New Catholic Worker Group July 01, 2006 11:26 AM

I just started a new Care2 group on the Catholic Worker movement a week ago. For those of you who don't know, this movement, started by Dorothy Day & Peter Maurin, set out to care for the poor and the homeless and to achieve peace, justice, and nonviolence. There are Catholic Worker houses or houses of hospitality all over the country and the world (although we can use many more.) In these houses the homeless and poor can live as guests. I really think West Palm Beach can use one or more Catholic Worker houses. We can use more Catholic Workers in this country if this is going to happen. The URL for my group is http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/CatholicWorker

anonymous homelessness July 16, 2006 8:09 AM

I just want to say that I am finding myself homeless, and am afraid of what my options will be. I am 53 and I suffer from Bipolar and OCD. I am not a Dual Diagnosis, and have already been told that I do not meet the criteria for shelters or half-way houses because there is no substance abuse. Also, if you try to help yourself by applying for SSDI, you are also not eligible.

What are you supposed to do with no income or healthcare? I could work if I had proper medication and a roof over my head. From what I have seen in other areas, assistance to the Mentally Ill is not really a very big priority in the church. In fact, I couldn't even get my priest to assist me in "counseling". It was very discouraging.

Me Too August 05, 2006 10:45 AM

I have some of the same problems you have. I'm 47 years old & have bipolar, OCD, and ADD. I've been homeless & lived in a couple homeless shelters. I also own a care2 group called Homeless Mentally Ill http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/HomelessMentallyIll that you're welcome to check out.
