I'm proud to be a part of this group.  I own a pit mix & it hurts me to know that this breed is so misunderstood.  This breed, greyhounds, & mutts have a special place in my heart because they seem to have the saddest stories.  I signed all the petitions & checked out the sites--wonderful!!!  Thank you very much!!!

for all these links to the petitions, I somehow had missed quite a few of them!! I also wanted to add that Bad Rap (http://www.badrap.org/rescue/index.cfm) is an amazing site and group, with wonderful information on Pitbulls and the 'bad rap' they receive. Also, they have adorable dog and human clothing with slogans like 'I'm a lover"... too cute. The American Dog Owners Association (http://www.adoa.org/) is another great website/group you can join, which sends you tons of pamphlets and information, much of it based on the breed specific legislation and how we can fight it. And lastly, if you have time, you should visit the Pet-Abuse website (http://www.pet-abuse.com/), while they don't have petitions to sign, they list all the current pet abuse cases going on in each state, and the addresses of judges/prosecturs so that we can send them letters asking for severe punishment.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I live in the affected area, and I read about it on a message board several weeks before the media covered the "corn contamination" problem here.

If people were made ill, there would be lawyers everywhere wanting to help.

Summary of Petition:
 
According to the veterinarian who euthanized Mooie, she was burned over nearly 98% of her body possibly using muriatic acid, an acid used to clean concrete, and used for meth-amphetamine production. The puppy was even forced to drink the acid, burning the inside of her mouth.

Text of Petition:
 
We are writing on behalf of Mooie, the four-month-old Federal Way, WA puppy that was so badly burned by acid that she had to be humanly euthanized by the Veterinarians of Valley Animal Hospital in Auburn, WA.
 
Although intentional animal cruelty is a Felony in Washington State, according to Pasado Safe Haven's sources (a Monroe, Washington-based animal welfare agency), King County Animal Control and the Federal Way Police Department cremated the body of the tortured puppy before a necropsy (animal autopsy) or toxicology tests could be conducted. Why did the law enforcement responsible for investigating such a horrible crime threw away the evidence? Surely you know full-well that information gleaned from necropsy and toxicology reports are the corner-stone of any prosecutor’s case against a perpetrator? When a Vet Clinic regrets ever having turned over an animal's body to the "proper authorities", is it time to question the authorities' ability to do its job?
 
In the past three years there have been three animal cruelty laws passed in Washington State. What good are the laws if the investigators, paid to do their job, choose not to use them?
 
Why shouldn't we expect a professional and appropriate protocol for handling physical evidence in animal cruelty cases? Would authorities discard such evidence in a human-related case?
 
Does King County Animal Control and the Federal Way Police Department want the person capable of such a hideous act of cruelty freely roaming the streets of our cities and towns among our pets and children?
 
The authorities of our court systems have taken an oath of "protecting all God's creatures" and we have the greatest confidence that the law will be set straight for this sweet little dog who suffered so much.

I'm part of this program in a 25 mile radius that had over 100 feral cats.About 4 years ago we did this with 162 feral cats and it
was a miracle before our eyes in less than a year.We have the typical 4/5 left in our area that we all take care of & not one of us has seen one litter
in at least 3 years.We look and I'm sure there have been a few hiding but this "works" and is very easy to do. We actually ended up finding homes for many of the "feral" cats.
All it took was some time & love but we still need to Trap/Neuter/Release.(PLEASE SIGN...!!)

Even tho Mercy's cold-hearted killer has been found; it's more important now than ever to please sign and crosspost this petition-so the Prosecuter and all those involved with this case on the "legal end" will know that the public insists on the penalty fitting the crime when it comes to such horrendous acts of animal torture, abuse and neglect.

Mercy suffered horribly at the hands of a man. A man who deserves to be punished to the fullest extent of the law...our laws against abuse such as this needs to be tougher, and this case could very well be one that sets a precedent to this end; if enough people speak up.

Let's get some justice for Mercy-she was innocent, and paid the ultimate price for that innocence because she was "just a dog"-Let's not let her painful torture and death be in vain.

Please sign-in memory of Mercy..in memory of all those abused and killed before her (and all those who will be after her) and then send this far and wide so that maybe, just maybe; when the abusers realize they'll no longer get a small "slap on the wrist"-they might think twice.

No Breed Specific Legislation in Illinois   

   We, the undersigned, would like to see Breed Specific Legislation not become part of Illinois Law.  Instead we urge the Illinois Senate to pass HR1026 and HJR101.
   HR1026 encourages individual municipalities not to enact breed specific legislation, but to target irresponsible dog owners with tougher laws that are enforced and to encourage programs that educate residents.
   HJR101 establishes a task force comprised of 17 members, including representatives from the veterinary community, animal control, a not-for-profit humane society, the American Kennel Club and an animal behaviorist.  The purpose of this task force being to evaluate and make recommendations on how to best protect the public from attacks.
   It is our fervent wish that these bills are passed and enforced.

The city of DeSoto, Texas (a subdivision of Dallas) is attempting to ban all American Pit Bull terriers on December 7th, 2006. This petition is an attempt to stop this act, before it happens. They have been talking of limiting the number of
"Dangerous dogs" a person can own in Indiana. The News has stated that
they were trying to limit the number to two dogs per person and they
had to be indoors! But by definition, a "dangerous dog" could be your grandmother's poodle!!

 We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens of the City of Indianapolis and neighboring cities. While recognizing the concerns of  Indianapolis residents, we are extremely alarmed regarding the pit bull (dangerous dogs) ordinances that are being proposed, which would have a negative impact on responsible, law-abiding dog owners. These ordinances would have an impact on not only Indianapolis citizens, but also those who choose to visit Indianapolis to show their dogs in legal events, to do business in the community, or to visit family and friends. Following are listed our specific concerns.

(1) Available data indicates that a dog of ANY breed (regardless of size) can bite/ and or cause fatalities. Studies published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association conclude that there is NO reliable data identifying biting dogs by breed.
As well, the American Temperament Test Society has available results of dogs tested by them. As of December 2002, the following results were found:

American Pit Bull Terrier (405) [83.2%]
American Staffordshire Terrier (437) [82.6%]
Golden Retriever (612) [82.5%]
Labrador Retriever (597) [90.6%]
Shetland Sheepdog (426) [66.2%]
Collie (722) [78.8%]
This can be verified with the A.T.T.S. by calling them at (314)869-6103 or on the web at www.atts.org.

(2) The term “pitbull” is not a breed nor is it recognized by reputible breed organizations or kennel clubs. Pitbull is a variety of breed that describes American Pit Bull Terriers and mixes, American Staffordshire Terriers and mixes, and Staffordshire Terriers and mixes, and is often mistakenly used to describe other similar breeds (such as bull terriers and American bulldogs). It is very difficult or impossible to tell these breeds apart and, as a result, it is impossible to fairly enforce the proposed ordinaces.

(3) Cities that have tried to solve their dangerous dog problem by restricting or banning breeds have discovered that such laws do not work. Recently, Cincinnati, OH has repealed its ban on specific breeds and Baltimore, MD has removed all breed specific references from its ordinance, and PA prohibits any BSL.


(4) There is no reliable method by which to scientifically determine the breed of a dog. It is impossible to determine whether a mixed breed dog is 50% of any particular breed. To require the owner of a mixed breed dog to prove that the dog is NOT 50% of a targeted breed places an impossible burden on that citizen. The question of constitutionality comes into play here.

(5) The majority of the owners of targeted breeds are responsible, law-abiding citizens. The proposed ordinances unfairly brand these people as unreliable and irresponsible, solely because they own a targeted breed. Again, there is a question regarding the rights of citizens in regard to personal property. Additionally, we belive the irresponsible owners that are the real source of breed related concern will not be affected, as they will continue to own the dogs illegally or will create other, more dangerous breeds.

(6) It is the consensus of knowledgeable dog experts (as reported in the JAVMA article, "A Community Solution to the Dog Bite Problem") that targeting the owners and the specific dangerous dog, not breeds of dogs, is the key to addressing the dog bite and "dangerous dog" problems.

(7) It takes a large amount of funding for these ordinance provisions requiring the training, testing, and property examination. Passing laws that cannot be enforced increases citizen cynicism regarding effective government.

(8) This proposal is an obvious camouflage form of breed specific legislation, targeting larger breeds of dogs. While not specifically stated, it's primary function is to limit larger breeds, including, but not limited to, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Shepherds, Boxers, Huskies, Malamutes, Great Danes, Mastiffs, Cane Corsos, etc.

(9) Inadvertently this proposal will remove responsibility of dog owners and place it solely on the animal, thus causing irresponsible ownership to run amok in the city of Indianapolis. This will only create more problems and less solutions. "Laws that restrict the ownership of certain breeds of dogs but fail to address the actions of their owners are likely to be ineffective in reducing the number of fatal dog attacks, according to a study by federal health officials published in the current issue of the journal Pediatrics." (The Washington Post, June 11, 1996)

In summary, the proposed ordinances are unfair, costly to taxpayers to enforce, time consuming to enforcement agents, and unnecessary. We urge you to veto this ordinance.  [ send green star]

Imagine being able to sterilize your dog or cat without surgery or anesthesia, but with a simple injection.

While a sterilization injection is not available yet, it will be. WHEN is a matter of how much the public pressures pharmaceutical companies, scientists, regulators and funders into developing the right tools.

While many U.S. pet owners are able to afford and access spay/neuter surgery, it's often a different story for low-income pet owners and rural residents. Surgical sterilization is also logistically difficult and expensive for population control of un-owned animals, such as shelter animals and feral cats. An estimated five million cats and dogs die each year in US shelters alone.

The situation is even more desperate in many other countries where geographic, economic and cultural barriers prevent widespread use of sterilization to control dog and cat populations. Suffering is often greatest in these communities.

Much of this tragedy could be prevented by the development of new non-surgical tools which will facilitate population control as well as providing health and behavioral benefits to the animals receiving them. Introduced by Rep. Michael Tryon on December 1st, 2005, HB4213 automatically deems American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, "pit bulls," Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers and Staffordshire Terriers vicious and requires owners of these and other dangerous dogs to maintain liability insurance . As AKC reported last month, the bill further restricts the regulations for keeping these dogs, including requiring them to be muzzled and leashed whenever outside their owners' residence, even in a fenced back-yard. Fines for violations will increase to a minimum of $1001.
Please sign and help keep bsl out of Illinois! Let them know that PitBulls and the named dogs above are not VICIOUS DOGS! Let them know that we SHOULDNT have to muzzle our family pets just to walk to the sidewalk! Let them know that RACIAL PROFILING IS WRONG!

Breed Specific Legislation heightens human risk of rabies exposure! November 15, 2006 1:01 PM

Please ask the Animal Health Inspection Service, an agency of the Department of Homeland Security, to acknowledge and report that citizens are at a heightened risk for exposure to rabies in areas where Breed Specific Legislation exists, and to urge local governments to reverse all existing bans on pit bulls. As long as local governments have the authority to implement breed bans and outlaw companion animals, the potential for large-scale disease outbreaks such as rabies remains an unrealized threat to public safety. Local governments cannot be allowed to impose such un-American laws such as breed specific banning of  companion animals.

No to Breed Specific Legislation in N.S.W November 15, 2006 1:02 PM

Dear Mr Iemma

In October 2005, the government of New South Wales pushed through Breed Specific Legislation laws targetting innocent dog owners and their beloved pets, these laws were finalised in April 2006 and the Breed Specific Discrimination has begun.  These laws have taken the joy out of having a beloved companion animal, these laws deprive a dog of human interaction and socialistion, and the amount of stress and unhappiness caused to innocent families who have done nothing wrong is phenomenal. 

Breed Specific Legislation DOES NOT WORK.  These laws do nothing to stop irresponsible dog ownership and they do not stop or decrease the number of dog attacks in New South Wales or in any place.

We the undersigned citizens, ask that Breed Specific Legislation in New South Wales be overturned, and ask for new laws to be placed and educational programs be started to address the increasing problems of dog attacks.  We ask that the New South Wales government recognise the problem is not with any specific breed of dog, as ALL breeds are capable of attacking and causing damage, and implement laws that do not harm innocent people and families and their beloved pets.
