This article will take your breath away. Tens of thousands of boys passed through the gates of the Dozier School for Boys in Florida between its founding in 1900 and 2011 when it was closed. This is one of the most horrific articles I have ever read and I just had to share it here. If anyone thinks racism is over in America, think again. Don't get me wrong, there were boys of other races at this school, but as usual, non-whites always fair worse in a situation such as this. I am going to attempt to post the whole article here, complete with pictures and videos. I really think this is a story that needs to be told and shared.
In early August, a few weeks before forensic scientists began exhuming dozens of unmarked graves at the Arthur G. Dozier School for Boys, five older black men took a road trip to Marianna, a rural town on the Florida panhandle—historic Klan country—to confront their demons on the reform school’s vast, wooded campus.
Johnny Gaddy, 68, still remembers his first glimpse of the grounds as a child. “This was the most beautiful place you ever seen. They had palm trees in a row. Perfect palm trees,” he says. “It looked so beautiful, but I found out on the black side where began my hell.”
“To go inside of it was...a feeling like you’re there again,” Huntly says. “You’re under the spell of the Florida School for Boys.”
Gaddy’s job was to haul trash to the black side for burial. “One time, I saw a boy’s hand in the garbage, ” he says. “I asked, ‘What's a hand doing in there?’ And a boy said, ‘Don’t ever mention that to nobody, because you can end up like that.’ So I didn't mention it to nobody. I was at the hog pen and I saw a foot in the slop. By that time, I knew not to mention it.”
You may still want to go to the article itself as it seems to have some embedded links that I don't think actually show here.
Also, keep in mind that this hell hole only closed in 2011.
This is just a heartbreaking article. I wonder how many other places like this there are and how many may still be in operation in the backwoods of some state somewhere. I shudder to think.
My God it's a very scary and creepy place indeed . Poor children !!!
A very enlightening article thank you Susan .
Yeah, it totally broke my heart.
