Hi William! September 19, 2006 1:35 PM

I just signed. I am happy that you brought this to our attention. PETA should be ashamed of themselves.

Thanks, Lena! It's a shame that PETA has gone so far off course.  [ send green star]

I truly am so tired of people who have taken the liberty of berating and insulting a man who spoke up for animals that have , themselves, been unjustly ridiculed . In his own exhuberant way, he taught us tolerance. I think PETA , as well as people as a whole, could learn something from him.  [report anonymous abuse]

anonymous Hi William September 20, 2006 12:42 PM

I've been reading about this, and I have to say that what the organization did was utterly without tact, diplomacy, or compassion. Steve Irwin did a lot of good - more than I think many people might realize. I agree that Steve's methods were, to say the least, unorthodox, but his efforts have changed the way people look at wildlife and their habitat. In my opinion, that's what Steve spent his life trying to do - to change the way people think about wildlife and the world - and I feel that PETA was seriously out of line in what they did.

News Release
6th September 2006

HSI pays tribute to Steve Irwin

Humane Society International is greatly saddened by the death of Steve Irwin, Australia’s famous Wildlife Warrior.

Steven Irwin was an incredible ambassador for Australian wildlife who inspired millions around the world to care about conservation and animal protection. His unique contribution to our cause is simply immeasurable and likely irreplaceable.

But Steve Irwin did even more than inspire the world to love and respect the animal kingdom, he invested his fortunes to achieve significant conservation gains in the wild through his charity Wildlife Warriors. Irwin was funding conservation projects in Australia, Asia and Africa. He was buying up large tracts of habitat and wilderness in efforts to save endangered species from extinction. The Irwin family has acquired 90,000 acres of conservation estate in Australia, while themselves leading a relatively modest life in a bungalow in Queensland.

Irwin established the Australian Wildlife Hospital in memory of his late mum, Lyn Irwin, who he proudly described as a pioneer in wildlife care in Australia. Irwin and his team have also been behind many a rescue missions for animals in strife; relocating hundreds koalas, crocodiles and kangaroos from harm.

While HSI may have reservations about the role of animals in zoos, now is not the time to pass comment on Irwin’s highly successful Australia Zoo.

What we can say is that HSI was pleased to find we had Steve Irwin battling on the same side as us in our many campaigns for stronger animal protection. Most recently HSI was extremely grateful to hear that Steve Irwin personally intervened to help clinch our campaign against the resumption of trophy hunting for saltwater crocodiles in the Northern Territory. After private representations from Steve Irwin, Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell, used Australia’s wildlife export legislation to ban the export of crocodile trophies from Australia, putting the end to the grisly money making hopes of the Territory’s crocodile hunters who Irwin attacked as ‘Hitlers’.

HSI is grateful for his life and all that it contributed to the cause of animal protection. We pass our sincere sympathies to the Irwin family for their tragic loss.

A much more favorable account of Mr. Irwin's work, wouldn't you say?  [report anonymous abuse]

THANK YOU!!! September 20, 2006 2:15 PM

Peta is a ASPCA wannabe, They can never stand up or do what they do. I never see where Peta goes out and rescues helpless animals, What I do hear is them sticking thier nosy noses in where it dont belong. I used to work for our local SPCA and we didnt belive what the PETA was doing was for the best interest of the animals. Its just an organization to say Hey look at me I am against fur. Well I think that Fur needs to be on the animals and not on the people. Thats why we have other clothing, When was the last time you saw a fish swimming around in a tux? I am glad that someone has finally gotten a petition to tell Peta off. I will definatly sign it and post if I can my comment say to them and tell them what I think of them.

anonymous Hi folks :) September 20, 2006 2:19 PM

Just a quick request to everyone to please try to stay focused, here.  We all know that PETA is a "hot topic" in many groups.  Please try to keep in mind that this group is not about PETA, it's about Steve Irwin, the important work he gave his life for, and the task we all have to carry on that incredible legacy.

It is indeed September 20, 2006 8:31 PM

a hot topic. Which I believe is and has been their goal. To denigrate someone who has done so much to forward the prevention of killing and cruelty to such animals as crocodiles and reptiles is taking it a bit too far.

Thank you for the petition and for making this egregious article known to those of us who had not seen it.

SIGNED

I noticed there are two very defrent veiws,  it is just how someone wants to look at how he was doing things and personally I think he was just doing his job.  So what gives the right for people to judge him for doing his job, which was teaching us about the aniaml's.    *kangaroor*

They've had my respect for YEARS, Will. .....and Nancy, you're absolutely right. Steve Irwin was a unique character whose unbridled , almost manic enthusiasm and passion for animals was often misinterpreted as exploitation and callous disregard by his skeptics....but hey.....How many people can honestly say they love their job more than he did?  [report anonymous abuse]

anonymous Mark W November 18, 2006 12:48 AM

The basic idea behind PETA is not evil, it's just the extremist leadership that has corrupted it. If that leadership can be overthrown, maybe PETA can be saved.

The same idea applies to other corrupted groups like the ACLU and the NRA. Extremism of ANY kind breeds ruin for any cause, including the causes Steve Irwin championed.

I agree with Peta as far as their desire to help animals.....

But come on.... Steve Irwin???? The greatest conservationist to grace our planet??? The man who has a daughter that won't even wear fake fur and insists that the faux fur be removed from the Australia Zoo gift shops because she feels that even by wearing faux fur you are making a statement that it is okay to look like you're wearing the animals that her father loved so dearly.

Peta needs to read a bit more about Steve's life and find out that he lived in a small bungalow right on the Australia Zoo grounds and that all of the money he made went to the welfare of animals and not to himself and his family for things they want. Terri, Bindi and Robert still reside in the bungalow and Bindi wants to carry on her father's work.

I will be more than happy to tell Peta they are wrong about Steve!!

Found this on PETA's website! Makes me so mad because if it wasn't for Irwin coming to the rescue of crocs they would be shot to death! Irwin never hurt an animal when filming his shows and was so passionate about each animal that it would put many members of PETA to shame! I signed and think most all members of PETA need to learn something from Irwin!

>>While these warriors claim to educate the world about the plight of wildlife and the importance of protecting animals whom we share the planet with, any positive message is lost when the presenter exploits and harasses the very animals who are meant to be protected.<<

PETA... LAWL January 12, 2007 9:15 AM

PETA should be ashamed of its mere existence. This is just confirmation of what we already knew: PETA is an organization of superflous whackjobs who need a serious psych evaluation.  [ send green star]

Steve Irwin January 12, 2007 9:39 AM

I signed

I wonder what Steves' impression was of PETA?  I find it laughable that they should wait till he passed to bring forth this type of stupid comment. I imagine his wife has too much class to respond publically to such a group of morons.

I don't have cable and therefore did not see many of his shows, but I know his "zanny" and funny attitude and kindness won many children and adults to an animal caring way of life. For every one person PETA has positivly influenced I would wager Steve had THOUSANDS!

I signed the petition.....

I can't believe Peta would stoop so low as to berrate a wonderful man who spent so much time, effort and his own funds to help the animals.

Peta should be ashamed!!! And to wait until he is gone to do it is even more absurd.

This has really changed my opinion of Peta and certainly not in a good way!!

Vote for Animals 2008 September 06, 2007 3:52 PM

Thank you, all. I'll be sending the petition tomorrow. There are many more signatures than expected, and even though it's been a year, I'm still going to let them know how many potential supporters they turned away. I'm all for the Humane Society because they get things accomplished in a positive way.

Anyway, I can't believe it's been a year already. The world seems empty at times, but he's so alive on the re-runs of the show and in the work Terri and Bindi have continued to do.

In honor I'm including a petition here that I wrote up asking the U.S. presidential candidates to pledge to conservation and pro-animal legislation. I know Steve was non-partisan, for good cause, considering what he was accomplishing, but I think my summary reports are worth looking at. We all can't be Steve Irwins, but we can vote, and voting brings us a long way too.

Think politics don’t effect animals? Think again.

Policy is how we get things done in a democracy.

I know how many animal lovers and activists hate politics, and believe me it’s not a pretty thing most of the time. And I know how many of my friends here on Care2 write back to me expressing how they’re uninterested n politics whenever I send around invitations to progressive political groups. But the fact of the matter is, as I demonstrate in the summary reports below at Election 2008, is that policy is the only way to make change. Political officials decide whether animals survive or flourish. Like it or not, the people we elect have the final say.

How can we change that? Vote and elect officials who promote pro-animal legislation. Get rid of the ones who vote against animals. You’ll see which party is which after reading the results.

Where do you think petitions go? Where do you think all of our favorite animal and environmental non-profit orgs go to lobby on an issue? Politicians.

Be heard. Write them and let them know you’re watching. But most importantly, vote!

Congress and Animals

I will personally deliver it to the campaigns of the official presidential candidates.
