You Never Can Tell by Ella Wheeler Wilcox

You never can tell when you send a word

   Like an arrow shot from a bow

By an archer blind, be it cruel or kind,

   Just where it may chance to go.

It may pierce the breast of you dearest friend,

   Tipped with its poison or balm

To a stranger's heart in life's great mart

   It may carry its pain or its calm.

You never can tell when you do an act

   Just what the result will be,

But with every deed you are sowing a seed,

   Though the harvest you may not see.

Each kindly act is a acorn dropped

   In God's productive soil;

You may not know, but the tree shall grow

   With shelter for those who toil.

You never can tell what your thoughts will do

   In bringing you hate or love,

For thoughts are things, and their airy wings

   Are swifter than carrier doves.

They follow the law of the universe--

  Each thing must create its kind,

And they speed o'er the track to bring you back

   Whatever went out from your mind.

May you always find your treasure In the blessings that life sends In the beauty of each season, In the company of friends. May each path you choose bring promise Of the things you're dreaming of May your world be filled with peace and joy, Your heart be filled with Love.

Often when we're being tough and strong, we're scared.  It takes a lot of courage to allow ourselves to be vulnerable, to be soft.---Dudley Martineau

My take on the above quote.  We have developed defenses for protection because we have felt the need for protection from the abuses of others, parents on occasion, bosses,  spouses, even strangers.  And in certain situations, our defenses served us well for a time.  However, they have taken their toll.  Hiding behind them for long makes them habitual, and we move farther and farther away from our center, from the person each of us needs and wants to be.

Exposing who we really are invites juidgement, sometimes rejection, oftentimes discounting.  It is a terribly hard risk to take, and the rewards are seldom immediate.  But with time, others respect us for our vulnerability and  begin to imitate our example.  We are served well by our integrity, in due time.

Letting others see who we really are alleviates confusion, theirs and ours.  We no longer need to decide who we should be; we simply are who we are.  Our choices are simplified.  There is only one appropriate choice to every situation--the one that is honest and wholly reflective of who we are at that moment.

"Simplicity, patience, compassion.
These three are your greatest treasures.
Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to the source of being.
Patient with both friends and enemies,
you accord with the way things are.
Compassionate toward yourself,
you reconcile all beings in the world."

People Change Us.....

4 years ago

Some people come into our lives & disappear soon after, like a flash of lightening. Others stay a little while longer & a select few share our life/lives.
Whether they come into our life for a reason, a season or a lifetime, they all touch us in one way or another so much so that even a chance encounter can change our lives for we are never, ever the same, whoever they are ... they all touch our spirit."~

You need only claim the events of your life to make yourself yours.--Florida Scott-Maxwell

My understanding of this quote:

The search is on.  Everyone, everywhere, asks the question at some time.   "Who am I?"  People like ourselves are fortunate enough to have each other.  Our spiritual paths show us the way to self-discovery.  It directs our steps to the celebration of self that is a gift as a direct result of consciously following a spiritual path.  The events of our past may plague us.  But they did contrbute to the fullness we feel today.  And for them, for their involvement in who we have become, we can be grateful.

Claiming ourselves, the good and the bad, is healing.  It is taking responsibility--for where we were and where we are going.  Claiming ourselves makes us the active participants in our lives.  The choices are many and varied.  Not actively participating in life is also a choice.  Passivity mmay have been our dominant choice in years gone by.  But now, today, we are choosing consciously, on our path.  We are choosing action that is healing, and wholeness is the result.

Making myself mine will exhilarate me.  It will give me hope.  It will prepare me for anything to come.  I will know a new joy.

"Sometimes we think that to develop an open heart, to be truly loving and compassionate, means that we need to be passive, to allow others to abuse us, to smile and let anyone do what they want with us. Yet this is not what is meant by compassion. Quite the contrary. Compassion is not at all weak. It is the strength that arises out of seeing the true nature of suffering in the world. Compassion allows us to bear witness to that suffering, whether it is in ourselves or others, without fear; it allows us to name injustice without hesitation, and to act strongly, with all the skill at our disposal. To develop this mind state of compassion...is to learn to live, as the Buddha put it, with sympathy for all living beings, without exception."

Take the World as It is--Charles Swain

Take the world as it is!--with its smiles and its sorrow,

   Its love ane its friendship--its falsehood and truth--

Its schemes that depend on the breath of tomorrow!

   Its hopes which pass by like the dreams of our youth''

Yet, oh! whilst the light of affection may shine,

  The heart in itself hath a fountain of bliss!

In the worst there's some spark of a nature divine,

  And the wisest and best take the world as it is.

Famous Buddhist Quotes & Sayings

  • Neither fire nor wind, birth nor death can erase our good deeds.
  • You only lose what you cling to.
  • Fill your mind with compassion.
  • We live in illusion and the appearance of things. There is a reality. We are that reality. When you understand this, you see that you are nothing, and being nothing, you are everything. That is all.
  • The Four Reliances
    First, rely on the spirit and meaning of the teachings, not on the words;
    Second, rely on the teachings, not on the personality of the teacher;
    Third, rely on real wisdom, not superficial interpretation;
    And fourth, rely on the essence of your pure Wisdom Mind, not on judgmental perceptions.
  • We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make our world.
  • To be idle is a short road to death and to be diligent is a way of life; foolish people are idle, wise people are diligent.
  • Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.
  • Pay no attention to the faults of others,
    things done or left undone by others.
    Consider only what by oneself is done or left undone.
  • What we think, we become.
  • Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one getting burned.
  • Do not overrate what you have received, nor envy others.
  • He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.
  • An insincere and evil friend is more to be feared than a wild beast; a wild beast may wound your body, but an evil friend will wound your mind
  • Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world.
  • Anger will never disappear so long as thoughts of resentment are cherished in the mind. Anger will disappear just as soon as thoughts of resentment are forgotten.
  • Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the mind on the present moment.
  • Words have the power to both destroy and heal. When words are both true and kind, they can change our world.
  • On life's journey Faith is nourishment,
    Virtuous deeds are a shelter,
    Wisdom is the light by day and Right mindfulness is the protection by night.
    If a man lives a pure life nothing can destroy him;
    If he has conquered greed nothing can limit his freedom.
  • One of his students asked Buddha, "Are you the messiah?"
    "No", answered Buddha.
    "Then are you a healer?"
    "No", Buddha replied.
    "Then are you a teacher?" the student persisted.
    "No, I am not a teacher."
    "Then what are you?" asked the student, exasperated.
    "I am awake", Buddha replied.
