the politics of animal rights April 10, 2006 1:40 PM

As an extreme leftie, I seem to get a lot of right-wingers agreeing with me on the animal rights issue than on any other issue.  I look at this issue the way I look at most issues, in terms of human equality and opportunity for all.  As a Marxist, I put human life, all human life, first.

But let's face it, we need to take care of the environment and the animals in it.  I find it sad when I see animals killed for no reason.  But I also find it sad when we see one-sided media manipulation of the seal hunt, for example.  The fact is that these seals need to be killed to bring about equilibrium or, at worst, to bring a way of making a living to the sealers.  The fact we see baby seals getting harpooned demonstrates how the media only picks and chooses what to show.  It is en vogue to save seals while the people suffering from this misrepresentation can just go to hell.

Who are the people suffering from misrepresentation exactly? The sealers? If you feel so strongly about it, why don't you make a documentary showing the lives of the sealers and educate us all?

All journalism is slanted to some extent....but come on, what's more humane... killing baby and adult seals for profit or people finding a new jobs...hhmmmm. Most people have to change jobs and careers over a dozen times in their lifetimes to make ends meet and adjust to changes.  [ send green star]

The fact is that these seals need to be killed to bring about equilibrium

There would be equilibrium without sealing.

The earth's population is exploding with people. Does that mean that people need to be killed to bring about an equilibrium?  [ send green star]

No, it should be done ethically.  [ send green star]

People ARE being killed August 03, 2006 1:30 AM

whether we like it or not. It's called the war on terrorism.  [ send green star]

I have known many hunters and their mentality is always the same. They use the whole equilibrium card as a way to justify things in their minds and ease the guilt. Those who truly need to hunt and fish to survive aren't typically bolstering their opinions around....they're too busy looking for their next meal.
It's evident that getting a trophy buck or the biggest fish is always the main goal...sort of an ego thing...'mine is bigger than yours.' I think hunters who hunt for sport only are just looking for some power trip because they feel powerless in some other area of their life. But that's my opinion.

Still not sure why I was invited to this group...it's really not very friendly. hmmm

But I'm a fairy in the middle of a bunch of testosterone. ha
Are jokes allowed here? I saw someone was given a warning in another link for going off topic....whew...best not tee off the schoolmaster. How many warnings 'til I get a detention? hehehe

Estrogen vs. Testosterone August 03, 2006 1:56 AM

Don't worry Crystal, Estrogen will always defeat Testosterone. I'm not sure why, but I know it's true!  [ send green star]

How many have you actually known? Were they sealers or professional hunters, or recreational? I've never heard a hunter I met in real life use that justification.

When I was a hunter August 03, 2006 2:13 AM

I didn't even think about the ethics, I just killed. Most likely that's just the way it is. When I read about snipers, they always say, "It's just a target." Of course, it's really a human being, but the snipers would rather think, "It's just a target."  [ send green star]

Equilibriam...population control.....

It takes one buck to impregnate a herd of does. So why are their more buck tags than doe tags? Wouldn't it make more sense to kill the does - if it truly is about population control?

Why do the proud hunters mount their kill in their homes if it just about feeding their family?  When meat eaters such as lions hunt - they always go for the old and weak. Human hunters do the exact opposite. They want the young buck - they want the rack - they want the envy of all of their friends.

Very good point.

I live in the middle of redneck-ville Florida, and all I see in the backs of these guys trucks are antlers; there is even a Taxidermy guy down the road from me.
Mother Nature takes care of its' own without our intervention...WE are the ones who need population control and just stop overtaking every square mile of this earth.

Hey Kathy...and all the rest y'all... March 19, 2009 9:10 PM

Just gettin back on the net lately.  Anyway, I grew up in a 'hunting' family.  I helped my brother hold the legs of a deer apart while she was still alive so my stupid %#&!*% stepdad could split her with his knife.

Karmic Retribution March 19, 2009 9:14 PM

Although, I knew what I was doing was wrong...I just kept on doing whatever else the rest of the stupid ass human race was doing.
