Getting our Young People Involved May 19, 2007 3:08 PM
It's not hard to get involved! You can still have your video games, etc. Just find a way to incorporate what you love into volunteer work!
If you enjoy playing Texas Hold'em, for example, go to a senior center and teach it to some older folks who used to play Five Card Stud back in the day. It will just delight them. If you enjoy video games, volunteer at the hospital in the children's ward to play with some sick kids once a week. Things like that really CAN extend a person's life. If you like to cook, get yourself into a soup kitchen. If you sew or crochet, sell/raffle things you make to benefit a cause, or give them away to charities. If you love animals, check out the local animal shelter. Volunteer at the library to read to children.
Are you into Japanese anime? Consider teaching English in Japan when you graduate! Want to travel? Look into the Peace Corps! Are you fluent in Spanish? Help new immigrants to America and Europe learn English! Concerned about global warming? Get out there and start a recycling program in your school, and plant some trees. Use the money you can get from selling aluminum cans to support your school band or drama department. Educate yourself about candidates, and volunteer for a campaign.
