Fred H.	9/11 Investigation (PENTTBOM) October 19, 2009 1:19 PM They were the most lethal terrorist attacks in history, taking the lives of 3,000 Americans and international citizens and ultimately leading to far-reaching changes in anti-terror approaches and operations in the U.S. and around the globe. Our ensuing investigation of the attacks of 9/11/01—code-named “PENTTBOM”—was our largest investigation ever. At the peak of the case, more than half our agents worked to identify the hijackers and their sponsors and, with other agencies, to head off any possible future attacks. We followed more than half-a-million investigative leads, including several hundred thousand tips from the public. The attack and crash sites also represented the largest crime scenes in FBI history. Fred H.	November 17, 2009 11:57 AM Zacarias Moussaoui first came to our attention on August 15th, when we received information about the suspicious circumstances of his flight training. The FBI worked with the INS and Moussaoui was detained the next day by the INS on a visa infraction. The FBI continued to investigate Moussaoui after his detention. As we uncovered information on the September 11 attacks, and as is alleged in the indictment, Moussaoui followed many of the same patterns and took many of the same steps as the 19 hijackers. As the indictment charges: Moussaoui was present at an al Qaeda-based terrorist training camp in Afghanistan three years ago. He attended flight school and took commercial flight training courses. He purchased flight deck videos from an Ohio Flight Store, just as Mohammed Atta and other hijackers had done before him. He purchased knives and protective equipment. He looked into global positioning system technology. Like Atta, he also researched crop dusting. The indictment also alleges that Moussaoui was linked to Ramzi Bin al-Shibh, an associate of Atta who tried unsuccessfully to get into America on four separate occasions. [ send green star]

November 18, 2009 3:33 PM As the indictment charges: At the time of al-Shibh's last failed attempt to enter the U.S., Moussaoui was contacting flight schools and making arrangements to have a legitimate presence in the U.S. In February 2001, he arrived in the U.S., opened a bank account with $32,000 in cash, and immediately enrolled in a flight school. In early August 2001, Moussaoui received $14,000 from Germany from al-Shibh. On August 10th, he paid for flight lessons with $6,300 in cash. I want to thank all those who contributed to today's indictment, including our partners here in the U.S. and overseas, whose cooperation and investigative skills were invaluable. Our own Lenny Hatton was one of those who, despite the danger, selflessly assisted in the evacuation of the World Trade Center. Hatton and the 441 other public safety officers who died in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The Medal of Valor is the nation's highest award for law enforcement officers who perform acts above and beyond the call of duty exhibiting exceptional courage, extraordinary decisiveness, and presence of mind, as well as unusual swiftness of action regardless of personal safety in an attempt to save or protect human life. The 9/11 Heroes Medal of Valor was created specifically to recognize those public safety officers who lost their lives that day. [ send green star]
Fred H.	November 24, 2009 3:20 PM This is a fitting tribute to those whose ultimate sacrifice saved so many. The impact of their courage is not limited to September 11. In truth, it will be felt for years to come -- both in the lives of those they rescued from dire situations, and in the hearts of those who witnessed their bravery. Lenny Hatton's actions on September 11, 2001, exemplify the best of our nation.
