The need to touch and be touched is established early in our
lives, as we develop and grow in the omnipresent embrace of our mother's womb.
Once we are born, separated from that sanctuary of connectivity, we begin to
crave the physical embrace of our parents. As we age, we become more
independent. Yet during times of triumph or trouble and during those moments
when we are in need of reassurance, we can't help but long for a hug.
Because a hug requires two active participants, each individual taking
part in the embrace experiences the pleasure of being embraced and the joy that
comes from hugging someone. As both individuals wrap their arms around one
another, their energy blends together, and they experience a tangible feeling of
togetherness that lingers long after physical contact has been broken. A heart
hug is when you put your left arm over someone's shoulder and your right arm
around their waist. As they do the same to you, your hearts become aligned with
one another other and loving, comforting energy flows between the two of you to
flood your souls with feelings of love, caring, and compassion.
A hug is
a pleasurable way to share your feelings with someone who is important to you.
Depending on your relationship with the other person and the kind of message you
wish to send to them, a hug can communicate love, friendship, romance,
congratulations, support, greeting, and any other sentiment you wish to convey.
A hug communicates to others that you are there for them in a positive way. In
an instant, a hug can reestablish a bond between long lost friends and comfort
those in pain. The next time you hug someone, focus all of your energy into the
embrace. You will create a profound connection that infuses your feelings and
sentiments into a single beautiful gesture.

A Hug Is A hug is a wonderful gift to share, A way to show each other that we care; There is so much a hug is able to do, When you feel those arms holding you. A hug is a place to feel safe and warm, A comfort for a sad heart that is torn; An expression of the love in our heart, For ones who we wish, never to be apart. A hug is a greeting when we meet to say hello, Or to say goodbye when we have to go; It can hold us up when life gets us down, And makes us smile, instead of frown. A hug can be given for no reason at all, And given to those, both big and small; We're never too old to feel the joy it brings, As it is one of life's most pleasing things. And for all of this beauty, a hug is free! It costs nothing, yet means so much to me; We should all hug another to show we care, For to feel a warm hug, nothing can compare.
According to Kathleen
Keating, R.A., M.N., author of The Hug Therapy Book, hugs take many
forms depending on what you want to communicate. A few examples include: The Bear Hug--ideal for two individuals of disproportionate sizes and for saying, "You're terrific," or "You can count on me".
The
A-Frame--Brief embrace ideal for little-known relatives and situations
requiring a bit of formality. All of the hugging takes place above the
neck. This hug communicates polite caring or detached warmth. Great for
new huggers.
The Cheek Hug--A tender hug that can be executed
sitting or standing. This hug says "I'm sorry you're disappointed," or
is ideal to share joy or greet an elderly relative.
The Group
Hug--Great for good friends sharing an activity or project. Group hugs
communicate support, security, affection, unity and universal belonging.

"Hugging
is healthy: it helps the body's immunity system, it keeps you
healthier, it cures depression, it reduces stress, it induces sleep,
it's invigorating, it's rejuvenating, it has no unpleasant side
effects, and hugging is nothing less than a miracle drug.
Hugging
is all natural: it is organic, naturally sweet, it has no pesticides,
no preservatives, no artificial ingredients, and is 100% wholesome.
Hugging
is practically perfect: there are no movable parts, no batteries to
replace, no periodic check-ups, has low energy consumption, high energy
yield, is inflation-proof, non-fattening, has no monthly payments, no
insurance requirements, is theft-proof, non-taxable, non-polluting, and
is, of course, fully refundable."
I think it's a James Taylor song that talks about a hunger in the center of the chest. I esp love hugging my granchildren really close. I learned with my baby sister years ago that babies love to be wrapped snuggly. Well, I think a nice firm Grammie hug is just as good any day.
There is a lot to be said for hugs, don't you think?
