Welcome to San Antonio Homeless Community Aid!
Do you know of a service or support group that isn't listed in our links section? Is your local business, school, church or community group collecting donations? Do you know of volunteer opportunities working to help our homeless neighbors? Do you an idea on how to help, but weren't sure who to talk to about it? Do you have a story to share?
Please post liberally! We're here to engage in open discussion regarding homelessness and hunger in San Antonio, Bexar County and the surrounding area. Your input is vital to make the group both informative and interractive. So, introduce yourself and then get busy. I'll start.....
...A recent move to the downtown area of SA from the quiet westside suburbs brought the issues of homelessness and hunger into much sharper fous for me. I always knew the problem was there, and made what donations I could to the food locker and other local organizations. However, since ther was no direct impact to my neighborhood or my life, it was easy enough to push to bottom of the daily priorities list. Basically, I would make my donation and think "We really need to find a better long-term solution to the issues of homelessness and hunger in this town....Someday."
Now that I live downtown, I see people daily who are hungry, homeless and exposed to the elements. And I know that many more of my neighbors are only a paycheck or two away from the streets. Afterall, how many people out there live paycheck to paycheck? What happens if that paycheck goes away, due to lay-offs or illness? For me, at least, someday has finally come. I sincerely hope some of you feel the same. And I do believe that a group of committed, dedicated citizens can make a difference.
Thank you for your willingness to help!
~Deb

You can find more care2 members in your area to invite by going to any group on Care2 (whether you are a member or not) and looking in the lower right hand corner where members in that group are from your area.
And many thanks to the new members! Don't forget to drop by this thread and introduce yourself to everyone. (I know you're cute when you're shy, but you'll be even cuter saying hello!)
Thanks Deb for the invite. Right now, I'm having some eye issues but would be interested in knowing what the local SA group is doing to either feed or house its' homeless population. And as soon as my health permits, I will be ready, willing, and able to assist with hands-on in any magnitude in which I can.
Hello and welcome to the group! Sorry to hear about your health issues, but don't worry about missing out on things. We're just getting started here, so there will be plenty more to come, when you're up to it.
I'm going to be out of town on business most of next week and probably won't have the opportunity to post. If things get too quiet around here, feel free to drop in and start a conversation!

to all members of this Group. My name is Patricia and I have a long-time interest the poor and homeless. I hate to use the term "poor," but it's short and simple. Eighteen years ago I was a volunteer at the Catholic Worker House in Dallas. It was a small shelter for the homeless where I cooked and did whatever I could to help the families there. When I moved back here in '89 I thought I would continue to volunteer at the CWH here on Nolan St. Much has changed since then and I do not get there to help because of my medical disability. Nonetheless, I have a continuing interest in the issue of the homeless. I hope I will be able to contribute in some way to this group. Please let me know how.
Thank you Deb for the invite! I am really excited about joining this group.
Hello to everyone- I'm Jamie ( I live on the outskirts of SA in Universal City). I look forward to meeting all of you and doing what I can in helping our communities homeless.
