for Air Force Brats

| Memory lane

When I was a kid, during holidays, my dad & uncles would put each other down and talk up their own branch.

My aunt Dorthy married an Air Force guy.

So this thread is to tell stories about the Air Force and put down the other branches if you like...all in fun.

There is not much rivalry among branches in Brazil as in the USA, I guess. We're way too poor to afford that. Of course, as everywhere, marines, parachutists, commmandos and pilots think themselves the top of the top. Some rivalry exists however between the Air Force Cadets and the Navy Midshipmen. In the macho culture we live here, where political correctness has not yet found space, future pilots tend to mock the future naval officers as... less manly than required. Of course, now ladies get into academies at growing numbers, but this tradition persists, and got both services in a major brawl when, in athletic competion at Rio, one Air Force cadet wen into the staduim, dressed in a Navy uniform he got God knows where, donning a flower in his mouth, and... ballet slippers, which he used to dance (or quite) some very feminine ballet steps in front of the whole audience. The MPs had some trouble to stop the following mass fisting and kicking among both groups, and the joker only escaped severe punishment because fled in time and was well disguised. The navy middies worked several years to get even on that, but that's another story.

This is a great topic for me! I was in Security Police, now Security Forces, when I met my husband. Dan was also in the Air Force at the time, as a Military Training Instructor (TI). We had always thought Air Force personnel were "sharper" than Army personnel because we had been TDY with alot of Army folks. In our particular career fields we hold guardmount inspections before each shift, so we always looked really sharp. Well, Danny applied for was was accepted into the Army's Warrant Officer Aviation program. He attended flight school at Fort Rucker in Alabama and there I saw first hand how very, very, very different the AF and Army are. If you are enlisted in the Army, be prepared to eat dirt..or do pushups. If you are an officer, oh my gosh, it's like a whole other world! The soldiers pop to with incredible speed and precision when an officer walks in the room! It unnerved us because Dan was so much younger than these E-7's and E-8's that are hurrying over to ask, "How can we help you, Chief?" In the Air Force, we were very professional, but other than basic training, we pretty much treat each individual with decent customer service skills. If an Air Force officer is waited on by an enlisted person, the transaction is polite, but not "sir, yes sir." As a police officer I believe in overusing "Sir and Ma'am." We were very professional in the Air Force, but the Army, whew, they had tighter hair cuts and they truly are hard core about addressing those senior in rank. I guess now that I look at this...I could've posted it in the Army brat section.....mea culpa

I am confused though...

In the Coast Guard and Navy...E-7 & E-8 are Cheifs.  E-7 is Cheif.  E-8 is Senior Chief.

Warren Officer, in the Coast Guard, is what my dad called a "paper pusher".  When he was E-7, he was offered a promotion up to Warren Officer, but turned it down because, as he stated it, he did not want to be a "damn paper pusher".
