Simply Step Inside Central America with me... To travel to Central America from afar the first time can be downright confusing. First one should purchase a good up to date guidebook or two, specific to the country or countries you are travelling to, and as well maps of the country or region so you may orient yourself. After reading up about travel options in your guidebook you shall then be ready to surf the web a bit and find lodging places and tour operators suited to your travel budget. Knowledge of Spanish is of course a big plus as in countries such as El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua many small and medium size hotels and operators who offer excellent services for low prices often have sites only in the Spanish language, the more of the language you speak, anywhere in the world, the more economical your journey becomes. I live and work in Central America for nearly 20 years as may be seen on my bio: http://www.jetsetliving.com/article/postcard_from_latin_america.html and for 14 years I was a tour guide and assisted other small and medium sized operators in the region when receptive tourism, except in Costa Rica, was in it's infancy throughout most of Central America due to civil conflict, poor roads, a lack of tourism infrastructure and other problems that gratefully have been solved or are in the process of being solved today. With my Central American expertise I am able to assist you whether travelling for business or pleasure,, or thinking of investing in real estate, tourism or small business, or simply relocating to region to retire. There are many friendly and proud people waiting to serve you and help you to Discover the Undiscovered Central America!

Hello, my name is Christina. You will have to excuse my bad spanish, I have not used it in awhile. I am happy to be here, and learn about Peru. Thanks for the invitation Paola. I speak spanish a little.
for inviting me here, Paola. I hope to learn a lot about Peru, especially the cuisine, my husband loves to cook!
I don't speak Spanish, although I understand bits when others are speaking or writing in Espanol. So maybe I'll pick up some more while I'm browsing the topics in here.
I love Peru, and one day I will go there, hopefully before Machu Pichu disapears (I think I spelt that wrong, but I'm ill at the moment - I have a bad head cold and sinus problem, so can't concentrate)
Anyway, sorry this is a short post, I just wanted to say hi, and let you know that I'm here, even though I'm quiet at the moment.
By the way, I love the recipe thread, Rohan will enjoy cooking some of those meals.

Many thanks to all those who sent me well wishes, Nanette I would kill for some Chicken Soup with lots of Nandos Hot Sauce mixed in (perfect cure for a cold). Oh well, hubby is going to make me some Spicy Noodles instead as we've not got any chicken Soup, or chicken to make soup. I have to go shopping tomorrow - lol
Yes I really must learn Spanish someday, I'll probably pick up loads on here though. I just have a habit of absorbing languages, although I'm only fluent in English.
I know enough to get by in French, German, Italian, Japanese & Welsh, and I am about to embark upon my dream of learning Russian. Yay, there's a conversation class at the University of Wales, Swansea, this month, so hopefully I'll pick it up quite easily. If I pass the coversation course, I will go on to do the certificates next year. I always wanted to speak Russian.
Oh well, I guess that's all from me for today, as I'm still not 100% better. Thanks again to all of you xxxx

Dear Paola, I am a transaltor from Spanish into English, I have corrected a bit your introduction to the group (from your literal English into conceptual English)..you may or may not wish to use the new text, up to you.

How English is taught in Latin America September 23, 2005 2:57 PM
Not your fault, here in El Salvador many of the Docentes (Professors) of ENGLISH know the Grammar backwards and forwards but many are unable to either speak nor compose in the English language they teach students It seems many of these Docentes are in their positions because of "cuello" (literally means neck in English, but slang for 'having connections' here in Central America), as well many natives return from USA and Canada, and since anyone can advertise as an "English Teacher" who speaks English, so, these teachers, in small colegios (high schools) or in private classes teach this form of literal English to the principiantes (beginning students) who do not realize the difference..and since some of these persons know everything (since they have nothing more to learn) they do not accept constructive criticism well. I am only able to formally translate from Spanish into English and many of my native friends vice versa. One "teacher" angrily told me once to stop "correcting him" (his English composition was very poor and his students were failing other exams) however he was not fired since he was a relative of the school manager. Now if someone claims to be an "English Teacher" I will certainly correct them, anyone else trying to speak English I will of course try to assist. In Peru, unfortunately, foreigners need a PERMIT from the Peruvian Government just to TRAIN native English Teachers! Had a friend who went to lima several months and gave up..he was native of Europe, a legal resident of Bolivia and fluent in Spanish, English and 5 other languages.
I invite anyone who wishes to travel to Central America to train Teachers in ESL as most of our young people cannot afford the tuition to attend the prestigious American, British, International pr Pan American High Schools (where they teach in English and yes they hire abroad, good wages, housing and RT ticket on year contract - certified teachers only -) There are "American Schools" and "British Schools" in all the Latin American country capital cities except Havana, I suppose!
Bueno quiza algún día pueda ver a mis amigos otra vez.
Thanks Paola for invite me to join.
I always has been interested about Perú, the culture, the people,I want to Know more about your custom. I have friends in Lima and I have 7 years that I don't see them, I lost contact with them.
Well maybe some day I can see my friends again.
thanks a lot again and if you want to know somenthing about Venezuela ask me and maybe I could help you.
Thank you soo much Paola for inviting me to your wonderful group! I am honoured indeed and look forward to learning all I can about your beautiful country!

I think it is the most important archaeological discovery of the century!

Hola Paola. I can read some Spanish -- much better than I can speak it. But I would like to improve on both. I studied it when I was in elementary school briefly, and then in high school. I also studied Latin American studies in college.
