Hi M,

You create the petition, we will care!

But I get your drift - what to say.

Let me get my facts straight:

Allianoi is a globally important ancient site. Because it is a town it is extensive?

There is a plan to dam the area and to submerge Allianoi, without any significant archaeological works in order to salvage the heritage of Allianoi?

Allianoi has been in arid conditions for hundreds of years, submerging it will mean most of the well preserved metalwork will rapidly decay and be lost, in addition, the water will undermine the upstanding buildings and most likely cause a significant loss to the fabric of this ancient city.

What should the petition call for?

You have two choices:

1. put the dam somewhere else, or.

2. Fund em emergency excavations immediately, ideally move large section of the town to a place nearby.

You will need to choose, I recommend option 2, which I think is the most deliverable.

I see there is a third option - modify the dam plan so that Allianoi can be preserved.

Tell me, what is the current state of construction and how much of the archaeology will the funding allow to be preserved?

Invia cerca Versione stampabile SAVE UNIQUE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF ALLIANOI, TURKEY 2005-11-14 Europa Nostra EUROPA NOSTRA URGES TURKISH PRIME MINISTER TO SAVE UNIQUE ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF ALLIANOI, TURKEY The Hague, 14 November 2005: Europa Nostra – the pan-European federation for cultural heritage – has launched a final appeal to halt the closure of the Yortanli Dam, pending a comprehensive plan for the safeguard of the site of Allianoi near Bergama. An open letter has been addressed to HE Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Prime Minister of Turkey, and signed by Otto von der Gablentz, Europa Nostra’s Executive President, urging the Turkish Government to avert the imminent destruction of the Roman Baths at Allianoi. This appeal has been launched on the basis of mounting opposition against the flooding of Allianoi both locally and internationally. On 13 October, the Regional Council for Preservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage, Izmir (Turkey) recalled that earlier this year Allianoi was declared as a first degree archaeological site and observed that flooding the site would thus constitute an illegal act. The Council has therefore called for the postponement of the flooding, pending a report by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism on adequate measures for the conservation of Allianoi. “Allianoi bears witness to an important period of European history, and forms part of our common European heritage. We sincerely hope that the Turkish Government will find a way to safeguard Allianoi, thus confirming its determination to fully integrate the important objective of the conservation and enhancement of our common European heritage in its policies and priorities” stressed Otto von der Gablentz in his letter to the Prime Minister. In September, Europa Nostra, together with ICOMOS and the European Association of Archaeologists, wrote to Mr Ali Babacan, Turkish Minister of State for EU Relations and members of the Turkish Government on this matter but to date has not yet received a reply explaining the position of the Turkish Government. At the same time Europa Nostra launched an on-line campaign (www.europanostra.org/save_allianoi.html) seeking wider citizens’ support for the Allianoi appeal. This campaign continues to gain momentum, with support signatures received from twenty five countries. Europa Nostra also welcomes the interest that the European Union has shown in the international campaign to save Allianoi: Mr Olli Rehn, the European Commissioner for Enlargement has written to the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr Abdullah Gül. In addition, Mr Nikolaos Sifunakis, MEP, Chairman of the Committee on Culture and Education of the European Parliament has written to the Turkish Ambassador to the EU and raised the matter at the October Plenary Session of the European Parliament. Allianoi, built in the 2nd century AD under Emperor Hadrian, owes its present day value to the fact that it is a rare example of a Roman Bath built outside an urban setting and also due to its good state of conservation with walls and colonnades standing up to the second floor level. It presents great historic and art historic interest which deserves much more profound field study than it has yet been able to receive. There is widespread support in Turkey for the preservation of Allianoi, as shown by the continuous attention to the case in the Turkish media and the 30,000 signatures collected among Turkish visitors to Allianoi. Even though the site has not yet been fully excavated and its tourist infrastructure could be further developed, many travel organisations assert that even in its present state, it is already of very great interest to them. Creating further amenities and possibly developing the spa for present day use in a historic setting would ensure a sustainable development benefiting the region and one which would most probably outlive the projected lifespan of the irrigation dam. This is a difficult one.

The dam is almost complete, although it needs extra funding but nonetheless I could not see our government do a u-turn in a similar situation.

I notice there was a petition with 35,000 signatures on it which has not made an impact. Things would be different if this was not a major government project.

It would help to get a copy of the petition.

The campaigners are asking for letters to be sent, which is one area we could help out. Here is their sample letter but I think any we do will have to be much simpler:

{insert your city and date}

Your Excellency,

Roman Baths at Allianoi have to be preserved!

I write to you to add my voice to the campaign against the ongoing construction of the Yortanli Dam on the River Ilya which, once finalised, will flood the valuable Roman Baths at Allianoi, near Bergama in November this year. As a citizen concerned with the preservation of our common European cultural heritage, I fully support Europa Nostra’s appeal to the Turkish Government to relocate the dam to a nearby more suitable location. This international protest backs the national concern for the future of the site, as shown by the 35,000 signatures that were collected at the site among the visitors of which 30,000 were Turkish.

As you know, the site of Allianoi, from Hadrianic times, has been very well preserved (large parts up to a height of two stories), and features a courtyard with six columns and beautiful well preserved mosaics. The beauty and good state of preservation of the site, added to its historic significance - being one of the few Roman Baths ever to have been constructed outside of an urban environment - render significant its potential for tourist development. The healing hot springs could also be revived into an attractive spa in a heritage setting with modern facilities.

By ordering a relocation of the irrigation dam, the Turkish Government would both save a significant site of Europe’s common cultural heritage, as part of our shared memory and identity, but also as an asset for sustainable cultural and health tourism development, while still addressing the needs of the regional agricultural sector.

Sincerely,

I have contacted Europa Nostro to ask how we can best be of help, they have responded that they will consider it and get back to me.

My own campaign - www.timewatch.org, is about to kick off big time, Tara is also moving into overdrive.

We are going to need some more active help if we are to make an impact.

Sorry, been busy.

Still no answer.

I've decided they need to know we have some power they could use.

Lets use this letter to create a petition for Care2 and use this to spread the word about Allianoi.

I'd prefer it if one of the hosts of this group would set it up, but I'd like it done by tomorrow if possible as I'm about to start a March campaign in World Heritage Alert and I think this should be included. We can no longer wait - action is needed and this must be the start.

I'm sorry,It's difficult to explain how important these places are,but there was a  "copy." of it,very similar,in San Francisco,(long ago demolished, and never preserved.)and I wish my children could've seen it,it' s hard to "describe the  importance of great, historical, and unique ART. without actually seeing it,and without being at the place. and understanding the humongous amount of soul and hard work that went into bulding it.", It would be a tradgedy if we all can't preserve the REAL ROman baths for future generations!!!!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

The first thing is to get widespread awareness of the problem.

Please keep forwarding the petition and link to our group.
