Potential Pot Pie And Salmonella Link10 Oct 2007   

American food company ConAgra is advising consumers not to eat Banquet Turkey and Chicken Pot Pies until further notice after being contacted by health officials about a possible link to Salmonella outbreaks affecting nearly 140 people in 30 US states since the start of this year. The products affected are frozen chicken or turkey pot pie products bearing the Banquet brand plus generic store brand not-ready-to-eat pot pie products that have the number "P-9" printed on the side of the package.

The food company believes the Salmonella outbreaks are most likely due to consumers undercooking the products. They said they are cooperating with the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to find the cause of the outbreaks and to take any steps to stop this happening again. One possibility is that the cooking instructions on the packaging are not clear enough, for instance with respect to cooking times for consumers using microwaves of different wattages.

In the meantime consumers should throw the product away, but keep the packaging if they want a refund. To get a refund, consumers should take the whole package back to the store where they bought the goods, or they can cut out and send the side panel that bears the "P-9" code to: ConAgra Foods, Dept. BQPP, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103-0768.

The company said it would like to remind consumers that these products are not ready to eat and should be cooked thoroughly first according to the instructions on the label. For instance if you use a microwave, make sure you know the wattage because cooking times are different for different wattages.

The company said it is already working to make the microwave cooking instructions on the products clearer. Salmonella is killed by cooking food thoroughly.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSI, and public health officials in several states are investigating an outbreak of a particular strain of Salmonella in 139 humans in 30 states across the US. No deaths have been reported and the ages of the people infected range from under 1 year to over 80.

The cases occurred between 1st January and 9th October 2007. The particular bacterial strain involved is Salmonella I,4,[5],12:i:- (pronounced "four five twelve eye minus") and the genetic fingerprint of the bacteria in all cases is identical.

By comparing the foods eaten by people who have been infected with those who have not, health officials found a significant statistical link between the cases and consumption of Banquet brand pot pies produced by the ConAgra Foods company.

According to the CDC, most people infected with Salmonella will have symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pains 12 to 72 hours after ingesting the bacteria. The illness, which is called salmonellosis, lasts between 4 and 7 days and most people recover without treatment. However in some rare cases the infection can become severe. Small babies, the elderly and people whose immune systems are weak are the most vulnerable. The bacteria can spread from the intestines to other parts of the body and patients can die in these cases if not promptly treated with antibiotics.  [report anonymous abuse]

This product may be contaminated with Salmonella, (a bacterium that causes foodborne illness).

Symptoms of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. In persons with poor underlying health or weakened immune systems, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections.

The product was distributed nationwide. Consumers should not consume the recalled product and should discard any product they may have.

The potential for contamination was noted after testing by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that detected the presence of Salmonella in some packages of Baker’s Premium White Chocolate Baking Squares (6 oz.). The company is aggressively investigating the source of the problem.

The potential for contamination was noted after a routine test by Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety Program revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a 12 OZ vacuum pack package of “SOY DELI FIRM ORGANIC NIGARI TOFU”. The company is voluntarily recalling all products produced during the same time period as the sampled product to ensure customer safety.

Metz Fresh Announces Voluntary Recall of Spinach

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Salinas, CA -- August 28, 2007 -- Metz Fresh, LLC is voluntarily recalling bagged spinach as a result of a positive test for Salmonella found during routine company testing.

The spinach is distributed under the label Metz Fresh, in both retail and food service packages. These include 10 and 16 oz bags as well as 4-2.5 lb. and 4 lb. cartons. The only Metz Fresh product affected is spinach that bears the tracking codes 12208114, 12208214 and 12208314. It was distributed in the continental United States and Canada.

There have been no reports of illness or problems related to this spinach.

Salmonella is a common food borne pathogen that can cause severe illnesses, including fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. While most individuals recover in three to five days without medical intervention, the infection can be life-threatening to young children, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. Consumers with any of these symptoms should call their physician.

Consumers are advised to discard this product or return it to the place of purchase for a refund. Consumers with questions about the recall should contact 831-386-1018.

"Nothing is more important to Metz Fresh than the safety of our consumers, period," said Andrew Cumming, President of Metz Fresh. "As soon as we learned of the presumptive positive test, we directed all customers to hold all boxes of the spinach affected as a precaution. Now, with this positive test confirmation, there is no question that we would recall and destroy all spinach bearing these three codes."

The positive test came during independent lab testing Metz Fresh conducts on all of its products. Through its labeling and numbering system, Metz Fresh has already tracked, located and put 'holds' on the vast majority of the cartons of spinach affected. That spinach will not be released into the marketplace.

While the positive test came from only one sample of many on three packing lines, Metz Fresh has, as a precaution, chosen to recall all of the spinach from the ‘field lot’ packed that day on all three lines.

Metz Fresh is keeping appropriate authorities updated on the status of the voluntary recall.

Los Angeles Salad Company Voluntarily Recalls Product Because of Possible Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Industry, CA -- August 22, 2007 -- Los Angeles Salad Company, located in City of Industry, CA is recalling its "Genuine Sweet Baby Carrots" with a Sell By Date Code up to and including August 16, 2007 printed on the back of the packages because the product may be contaminated with the bacteria Shigella. Shigella infection can cause diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, nausea and vomiting. Illness usually lasts from 4 to 14 days. In some persons, especially the very young, the very old and people with compromised immune systems, the diarrhea can be more severe. Infection can occur after eating and drinking food and water that is contaminated with Shigella and can be passed from person to person.

The product was sold in packages with two labels. One is labeled "Los Angeles Salad Genuine Sweet Baby Carrots" distributed by Kroger Co. King Sooper, in Colorado, Kroger Co. Ralphs in California; Publix in Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, South Carolina and Florida. All of these packages were sold in flexible plastic bags in 7 and 8 oz. size with a Sell By Date Code up to and including August 16, 2007. The second label was "Trader Joe's Genuine Sweet Baby Carrots" distributed by Trader Joe's in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon and Washington in 7 oz. flexible plastic bags with a Sell By Date Code up to and including August 8, 2007.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the same product sold in Canada was contaminated with Shigella. There were four reported incidences of illness in Canada from August 4-6, 2007. No one was hospitalized and all persons affected have fully recovered. An ongoing investigation is being conducted to find the cause of the problem, but at this time the source has not been determined.

The products were sold in bulk 5-pound containers to the warehouses.  The dips are then sold in the value added and deli sections of the retail stores in clear plastic containers with a Regal King label.  All flavors have a red and white repack label.  The brand name is Regal King Gourmet Seafood.  The flavors are Premium Krab Dip, Cajun Krab Dip, Shrimp Dip, and Smoked Salmon Dip.

No illnesses have been reported to date.

The recall was the result of an independent systemic sampling program conducted by Ocean King Enterprises Inc. which revealed that one finished product contained the bacteria. The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and Ocean King Enterprises continue their investigation as to what caused the problem.

Lakeside Foods Issues Nationwide Recall of French Style Green Beans

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Manitowoc, WI -- August 1, 2007 -- Lakeside Foods, Inc. of Manitowoc, Wisconsin is initiating a voluntary recall of 15,000 cases of 14.5-ounce French Style Green Beans because some cans may have been under processed and some cans may have leaked. While no illnesses have been reported these cans have the potential to be contaminated with harmful organisms including Clostridium botulinum. No botulinum toxin has been found in any cans tested to date, however the company continues to test out of an abundance of caution. Botulism, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning, can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distention and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing theses problems should seek immediate medical attention. California Department of Public Health Warns Consumers Not to Eat Fresh Ginger From China

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Sacramento, CA -- July 29, 2007 -- Dr. Mark Horton, director of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), today warned consumers not to eat fresh ginger imported from China after the California Department of Pesticide Regulation’s residue monitoring program detected the presence of aldicarb sulfoxide in some batches of imported ginger. Aldicarb sulfoxide is a pesticide that is not approved for use on ginger.

The product is known to have been distributed to Albertson's stores and Save Mart stores in northern California by Christopher Ranch of Gilroy, California.

CDPH and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are tracing the imported ginger from the importer (Modern Trading Inc. in Alhambra, California) to determine the full distribution of the product and to identify other retail stores that may have received the product.

Currently, there are no reports of illness associated with the contaminated ginger.

Consumers who may have purchased this product from Albertson's stores and Save Mart stores in northern California should discard it.

Symptoms of aldicarb poisoning in humans are likely to occur within the first hour following exposure. Ingestion of foods contaminated with aldicarb at low levels can cause flu-like symptoms (nausea, headache, blurred vision) which disappear quickly, usually within 5 or 6 hours. However, at higher levels, ingestion of aldicarb contaminated food can also cause dizziness, salivation, excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle stiffness and twitching, and difficulty in breathing.

Individuals who may have consumed this product and have any of the above symptoms should contact their health care provider immediately.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the product containing almonds was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of nuts. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the producer's packaging processes.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Salinas, CA -- July 24, 2007 -- True Leaf Farms, LLC is contacting its wholesale and retail outlets to request they remove certain batches of spring mix and arugula from store shelves and preparation counters as a precautionary step.

During a series of regular internal tests known as 'test and hold', one of the many samples taken indicated the possible presence of salmonella, a human pathogen that may pose a potential health risk. To exert the utmost caution, all cases of spring mix and arugula produced between July 19 and July 25, 2007 are being withdrawn. There have been no reports of illness or problems connected to this product.

"There simply can be nothing more important than consumer safety,' said Jared Gill, Plant Manager of True Leaf Farms. "Withdrawing all of the product, and not just the one lot found with a potential problem is simply the right thing to do. It is essential we do all we can to protect our consumers."

Appropriate authorities have been informed and consulted about the precautionary withdrawal and are being kept updated on developments.

Church Brothers Produce, which handles the sales and marketing for True Leaf Farms, is contacting directly all outlets who are known to have received shipments of the finished product from the affected dates.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Augusta, Georgia -- July 18, 2007 – Castleberry's Food Company today announced that it is voluntarily recalling the following products: Castleberry's Hot Dog Chili Sauce, 10 oz can (UPC 3030000101), Austex Hot Dog Chili Sauce, 10 oz can (UPC 3030099533), Kroger Hot Dog Chili Sauce, 10 oz can (UPC 1111083942), Morton House Corned Beef Hash, 15 oz can (UPC 7526665830), Cattle Drive Chili with Beans, 15 oz can (UPC 3030001515), Southern Home Corned Beef Hash, 15 oz can (UPC 0788015360), Meijer Corned Beef Hash, 15 oz can (UPC 4125095229), Castleberry's Chili with Beans, 15 oz can (UPC 3030001015), Castleberry's Barbecue Pork, 10 oz can (UPC 3030000402) and Bunker Hill Chili No Beans, 10 oz can (UPC 7526604112).

Castleberry's is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to investigate possible contamination of these products with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium which can cause botulism, a life-threatening illness. Botulism can cause the following symptoms: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision and trouble with speaking or swallowing. Difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation may also be common symptoms. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.

This recall only affects the products listed above with a "best by" date of APR30 2009 through MAY22 2009. The "best by" date can be found either on the top or bottom of the can. Consumers who have any of these products should discard them. Consumers should not use these products even if they do not look or smell spoiled. Consumers may return the label to the location where the product was purchased for a full refund.

Castleberry's was notified by the FDA of four potential cases of botulism involving individuals who ate these products. "We are taking this precautionary measure to ensure the safety of our consumers," said Steve Mavity, SVP Technical Services/Quality Assurance for Castleberry's. "We will continue to work closely with the FDA, USDA, and CDC."

FDA Urgently Warns Consumers about Health Risks of Potentially Contaminated Olives

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is alerting consumers to possible serious health risks from eating olives that may be contaminated with a deadly bacterium, Clostridium botulinum. C. botulinum can cause botulism, a potentially fatal illness. The olives are made by Charlie Brown di Rutigliano & Figli S.r.l, of Bari, Italy and are being recalled by the manufacturer. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this recall.

The olives should not be eaten alone or in other foods, even if they do not appear to be spoiled. Consumers should discard these products or return them to the point of purchase. If in doubt, consumers should contact the retailer and inquire whether its olives are part of the recall.

The olives are sold under the following brands: Borrelli, Bonta di Puglia, Cento, Corrado's, Dal Raccolto, Flora, Roland and Vantia, and have codes that start with the letter "G" and are followed by 3 or 4 digits. All sizes of cans, glass jars and pouches of Cerignola, Nocerella and Castelvetrano type olives are affected.

Symptoms of botulism include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, trouble with speaking or swallowing, difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation. People experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention. Consumers may also report illnesses associated with consumption of these olives to the nearest FDA district offices.

Charlie Brown di Rutigliano & Figli S.r.l, initiated a recall of these olives on March 27, 2007. The recalled olives had been distributed to wholesalers, who have marketed them nationally to restaurants and retail stores. FDA concluded that additional warnings are needed because, to date, the company has not contacted importers with specific instructions on the recall.

In addition to re-emphasizing its warning to consumers, FDA is making the following requests:

  • Importers of these olives should discontinue distribution, isolate held stocks and notify customers to take similar actions to prevent the products from reaching consumers. Importers should contact their local FDA office for assistance in implementing the recall.
  • Food manufacturers who have repacked the olives for sale under different names or who have used them in the production of other food should contact their local FDA office.
  • Restaurants, delicatessens, and other food service providers should discontinue using the olives, dispose of their opened containers and contact their suppliers for instructions on what to do with unopened containers.
