Paul, you must remember that Peter was a Jew and not one time did Peter ever preach being born again by the blood of Christ. He preached the kingdom to the Jews. It was Paul that was chosen and sent to preach salvation to the Gentiles.
When Peter said, "ye are a chosen generation," he also called them a "royal priesthood. In the Jewish culture, the head of each family was the family priest. Peter also further called them "an holy nation." We, the Gentiles are combined with all the nations of the world. We are not just 1 nation as Israel was. Then Peter called that chosen generation a peculiar people.......this was taken from the Old Testament, Deuteronomy 14:2 which says, "For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth."
When we read the Word of God, we must be very careful to always ask.......who is talking?........who are they talking to? We must learn what is meant for us and what is meant for Israel. In the particular verse I quoted this morning, Peter was talking.....he was talking to the Jews, and the message was intended for them, not for the Church. Paul, I'm sorry but I'm not aware of a "chosen generation" lifted out to be the Bride of Christ. I am a member of the Body of Christ, a body built in excess of 2000 years of the Gospel of Salvation. That includes many generations and there are some chosen from each of them. Like we just learned in Matthew 22, "... many are called, but few are chosen."
