End "No-Camping" Law in Beverly Hills,CA.

I was a minor player in the movie "Mayor of the Sunset Strip". I only got a
little money from that...and my entertaining career stalled.

I have no bad habits, but had bad luck...and no family. But California was much
better than the ugliness of Houston,Texas...so I came here.

Beverly Hills,with its safe streets,and no shelters (I don't like them,I only
support Food,Not Bombs) for a while, was a place one could take naps in the
park,with minimum belongings.

But as of May 12,the city's trying to drive us all out...and erected first-time-ever signs of "rules and regulations".

Somebody needs to mount a legal challenge to thie erosion of Constitional
rights. There ARE homeless in Beverly Hills, after all! And they are being
scapegoated...because of others who are no longer here.

I note that the Supreme Court/ACLU has managed to overturn several American
states/cities' "no-camping" ordinances.

Talk the talk, walk the walk, and even
Be the be, but, if you don't vote the vote,
You won't ever be livin' in a democracy!

Thanx

While feeling sacred on
This All Hallow's Day,
I also feel pangs of the
Hungry, so wrought by
The profane; for the food
Wasted by us could feed
All the world's. Yet,
Betwixt, in the mundane,
It's only hurled.

Sword that cuts all ways,
Without, for, there's no cutting;
And a pointless point.

I don't suffer, or, suffer from,
Eurocentrism, northern malaise,

Injustices

Addressing, not addressing them have costs,
the former is individual, the later is global, as well.

ends or means

Neither do I embrace.
Rather, the struggle well run,
Which uplifts us uncrowned,
Every moment humans race!

Responsibility

If you don't exercise it,
Its Siamese twin sister, freedom,
Will wither, like a muscle, as well.

if

One lived as prayer,
Their light adding
To the well of light,
Their every step in grace;
Leaving no footprints,
That will echo always.

why

As acid rain from your closed eye,
An acre of rainforest falls each
Second, and the earth's tears bleed;
For, all you see is grey.

grace

Feeling with your spirits hands,
See with the eye of your heart,
Hear with the ear of your soul,
And know with the body
Of life's knowledge,
We can be prayer;
Being forever answered.

Tone

Life's signs and meanings
Perceived by all our senses and
Being's foci of attention, can
Divine from within and without.
That's if our inner-eye
Isn't clouded by false-ego,
Self-conscious self, or doubt.

Cityscape

Hustled and bustled,
Still, hands only put to heart,
Beings, only art.

Artist

Their innerselves, stretched canvasses
On that frameless frame, the world.
They being painted by life itself,
With reality as the brush.
The painting ever evolving,
The frame continually changing,
Their beingness as gleaned meanings
For all to share; seen through...,
If they were there.

Hi everyone I'm Kendra, and I was told about this group by Marie M. Praise God I have never been homeless, but my family has been faced with the prospect several times before. I no longer live at home, but my mom and my brothers are constantly faced with the prospect of eviction and homelessness due to outrageously high rent payments.
We never had much when I was growing up, by my mom raised us to have a sense of respect and caring for anyone with less than us. We spent a lot of time helping at homeless shelters when I was young, and my mom never fails to give things to homeless people when she sees them. It's not always money, but she will do things like giving a homeless woman warm clothes in the winter, and buying meals for homeless people. My family and I will be helping serve a good Thanksgiving meal at a local homeless shelter this year. I am encouraged to see that amidst all the callousness and lack of caring in the world, there are people like me that care about the welfare of others!

Hey Harmony!  I've been gone 6-7 months dealing with health issues; trying to find a balance that will allow me to continue working at least part-time and have some quality of life.

I'm working for a very small, local organization called People Helping People, with adults with disabilities & love my job!  You can check out PHP at www.phpnw.org and if you're familiar with www.twitter.com you can also check out my daily mini-posts there as PeepsHelpPeeps.

I also wanted to remind you of my group, Oregon Homeless Community Aid http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/OregonHCA

Since I've been back on Care2, I've been updating the group and hope that some of the people here will swing by and check it out!  It's a regional group, but I try to post some artlcles relevant to wider audiences as well.

Many blessings!

It's very good to see you here- and it looks like much-needed civil rights work is being done in Maine. Please feel absolutely welcome and invited to start a thread for this, ok? We'll blue-pin it - that is, make sure that it will stay in a list near the top of the discussion list- so that it won't get lost in other postings.

I am suing the state of Maine for bad application of law.

I am a homeless, poverty, civil rights advocate. Self taught at law.  The right to have the town present the law in the fashion in which lawmakers intended, is a valuable human right. Its the right to fair treament under the law.

This case will be before the Boston 1st Cir. Court of Appeal before May is over. Seeing as my job is to help people locate new housing, when town welfare cites twisted laws and refuses to aid those who qualifies, my work is made harder.

The government lacks any legitimate reason to make the work of my non-profit, or the effectiveness of any social service type worker, harder.  But that does not stop the COURT from claiming Government has the right to waste citizens time.

I believe its time for the USA to have a new Civil Rights movement. If only 1% of all people harmed filed legal actions, and groups such as Hospitality House Inc. raised awareness of the fact the Courts needs more judges, and clearer Rules of courts to streamline effectiveness.

Only difficulty is the "strict interrpution of the consitution,"  by republican constitutionalist believe no law after our fore fathers time shpould be enforced. They stop short of saying all legal briefs should be writing in quills.  Because computers makes cases pass quicker.

They are of the mind a clear desk, or  a clear docket is next to godliness. So to keep dockets to a minimum judges eject valid cases, before trial.  They need more judges to accomplish the same amount of Justice as back in the 1960's

I am a homeless, poverty, civil rights advocate. Self taught at law.  The right to decide which city or state one will reside in is a human right.

One does not need to be a lawyer, to know the police threatening this guy if he is "Detained" again, he will be forced out of state - violates his right to travel, or in his case, to not travel.

This right was upheld  by the US Supreme Court in 1969 in a state welfare case a 17 year old Vivian came back to Conn from Mass and was told she must wait 1 year for aid. The case is called Thompson vs. Shapiro If you are a lawyer I am sure westlaw-or lexus nexus will provide you a cite.

I believe its time for the USA to have a new Civil Rights movement. That means a case against the police should be filed, to protect this guy.

Only difficulty is the "strict interrpution of the consitution,"  by republican constitutionalist believe no law after our fore fathers time shpould be enforced. They stop short of saying all legal briefs should be writing in quills.  Because computers makes cases pass quicker.

Hi.  I am a new member and also an attorney.

I am wondering if there are any attorneys out there that might be able to help?  I received a call from a gentleman who resides in a motor home in Hollywood,CA.  Apparently he has been hassled more and more as Hollywood seems to be attempting to rid itself of the homeless.  One day while he was parked in front of a bank he was arrested for robbery---the police claimed that he was seen staking out the bank.  The bail was 100,000 -- and his parents mortgaged the home to get him out.  He was eventually released, but received a letter advising him that he had never been arrested, but rather merely detained!   He is now getting threats from the police that if he doesn't want this to happen again that he needs to move out of the city or state?

Anybody have any experience with this type of case?

Re: [Homeless Civil Rights and Civil Liberties] Welcome! Please introduce yourself here! :-)

Thank you. My girlfriend and I will retire soon and the houseboat was originally intended to be our retirement home. When word got out that it would produce all of the energy and food that we needed people began to take an interest. I started a website groups.yahoo.com/group/riverats/ to get the plans out to anyone that is interested. We start construction in a few weeks and I will post pictures of the progress. So far it looks like we will be building three homestead rafts this summer but we could build a hundred if we had the materials and workers. Each homestead raft could be used as a factory to build more homestead rafts so in a very short time they could end poverty and homelessness while reducing our dependence on dirty carbon fuels. The designs are simple, easy to build with hand tools and the rafts are as safe as being on dry land. I do not have any plans drawn up as the basic design already in common use is sturdy, reliable and cheap. There are pictures of the construction techniques in the photo section of the website. On Mar 30, 2008, at 2:19 PM, Care2 Groups: Homeless Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Mailing List wrote: Homeless Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Jerry, Welcome! 1:18 PM And what a fantastic idea to have a floating factory for people to build their own houseboats! Hi, I am Jerry and I am working on building a floating factory that will enable homeless people build their own houseboat and permanent job on the Mississippi river near Rock Island Illinois. Right now I am concentrating on homeless veterans but civilians are more than welcome to join us. The houseboats will be built on plastic and steel barrels and will have undershot water wheels to produce free, clean and reliable 24/7 energy from the river. The job will be to build rafts and docks that will enable people along the river to get off the grid. The rafts will have gardens on the roof and the river will provide fish to reduce the need to buy processed food. I have enough tools to keep 100 people employed and off the streets and the system should be self sufficient within a year. Jerry.

I wrote an introductory post before I noticed this thread. I was just so excited to find a group like this!

I'm writing this from the offices of Real Change, Seattle's street newspaper. We publish information about homelessness and poverty and other social justice issues, and our paper is sold on the street by homeless and low-income vendors for an immediate income with dignity. We also do cross-class community organizing for the social changes it will take to end the epidemic of homelessness.

Our current campaign is to stop Seattle's latest effort to make homelessness go away by criminalizing homeless people. With far more people homeless than there are shelter spaces for them, many people "sleep rough" outside. Like many cities, Seattle is actively chasing people out of such encampments, confiscating and destroying their meager possessions, and now proposes a new policy that will let any city official issue an "illegal camper" an order trespassing them from all city property.

Besides working with Real Change, I also work with SHARE and WHEEL, organizing efforts of, for, and by homeless and formerly homeless people, ourselves.

I hope to talk with all of you more, over time.

Write On!

Hi everyone,

It was a easy transition because at the shelter we had our own room, the three of us, which had a bathroom. Like having our own little studio apartment without a kitchen.

Yes, I think post traumatic stress disorder comes with being homeless. When I came to the shelter I was scared of everyone, I didn't trust anyone and I was ashamed of being in that situation. I hadn't taken a bath in over two weeks and I was depressed and crying.

We left our dog Zeus in the care of the orange orchard owner who found someone to take care of him for us for a month but the day after he took him there he got loose and to this day we don't know where he is. My son's say that they saw him at the river with a lady in a truck so I'm praying that he is happy and has a good home. A friend of my son gave Zeus to us when he was just weened and we had him for a little over 5 years. I miss him very much.

We were also homeless in 2005 which is a different story for another time. A rough 5 months on the street. I don't like the fact that we were homeless, I'm not proud of it but I'm not taking the same things for granted anymore. I truly believe that there was a reason for us being homeless, a lesson we needed to learn and from this lesson I can help other homeless people.

A very warm welcome to Wolfweeps! :-)

And welcome to the group! I'm hoping you'll feel absolutely free to share what it was like for you "out there" in homelessness. Just so you'll know, I've been homeless myself, twice, for over a year, about 8 years ago. Some of my experiences are still fresh in my head, but I've now had 8 years with a roof over my head. You've now been in a place (thank heavens!!) with your son for about 3 months. How is that like, having it again? For me, I couldn't get over the fact that I now had keys again- keys which would open and close doors, and privacy- and a place nearby where I could shower whenever I wanted to. Such luxury! Re-adjustment back into society may go differently for you- it's different for everyone- but when I first got a place over my head again, I found myself viewing potential friends and neighbors with a sense of misgiving and distrust and skepticism. That is, having had so many people in "society" not look at me as a human being while I was homeless, and not help, and judge me, there was a part of me that would wonder how each friend would treat me were I to become homeless again. Eventually, time healed many issues- but there was definitely a sort of "shell shock" and post traumatic stress disorder from the experience. And personally, I think most homeless people have a traumatic stress disorder going on. There's nothing "post" about it, because it's going on all the time, now, in the present.. .. But I'm rambling on. I hope I'm not putting you off with all this! I am SO VERY GLAD that you and your son were able to get the help you needed to get back into a place! What a blessing!

Thank you Betina for the warm welcome. Homelessness is very dear to my heart because my son's and I have just recovered form being homeless. We've been living at this residence for approximately 3 months. Before we came here we lived in a Christian shelter called Hope for Tomorrow for about 6 months. Before we came to the shelter we lived in a tent in an orange orchard, the owner of the orchard put my son's to work picking oranges and found Hope for Tomorrow for us, I believe he is an angel sent from God. The Christan shelter and the owner is the best thing that ever happened to us, they helped in so many ways, I'm very grateful to them. Before we left I had a job, my son had a job and we had accumulated enough money for a Van, deposit and rent for this apartment. I am so happy!

With homelessness comes depression and selflessness. Just a hug and a kind word does more than you will ever know. Please take the time and talk to a homeless person, maybe buy them a meal it is greatly appreciated, but be careful some homeless people are running from the police and/or addicted to drugs and maybe violent.
