Discuss: The war is not over with gay marriage rights June 14, 2006 4:49 PM

My partner and I attended a wedding ceremony a few days ago on the top of a beautiful mountain. Our friends (both bi) looked like a typical heterosexual couple, and for the sake of the bride's family comfort they had a Christian ceremony even though they are not Christian. Anyway, the priest went on and on about how marriage is a union of a man and a woman, male and female, he and she, Adam and Eve aaarrghh! Most of our friends were really uncomfortable, I started looking at my feet, others started backing away, at a certain point the groom turned to the preacher with an inquisitive expression on his face and said "What??!", but continued repeating the preacher's words like he was 'supposed to'. Later, my partner asked the priest his opinion on gay marriage, and he said that he wouldn't marry a queer couple (or at least two people of same gender). But he also said that he wouldn't oppose it if it were legal, or if a neighboring church consented it. Also he said that he feel that the term had been 'stolen' from the religious nature and turned to a more laic one. In his opinion the term 'marriage' is a religious union of a male and female in a couple. "Civil Union" is in his opinion what people should pursue if they want to be 'married' without the authority of a church or for queer couples.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I hear YA! June 24, 2006 9:28 AM

The preacher has the same hateful and bigoted agenda as every other Christian. He says he would observe it if it were legal, but I'd guarantee you that he would be one of the people to vote AGAINST gay marriage. The problem that we have with marriage is due to the 'SPECIAL' rights that the religioius enjoy here. And while the state claims that marriage is a purely secular institution, the christian community wants to have it BOTH ways: They want the right to have the state make opinions on 'marriage' that they then claim is a RELIGIOUS institution, and this is CLEARLY unconstitutional. Soon there will be a day when children learn that gay marriage was lillegal in these times and they'll say: Dad, mom, I cannot believe that there were people trying to stop gay people from getting married! How could they be able to do that in a 'Free' country?" I don't think there is another SINGLE issue that enrages me more than this issue. If ANYTHING should be banned, it should be marriage that is DISCRIMINATORY! These fanatical Christians make me want to VOMIT -- and they would make JESUS Vomit TOO!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
