Republican Christie captures NJ governor’s race

TRENTON, N.J. — Chris Christie, an aggressive former prosecutor who racked up a perfect conviction rate in public corruption cases and became the darling of New Jersey’s Republican Party establishment, has unseated the deep-pocketed but unpopular Gov. Jon Corzine.

 Christie, 47, on Tuesday became the first member of his party in a dozen years to win a statewide contest in heavily Democratic New Jersey. President Barack Obama invested heavily in the race, campaigning with Corzine five times on three separate visits.

With 75 percent of precincts reporting, Christie had 50 percent of the vote compared to 44 percent for Corzine. Independent candidate Chris Daggett, who at one point had been feared as a potential spoiler, had about 5 percent.

Christie accepted public financing in the race against the wealthy incumbent and was outspent by more than $12 million. He did get financial help from the Republican Governors Association and other national Republican groups, which bought television time in the pricey New York and Philadelphia media markets.

Christie ran on a platform of smaller government and relentlessly criticized Corzine for what he called poor economic stewardship — unemployment was 9.8 percent in October and property taxes averaged $7,045 per household, the nation’s highest. But he was criticized during the campaign for remaining vague about how he would solve New Jersey’s chronic fiscal problems.

The physically robust Christie endured an onslaught of personal attacks from the Corzine campaign; his weight even became a central issue at one point.

Christie made a reputation for himself as a hard-charging U.S. attorney who locked up 130 officials without losing a single corruption case.

However, his image as an ethics champion was questioned when revelations emerged that he had lent a subordinate money but failed to report it, and that he’d been involved in a traffic accident but was not ticketed.

In the final days of the campaign, while Corzine was campaigning with Obama and former President Bill Clinton, Christie hit all 21 counties aboard a bus, campaigning with New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean.

Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina, who was sharply criticized when he yelled, “You lie,” during Obama’s health care speech to a joint session of Congress, stumped for Christie in the campaign’s final weekend.

I can not express how pleased I am.  Today has been a long day but a great day.  I have literally been fighting this man for 3-1/2 years.  New Jersey's time has finally come.  My guys never win this state....Let's hope this is the beginning of better days.

Hi Robert! We are not being self-analytic! This is reality dude! Just look at the news headlines when you wake up. In fact, prepare yourself more what is going on today... All Obama and his cronies had to do was to be Americans.... Not so difficult .

Their "progressive" poison is coming to an end... it's true...

Pay attention to the Tea Parties man. Don't listen to Pelosi or any of the Kool-Aid makers that the Tea Parties are not composed of the American People... "Yes they are"!

I also said when Obama was elected... That he was elected based on older, first time, never again voters... and the young first time voters, all of who never have paid attention to politics before or since Obama... They were riled up to vote in 2008 for the sake of history to have a first black President. And it is true. They didn't care that their choice of black President had no experience, competence or business in being the leader of the most powerful country in the world... as a result, his Presidency will go down in history as a failure. I actually feel sorry for him because it wasn't all his fault. "You" who voted for him are to blame as well. You all could have found a more competent and experienced candidate who would have done much better... How about your Colin Powell for instance?  I know he is embarrassed as well for being caught up in the idiocy of the Dems choice with Obama because he jumped the fence on that one too, but once over there with you all, he should have recognized the nightmare to America that was about to happen and he should have done something... He could have even thrown his own hat in the arena and bumped Obama out of the running... But no... that was not the case. We don't even hear of your Colin Powell anymore do we? Yep, he's embarrassed and should be... .

It is commendable for you all of the Dem states to stand by your man, but at some point, you have to be sick of the crap too...

No one could foresee how bad a President Obama would be and his failures, lies and Chicago like politics are reverberating through the country and it does not bode well for the Democrats who are destroying our Nation.

Thank God for the Blue Doggs and the Independents… 

The Left of the Left Liberals or the Progressives, will soon observe what the “American People” think about your Progressive Politics in American Politics. Obama and his cronies just may be a blessing in disguise by revealing to the American people who were never really sure of what true Progressivism is… It is Socialism/Marxism and has no place in this country…
