Now that must be one of the most SENSIBLE suggestions I have heard in a long time.

The ONLY way to STOP and PREVENT so much un-necessary commercialism is to stop it at its source, by simply NOT BUYING IT.

I would agree that commercialism is rife and out of control.   I am sick and tired of seeing TV adverts which plug countless new products (for example) whilst at the same time knowing that each new product is usually NOT any better than its predessor or a competing product.

Ads make us believe that we NEED to go out and buy - and can even make us feel guilty if we dont (especially when it comes to kids & toys etc)

There is little need (for example) for the vast array of CLEANING PRODUCTS.    A visit to Annies Healthy Living Group is sufficient to convince anyone that a product like `polish` for example can easily be done without, and simple household vingegar is a far more healthy and indeed a cheaper way of doing the job.

The more products there are - the more WASTE there becomes, and waste is an ongoing problem.

Although many might feel that they need a constant stream of new clothes and shoes - in reality you DONT.    The only people who are truly happy that you believe this is the MANUFACTURERS, and SHAREHOLDERS of those companies.

There are probably one or two things which I do believe ought to have been included in the suggestions cited in the article, basically because there are certain other things as well as food, medicine & underwear that we do need.   But keeping buying to an ABSOLUTE MINIMUM  would not only serve to SAVE US MONEY but would help the problem regards waste & how to dispose of waste.   It is through our own power to BOYCOTT COMMERCIALISM that we can take a stand by telling all the GREEDY MANUFACTURERS "hey, we dont need it, so we aint going to buy it"    Sooner or later they will get that message when they are left with useless products that quite simply DO NOT SELL.

The stopping shopping challenge: Could you survive without buying anything?

By BECKY SHEAVES - More by this author » Last updated at 08:51am on 8th May 2007

It's the latest way to save the planet, but could our writer survive for months without buying anything new? Yes, until the ironing board broke, her clothes ripped and - horrors! - her make-up ran out

A new sustainable living experiment has sparked a movement copied around the world. Known as the San Francisco Compact, it requires members to reject consumerism, and re-use, borrow and recycle instead.

They undertake not to buy anything new, ever (except for food, underwear and medicines). So is it possible? We challenged a spendaholic mother to become a Compacter.

Becky Sheaves, 39, who lives in Devon with her husband John, 48, and their six children, describes how her attempt to help save the planet went.

Please add stories and pictures March 08, 2007 9:53 PM

Dear Friends, Members, Guests, for stopping by!

Please add stories about your recipe's and pictures when possible...most famililies have a great story about someone who was famous for their particular dish!

...About the old country...or it was grandma's favourite dish...or now the healthy way to make it is with...and put substitues when applicable.

Do please start a thread of your own..and name it what you like...it will be your own pages in this collection of specialtys.

There are lots of things some people can't eat...(fats or salty things or other health concerns)...maybe the dish can be made with other things.

This is in hopes of encouraging people to try authentic and easy to make foods ...to add a little more spice to life!

again...

I'm very keen on learning new things then it comes to cooking. When I saw this group on my friend's profile I couldn't resist joining it.

It seems it's a new group so I hope all the best is still ahead! (and I didn't miss anything yet).
