The Deep Griha Society, now over thirty years old, was first registered in 1975. The organization was started by Rev Bhaskar Onawale and his wife Dr. Neela Onawale, a medical practitioner. With the help of like-minded friends it began operating in July of that same year.
A small-scale project to begin with, Dr. Neela Onawale opened a one room medical clinic providing primary health care from their home on the campus where Reverend Onawale taught. The response was very encouraging and within two years one hundred patients were receiving medical care. It was apparent that there is a strong relationship between poor nutrition and ill health. A nutrition program providing free food and health education was set up to help address some of the causes of ill health being presented. Thus began a natural progression of community development through human empowerment.
One of Deep Griha's aims is to always ensure that funds are spent where they are most needed. With this in mind the organization has been responsive to the changing needs of the community.
Since 1975 Deep Griha has grown from one employee to over two hundred in 2000. Today (2005) as a result of a lack of funding and organizational restructuring they have approximately one hundred staff. They have three main centers operating in the Tadiwala Road, Ramtekadi and Bibwewadi slums, which have a combined population of more than fifty thousand (50,000) people.
Please visit Deep Griha's website to find out more about their programs, and how you could help, and even become a part of their life-changing work.
In the meantime, WELCOME! As this new group begins to grow, you'll be meeting members of the Deep Griha staff and finding out about the trials, tribulations, successes and heartbreaks of working with the special citizens of Pune's slums.
