Farm windmills have several functions.

Windmills may look like charming decorative pieces on old fashioned farms, but the structures actually have several useful purposes. Centuries ago, windmills were used on farms for everything from pumping water to generating machinery. The windmill was actually an early form of electricity, giving power to farm equipment and helping to grind crops.

HowStuffWorks "How Steam Engines Work"
science.howstuffworks.com/transport/engines-equipment/steam.htm
Steam engines powered all early locomotives, steam boats and factories -- they fueled the Industrial Revolution. Learn how the steam engine produces power!
Quote:
"The horizontal mill steam engine of yesteryear was the 350 Chevy of the nineteenth century: the most common engine known to man. This engine and its larger cousins had a thousand and one uses, from grinding grain, pumping water, running electrical generators, and more.
This steam engine is capable of putting out enough power to drive a 500-watt generator, depending on the pressure from your boiler. When the neighbors run out of gasoline and diesel fuel you will still have power from wood, trash, coal or whatever else is available. The exhaust of this engine will also provide 40,000 BTUs of heat, ideal for steam heating your cabin, providing a heat source for the alcohol still described in our junkyard still book, heating hot water for cooking and other uses."

I made this neat water wheel and hooked it up to generator to supply power to our remote retreat. If I can do it, you can too!

If you spend the wheel more buckets it will run much more smooth and with this run, the power will be more continous and much better... The wheels not bad, but this little improvement will make is less noisy and better performing.
