beaded belt January 07, 2005 12:08 AM

Hey everyone.... I have an idea to make a beaded belt....only I don't know how! lol I'm wanting to create a multi strand belt with some bigger "seed bead" type beads with a gemstone donut as the buckle, then have some stands dangle off the donut with focal beads on the ends of the dangle. At this point undecided about trying to stitch the strands together or just join them with multi-strand spacers every so often. I was hoping someone could suggest a type of stringing material, and a type of bead that would be good for this? And any other thoughts about this! I am very new to beading so any thoughts are wonderful:) Thanx and glad to see it picking up around here!! ;) I just finished my first project tonight, so hopefully I will know more about contributing soon.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi Donna! What a neat idea, i'm picturing sort of a Lariet type of design for the belt. Is that what you were Thinking? As for stringing materials....hmmm....maybe a thin macreme cord? i've seen plenty of belts made out of that, although you'd have to use larger sized seed beads. Depending on the thickness of the cord, you could probably use size 6 seed beads. You could also use strands of silk (if your not opposed to using silk). i've seen some really beautiful beadwork done on dyed silk cord. It would also give it a nice flow and movement. Silk deteriorates over time if you wear it regularly not sure how long it would last you. Accuflex beading wire would be much more stable and you could use it with smaller beads...but it would probably be stiff and not really flow the way a belt should. i do like the idea of loose strands connected by spacers every now and again. i think it would look really great! i've never done anything like take my suggestions with a grain of salt! i would love to hear what other folks would use. silk? January 08, 2005 9:19 PM

Hey Tree…..thanx for the suggestions….yes a lariat type style only modified to come apart for threading through belt loops! Thinking of the donut with a toggle on the other end, then looping the dangles on the donut as well….sound like a plan? I think I will go with the silk and hope I don’t regret it. How often would you suggest a re-string or just inspect and string when needed? Also, is there another reason for not using the silk that I’m not aware of? BTW I also checked out your web sight. The full moon goddess was my fav. but loved it all!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Thanks Donna! i really like that full moon goddess too, its never drawn a whole lot of inquires though..which i've never really understood. i'm sometimes really suprised by what sells and what doesn't. The only other problem with silk that i was thinking, is just the ethical issues if your vegan. i know alot of folks on CAre2 are vegan, and won't use it. Other than that, it sound like a good plan! i would love to see the belt when it's finished! i think you just need to pay attention to it, and occasionally check for wear or stress. i'm really not sure how quickly it will wear, it's just one of the things i've always heard about it. Happy Beading!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
silk worms January 09, 2005 1:38 PM I found this interesting article on the production of now I am back to thinking. I had always assumed that the life cycle completed...then the silk was spun...that is what they say about assume!!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Did you ever get your belt finished? What did you end up using? How'd it turn out? Many Blessings, ~tree  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

hey Tree... Thanx for the inquiry....not finished;) With so many choices I am still doing some shopping. Have settled on some red coral rice beeds and black rice beeds of unknown material (undecided). Wanted something a little larger than the seeds. As for stringing???? My focal beeds come from New Orleans Mardi Gras last year. They are plastic faces with the masks hand painted. This description does not give a good visual at all ;)  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
