Gates gives Millions to AIDS Research for Children May 28, 2007 10:08 PM

Gates Foundation Gives $9.7 Million to Pediatric AIDS Research Cristina Frick    Monday, 21 May 2007 The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation plans to give $9.7 million to the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The grant will allow for clinical trials of a vaccine that aims to prevent HIV/AIDS transmission from mother to child through breastfeeding...

According to Pamela Barnes of the Elizabeth Glaser Foundation, 14 percent of HIV cases appear in children who contract the disease from their mothers. She also said that research about HIV/AIDS vaccines for children is lacking and needs to become a more central focus of HIV/AIDS research. Says Barnes,
“We need research aimed at both children and adults and the Gates Foundation is helping make that possible.” (ABC)
The grant from the Gates Foundation will allow the relatively small Glaser Foundation to have an even bigger impact on HIV/AIDS research and prevention.

The Gates Foundation has donated almost $500 million to HIV/AIDS research and prevention. They have also focused on childhood HIV/AIDS research.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
