Books: Classics 2 October 08, 2005 1:52 PM

Hello!

I am going through a box of books that I have not read. I do not have much space so I must give some away and decide what to keep.

Please let me know if you have read any of the following and if they are worth reading.

Thanks!
Heidi

Gulliver's Travels and Other Writings- Jonathan Swift

The Crysalids- John Wyndham

The Crucible- Arthur Miller

Joshua Then And Now- Mordecai Richler

The Learned Ladies (Les Femmes Savantes)- Moliere

The White Hotel- D.M. Thomas

Notre Dame of Paris- Allan Temko

The Age of Reason- Jean-Paul Sartre

I have already told you before about how I feel.  I would keep the books.  [ send green star]

Heidi... October 08, 2005 2:14 PM

...as Helen suggested in your last topic, I'd ignore your boss and keep as many of them as possible! Five is a very small number of books to hang on to, so if you can, I'd keep most of them

If you're thinking of passing them on to your kids at some point in the future, I would certainly recommend John Wyndham. I haven't read 'The Crysalids', but his writing is always very good. I've read 'Gulliver's travels', a long time ago, but it's certainly one to hang on to, I think

As for the others, J-P Sartre is always worth reading and 'The Crucible' rings a bell, but I wouldn't know anything about the book. As for the others, they are beyond my ken, so I wouldn't want to pass judgement on any of them. I hope you will be able to keep them, and enrich your future by reading them

Love and hugs,
Derek

Hello!  Like Derek, I've read 'Gulliver's Travels' and enjoyed it.  Swift was a clever writer, in my opinion, and it's a creative story/commentary on society.   You can also find the origin of the words 'lilliputian' and 'yahoo' in those pages.

I've been meaning to read 'The Crucible'.  It's supposed to be very good, although one of my friends thought that it was a bit dull.

Moliere is always fun reading!   It´s at times very absurd, but always satirical! I must admit that I haven`t read that piece of him...

I agree with the others, why give classics away? I am myself buildung my own library and the classics are indispensable members of my library..!!

I love that book. I AM VERY INTERESTED IN THE WITCH TRIALS. I think this book put a real honest look on the trials...Amazing story!  [ send green star]

well.. October 10, 2005 1:25 PM

You all are not making this very easy are you? Everyone likes a different book!

Nuraini, you are correct, it is the translation. I could get the original. I do read French, and I have read Molière in French in school- but this also a translation.

Another idea October 11, 2005 12:16 PM

Me, being the pack rat with books, I would keep them.

Each book has value.

I recently read that the Disabled Vets are looking for books - old and new to use in their libraries across the U.S..  It is for a good cause if you want to know that the books will bring joy or thoughtfulness to many lives, perhaps that will help you part with them.

Since I am in Canada October 11, 2005 12:43 PM

I have been asking around here and there is a books to prisoner program and also a low income woman's carolling group who take books.

I will give locally.

I am anti-packrat! LOL

two to definitely keep October 16, 2005 12:23 PM

Gullivers Travels is a pretty good read, and the Crucible is absolutely fantastic - I recommend that you keep and read them before you decide their ultimate fate!  [ send green star]

I have only read Gulliver of these, and it wasn't bad. It wasn't good either. I want to warn you though, when he came to the island of the scientists, they kill a dog rather horribly

I think you could read it if you have time, but it hasn't influenced my life or thinking in anyway - so if you really want to pick only the best, you can skip this one, I think.

Hugs,
Ket

Schlaftablette, we can definitely have a chit-chat about Scarlet and Black when we've finished  if you like- I'm a little bit further on, so I won't say anything about what happens..
