Help Stop the Slaughter of Baby Seals March 10, 2010 2:31 PM
We are sure you are as sick to your stomach over the Canadian seal massacre as we are. For the sake of the baby seals and their mothers, we are determined to do all we can to stop it. And it will take a lot, but we are up to the task!
Standing no chance against armed sealers, many baby seals are cruelly slaughtered before they even eat their first solid meal or learn how to swim. Sealers often hook the seals by the eye, cheek or mouth to avoid damaging their fur, before dragging them across the ice in many cases while the seal is still conscious.
2. Donate online right now to help with our vital campaigns, working at the roots to stop the suffering of all animals for their skins or for any other reason.
3. Don't buy or wear fur, and tell your friends and family members to do the same. The fur industry cannot survive without demand.
PETA's efforts are having a major impact, and this can only continue with support from you!
The European Union already prohibits the sale of seal fur thanks to your support, which made possible our critical work on the vote for the EU ban last summer. And the worldwide demand for seal fur is plummeting! Last year, about three-quarters of the baby seals who had been marked for death were spared.
But despite this progress, we are not yet near the end of this campaign. Tens of thousands of gentle baby seals are still shot or have their skulls crushed by sealers every year.
Please help protect animals who currently face suffering and death by making the most generous gift you can afford to support PETA's work to end the Canadian seal slaughter and the cruelty and carnage of the entire skins trade and to help all animals who need us to be there for them.
Very truly yours,
Ingrid E Newkirk Founder
PS We can and must do more than simply bear witness to the terrible cruelty and the wanton greed and vanity that drives the demand for all types of fur. Please add your voice to our petition and make a donation to help end this horrific suffering.
Seals In Canada Need Your Help, Now And On March 15
This month, the worlds largest slaughter of marine mammals is scheduled to resume, even as an environmental disaster is killing seal pups. This year, there are barely any ice floes in eastern Canada. The ice is critical for seals to nurse their young and for the pups to gain strength in order to survive. If Prime Minister Stephen Harper does not intervene and cancel the hunt, sealers will kill the few remaining survivors. Please join IDA supporters and other compassionate people around the world by taking action today and on March 15, the Day of Action for Seals in Canada. Click here to see what you can do for seals right now.
On March 15, animal protection advocates across the U.S. held outreach events at Canadian Consulates, the Canadian Embassy, and elsewhere to urge the public to help end Canada's commercial seal hunt. Thousands of flyers were distributed encouraging comments to Canadian Ambassador Greg Doer and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to cancel this years' hunt, scheduled to begin this coming Sunday, and to end Canada's commercial seal hunt permanently.
