.

Help End the Use of Live Pigs! October 04, 2008 8:24 AM

Help End the Use of Live Pigs for Trauma Training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey

We need your help to end the cruel and unnecessary use of live pigs in trauma training courses at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark (UMDNJ). Across the United States, more than 90 percent of Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATL courses are taught using only human-based simulators. But a handful of institutions like UMDNJ continue to use live animals. The American College of Surgeons, the ATLS oversight body, has approved nonanimal models like the TraumaMan System, SimMan, and cadavers for these courses. Read a related opinion piece by John J. Pippin, M.D., F.A.C.C., PCRM medical education and senior medical adviser, originally published in The Star-Ledger.

TraumaManPlease call, e-mail, fax, or write a letter to UMDNJ president William F. Owen Jr., M.D., and politely ask him to end animal use in the institution’s ATLS courses. Being polite is the most effective way to help these animals. Send an automatic e-mail>

On July 2, 2008, PCRM filed an official complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, citing the unlawful use of live animals by UMDNJ. The complaint cited an ongoing 2007-2008 survey by PCRM, which has so far received responses from 164 U.S. facilities offering ATLS courses. The survey found that 150 of those facilities (more than 90 percent) exclusively use nonanimal models for instruction. In addition, the vast majority of those 150 facilities exclusively use the TraumaMan System, including Cooper University Hospital in Camden and AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City. Cooper University Hospital is operated by UMDNJ.

Learn more about the TraumaMan System and SimMan. If you have any questions, please contact Ryan Merkley at rmerkley@pcrm.org or 202-686-2210, ext. 336.

Ask Bucknell University to End Cruel Experiments on Hamsters! September 26, 2008 10:29 PM

http://getactive.peta.org/campaign/bucknell_testing?rk=o7rUgoYqtZbAE

After being contacted by a concerned Bucknell University alumnus, PETA has learned that for 30 years, Prof. Owen Floody has been cutting holes into the skulls of female hamsters, damaging their brains, and observing the injuries' effects on the hamsters' sexual behavior. The animals are killed at the end of the experiments, and their brains are dissected. Floody even has his undergraduate students help torment animals in these experiments in his physiological psychology course.

PETA has already expressed its concerns to Bucknell and is now calling on you to help end these experiments. Please contact Bucknell University Dean of Arts & Sciences, Christopher Zappe. Politely ask him to end the experiments on hamsters and implement humane, non-animal teaching methods, which are readily available and used in physiological psychology courses at other universities.

With your help, we can shut down cruel puppy mills in Canada.

1. Sign the Stop Puppy Mills pledge

2. Please ask your friends to help, too

The stench inside the puppy mill was overpowering. Flies covered every surface of the warehouse, which was filled with cages of dogs and puppies. The sound of barking was deafening. As our investigator approached a cage he saw a terrified white dog, cowering in fear and trembling. Her body was covered in open sores, and her barren concrete cage filthy. She was just one of hundreds of dogs cruelly confined in this horrible facility, forced to produce litter after litter of puppies until their bodies simply give out.

Dear Jacinthe,

This story is just one of thousands that could be told about puppy mill dogs in Canada. The situation is urgent: the way these dogs are treated is horrible, and something all Canadians should work to put an end to.

I write with grave concern regarding Lolita, who has been on display for more than three decades. For longer than many of your visitors have been alive, Lolita has remained imprisoned in a tiny tank, forced to perform tricks for the sole benefit of her wardens.

This sort of confinement is unconscionable and thoroughly indefensible. Lolita, like all other killer whales – and humans – is highly intelligent, social, and capable of perceiving the loneliness and misery of a life trapped in a space analogous to a human's closet.

I respectfully submit that Lolita has served her time. Please allow her to retire immediately, so she may enjoy her few remaining years in peace. I, along with millions of others, eagerly anticipate Lolita's release. Thank you.

Procter & Gamble Online Form

As one of the most cosmopolitan syndicates on the planet, I respectfully submit that Procter & Gamble has a special obligation to set an ethical precedent. I have sincere reservations regarding P&G's claim that the company only experiments on animals "as a last resort" or "when required by law." Numerous accounts, including recent reports of pregnant rats being force-fed butylparaben (a product ingredient that's been in use for decades), indicate that P&G is not as devoted to animal alternatives as it would have consumers believe.

I acknowledge and appreciate the strides P&G has made thus far. However, I must remain committed to a comprehensive boycott of P&G products until all forms of vivisection are permanently discontinued.

Please make P&G a world leader in sensible, ethical practices by immediately instituting non-animal alternatives company-wide. Thank you.

The whales need you more than ever…
please act now to keep whales protected

Dear Jacinthe,

We’ve learned about a secret meeting that could mean the end of years of whale protection.

From September 15-19, a group of member countries from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) will meet in St Petersburg, Florida to consider lifting the ban on commercial whaling.

WE CAN NOT STAND BY AND LET THIS HAPPEN.

The IWC is threatening decades of whale protection by holding this secret meeting.

Please take these 2 simple actions now to stop this from happening:

I don’t need to tell you how high the stakes are for whales – you know the pain a whale endures as it is hunted… pursued to the point of exhaustion…shot by an exploding harpoon…and finally killed and dragged onto the deck of a whaling ship. You know that whale populations are just now starting to show signs of recovery, and this meeting could undermine all that has been accomplished for whales.

Yes, you know -- and you have spoken up before for those who can’t speak for themselves. So I know I can count on you to stand up for animals again by speaking out against this new threat to whales.

The IWC has their secret meeting…but the whales have a secret weapon of their own: YOU.

Please help IFAW ensure whale protection remains a public issue!

Thank you,

Fred O'Regan
President and CEO

The moratorium on offshore drilling expires on Sept. 30. Will you call Congress.

Hi Jacinthe,

New England's waters once contained a bounty of seafood, whales, dolphins and other wildlife.

George's Bank, Stellwagen Bank, Gulf of Maine . . . These places used to host some of the most productive marine ecosystems on our planet. But not anymore.

Many of New England's most important fisheries now hold only 10 to 20 percent of the fish they once held. Like the canary in the mine shaft, New England's fisheries should serve as a warning to our government about the dangers of overfishing.

Don't let the Bush administration ignore this warning. We have until Sept. 18 to make our voice heard. Send your comment today:

http://www.environmentamerica.org/action/oceans/comment?id4=ES

We have a chance to avoid the same collapse of our fisheries, and even a chance to bring back a vibrant ocean ecosystem to New England.

We can reverse decades of damage. All it will take is tough rules and tough enforcement to stop overfishing. The Bush administration's National Marine Fisheries Service must have all our comments in by Sept. 18.

Over the next month, the administration will finalize its fishery rules. Not surprisingly, big industrial fishing interests will oppose good rules. We've got to counteract them with thousands of voices.

http://www.environmentamerica.org/action/oceans/comment?id4=ES

With your help, we'll begin to restore our oceans' health.

Thanks for making it all possible,

September 15th International Whaling Commission(IWC) to overturn the ban on Whaling that has stood since 1982

Honorable Ladies and Gentlemen:

On September 15th there will be a closed door meeting of the International Whaling Commission(IWC) to overturn the ban on Whaling that has stood since 1982. William T. Hogarth, the Dean of the College of Marine Science, University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, Florida must hear our voices. We cannot allow this group to meet behind closed doors. This would mean that there would be NO government authority to control thier decisions, which would give the government all rights to turn thier heads and allow whaling to begin LEGALLY all over again.

With you're help we can allow public attendance to this meeting. Whales are endangered and belong to the world, not special interest groups! Then the media can get involved and everyone could see our government looking the other way while we allow stuffed shirts to sign the whales' death warrants.
Please take this time to contact them and demand an open meeting!
We need your help to save the whales from extinction! Very few of them remain. Please help us protect them!

Dear Dusty,

Izembek Refuge Wilderness Threatened Again.

Click here to take quick action.

One of the world's most critically-important resting places for migrating birds is found in the cold-water lagoons and internationally significant wetlands of Izembek National Wildlife Refuge on the Alaskan Peninsula. Virtually all of the world's Pacific black brant stop at Izembek to feed and rest. The refuge also is home to tundra swans, ptarmigan, bald eagles, and hundreds of thousands of geese, as well as threatened species, such as Steller's eiders. Plenty of mammals use the refuge too - including caribou, brown bears, wolves and wolverines.

We need your help to keep this globally significant wildlife refuge intact from a pet project - a road through Izembek's protected Wilderness being pushed by Alaska's congressional delegation: Senators Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski, and Rep. Don Young. Click here to say no to the pet project and yes to protecting Refuge Wildlife and Wilderness.

Your Senator sits on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee that will hold a mark-up of this bill this week. Won't you take a moment to urge your Senator to oppose this legislation?

Thanks for all you do for the wildlife and the wilderness!

Sincerely,

Kathy Kilmer

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge with rainbowThe Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to arctic foxes and caribou. It's the most important onshore denning habitat for America's vanishing polar bears. And, each year, millions of birds from all across the country make their way to this special place.

Yet, for all its unique beauty, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge remains under assault. Year after year, Big Oil's high-priced lobbyists push legislation to industrialize this national treasure. Isn't it time that this special place got the lasting protection it deserves?

The oil industry and its allies have launched a new attack on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the danger is greater than ever.

Oppose drilling in the Refuge and support legislation that would protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge — and the special creatures that live there — from Big Oil's harmful drilling plans.

In fact, according to our new report, most scuba divers are willing to pay additional money to dive with sharks and other marine life. Sea the Value: Quantifying the Value of Marine Life to Divers shows that shark conservation has economic value and that divers have a stake in conservation efforts. Fortunately, the Shark Conservation Act of 2008, a bill which would strengthen protections for sharks, recently passed the U.S. House, and is now awaiting action in the Senate. TAKE ACTION, HELP SAVE SCOTTISH SEAS

We need your support to convince the Scottish Government to deliver effective protection for our seas and wildlife through the new Scottish Marine Bill.

This is your opportunity to make your voice heard and ask for a Bill that provides the essential protection that Scotland’s seas need.

Scotland has the longest and most diverse coastline in the UK. Our seas are home to half of Scotland’s wildlife. Yet less than 1% of Scotland’s seas are even recognised as important for marine species and habitats. Without better protection, we risk losing some of our most important marine wildlife forever.

Please take action by emailing Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond today!

Speak Up for Florida's Wild Animals

Dear Debbie,

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is considering several changes to the state’s wildlife regulations that would affect freshwater turtles and captive wildlife. While these changes would be a step in the right direction, they are still not strong enough. Please urge the Commission to consider stronger changes to the rules.

Currently, the FWC is considering protections for Florida’s freshwater turtles by limiting the harvest to five per day. However, anything less than a complete moratorium on the commercial harvest could result in serious damage to some species. The Commission is also proposing beneficial changes to the current rules on keeping wild animals in captivity. But, the Commission needs to enact additional protections to ensure that these animals are kept in the wild, not in basements and backyards!

TAKE ACTION
The FWC will discuss these issues on September 17. Please take a moment now to send an email to the FWC to urge the strongest changes possible to these wildlife regulations. And don’t forget to tell your friends and family in Florida about how they can take action, too.

Thank you for all you do for animals!

Super-sized for animal cruelty?Urge McDonald's to say NO to animal clones! As part of McDonald's recently launched 'See what we're made of' campaign, consumers are invited to learn about the ingredients that make up the restaurant chain's food. But will McDonald's super-size its menu to include animal clones? Now more than ever, animal advocates need to speak out and tell McDonald's that animal clones should not be part of its menu.

The government has recently reported that milk and meat from the offspring of cloned animals may have already entered the U.S. food supply, but a large body of evidence has shown that cloning causes tremendous animal suffering, and there is overwhelming opposition to animal cloning from the public, animal and environmental groups, and the dairy industry. AAVS has dedicated much time and energy to keep animals from being cloned for food, but we need your help!

AAVS is urging the public to contact McDonald's to ask the company to make a public pledge to never include cloned animals or their offspring on its menu. As a global food company that influences standards for the entire industry, it is important for McDonald's to take a stand against animal cloning. Please urge McDonald's to say NO to animal clones!

Urge Retailers to go Fur Free!
Sign the International Petition Today

Fur Free fox logoFur used in fashion is innately cruel. The unfortunate animals involved in fur fashion are either factory “farmed” or trapped and then killed, only to end up as a bit of trim or other so-called fashion item.

We need you to do your part and work with us at Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute to put an end to this senseless and brutal practice.

Retailers have many choices when it comes to what makes up their inventory. Unfortunately, not all retailers have acknowledged that they directly contribute to a cruel and unnecessary industry when they sell fur.

If they are ever to do the right thing and stock only fur-free items, retailers must be made aware that no fur garments are made compassionately.

Thousands of wild animals are suffering in the circus - Stop it
Dear Jacinthe,

Tiny caged wagons, permanent transports, questionable methods of training and absurd “stunts” in the arena - thousands of elephants, tigers and other wild animals are suffering in European circuses. VIER PFOTEN starts an international campaign against this animal cruelty: Stop it! – No wild animals in the circus.

Please visit www.vier-pfoten.org/stopit and join the campaign:

  • View the films - this is how animals live in the circus!

  • Act now and send a RED CARD.

  • Document the suffering if there is a circus with wild animals in your neighborhood.

  • Show your face: send your foto for our picture galery.

Most of the 1.000 circus companies in Europe perform with wild animals; with devastating consequences for the animals, as they live under miserable conditions: Lions and tigers vegetate in small caged wagons or on tiny runs, highly social animals like elephants are kept alone and stand around chained up for hours on end. The results are strong behavioural disturbances: stereotypical behaviour, aggression or apathy.

Support a ban! Join our campaign and send a RED CARD. Wild animals are no clowns - Stop it!

HELP FOR STRAYS AND PETS--PETITION TO EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT July 19, 2008 11:57 AM

this was sent to me by a new friend, Suzanna, this needs 1,000,000 signs before it can even be presented to the European Parliament.  This would lay down some standards for the protection of pets and strays in the countries governed by the European Parliament.  A lot of signs needed so please help me with this--I believe it is an important step in the protection of our animal friends. Thank you so much.

European Convention for protection of pets and stray Petition to european parliament

Or
http://www.petitiononline.com/01marina/petition-sign.html

we need one million of signatures !

A member of the European Parliament, Mr. Alain Hutchinson, is committed to cooperate with animal welfare and to get a "European Convention Protecting Pets and Stray Animals" passed as soon as possible.
He needs 1 million signatures in order to present the project to the Parliament. That means we need to get hard at work and collect those signatures.

Signing alone is good but not enough! Please forward this message and cross post in other groups so we can truly make a difference. We are trying to reach the goal of 10.000 signatures!

Still daily thousands of animals in an atrocious manner are killed for their fur-lined coat, and with the couple thousand signatures which we have now, there but little difference can be made! For this reason i ask  you kindly, but with insistence to help me in the fight against these practices and sign/ forward/ cross post this message.

You can do even more by

1) putting this message in your own group or crossposting in other Care2 or myspace groups.

save dogs from the philippine DOG MEAT trade January 27, 2007 6:07 PM

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/879609320 Because this exceedingly brutal commercial industry provides a steady flow of income not only to the traders but to individuals in government positions acting in their own interests, the dog meat trade remains unscathed from the Animal Welfare Act. However, House Bill 2991 is currently pending in the Committee on Revision of Laws that provides a stiffer penalty to dog meat traders. Introduced by Representative Francis Escudero, the creation of the bill was based on the need to upgrade an Act that, as noble as the objectives of the law are, the traders remain elusive because the penalty is unrealistic. The penalty must be upgraded. OUR GOAL is to obtain OVER 50,000 signatures by JUNE 30, 2007. It is obvious that the only way we can ensure that dogs in the Philippines are protected is to place the Philippines government under the international spotlight.  [ send green star]

All you hear is a door slammed closed and the sound of screams and choking as the gas is turned on. They see one another dying, going into convulsions and bleeding out of the mouth. Many are not quite dead and are thrown back in the incinerator. We are not talking about the Holocaust, we are talking about something that happens in your community every day.

Thousands of dogs are put down every year in North Carolina. Many shelters have not updated their method of euthanasia and are still using the gas chamber. In many peoples eyes this is not humane. The only humane way to put a dog to sleep is by lethal injection through a vein in the leg. This method takes less than 30 seconds and is pain free for the most part.

Please help, by signing this petition, North Carolina put a law into affect to make lethal injection into the leg the only way to euthanize an animal.

In advertisements for Marshall Pet Products, the company claims it "…cares as deeply about your ferret’s health and well-being as you do," but the ads the Marshall family doesn’t want the caring public to see are run in Lab Animal magazine. These ads prove that the ferrets and beagles they breed are nothing more than commodities to them. The following are from Marshall ads in Lab Animal: "All Marshall animals are raised in elevated, indoor pens that simulate the laboratory environment…"; "[b]y tracking all important characteristics and genetic information, and then weeding out undesirable stock, Marshall Farms can supply beagles ideal for research."

The situation in Serbia is terrible, in all Serbian towns there are flayer services to the communal service, who are engaged in capturing and killing lost or stray dogs and cats, in collaboration with the veterinary service and breaking the legislation. They charge this terrible "service" 50 euros for each corpse ( per killed dogs or cats). This behavior is punishable under article 269. of the Criminal Code of Serbia with up to 3 years of imprisonment.
We , The Society friends of Animals "Friend" and The Society for protect and welfare of animals"Arka" , collected the documents and material proofs confirming dose criminal abuses and gave them to allmost all local prosecutors in Serbia. There was no reply.
In spite of all our efforts , in spite of thousands of letters sent to the responsible institutions on the local and republican levels, nothing changed: in Serbia , thousands of dogs and cats are killed on a regular basis, and that crime is even paid for with the money of tax payers.

Stop the Namibian Seal Hunt
The second largest seal hunt in the world occurs in Namibia from July 1st through November 15th. This year the government has set the 2006 hunting quota at 85,000 pups; a level that combined with natural mortality could result in the annihilation of this year's entire seal pup population.

Despite declining numbers of pups born annually and seal populations that have not recovered from mass die-offs in 1994 and 2000, the quota increased from 50,850 pups in 1993 to 85,000 in 2006. The increase is motivated by monetary, rather than scientific, reasons.

Protest Ben & Jerry's Scoop of Lies

Ben & Jerry's is a company known not only for its frozen desserts, but also for its claims of social responsibility. Yet after nearly a year of promises—both verbal and written—to The HSUS that it would end its support for battery cage factory farming, the company has done an about-face. It has chosen to continue to buy eggs from factory farms that confine egg-laying hens in tiny battery cages so small the birds can't even spread their wings.
Please call Ben & Jerry's at 802-846-1500 (between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST). Urge the company to keep its promise to stop supporting battery cage cruelty. After you make your call, fill in the form at right to automatically send an email to Ben & Jerry's.

Cook County, Chicago

Angry because a 7-month-old Chihuahua urinated on the rug, a northwest suburban man grabbed the 4-pound puppy by the neck and threw it against a bedroom wall so hard the pet died of its injuries.   The man's two young stepchildren witnessed the violence against their puppy. See complete story: http://www.nbc5.com/family/9722113/detail.html  Chicago Sun-Times Inc.

John W. Meyer’s bail was set at $5,000, but no mention as to whether he posted the $500required for his release.

Mr. Meyer faces a maximum three-year prison sentence if convicted of the animal cruelty charge.

We the undersigned, support the Prosecuting Attorney for this case; in that Meyer’s felony charge remains unwavering, and that he rigorously seeks indictment.  We also agree that Mr. Meyer should receive psychological counseling.

Noting his treatment of the children, and fearing for their safety and welfare, we also feel they should not be allowed to remain in the same household as Mr. Meyer, nor have any contact with him.

Tell the Chinese Government to Cancel Plans to Kill Dogs
In a hideously cruel response to an outbreak of rabies in late July, authorities in Mouding County in Southwest China ordered the killing of more than 50,000 dogs, including 4,000 who were immunized against the disease. Officials clubbed many animals to death in the street right before their guardians' eyes. Animals who were not beaten mercilessly died equally violent, gruesome deaths by poisoning or electrocution. Now the Chinese government has issued orders to kill an additional 500,000 dogs. None of these beloved companions will have the benefit of a humane death, because there isn't a single law in China that prevents cruelty to animals.

China has a long history of cruelty and violence toward animals. In live-animal markets, animals—including dogs and cats—are skinned alive for their fur; merchants hack flesh from animals, piece by piece, until they finally bleed to death; and animals routinely suffer from broken limbs because they are thrown from the tops of transport trucks onto concrete floors.

Please demand that the Chinese government call off the planned slaughter of hundreds of thousands of dogs and enact strict anti-cruelty laws immediately. We will collect these letters, and our president will personally present them to the Chinese government. After you send us your letter by filling out the form, be sure to forward this alert to your friends and ask them to speak up today.

Please take action to help prevent great cruelty to donkeys in Festival of Pero Palo in Villanueva de la Vera

The festival of Pero Palo takes place in Villanueva de la Vera (Cáceres- Extremadura-Spain) every Shrove Tuesday. In this popular festival a poor and helpless donkey is taken through the streets of the village to be ridden by the drunkest rider and to be subjected to degrading and cruel treatment for more than an hour. The parliament of Junta de Extremadura passed a law (Ley 5/2002) for the Protection of Animals http://noticias.juridicas.com/base_datos/CCAA/ex-l5-2002.html

in the region of Extremadura which forbids the utilisation of animals in festivals and public shows when the animal receives cruel mistreatment.

However, every year the Junta de Extremadura approves the celebration of this unkind festival, forgetting what the law says.

El Refugio del Burrito and The Donkey Sanctuary have witnessed this festival since 1986. We thought that the passing of that law meant the end of the torture the donkey receives, but reality has proved that nothing has changed.

We want to stop this kind of event and we need your help to do it. We have written a letter of complaint that you can send to the president of the Junta de Extremadura. If you want to protest against this Festival, please click here. http://www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk/site/6/Villanueva_Campaign.html

And if you want to witness the Festival, here you have a video we have made for you. http://www.thedonkeysanctuary.org.uk/site/6/Villanueva_de_la_Vera.html

Aerial gunning is cruel and barbaric. Gunners shoot wolves -- easy targets against the snow -- from aircraft. Or they can chase the wolves from the air to the point of exhaustion, then land and shoot them at close range.

Urge the Bush administration to enforce the Federal Airborne Hunting Act.

Together, we can end Alaska's aerial gunning programs once.

Stop the Bush Administration’s Move to Allow Killing of Leatherbacks and
Whales in Leatherback Conservation Area!

Dear Leatherback Supporters,

The U.S. federal fishing agency - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Service – is poised to issue a new Fishing Permit which will eliminate a highly effective LEATHERBACK CONSERVATION AREA created to reduce the destruction caused by Drift Gillnet Fishing along the California and Oregon coast. The same fishing method has been banned on the high seas by the United Nations. Now the Bush administration wants to expand it off our coast.

The proposal would authorize the killing of the critically endangered leatherback sea turtle, humpback whale, short-finned pilot whale and sperm whale. Drift Gillnet fishing has been closed since 2001 in over 100,000 square miles along the West Coast for a four-month period each year to protect the leatherbacks. This important Leatherback Conservation Area has resulted in NO leatherback deaths since it was put in place.

Now the Bush administration is attempting to gut this important protection. Let them know this is UNACCEPTABLE!

Shut Down Internet Hunting July 27, 2006 9:26 AM

Shut Down Internet Hunting
Remote hunting via the Internet is a new and disturbing form of animal cruelty. A rifle and camera are mounted to a platform, which a person can control via computer from any location in the world, killing animals with a click of the mouse. Representative Tom Davis (R-VA) has introduced the Computer-Assisted Remote Hunting Act (H.R. 1558) which prohibits computer-assisted hunting. Please ask your U.S. Representative to co-sponsor this bill and shut down Internet hunting.

TAKE ACTION
Please call your U.S. Representative and urge him or her to co-sponsor the Computer-Assisted Remote Hunting Act. Click here to look up your Representative and his or her office phone numbers. Your comments do not have to be extensive—just a polite request to co-sponsor H.R. 1558. Be sure to leave your name and address so the office knows that you are a constituent.

Petition: Save Leo the Little Pomeranian March 30, 2006 4:21 AM

Save the Life of Leo the Little Pomeranian
http://www.petitiononline.com/LEO/petition.html

To:  ANIMAL LOVERS EVERYWHERE
Your URGENT help is need to save LEO!!!

Leo is a small Pomeranian that was turned into the LRAS shelter by heartless owners. They told the shelter that LEO would bite children, Not that he had bit one. This is a death sentence at this shelter. The City Attorney will not allow a dog that bites children( with or without proof that he actually has) to be adopted OR rescued. Leo has been visited by a rescue representative and was wonderful. He even gave kisses and showed no signs of aggression.
As any and all of us in Rescue know there are many homes without children, that would open their hearts & lives to him and there are many rescues willing to work with his problems. This should not be a death sentence for a perfectly healthy animal. We need to save little LEO!!! He already has a Rescue that wants him....

PLEASE take one moment to Sign our petition and SAVE LEO'S LIFE!!!

Thank you in Advance

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

China's shocking cat & dog fur trade!! March 27, 2006 10:49 AM

Those of you who have seen the films and heard about the horrible stories that goes on in china, will know that this petition is in urgent need!

Cats and dogs are being stolen from peoples homes and off the street to be taken to slaughter houses.

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/149041159

These animals are put through horrific amounts of truma and abuse before they even reach the slaughter houses. And once they are there they are killed in inhuman ways so not to rip the precious fur that they own. Some animals are still half consious when they get thier fur cut away.

Please help us stop this!

Petition to save homeless hurricane animals 5:13 PM
Cross posted from http://bestfriends.org
Click and sign. This is what the petition says. Let's hold the National Humane Organizations accountable for the money they collected to help the animals. Why is it not being spent for that?

Petition to save homeless hurricane animals
To: The National Humane Organizations

We, the undersigned, urge the national humane organizations to use all
the resources and funds that were donated to the hurricane relief
effort to ensure that animals still surviving on the streets of the
Gulf region are rescued and cared for. This would include:

* Providing volunteers to continue rescuing displaced pets still alive on the streets
* Providing staging areas to get them to safety
* Conducting a national adoption drive for all animals not reclaimed by their families

We also support the plan for humane organizations to join together
to invest remaining funds in programs that will radically improve the
quality of life for animals in the Gulf Coast region. This plan would
include:

* Low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter facilities
* Neighborhood sheltering and adoption capabilities
* Affordable health care for pets of low-income families
* A complete end to dog fighting and related animal abuse

PRESS RELEASE: NOV 22, 4 PM
November 22, 2005 : 11:31 PM
Hurricane Katrina: Campaign urges national animal organizations to spend the millions raised to help family pets, as intended.

Thousands of needy pets awaiting rescue still roam New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Three months after Hurricane Katrina, thousands of homeless pets still cling to life on the streets, waiting to be rescued, according to an assessment revealed by Best Friends Animal Society today.

The organization, which runs the nation’s largest companion animal sanctuary, is launching a petition drive on behalf of these pets and their displaced families.

“Compassionate citizens have already given their money to this cause. Now we’re asking them to give their voices, too, by signing a petition to ensure that these dogs and cats in the Gulf Coast region are not abandoned and that donated money be spent for what it was intended,” said Paul Berry, Best Friends’ director of operations.

Most national organizations suspended rescue operations over a month ago. But three months after the hurricane, independent rescuers report that thousands of displaced pets, belonging to people who have lost their homes, are still clinging to life, and that their situation is critical. Many of these pets are in destroyed and abandoned areas where food sources such as garbage cans are not available, and many of the structures these pets are using for shelter will soon be bulldozed.

“We’ve been working on the frontlines of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts since late August, and have not given up,” said Berry. “Our emergency rescue shelter outside of New Orleans still has up to 600 animals on any given day and brings in up to 40 animals a day from volunteer rescuers who continue to work in the field.” Berry said the Best Friends assessment, which was conducted last week, has confirmed some urgent and disturbing facts about the ongoing need for rescue efforts. The report (at www.bestfriends.org) cites interviews with local animal control officials, veterinarians, rescue agencies, and volunteers across the region.

“People all over the country donated tens of millions of dollars to rescue these animals,” said Berry. “All it takes now is a commitment from the animal welfare organizations to finish the job they undertook.”

That commitment includes:

- Providing volunteers to continue rescuing displaced pets still alive on the streets, encouraging volunteers to continue rescuing pets still alive on the streets, and providing staging areas to get them to safety

- Conducting a national adoption drive for all pets not reclaimed by their families

“Working together, we can do better than simply allowing these pets who have clung to life for so long to become the next generation of strays who will reproduce and ultimately be euthanized,” said Berry.

Best Friends is asking everyone who donated money to the rescue effort to sign a petition urging national animal welfare organizations to continue the rescue work as long as these traumatized family pets are still alive.

“We are inspired by Mayor Nagin’s plan to rebuild a better New Orleans,” said Berry, who is a native New Orleanian. “If funds remain after the rescue efforts are complete, they should be used to build a better New Orleans for companion animals. Once the remaining pets are safe, we can join together to invest in programs that will radically improve the quality of life for animals in the Gulf Coast region.”

These programs would include:

- Low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter facilities

- Neighborhood no-kill sheltering and adoption capabilities

- Affordable health care for pets of low-income families

- Model legislation to end dog fighting and related animal abuse

“This was an unprecedented tragedy for people and their pets,” said Berry. “But for local humane groups, once the rescue efforts are complete it can now be a unique opportunity to create a new reality for companion animals.

“So many people have given their time, effort, and money to the cause. Now they all need to add their voice to how the remaining money should be spent. That’s why we’re launching a petition drive to support this vision for the animals.”  [ send green star]

Bobcat kittens are frequently trapped in the wild and killed for their fur.

Click here to sign the fur-free pledge today.Dear Elizabeth,

The fashion news these days reads like a coroner's report: runways and sales racks alike are littered with the pelts of dead fur-bearing animals. And the news doesn’t get any better for compassionate consumers - they can find themselves unknowingly buying this cruelly produced fur or fur trim.

Animal pelts dyed bright colors, sheared, or woven can look deceptively like fabric or faux fur, and labeling loopholes allow a garment with fur to go unlabeled if it sells for less than $150.

That means common retail items, even discounted ones, can be made with pieces of real fur and identified with a misleading label – duping consumers into supporting this industry.

The Humane Society of the United States’ new Fur-Free Campaign is fighting back against the heartless fur industry, and I’m asking you to fight with us. Animals killed for these products suffer terribly, and are killed through horribly barbaric means such as anal or genital electrocution, clubbing, drowning, or neck-breaking. Here’s what you can do now to help save these animals:

Part 3-Pet shelter reform October 25, 2005 8:10 AM

SAMPLE LETTER

TO: Attorney General Paul G. Summers, District Attorney General Honorable Tom
P. Thompson, Tennessee District Attorneys Association, Governor Phil
Bredesen, Lieutenant Governor John S. Wilder, Senators Bill Frist and
Lamar Alexander

Honorable Officials of Tennessee:

I am writing you regarding the creation of legislation that will address
shelter reform in the town of Lebanon, Tennessee. There is a great need
for the following changes: a supervisor in charge of animal
control, taking animal control out of the purview of the police
department, a policy and procedure manual specifically stating
protocols regarding the humane treatment, handling, care and sheltering
of the animals, and certification and training ofanimal control
officers. In addition, personality tests are given to prospective
employees to determine the compatibility of the employees with the
duties required in handling and care of animals.

The latest incident which could have potentially been prevented had there been
a protocol and procedure in place at the Lebanon Animal Control facility,
occurred Sunday, October 16, 2005, when an animal control officer, Josh Greer,
decided not to take a mauled dog to a vet. The dog now faces leg amputation
after being left untreated.

The 4-year-old black Labrador retriever, Zania, was a playmate to a 4-year old
boy living in Mt. Juliet. She was picked up Friday, October 14, 2005, for
running loose and placed in the Lebanon Animal Control facility because Mt.
Juliet has no facility of its own. Zania was placed in a pen on Saturday with 3
other dogs, who for several hours, continuously attacked her until she was
found lying in a pool of blood Sunday afternoon. Zania was removed from the
pen, hosed off (to wash off all the blood), and left outside on the concrete.
She lie on the cold (50 degrees), wet concrete until an anonymous phone call
was made to the Director of the Humane Association of Wilson County, a
nonprofit, private agency with no ties to Lebanon Animal Control.

The dog was laying apparently lifeless on the concrete floor inside a chain
link fenced enclosure when the Director arrived. She discovered the dog was
still alive and called the Police Department, who came with an animal control
officer 30 minutes later. After another 30 minute delay, took the dog to the
Lebanon Animal Hospital. The Director confirmed with the animal control officer
that Zania was a healthy dog when she was picked up. They were also aware Zania
had been injured earlier by the other dogs and left to recover on her own.

Dr. Craig, the attending veterinarian, verified the dog was in shock and had a
subnormal temperature, had lost a lot of blood and would not have survived over
night if she had been left untreated at the animal control facility. His report
that night stated, "The patient was recumbent, unresponsive and in shock.
There were multiple deep soft tissue punctures to the legs, neck and
chest." The next morning, he reported, "The patient is minimally
responsive and still unable to stand. Her temperature is normal; however, blood
tests today indicate that the infection has entered her circulation in that
limb. Her prognosis at this point is guarded. It looks like she will lose her
leg if she lives."

Zania was violently attacked and left to die because of bad decisions. Those
bad decisions apart from the culpability of Josh Greer are a result of the lack
of proper protocol and procedural guidelines for such occurrences. This is not
the first occurrence of this nature, and there should be policies and
procedures that address these and other issues and not left to the discretion
of the employee. In addition to the policies and procedures, specific training
and certification in handling animals is needed to assure proper care and
welfare for the animals. We want this cruelty stopped now.

For the animals, I thank you,

Please cross post. Thank you.  [ send green star]

No! to killing and hunting baby harp seals October 19, 2005 4:06 PM

(forwarded)

DEAR FRIENDS, WE DO NEED TO SPREAD THE WORD ON THIS. MANY MORE SIGNATURES NEEDED, IF YOU HAVE NOT SIGNED YET, PLS CONSIDER DOING SO AND ALSO PLS CPOST THIS MSG AND ASK YOUR FRIENDS TO JOIN US. THANK YOU.

"" NO! TO KILLING AND HUNTING THE BABY HARP SEALS "

The Canadian government has announced plans to expand the harp seal "hunt" and permit the deliberate butchering of nearly one million baby harp seals over three years... the highest level of government-sanctioned slaughter since the 1960s. PLEASE SIGN THE PETITION TO TELL CANADA'S PRIME MINISTER THAT CLUBBING BABY SEALS TO DEATH IS BARBARISM AND EVIL AND NEEDS TO BE STOPPED IMMEDIATELY!!!

Please sign this petition to ban gas euthanasia in North Carolina, and pass it on.

Petition against the reclassification of rabbits to poultry August 18, 2005 6:16 PM

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/331778693
Please sign and crosspost if you don't agree with the USDA.
A full-page ad in the July 28th edition of The New York Times (sponsored by The Humane Farming Association, Animal Rights International, and the Animal Welfare Institute) notes that the US Department of Agriculture has classified rabbits as "poultry" to avoid including them under the 1958 Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, from which "poultry" are excluded.  Please note the date showing on this petition is a typo.  Does anyone know how to change it?  My daughter can't even get a response from The Petition Site on closing her Omak Suicide Race petition.  It's still getting signatures and has been sent off to the governor.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

This not far-fetched - Fine Particles cause harm also animals August 15, 2005 11:43 AM

New Petition: Campaign to Reduce Fine-Particle Emissions in Cities

Dear All!

This is a huge subject to tackle. Fine-particle emissions mainly from cars, buses, trucks, motorbikes and scooters in the cities have not only impact on our health but also new-born babies, animals, pets, trees, plants...
Researcher Ari Lampinen, scientist based in the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, very kindly helped me to create this new petition. If you are interested to use the same concept or to modify, and to petition authorities in your country or/and city, please, contact me. I just would like to know about it and possibly cooperate with you. We are in the same boat. feel free to post your friends. thank you!!

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/401470832

Campaign to Reduce Fine-Particle Emissions in Cities

We undersigned urge the Government of Finland immediately to transpose The Directive (2003/30/EC) that requires 2% of all road traffic fuels sold be biofuels in 2005 progressively increasing to reach a minimum of 5.75% of fuels sold in 2010.
We undersigned strongly urge Finland to exceed these goals, and to represent this plan in the conference of ASEM countries to be held in Helsinki, 2006, in September. We undersigned also strongly urge making electric cars and other zero emission vehicles like scooters and electric bicycles available for consumers with competititve prices by means of taxation.

Stavros Dimas, EU Commissioner for the Environment, says: “Most of us live in cities – so the quality of our urban environment is an issue of daily concern. European environmental legislation is already delivering cleaner air, improved wastewater treatment and many other benefits. We are now looking to see how we can best exploit the positive links between these laws, and how best to support local authorities in their efforts to improve the urban environment. We are seeking the views of citizens and experts alike on this.”  [ send green star]

anonymous Press Release July 06, 2005 5:42 AM

[OXNARD, CA] The GROUND LION was removed from the site and the FOIE GRAS is the main focus of removal at this time. At the present time there are 250 items of Foie Gras on Amazon.com for sale. A new petition, http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/939654786 is being sent to Jeff Bezos Founder & CEO Amazon.com Inc. "Birds raised for this gourmet cruelty are force-fed enormous quantities of food through a long metal pipe three times a day. This process of deliberate and painful overfeeding continues for up to a month, by which time the birds’ livers have swelled up to twelve times their healthy size," reports GourmetCruelty.com Originally, all foie gras came from France, but now the United States has gotten into this cruel "delicacy" industry. "Two companies produce all of the domestically raised foie gras in the United States. New York State’s Hudson Valley Foie Gras and California’s Sonoma Foie Gras. Combined, they are responsible for the torture and death of half a million ducks every year," reports GourmetCruelty.com Amazon.com is being petitioned to take the foie gras off of Amazon.com to avoid the onset of the continued boycott of Amazon.com by many concerned customers and interested parties. http://www.nomorehomelessanimals.org/boycottamazondotcom.html Jeff Bezos' commitment to Co-op America is that they are "GREEN" because: 1) its familiarity with and commitment to social and environmental responsibility, and 2) significant action in terms of this commitment. " Selling Foie Gras from Amazon.com certainly has violated this commitment to Co-Op America and Jeff Bezos may need to give up the Foie Gras or give up his company's commitment to Co-Op America. ###  [report anonymous abuse]

BPRC.... Can I please be a part of one of those covert operations that break into these hellholes at night, rescue the animals and then burn the places to the ground? I just can't help being vengeful when I see this kind of horror!!

Cavel, Inc., here in MY home state is still slaughtering horses and would be my first stop. Someone burned the place to the ground once but the bastards (pardon my language) just rebuilt and are running their murderous warehouse at full speed once again, making millions!!!

Tell Bush: Stop the importation of endangered species! The Bush administration is proposing to allow commercial trade in endangered species for the first time in over thirty years. This radical proposal would dramatically weaken the protections for over 550 foreign species now covered by the Endangered Species Act. Stand up for endangered species - take action today!

anonymous Re-Call the Election of Kirke Adams, District Attorney June 21, 2005 3:49 AM

From: "Lil Tykes Rescue & Adoption" Sent: Monday, June 20, 2005 11:39 PM Please read and sign our Petition Hello everyone, Our rescue has been following up on a local case of the cruel and uncalled Murder of a German Shepherd Service Dog. Our local D.A. Kirke Adams has taken the law into his own hands and allowed 3 of the folks who were present at the time of the incident go free and the other gets a slap on the wrist with a $50 fine and some Community Service hours. This is like slapping everyone in the face and telling us that anyone can come and destroy our properties, lives and our companions and get away with it.. Anyone that doesn't know the story can go to the link below: http://www.admiralsantiques.com/dothan_eagle_news_on_fuzzy.htm Have your tissue on hand, because it is a crying shame that our elected officials can be so carefree with our lives and what we care for, yet what would happen if these same perpertrators had shot a human while in the process? What are they able to do next and get away with? Are they going to be our next Serial Killers just for the thrill of things? We need your help to make our point about our feelings and rights. If not, now when??? Please read and sign our Petition to Re-Call the Election of Kirke Adams, District Attorney, 33rd Judicial Circuit of Alabama. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/856206757 Thanks and God Bless! Sorry June 20, 2005 7:06 PM

Burton, I signed your petition but I'm sorry Carolyn, I cannot sign the PETA petition as I do not support PETA at all.  They are animal rights extremetists that would have all of us turn our beloved pets free to fend for themselves and never be allowed to have another one.  They have internal problem with employees that have recently come to light.   They have turn hundreds of show dogs loose out of their crates at dog shows to run free and get injuried or lost from their owners.   I cannot in good consciencious support a group such as that.

anonymous PETITION supporting PETA June 20, 2005 10:28 AM

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/675306552 People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), with more than 800,000 members, is the largest animal rights organization in the world. Founded in 1980, PETA is dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals. PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. PETA focuses its attention on the four areas in which the largest numbers of animals suffer the most intensely for the longest periods of time: on factory farms, in laboratories, in the clothing trade, and in the entertainment industry. We also work on a variety of other issues, including the cruel killing of beavers, birds and other "pests," and the abuse of backyard dogs. PETA works through public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns. Ingrid Newkirk is cofounder and president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the largest animal rights organization in the world. Ingrid Newkirk's campaigns to save animal lives have made the front pages of the Washington Post and other national newspapers. She has appeared on many national television and radio shows, including The Today Show, Phil Donahue,The Oprah Winfrey Show, West 57th, Nightline, and 20/20 among others. Ingrid Newkirk has spoken internationally on animal rights issues, from the steps of the Canadian Parliament to the streets of New Delhi, India, where she spent her childhood. She is the author of Save the Animals! 101 Easy Things You Can Do; Kids Can Save the Animals! 101 Easy Things to Do; The Compassionate Cook; 250 Ways to Make Your Cat Adore You; You Can Save the Animals: 251 Simple Ways to Stop Thoughtless Cruelty, and Free the Animals!, as well as numerous articles on the social implications of our treatment of animals in our homes, slaughterhouses, circuses, and laboratories. It's time that people learn about PETA and the work that they do instead of formulating negative opinions just at the mention of their name. We stand by your Mission Statement and the work that you do to stop the Animal Cruelty. Your mission statement is found here: http://www.peta.org/about/ and the FAQ is found here: http://www.peta.org/about/faq.asp The Fact Sheets can be found here: http://www.peta.org/mc/facts.asp  [report anonymous abuse]

Rottweiler Severely Beaten June 20, 2005 9:21 AM

Case Report
Police tried to coax Eric Barkman of Cambria County out of his home after receiving a call from neighbors who say he severely beat his Rotweiller with a small wooden beam. It was reported that it was lying in a pool of blood in a garage. Allegedly the Rotweiller snapped at its owner, Eric Barkman and his eight year old daughter and that's when Barkman began beating his dog.

A neighbor stated, Barkman's daughter came over and said the dog bit her dad again and it tried to bite her again and then we heard the noise in the backyard.

The neighbor stated that noise was a rotweiller, named Pepper, yelping as his owner beat him with a piece of wood. Authorities stated Barkman put the injured and bleeding dog in the garage and threw a mattress over him.

When police arrived on scene, Barkman refused to come out of his house. The State Dog Warden and Johnstown's Animal Control Officer managed to coax Pepper out of the garage while he was bleeding from his mouth, eye, and back.

Neighbors say the sad irony of the situation is Pepper was abused by a past owner, rescued, and then given to the Barkmans who said they'd care for the dog.

Johnstown Police stated Barkman faces several charges that could lead to a fine up to a thousand dollars or up to two years in prison. They also say they can't force Barkman out of his home because his charges are considered minor. Authorities were writing up a warrant to enter his home and they plan on getting him out of the house the next day.

Pepper was taken to a veterinary clinic in Ebensburg.

Before this incident, Barkman was already facing charges for serving alcohol to minors in January. For that charge, he faces five years in jail, plus fines and five years for cruelty to animals.

There is ONE  young lady who is trying really hard to help the stray animals there....she can do with much more support as there are over 14.000 straydogs.....

Unique shelter protects Romanian dogs

Galatzi, Romania - The no-kill ROLDA shelter seeks to aid and protect the estimated 14,000 stray dogs wandering around the city of Galatzi, Romania. The organization conducts spay/neuter clinics, keeps the dogs in its shelter until they recuperate from surgery, and then releases and feeds them. The shelter also keeps dogs for adoption and provides a permanent home to dogs with disabilities or illnesses. The group, which has received support from several U.S. organizations, was called the best shelter in Eastern Europe in the May 2004 issue of Animal People.
