China, Russia Object to Weapons in Space

China and Russia yesterday told a U.N. body that the threat from
space-based weapons would be equal to that posed by
weapons of mass destruction, Reuters reported (see GSN, May 11).

The U.N. Conference on Disarmament is looking to begin negotiations on
preventing an arms race in outer space. The United Kingdom and United
States have expressed their opposition to such talks (see GSN, May 18).

Russian Ambassador to the conference Valery Loshchinin likened the
weaponization of outer space to the “emergence of a new type of weapon
of mass destruction.”

“If there are no weapons in outer space, no room for the use of force, then there
will be no arms race there. We must nip it in the bud,” he said.

“A world free of outer space weapons is no less important than a world
free of the weapons of mass destruction,” said China’s ambassador to
the conference, Cheng Jingye.

“The development of outer space weapons keeps progressing quietly and relevant military doctrine is taking shape,” he said.

The White House is expected issue a new space policy for the first time in

You know, i think they might actually have a chance at this bombing thing, because, depending on where you live, people finally becoming intelligent and turning against bush may NOT be the case.

Maybe they would love to 'nuke' Iran - but they know what the effects would be - and they just wouldn't know if the whole world would go up!  It wouldn't just be a couple of bombs on Iran as they did on Japan!   They were the only ones with the bomb then - it's different now.  And where would the fall-out go?  Even if nobody nuked them back?  I grew up with the threat of nuclear war!  Until there is multilateral disarmament there is always the possibility!  If they totally lose their marbles!!!  Maybe I should look out the sandbags again for under the kitchen table.  Protect and Survive - what a joke!!!    [ send green star]

Signed the petition June 5, 2006.  The whole world needs to work together to make sure that Bush's empire goes down.  I fear for North America and now in Canada, we have Harper, who seems to want to be a Bush twin....it scares me for my family and friends.

Iran's nuclear aspirations are long term, and require problem management rather than crisis escalation. To that end, we need negotiation and realistic planning, not rash talk of using nuclear weapons in Iraq.

That's why we're asking Representatives across the country to join Cong. Ed Markey's (D-MA) call to the President to take nuclear weapons off the table in its dealings with Iran.

Threats of the "nuclear option" undermine America's role in lowering the danger from nuclear weapons, and make other non-nuclear countries less willing to commit to renouncing nuclear technology. If a non-nuclear country like Iran can be threatened, non-nuclear states validly begin to wonder what is to stop a nuclear power from threatening them?

Smart, tough diplomacy has a history of producing satisfactory resolution to international problems. Escalating rhetoric is needlessly escalating this problem. Whether it was our relationship with China in the 1970's or America's history with the Soviet Union before its collapse, diplomacy has been an effective way to keep threats to America in check.

On the other hand, a nuclear attack would produce sever, lasting damage. In addition to the devastating effect of the explosion itself, which would spread nuclear waste across South Asia, any nuclear attack would inflame the very extremism it was intended to suppress and shatter the international taboo that has made the use of nuclear weapons unimaginable since the end of World War II.

We need as many legislators as possible to join Rep. Markey. Please contact your member of Congress today!
