The Legend of Emily West (Morgan) March 31, 2006 5:46 AM

"The Yellow Rose of Texas......the sweetest little rosebud, that Texas ever knew".

Emily West (Morgan) born a free african american in Connecticut, has become one of the greatest and most disputed legends of Texas. What follows is the stories I heard growing up. I will include links at end where anyone desiring too can read the different versions of the legends as well as the little that is considered documented facts.

Emily came to texas with James Morgan as an employee, but most believed they were lovers. Arriving at Galveston Bay sometime in Oct 1935, Morgan joined the Texas Army as a Col serving under Travis and left Galvestion to help win the Independance of Texas. Emily, was the beauty of Galvestion, a mulatto with long brown hair and beautiful yellowish brown skin. She turned heads everytime she walked down the street. Some claimed she was a prostitute; others claimed she was Morgans slave and a forced companion. She WAS a free woman who remained faithful to Morgan and they were mutually in love.
When the mexican army took Galveston on April 16, 1836 they also took Emily. Santa Ana, upon first seeing her, claimed her for his own.
April 21st, just five days later, Gen Sam Houston with an army of 800, readied himself for the next attack against the mexican army of 1600. A spy was sent in with a message for Emily to protect herself for they would be attacking at siesta time. Emily decided on a different plan, instead of hiding she plotted to keep the general entertained and distracted during siesta. Her plan worked.

The Texas army, under the leadership of General Sam Houston, who the City of Houston is named after, attacked the Mexican army during siesta time.
With the river at their backs cutting off any hope of escape, the Texas army defeated the Mexican army with little effort.
Santa Anna was reported to have been in his tent "enjoying" the company of Emily Morgan.
Because it took so long for their general to get out of his tent and organize his men (due to 'the yellow rose') there was chaos when the attack occured. Without their leader, they scrambled unorganized into defeat. By the time Santa Ana realized what was happening and made it out of his tent the battle was over.
Led by Gen. Sam Houston, independence was won in one of the most decisive battles in history when Texians defeated the Mexican forces of Santa Anna at the "Battle of San Jacinto". Santa Anna's entire force of 1,600 men was killed or captured by Houston's army of 800 Texians... only nine Texians died.

The original version circa 1850's
The Yellow rose of Texas
That I am going to see
No other cowboy loves her
Half as much as me.
She cried so when I left her
It almost broke my heart
And if I ever find her
We never more shall part.
You can talk about your Clementine
And speak of Rosalie
But the yellow rose of Texas
Is the only girl for me!

other versions of song March 31, 2006 6:18 AM

Mitch Miller 1955

There's a yellow rose in Texas, that I am going to see,
Nobody else could miss her, not half as much as me.
She cried so when I left her, it like to broke my heart,
And if I ever find her, we nevermore will part.

She's the sweetest little rosebud that Texas ever knew,
Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew;
You may talk about your Clementine, and sing of Rosalee,
But the yellow rose of Texas is the only girl for me.

When the Rio Grande is flowing, the starry skies are bright,
She walks along the river in the quiet summer night:
I know that she remembers, when we parted long ago,
I promise to return again, and not to leave her so.

She's the sweetest little rosebud that Texas ever knew,
Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew;
You may talk about your Clementine, and sing of Rosalee,
But the yellow rose of Texas is the only girl for me.

Oh now I'm going to find her, for my heart is full of woe,
And we'll sing the songs together, that we sung so long ago
We'll play the bango gaily, and we'll sing the songs of yore,
And the yellow rose of Texas shall be mine forevermore.

She's the sweetest little rosebud that Texas ever knew,
Her eyes are bright as diamonds, they sparkle like the dew;
You may talk about your Clementine, and sing of Rosalee,
But the yellow rose of Texas is the only girl for me.

Oh the yellow rose of texas is the only girl I love
Her eyes are even bluer than texas skies above
Her heart’s as big as texas and wherever I may go
I’ll remember her forever because I love her so

There are so many roses that bloom along the way
But my heart’s in amarillo and that’s where it will stay
With the yellow rose of texas so I’d better get there fast
’cause I know I was her first love and I want to be her last

Oh the yellow rose of texas is the only girl I love
Her eyes are even bluer than texas skies above
Her heart’s as big as texas and wherever I may go
I’ll remember her forever because I love her so

The eyes of texas are upon you all the live long day
The eyes of texas are upon you, you cannot get away
Do not think you can escape them at night or early in the morn
The eyes of texas are upon you ’till gabriel blows his horn

The eyes of texas are upon you all the live long day
The eyes of texas are upon you, you cannot get away
Do not think you can escape them at night or early in the morn
The eyes of texas are upon you ’till gabriel blows his horn

The eyes of texas are upon you all the live long day
The eyes of texas are upon you, you cannot get away
Do not think you can escape them at night or early in the morn
The eyes of texas are upon you ’till gabriel blows his horn

Johnny Lee

There's a yellow rose in Texas
I'm going home to see
Though other men have held her
Her heart belongs to me.

You've traveled down some dusty roads
And slept out in the rain
But this yellow rose is always here
when you come home again

She knows I've done some hard time
You've stumbled and you fell
I just kept your pride from dying
You saved my soul from hell

She's a diamond of the desert
She's a golden flower of spring
She's the yellow rose in Texas
She can make a man a king

There's a yellow rose in Texas
She knows the dues I've paid
And I'm going home to tell her
I wish I nevered strayed

You couldn't see beyond yourself
Your pain and wounded pride
But now you know the truth is
in the way you feel inside

She knows I've done some hard time
You've stumbled and you fell
I just kept your pride from dying
You saved my soul from hell

She's a diamond of the desert
She's a golden flower of spring
She's the yellow rose in Texas
She can make a man a king

Yes the yellow rose of Texas
Can make a man a king.

Legend of the Texas Bluebonnet April 02, 2006 6:43 AM

The Texas fields are covered
With a blanket of deep blue.
But for a little Indian girl,
This would not be true.

Texas land was buried and dry.
Rains just would not come.
Indians danced and prayed for rain,
And beat upon their drums.

The Chief made a proclamation.
He appealed to one and all.
A prized possession must be sacrificed
Before the rains would fall.

The Indian camp was silent,
While each person searched his heart.
But when it came to sacrifice,
With possessions they would not part.

Suddenly a little girl stepped forth,
Holding her blue-clad doll.
She placed it in the roaring fire
And raindrops began to fall.

The rain brought forth the grass,
Among its blades, flowers of blue.
To be a sign for all the time
Of a love so pure and true.
