Newest Healthcare Reform Actions November 11, 2009 2:18 PM

Newest Healthcare Reform Actions Please do any, or all, you can :) This Action, on Change.org, the url :) Newest Healthcare Reform Acts :) http://healthcare.change.org/actions/view/newest_healthcare_reform_acts http://www.change.org/profile/189788/actions Stop Stupac the Amendment, or any version of it. As well, no trigger, because triggers don't get pulled. Also, please, advocate for singlepayer healthcare, with Community First Choice Option and CLASS Act (Community Choice Act for the handicapped, elderly, autistic, disabled, etc.); H.R. 676 & S. 703, are the best of the lot, so far. support women's healthcare now :) http://womensrights.change.org/actions/view/support_womens_healthcare_now Related actions and group :) Healthcare Reform Actions :) http://healthcare.change.org/actions/view/healthcare_reform_actions http://www.change.org/profile/189788/actions http://www.singlepayeraction.org//join.html AAUW Action Network: An Attack on Reproductive Health Care: New Domestic Gag Rule :) On Saturday night, the House passed the largest health care overhaul bill in 40 years. Many of AAUW's key priorities were included in the Affordable Health Care for America Act (H.R. 3962), including coverage for maternity care, preventive care, an end to gender rating, and other protections for women. It's a victory for millions of Americans who are one step closer to quality, affordable health care. Unfortunately, this victory came at a price that is outrageous and unacceptable. Anti-choice representatives also passed an amendment to the bill that will severely undermine women's access to complete and safe reproductive health care services. The amendment, offered by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-MI), will eliminate coverage for abortion services in the public option. Current law already bans the use of federal dollars to pay for abortion, but this amendment goes further by prohibiting women who receive federal subsidies from purchasing a comprehensive insurance plan that includes abortion services. Private plans that offer abortion coverage would be banned from receiving funding. This type of restriction would force private insurance companies to choose between eliminating abortion coverage for all insured members and being eligible to serve patients by receiving federal subsidies. As a result, millions of women who have this coverage now would lose it, effectively ending coverage for abortion services and instituting what amounts to a domestic gag rule. Women who could afford it could pay extra for a "rider" policy to cover such services, but the very nature of unplanned pregnancies makes this an illogical and impractical notion. AAUW has long advocated for choice in the determination of one's reproductive life and increased access to health care and family planning services. There's no doubt that health care reform is desperately needed, but it should not come on the backs of women. A fundamental principle of health care has always been to "do no harm." Make no mistake; the Stupak amendment does just that--leaving millions of women worse off than they were before. This is the biggest attempt to ban abortion services in years, and a similar amendment is already in the works in the Senate. Take Action: Contact your senators today and urge them to oppose any amendments that jeopardize women's access to complete reproductive health care coverage. Then, take another minute to contact your representative about his or her vote on the Stupak amendment :) Senate: http://www.capwiz.com/aauw/issues/alert/?alertid=14329551 House: http://www.capwiz.com/aauw/issues/alert/?alertid=14329496&type=CO Center for Reproductive Rights: TAKE ACTION: The Fight is Not Over Yet :) Saturday's House vote was a terrible blow for women's health and rights -- but the fight is not over yet. The Pro-Choice Caucus has crafted a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vowing to oppose a healthcare bill that restricts a woman's right to choose any further than current law. Tell your Members of Congress to sign the letter and show their support for American women! :) http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5971/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1275 Planned Parenthood Action: A painful blow to women's health care :) While there are some who are satisfied with the health care reform bill that passed in the House of Representatives late Saturday night, I am not one of them. When it came down to it, Congress passed a bill that will undercut women's access to comprehensive health care. Despite hundreds of thousands of voters like you and me who called on members of Congress to include women's health care in health care reform, the bill that passed Saturday night includes a ban on private abortion coverage for millions of women and would prohibit it in the new "public option." Opponents of legal abortion and health care for women are emboldened by Saturday night's vote and ready to bring their ban on abortion to the Senate floor. But now it's our turn. And this time we are going to use our strongest weapon: the White House. That's why, today, we are calling on President Obama :) http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/hcr09bse_af/xkwgn64z778xn8d?qp_source=hcr09bse%5fe1%5faf Mobilization for Health Care for All :) Two Health Care Advocates Remain in Jail, Take Action To Support their Cause Now :) Yesterday morning, Mobilization for Health Care for All made another urgent demand to get insurance money out of our democracy so that real reform will not be blocked in America. http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/1312/t/10007/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=2159 to sign a petition to Sen. Two critical provisions that change the way long term services are delivered and funded for people with disabilities and seniors are included. These two provisions complement one another and must be a part of the final Senate bill! The Finance Committee bill includes the Community First Choice (CFC) Medicaid Option. Urge Senator + Sen Finance Com: include Community 1st Choice September 26, 2009 10:22 AM

Urge Senator + Sen Finance Com: include Community 1st Choice This Action, on Change.org, the url :) Community First Choice :) http://autism.change.org/actions/view/community_first_choice http://www.change.org/profile/189788/actions Urge your Senator and the Senate Finance Committee to include the Community First Choice option in the committee health reform bill. :) http://capwiz.com/rochestercdr/issues/alert/?alertid=14029391&queueid=[capwiz:queue_id] Take Action! The Senate Finance Committee is about to begin final mark-up of their health reform bill. It is critical that we take action now to get them to include a proposal which addresses Medicaid's institutional bias. ADAPT, NCIL, the Arc, the Coalition for Community Integration and other advocates have developed a proposal for a state option that would give states an enhanced federal Medicaid match for providing attendant services and supports as an alternative to institutional placement. This proposal is called the Community First Choice (CFC) option. It is urgent that we contact our Senators and key Finance Committee leaders to ask them to support including the Community First Choice in the committee's health reform bill. Click on the Take Action link located near the top of this Alert to be taken to a letter you can send to your Senators and the Senate Finance Committee leadership. Related group and actions :) http://www.singlepayeraction.org//join.html We Need Your Support for Single Payer :) Back to http://www.GP.org In Durham, North Carolina this July, delegates at the Annual National Meeting of the Green Party of the United States chose working for a Single Payer Health Care System as one of the top priorities for the coming year. With your support, we can make this priority a reality. The Green Party has taken a strong stand, based in experience, to reform our nation's health care system. All across the country, the health insurance debate rages. The debate is centered around reforming the health insurance companies. The Green Party has a tradition of going to the root of the problem. The problem will not be addressed by making minor changes to require health insurance companies to provide a bit more health care to a few more people.... We exist not to dabble in small adjustments on the edges of corporate America, but instead to pressure for basic reforms. The Green Party honors health care as a basic right for all rather than as a rationed privilege only for those who have. We advocate for a Single Payer Health Care System. Our candidates stand firmly for Single Payer when they run for office, our elected officials stand for Single Payer when in office, and our members advocate for Single Payer in their daily lives. The idea of health care as a right is not a radical position, but instead is part of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/ the founding document of the United Nations, of which the United States was a signatory in 1948. It states: "Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services" Our health care system in the United States is the most expensive in the world. A Single Payer system would cut the cost of health care delivery by as much as one third. Our health care system was ranked 37th in 2000 by the World Health Organization. A Single Payer system would be able to deliver better health care to more people. Advocating for Single Payer is a protection.... ...for each of us as individuals. Our nation's health care is only as strong as the weakest link. If some of us are vulnerable to diseases such as tuberculosis, which is among us now, or to any of the predcited pandemics that will come with our population, water, and environmental challenges, then all of us are vulnerable. The future of our nation's health security lies in our willingness to address the health of the least of us . ...for our nation's businesses, so that they might more fairly compete with other nations. ...for our workers, so that they might be as productive as possible ...for our cities, towns, villages, counties, schools, so that providing health care doesn't bankrupt them. ...for our children, that they might realize a healthy future. Please show your support for the Green Party of the United States, the only political party that stands firmly for a Single Payer Health Care System, and for health care as a right as the most practical way to ensure our nation's health security. Your gift of any amount will strengthen the Green Party's voice for Single Payer. You can donate here. Sustainers are our base of support, enabling us to count upon a base level of income each month to pay our excellent staff, to sustain our Washington DC office, and to support advocacy of issues like Single Payer and other issues. Many people find that it is more affordable to spread their donation out monthly. During our time together in Durham, we called for an increase in monthly sustainers from 250 to 500. We want to give you an opportunity to be a part of this effort by becoming sustainers or increasing your monthly gift. With your help we can meet the $10,000 per month goal. You can start your sustainer here. If you are already a sustainer, please consider increasing your level by as much as you can by contacting Brian Bittner at brian@gp.org or 202-319-7191. If you would prefer or are better able to give a one-time donation, your support will be put to good use as we move forward. You can donate here. Remember, The Green Party takes no money from real estate companies, investment firms, or insurance companies. In fact, we don't take any corporate money because we think corporate money in politics is wrong. Keep women's care in healthcare reform :) July 21, 2009 5:15 AM

Keep women's care in healthcare reform :) This Action, on Change.org, the url :) womens care = healthcare :) http://healthcare.change.org/actions/view/womens_care_healthcare http://www.change.org/profile/189788/actions Urgent: Senator Hatch targets Planned Parenthood :) URGENT: Senator Orrin Hatch is lying in order to cut women — and Planned Parenthood — out of health care reform, no matter the cost to millions of people.Tell Senator Hatch he is wrong. Tell him American women can't be fooled. http://www.ppaction.org//campaign/protectwomenshealth09pporg We've been deeply concerned that women would be the first targets in health care reform and now it's happened. Yesterday, anti-choice Senator Orrin Hatch launched an attack on Planned Parenthood and the U.S. senators who were trying to help women. Earlier this week, Senator Mikulski of Maryland, joined by four other senators, offered an amendment to make sure that preventive care for women — like birth control and cancer screenings — is included in health care legislation. The amendment also made sure women and their families can still see the doctors and nurses they trust. The amendment passed, and it was a strong victory for women's health. And now the other side is trying their best to take it away. Within hours, Senator Hatch and his allies started spreading lies. Their aim: to cut millions of women — and Planned Parenthood — out of health care reform. Their method: to mislead the media and Americans about what the amendment actually does. Instead of telling the truth, he claimed that it mandates abortion coverage in an attempt to drum up opposition. This is an outright lie — and we need your help to fight back. http://www.ppaction.org//campaign/protectwomenshealth09pporg Senator Hatch and his allies have made themselves clear. They believe that providing trusted and essential health care to millions of Americans is less important than pushing their anti-choice ideology. They are wrong. Women's health matters — it matters to me and I know it matters to you. Let's show him just how wrong he is — take a moment right now to sign a petition to Senator Hatch. http://www.ppaction.org//campaign/protectwomenshealth09pporg It is truly outrageous. Senator Hatch and his anti-women's health allies are willing to sacrifice the health care of so many women, men, and families for one reason — to undermine women's ability to get preventive and primary reproductive health care. The fact is that without genuine access to care, women's health is in jeopardy. You and I know that, and that's why we won't accept health care reform that cuts out reproductive health care and women's health providers like Planned Parenthood. Please, sign your name and make sure Senator Hatch gets the message. http://www.ppaction.org//campaign/protectwomenshealth09pporg This isn't the first attack on women's health and Planned Parenthood since the health care reform debate began — and you can bet it won't be the last. Thank you for standing strong with us today, and please bear with us as we communicate with you frequently on this critical struggle. Use fax or e-mail. You may also consult your senators' and representative's Web sites for telephone numbers. Get started now. Please also contact the following Members of Congress who have supported Peltier in the past to urge them to immediately write a letter to the U.S. Parole Commission. --> Rep. John Conyers, Jr., Chairman, House Judiciary Committee. Call 202-225-3951. --> Sen. Daniel Inouye via the Committee on Indian Affairs at (202) 224-2251; . A SHOUT OUT to Minnesota: Remember that your new senator, Al Franken, is the newest member of the Committee on Indian Affairs. Drop him a line, too. --> The members of the Congressional Black Caucus at 202-226-9776; . Remind them of the congressional briefing with the CBC on the Peltier case on May 17, 2000. A number of the members supported Leonard a decade ago and must do so again. They can help to educate their newer members, as well. But time is of the essence. Members of special note include Rep. John Conyers, Jr., (MI), Rep. John Lewis (GA), Rep. Maxine Waters (CA), and Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (DC). The Leonard Peltier Defense Offense Committee also has asked that all supporters contact Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi to urge her also to renew her commitment to Leonard's freedom. Contact the Speaker of the House at 202-225-0100. Or use e-mail: or . San Francisco constituents may also reach Ms. Pelosi at (415) 556-4862 or at her DC office (202-225-4965). ----- Additions :) Sample Letter :) United States Parole Commission 5550 Friendship Boulevard Suite 420 Chevy Chase, MD 20815-7286 (Insert Date) Re: LEONARD PELTIER #89637-132 Dear Commissioners, Convicted in connection with the deaths on June 26, 1975, of Ronald Williams and Jack Coler, agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Mr. Leonard Peltier remains imprisoned at the United States Penitentiary in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The court record in this case clearly shows that government prosecutors have long held that they do not know who killed Mr. Coler and Mr. Williams nor what role Leonard Peltier "may have" played in the tragic shoot-out. Further, in a decision filed by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals on December 18, 2002, Mr. Peltier’s sentences "were imposed in violation of [Peltier's] due process rights because they were based on information that was false due to government misconduct,” and, according to the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, in 2003: "…Much of the government’s behavior at the Pine Ridge Reservation and its prosecution of Leonard Peltier is to be condemned. The government withheld evidence. It intimidated witnesses. These facts are not disputed." Despite these admissions, Leonard Peltier has served over 33 years in prison. After careful consideration of the facts in Leonard Peltier's case, I have concluded that Leonard Peltier does not represent a risk to the public. First, Leonard Peltier has no prior convictions and has advocated for non-violence throughout his prison term. Furthermore, Leonard Peltier has been a model prisoner. He has received excellent evaluations from his work supervisors on a regular basis. He continues to mentor young Native prisoners, encouraging them to lead clean and sober lives. He has used his time productively, disciplining himself to be a talented painter and an expressive writer. Although Leonard Peltier maintains that he did not kill the agents, he has openly expressed remorse and sadness over their deaths. Most admirably, Mr. Peltier contributes regular support to those in need. He donates his paintings to charities including battered women's shelters, half way houses, alcohol and drug treatment programs, and Native American scholarship funds. He also coordinates an annual holiday gift drive for the children of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Leonard Peltier is widely recognized for his good deeds and in turn has won several awards including the North Star Frederick Douglas Award; Federation of Labour (Ontario, Canada) Humanist of the Year Award; Human Rights Commission of Spain International Human Rights Prize; and 2004 Silver Arrow Award for Lifetime Achievement. Mr. Peltier also has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize six times. Leonard Peltier is now over 60 years of age—a great-grandfather—and suffers from partial blindness, diabetes, a heart condition, and high blood pressure. I recognize the grave nature of the events of June 26, 1975, and I extend my deepest sympathy to the families of those who died that day. However, I find aspects of this case to also be of concern and I believe Leonard Peltier deserves to be reunited with his family and allowed to live the remaining years of his life in peace. I also believe that, rather than presenting a threat to the public, Mr. Peltier’s release would help to heal a wound that has long impeded better relations between the federal government and American Indians. Thank you for your time and consideration. Sincerely yours, Signature (Your Name) (Your Street Address) (Your City, State, and Zip Code) IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL SUPPORTERS: When you write a letter in support of Leonard's parole, mail the letter directly to the U.S. Parole Commission, but also please send a copy of your correspondence to the Peltier Legal Team, c/o LP-DOC, P.O. Additions to LP medical alert :) July 06, 2009 9:01 AM

Additions to LP medical alert :) Sample letter, email, or talking points for calls :) Warden Bledsoe Warden for Lewisburg Prison, PA Email: LEW/EXECASSISTANT@BOP.GOV Subject: Concerning Leonard Peltier, #89637-132 Dear Warden Bledsoe, Hello. As you may be aware, Leonard Peltier, #89637-132, has had a scare with prostate cancer. He is now having blood in his urine and he desperately needs to have an oncologist examine him. A general practitioner operating in the prison system is not sufficient; he needs to be seen by a specialist. The urgency is due to his previous scare of cancer and his current, urgent, medical needs; only a specialist can determine the state of his health. According to his medical he is supposed to receive an exam every three months, but according to Leonard he has only been seen once a year. How can this be? As everyone knows one examination can give you warning, anyone who has had a prognosis or scare with prostate cancer, that is, you need to see an oncologist and be examined regularly. Again, Warden, please give Leonard Peltier the proper medical attention he has the right to. Thanx. Goodbye. Truly,  [ send green star]

Dale Sent: May 8, 2009 1:30 PM Subject: RE: Community Choice Act Bob, We apologize that it has taken us this long to respond. This is a very important issue and we would like to clarify our position. The Administration looks forward to continuing to engage with the disability community about a wide range of important issues, including the steps the Administration has taken to improve the well-being of those who live with disabilities. Among the issues we look forward to working with you on is the Community Choice Act. The President supports enactment of this important bill. He remains committed to working with you to expand access to community services and independent living and to enforcing existing civil rights laws, including the ADA, in order to ensure access to necessary services in the most integrated setting. We know many are interested in the relationship between the Community Choice Act and health care reform. The President is working closely with Congress to pass a good health reform bill this year and remains open to working with the Hill on these issues. We believe that our efforts will improve the lives of many uninsured people with disabilities, and make it easier to take the next step of expanding access to critical community services. Beyond the Congressional session this year, the Administration looks forward to working with the disability and aging communities to address access to Medicaid home- and community-based services and continue to address civil rights concerns of Americans with disabilities to have the right to live in the most integrated setting appropriate to their needs as enshrined by the Supreme Court in the Olmstead decision. "The President believes that more can be done to encourage states to shift more of their services away from institutions and into the community, which is both cost effective and humane." This is the statement that has replaced a statement of support for the Community Choice Act that was on the White House website. Is this the Obama administration CLARIFYING it's position on long term services and supports and the institutional bias, or CHANGING it's position? Coincidence it comes a short time after the protest at the White House? Who can say. All we can say is this statement doesn't even address the institutional bias, let alone consumer direction, the civil right to live in the least restrictive setting or any other core issues for the disability community. In fact it puts our rights back in a States Rights trap once again. *************** From Nick Dupree Before ADAPT Action: And fourth, support independent, community-based living for Americans with disabilities by enforcing the Community Choice Act, which would allow Americans with significant disabilities the choice of living in their community rather than having to live in a nursing home or other institution, creating a voluntary, budget-neutral national insurance program to help adults who have or develop functional disabilities to remain independent and in their communities, and streamline the Social Security approval process . This Week: http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/disabilities/ Promote Access to Community Living Services Too many people who need assistance with activities of every day life are faced with a difficult choice. They can move into a nursing home and face safety and quality of care problems or risk injury or death by staying in the community without adequate services to take care of personal needs. The President believes that more can be done to encourage states to shift more of their services away from institutions and into the community, which is both cost effective and humane. For Mother's Day, can you help Mother's around the world :) May 09, 2009 10:32 PM

For Mother's Day, can you help Mother's around the world :) These Actions, on Change.org, the url :) For Mother's Day :) http://womensrights.change.org/actions/view/for_mothers_day Empower women around the world this Mother's Day :) Dear Friends, Empowering women is one of the most effective ways to end global poverty. This Mother’s Day, I hope you will join us in empowering women and fighting poverty around the world by urging the U.S. Senate to ratify the International Treaty for the Rights of Women. Please add your name to the petition :) http://www.lendtoendpoverty.org/email/ Watch a video :) http://www.lendtoendpoverty.org/video.asp before Mother’s Day, this Sunday, May 10th. Our goal is to gather 10,000 petition signatures by Mother's Day. The Treaty (also known as the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women or “CEDAW” for short) is the most complete international agreement on basic rights for women. Yet the U.S. is one of only eight countries (including Sudan, Iran and Somalia) who have not yet ratified this important treaty. Please join us in urging the Senate to take this simple but significant step to help empower women around the world economically, socially, legally and politically without further delay. Click here to add your name by Mother's Day, May 10th, and help us reach our 10,000-signature goal :) http://www.lendtoendpoverty.org/email/ Although microfinance is a crucial tool for fighting poverty, it is far more effective in an environment where women’s basic rights are protected and respected. It is a known fact that families, communities and entire societies benefit when women are empowered. Microfinance efforts have shown again and again that financially empowered women invest in the nutritional, health and educational needs of their children, helping to permanently lift their families and communities out of poverty. Please join us in honoring hard-working mothers everywhere by adding your name to our petition by this Sunday, May 10th. Then, please help us spread the word about this great way to celebrate Mother’s Day. Just forward this message on to your friends and family and ask them to join you in taking action before Sunday. Thank you so much for your help. Sincerely, Elisabeth Rhyne Managing Director, Center for Financial Inclusion at ACCION International ©2009 ACCION International. This is the year that significant health care reform legislation must be enacted. Getting it done won't be easy. The insurance industry, the pharmaceutical industry, hospital corporations and other major health care players will do their best to derail meaningful reform. With President Obama's support and encouragement, Congress can avoid being captured by the corporate lobbyists and can pass legislation assuring quality, affordable health care for everyone. The American people demand no less. Thank you. Truly, (add your name, address, and phone # (needed for letters to the editor)) Subject: Please, Save our economy, Put single-payer health insurance on the table :) Dear Sirs, Hello. Americans deserve a simple, efficient, single-payer health care system – a universal system designed along the lines of Medicare. House Resolution 676, The United States National Health Insurance Act, establishes such a system. It will provide better care for everyone, at a reduced cost. As President Obama has repeatedly acknowledged, our current health care system is too costly, and it fails to cover tens of millions of people. Tens of millions more cannot afford adequate care. Please voice your support for HR 676, which will establish an inclusive, efficient, single-payer health care system. Thank you. Winter 09 issue, Green Pages is available / online reading March 02, 2009 5:04 AM

Back to GP.org The Winter 2009 issue of Green Pages is now available for on-line reading. Our first electronic-only edition contains many improvements, including the use of video, color photos, one article available in English and Spanish. We're now located directly on the gp.org server and feature a newly designed masthead. Unlike the previous print editions, you'll be able to post comments directly into the blog. This issue includes a feature article by Wendy Thompson, a long time Green and former UAW local president about a recent caravan of labor activists who drove from Detroit to DC to bring their message to a national audience. In Elections you'll find two important articles detailing the paths that state parties in Arkansas and Illinois have followed for growing the party. The Opinion Section contains an article, in english and spanish, about statehood for Puerto Rico. Finally, this issue brings what we hope will be the first of many articles by Young Greens. The 4 page PDF is being finalized and will be uploaded over the weekend. Read, Comment, Circulate. ADAPT: Congress- be initial cosponsors, Community Choice Act; etc.. February 18, 2009 2:12 AM

Ask your U.S. Senators and Representative in Congress to become initial co-sponsors of the Community Choice Act (CCA)! During the last Congress, we had a record number of legislators sign on as co-sponsors of the Community Choice Act (CCA). This legislation ends the institutional bias in the Medicaid program and gives people a real choice in how and where they receive long term services and supports. When this legislation is passed people won't be forced into a nursing facility or other institution to get the assistance they need. Because we now have a new Congress, the Community Choice Act needs to be reintroduced. We want to reintroduce the Community Choice Act with as many initial co-sponsors as we can get. We are confident that we can have a strong start and get this important legislation passed this during Congress! Use these links to contact your US Senators and Representative in Congress to ask that they become initial co-sponsors of the Community Choice Act. Contact your Senators at: http://capwiz.com/rochestercdr/issues/alert/?alertid=12598871 Contact your Representative in Congress at: http://capwiz.com/rochestercdr/issues/alert/?alertid=12597841 After you take action on this alert, pass it and ask others to help too. It only takes a couple of minutes but can make a huge difference. It's critical that we ALL make our voices heard on this important issue. FREE OUR PEOPLE! Thanx for sharing, posting, caring, et al :) January 10, 2009 12:55 AM

Hiya, wishing you the Happiest of New Years, all the way through.... Thanx for the efforts, friend, your work here is impressive. An injustice to any is an injustice to all, "we, the people...", can't allow it :) For e.g., the fundamental thing taught by Jesus was destruction and murder are of no profit or pleasure, something almost all supposed Christians are anti-thetically opposed to, as is your gov't; and a gleaning from Native American teaching, et al, all life are needed threads in the fabric of life. The more art is given, the more it is, as is life. A twig of poetree :) Cityscape Hustled and bustled, Still, hands only put to heart, Beings, only art. Put your shadow behind you, give the gift that keeps on giving, a hand to a sister and/or brother. Yet, that will not be enough to realize the possibility of the stopping of the extinction of humanity and large mammals we can see racing towards us from the future, on the horizon; we must change everything :) http://globalwarming.change.org/actions/view/tell_congress_your_priority I look forward to hearing from you. Isn't an important part of that challenging, working towards abolishing their tool of terror which determines most follow their leaders out of fear, if little else? For, we all know the innocent are premeditatedly murdered by the state to that purpose, the death penalty being a tool of the war on freedom. A smile alights life, laughter gives it flight. Arc Acts: Fight Offensive Portrayal: Intellectual Disabs; etc.. HELP CHART THE FUTURE OF THE ARC August 19, 2008 From: Peter V. Berns, Executive Director The Arc of the United States' Board of Directors has a Task Force on Affiliation and Growth that is assessing the current status of the organization and mapping out plans for the future. This planning process will only be successful if we have active participation of a broad range of people who are concerned about issues affecting people with intellectual disabilities and their families. To gather input our consultants, Tom McLaughlin and Stacey Zelbow of Grant Thornton, have created a confidential online survey. The link to the survey is: http://surveys.gt.com/arc-of-the-us-stakeholder-survey We would like to have the survey completed by as many people as follows. So please help us by doing the following: > Take the survey yourself by clicking on the link. > Forward the link to anyone else you think might be interested in participating. We apologize in the event that you are receiving this survey announcement more than once from different email lists. Please complete the survey only once. Thank you in advance for helping to make this planning process a success. DreamWorks is the film's producer and Paramount is its distributor. The premier will be held in Los Angeles, California on Monday, August 11. The film features popular actors Ben Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black as self-absorbed actors filming a big-budget war movie on location. Through a series of freak occurrences, they are forced to become the soldiers they are portraying. Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, a fading action star who earlier failed in his bid for an Oscar as "Simple Jack," a man with an intellectual disability. "Simple Jack" is featured as a film-within-a-film, with Stiller sporting a classic institutional bowl haircut and bad teeth (see poster below). The film within-a-film's slogan is "What he doesn't have in his head, he makes up for in his heart." A satirical plot synopsis quotes a critic as saying that Speedman's Jack was "one of the most retarded performances in cinema history." Status A small number of disability advocates was able to screen the film on Friday, August 8. Their assessment of the film was that it was far worse than anything they could have anticipated. According to David Tolleson, the Executive Director of the National Down Syndrome Congress who attended the screening, "it provides real ammunition for cruelty" especially for the film's target audience of adolescent males. "Not only is the Simple Jack character highly central to the film's plot, it is portrayed in the most demeaning way," according to Tolleson. In perhaps the single most offensive scene in the film, Matthew McConaughey, who plays a Hollywood agent, speaks to the film's main character who wants to adopt a child. "Well, at least you still have a choice. I'm stuck with mine," states McConaughey while pointing to a photograph of his teenage son who appears to have an intellectual disability. There has been mounting outrage from the disability community as the film's content is gradually becoming known. For excellent coverage of the issue, see http://www.patriciaebauer.com/2008/08/01/once-upon- a-time/ and related posts. Hundreds of comments have been posted on the blog expressing outrage about the movie. Representatives of a number of national disability organizations, including The Arc's Executive Director Peter V. Berns, met with DreamWorks and Paramount studio executives in Los Angeles, California on Wednesday, August 6. The purpose of the meeting was to express concerns, request a viewing of the film, and discuss possible solutions. Take Action Depending on negotiations with the studio executives over the weekend, The Arc and its coalition partners may be calling on its membership to take appropriate action. Such action includes a protest at the premier in Los Angeles on August 11 and/or national boycott when the film is released on August 13. Stay tuned......  [ send green star]

Emergency Action: Demand Medical Care for Roma Families Kosovo November 13, 2007 3:03 PM

Dear Members of Global Response’s “Quick Response Network:” http://www.globalresponse.org/ Last year we celebrated a campaign victory with the Roma people of Kosovo. They had been suffering acute lead poisoning while living for seven years in lead-contaminated United Nations camps for displaced persons. Our campaign persuaded UN officials to move the Roma families out of the contaminated camps to safer living quarters, and to administer medical treatment for lead poisoning. The medical treatment program that started in September 2006 has been effective but limited. We have received reports that some Roma families have not yet received treatment. According to these reports, in July the UN Mission in Kosovo stopped delivering food aid, which is a vital part of the medical treatment, to the Osterode camp. Then in October, the medical treatment for lead poisoning stopped. During the past months, sometimes the water in the camp has been turned off. The attorney who represents the Roma says their appeals to the United Nations fall on deaf ears. They are asking Global Response to turn up the volume! Please take action today on behalf of Roma families in Kosovo. Please send email messages to UN officials today. Urge them to guarantee that the Roma families at the Osterode camp continue to receive food aid and medical treatment for lead poisoning that occurred while they were under the protection of the United Nations. Let them know that world citizens demand decent care and living conditions for the Roma families in Kosovo, while they await construction of permanent housing. Send your message by email to these officials. (Email is better than letters in this case to avoid the U.N. security measures applied to regular mail.) Novartisdenies access to generic medicines to poor countries To: pha-exchange@lists.kabissa.org Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" from Bala ----- Geneva-Lausanne-Zurich, 23 November 2006 Novartis denies access to generic medicines to poor countries. Action in front of Novartis headquarters in Basel Today, Bern Declaration and Oxfam International campaigners organized a stunt in front of Novartis Headquarter in Basel, Switzerland to denounce the company¹s attempt to prevent poor people in India and in other developing countries accessing affordable generic medicines. The Novartis case against the Indian government will have huge impact on poor people in developing countries. According to the WHO, 30% of the world¹s population still do not have regular access to essential medicines. 74% of AIDS medicines are still under monopoly (under patents) and 77% of Africans still have no access to AIDS treatment. There are many reasons for this, however generic competition is essential in bringing the prices down and ensuring access to medicines for all. ³Access to medicines in developing countries relies primarily on affordable generic versions of patented medicines. Novartis¹ court action directly threatens the ability for developing countries to access these medicines for their people² said Julien Reinhard, director of the Health Campaign at Berne Declaration. The Indian legislation attacked by Novartis allows local companies to sell generic versions of the Novartis¹ cancer drug, Glivec®. Glivec® is 10 times more expensive than its generic equivalents. The Novartis Court action will have a much wider impact on other vital drugs for developing countries such as medicines for AIDS. It will also have an impact on developing countries that import generics from India. If Novartis is successful, it could jeopardize India¹s generic export industry. India is the world¹s leading exporter of generic medicines, with 67% of its exports going to developing countries. New HCWH Report: can hospitals cause asthma? October 28, 2006 2:34 AM

Please help spread the word about our new report, which shows that health care workers and patients in hospitals are at increased risk for asthma, due to common substances used in health care settings. Safer alternatives are available, and our new report shows how hospitals can clean up the indoor environment. Report is posted at www.noharm.org. Hard copies of the report are available by contacting Colleen Funkhouser, 703-243-0056, cfunkhouser@Hcwh.org. Press contact is Stacy Malkan, smalkan@Hcwh.org, 510-848-5343, ext. 105 Thanks! Stacy Malkan Communications Director Health Care Without Harm 510-848-5343, ext. 105 Health Care Without Harm News Release For Immediate Release: October 18, 2006 COMMON SUBSTANCES IN HOSPITALS CAN CONTRIBUTE TO ASTHMA, NEW REPORT SHOWS http://www.noharm.org/ Hospitals can reduce asthma risk by switching to safer alternatives Unbeknownst to many health care providers, the indoor hospital environment may be making people sick. A new report reveals that substances commonly found in hospitals - including chemicals used to clean floors and medical equipment, fumes from building materials, latex gloves, and other common substances - can trigger an asthma attack or cause the disease. The first-of-its-kind report, released today by Health Care Without Harm, presents rigorously researched information about asthma triggers and asthmagens found in health care settings, and shows how to reduce problematic exposures. "As places of healing, hospitals have a responsibility to protect patients and workers from harmful chemicals and practices. The good news is that safer alternatives are available. We urge hospitals to take immediate action to clean up the indoor environment," said Anna Gilmore Hall, RN, executive director of HCWH. Key findings in the report include: The current state of the evidence indicates considerable cause for concern that substances commonly used and found in health care can cause or trigger asthma. Top hazards of concern include latex and biological allergens; disinfectants, sterilants and cleaners; and formaldehyde, found in chemically-treated fabrics, carpets, pressed wood and other products. Some hazardous chemicals identified in the report are of particular concern for nurses, including the disinfectant glutaraldehyde and the sterilizing agent ethylene oxide. Safer alternatives are available. The report provides detailed information about how to find safer alternatives. Asthma is a public health crisis. In the U.S., the number of people with asthma has more than doubled over the last two decades. Asthma now costs the nation $16.1 billion annually in health care, loss of work productivity and premature death. Workplace exposures are a particular problem. Asthma is the most commonly reported workplace lung condition. An estimated 10-23% of all adult-onset asthma cases are due to workplace exposures. "Ironically many products used in health care to keep people safe from pathogens can cause or exacerbate asthma in susceptible people," said Ted Schettler, MD and science director of Science and Environmental Health Network. "Fortunately there are alternative products and practices that hospitals can use to accomplish their goals without increasing asthma risks." To obtain a copy of the report, see www.noharm.org or call 703-243-0056. Health Care Without Harm is an international coalition with 450 groups in 55 countries working to transform the health care industry so it is no longer a source of harm to people and the environment.  [ send green star]

Disability Issues In Topeka -- 2 events next week (KS) October 12, 2006 3:32 AM

Hello friends and members of Topeka Center for Peace and Justice, Concerned Citizens for Topeka, and Topeka's Human Relations Commission-- Topeka has two public events next week important to disability rights. First) City Council Tuesday evening. Second) A Town Hall Meeting Thursday evening. See details below. _______________________________________________________________ Tuesday: City Council At Tuesday's (Oct. 17) 6:00 p.m. City Council meeting, 214 SE 8th, an ordinance introduced by Council member John Nave will be considered that would put the City of Topeka into conformity with the state's equivalent to the Americans With Disabilities Act. The ordinance also clarifies the role of the city's Human Relations Commission in investigating discrimination complaints based on disability. Local citizens who support the rights of people with disabilities are encouraged to attend the meeting. Those who wish to also speak on the issue should leave their name with the City Clerks office (368-3940) by 5:00 p.m. Tuesday. Al Martin, Executive Director of the Human Relations Commission, who will be testifying for the ordinance, says "Our current ordinance is broken. This is our attempt to fix it, to avoid constitutional challenges to the ordinance. The ordinance will also allow the time for more professionally competent investigations of complaints." The Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed by the U.S. Congress in 1990. Kansas adopted the ADA provisions in the early 1990's. The ADA ensures equal opportunity for persons with disabilities in employment, State and local government services, businesses that are public accommodations or commercial facilities, and in transportation. The ADA also mandates the establishment of telephone relay services for people who use TTYs (teletypewriters, also known as TDDs or telecommunications devices for deaf persons). _____________________________________________________________________ Thursday: "Human Relations in Topeka: Inclusivity and Our Disabled Neighbors" The public is invited to a town hall meeting to give its input on discrimination and diversity in Topeka. "Human Relations in Topeka: Inclusivity and Our Disabled Neighbors" will be the subject of the Thursday, October 19th meeting, which will be held in the Prime-Time Room at the Kuehne Branch of the Topeka YMCA, 1936 NW Tyler, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The meeting is presented by the City of Topeka Human Relations Commission (HRC.) Topeka Independent Living Resource Center Executive Director Mike Oxford will speak on disability issues in the ordinance considered by the City Council Tuesday evening (see above event) and how the city could implement that ordinance (that puts Topeka in conformity with the state's equivalent of the Americans With Disabilities Act). A leader in the independent living movement for twenty years, Oxford currently serves on the Boards of the Disability Rights Center of Kansas, the Statewide Independent Living Council of Kansas and Atlantis Community in Denver, Colorado. He recently completed a two year term as President of the National Council on Independent Living. A question-and-answer period will follow Oxford's remarks. The meeting also will feature public comment on the HRC's mission and diversity in Topeka. HRC staff and commissioners also will provide information and welcome input on the HRC's 2007 budget, including the creation of an ADA Coordinator position. HRC staff also will explain the intake process for complaints, as well as outreach and education efforts. Reasonable accommodations must be requested by October 16th. For reasonable accommodations or further details, call the HRC at (785) 368-3606 or e-mail lhardesty@topeka.org. TTY phone number: (785) 368-3603. A Survey on Accessible Housing (India) September 30, 2006 8:29 AM

Disability Research and Design Foundation (DRDF) is a Bombay based NGO working towards making the built environment in the country accessible. DRDF was formed out of an initiative to bring together people of diverse expertise and interest to work towards common goals of universal access, disability rights and advocacy and inclusive society. A large part of this work is design related working on standards of accessibility with architects, designers and builders. Advocacy and rights based approach is used to address issues relating to accessible public places / housing for disabled persons. The aims and objects of DRDF are : · To promote and conduct research on issues / challenges / problems relating to design and access for persons with disabilities. · To disseminate / share / provide consultancy with regard to disability issues · To devise indigenous technological and design solutions in the fields of Universal Design / Architecture, Assistive Devices and Vehicular Design. · To build a comprehensible database of all the NGOs, institutions, professionals, advocacy and rights groups, working on disability related issues at the national or international levels. · To conduct advocacy and awareness programmes through access audits, film / documentaries and workshops. · To approach the various government authorities to ensure the implementation of the Disability Act and the various schemes that have been announced, and also for formulating additional schemes. · To network with organizations providing legal aid and ensure that the persons with disability benefit from this network as and when required. · To create awareness about the skills & creativity of persons with disabilities. · To extend whatever help and support possible to individuals with disability and other organizations working for the cause of disability. Project Accessible Housing for disabled persons Adequate housing is fundamental to survival and to living a dignified life with peace and security. Without adequate housing, employment is difficult to secure and maintain, physical and mental health is threatened, education is impeded, violence is more easily perpetrated, privacy is impaired and relationships are strained. The right to housing is codified as a human right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights: "Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control." (article 25(1)) Our own The Persons With Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, protection Of Rights And Full Participation) ACT, 1995 (PDA Act) section on Affirmative Action says: "The appropriate Governments and local authorities shall by notification frame schemes in favour of persons with disabilities, for the preferential allotment of land at concessional rates for - house;" and the recent UN Convention on Disability says Article 28 - Adequate Standard Of Living And Social Protection : 2. (d) To ensure access by persons with disabilities to public housing programmes; The adaptable and accessible housing standards need to be mandated. Its ten years since the PDA Act came into existence and nothing has been done for the housing needs of disabled persons. There is need to formulate an overall comprehensive plan which can provide a framework for future policy development and help ensure that the housing environment is responsive to all of the present and future needs of disabled persons. DRDF is initiating a project to understand the need of housing to be accessible: housing that enables people with disabilities to live their lives as independently as possible. Finding the right house or apartment requires attention to a myriad of details: affordability, location, aesthetics, overall floor space, and more. People with disabilities face the same considerations, but as important as they are, they are overshadowed by the commercial demands of the builders and architects. There is a need to balance issues of needs of disabled persons versus the commercial aspects of profits and viability of builders. Both these aspects can be balanced by an effective housing policy initiated by the Government. Incorporating disability considerations in our research and teaching will require substantial effort of individuals with disabilities and their families who could help us in documenting their needs in accessible housing. We request your complete co-operation. Please email the completed questionnaire to drdf.bombay@gmail.com or send it by post to : Disability Research and Design Foundation (DRDF) Abhishek Ray B-124, Greenfield Tower Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road Andheri ( East) Mumbai- 400093 INDIA Please forward this email to all your friends and groups so that we can understand the needs of maximum persons. I'm 40, widowed, and a single parent of an Autistic child. His offical diagnosis is Autism Spectrum Disorder, but he acts so much like an Asperger's Syndrome child. He has violent rages as well, but thankfully the Zoloft has helped that a great deal. He's constantly struggling for power over me, more so than most children. I suppose it's due to the fact he doesn't feel he has control over his own world most of the time. I'm not sure if he's also suffering from ODD, or if it's just part of the Autism. Before my son was born I taught preschool for over 5 years. I also had worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for two years. My son and I both have an Auditory Processing Problem. I'm also dealing with ADD. Either way, there's rarely a dull moment at my house. LOL. Invitation to Disability Caucus of Green Party, US April 26, 2006 5:56 AM

Invitation to Join the Disability Caucus of the Green Party The Disability Caucus is an Identity Caucus of the United States Green Party. Once we are accredited, we will have the same status as state parties do within the Green Party (except that we can not cast a vote for our Presidential nominee). There are several other Identity Caucuses, including Black, Latino, Women, and Lavender. Verified Members: Please join us by becoming a verified member aka a voting member. We need 100 verified members, spread out over at least 15 states, in order to be accredited as a Caucus. As of September 2004, we have 84 people in 23 states. To be a verified member you must meet the following requirements: 1. Be registered to vote as a Green in your US State; OR (if your state does not have a Green Party or you are not eligible to vote) be connected to the Green Party in some tangible way (fairly flexible). 2. Be a person with a disability. We may allow some non-disabled voting members but so far have not made that decision. 3. Agree to follow major discussions and participate in votes. 4. Send your information to our Membership Committee at greencaucus@.... We will need your legal name, snail mail address, email address, phone number, date of birth, connection to the Green Party (are you registered Green?), and if you are disabled or a friend of the disabled community. This information is for internal Green Party use only and will not be made public. If you are joining as an adjunct member (a nonvoting friend of the Caucus), please let the membership committee know. If you aren't sure if you want to become a verified member, just let them know that too. Adjunct Members: If you do not qualify as a verified (voting) member but want to be part of the Caucus, we welcome you to join the mailing list and participate in the discussions. Please let the Membership Committee know who you are and that you are an adjunct member. We require your real name and a brief description of why you are here. Adjunct members include people living outside the United States, those whose hearts are Green but who are not part of the Green Party at this time, and people who are not themselves disabled (or do not qualify if we offer expanded membership). Disabled Greens Mailing List: Our discussions and votes take place on the Disabled Greens mailing list. If possible, please join this list. We average 1-4 messages a day, but this can vary a lot. The list is to discuss Caucus business and Related activism work only. We are not a disability support group. To join the Disabled Greens mailing list: Please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/disabledgreens/ Or send email to disabledgreens-subscribe@yahoogroups.com For more information, contact Cyndi Norman at cyndi@... Disabled Greens Votes Mailing List: This is an announcement list for official caucus business only (no discussion). This is where votes and other important items will go. Only the list moderators can post. Nothing will go here that won't also be on Disabled Greens. If you do not have the energy to keep up with the regular Disabled Greens list, you can join Disabled Greens Votes to make sure you won't miss anything important. If you join this list, please also join Disabled Greens as at least a Special Notices subscriber so you will be able to read posts on the webpage (or switch back to receiving posts) when you wish to follow a Particular discussion. To join the Disabled Greens Votes mailing list: Please go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/disabledgreensvotes Or send email to disabledgreens-subscribe@yahoogroups.com For more information, contact Cyndi Norman at cyndi@... Here's some groups for ADA, diffability rights, news and views, et al :) February 04, 2006 5:28 PM

Dear All, Hello. Here's some groups for ADA, diffability rights, news and views, et al. U.S. :) ADA-EMPOWERMENT · Empowering people with disabilities by using the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the purposeful mission of this list. Description :) Empowering people with disabilities by using the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is the purposeful mission of this list. This list will discuss all titles of the ADA, which are: Title 1: Employment, Title 2: State and Local Government Activities, Title 2: Public Transportation, Title 3: Public Acommodations and Title 4: Telecommunications. Another important thing that will be clarified on this list is the three prong definition of the ADA, which are: past, present and preceived disability. Also, what is a qualified disability under the ADA will be clarified for the members of this list. This is a list where anyone can get vital informaton on the ADA, share ideas to force ADA compliance with businesses and other identities in the world today. We will also talk about legislative updates to the ADA and reflect on what these updates mean to people with disabilities ability to gain equal access in the world. The ADA is a very empowering law that people with disabilities are using as a tool in the forefront of the Disabilities Civil Rights Movement. Group Email Addresses :) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ADA-EMPOWERMENT/ Post message: ADA-EMPOWERMENT@yahoogroups.com Subscribe: ADA-EMPOWERMENT-subscribe@yahoogroups.com ADA_LAW_IMPACT · THE ADA LAW IMPACT DISCUSSION GROUP Description :) This is a group to discuss disability information. The primary focus is the LAW of disability ADA, 504, IDEA, The Rehabilitation Act, but it is also a medium to encourage networking and empowerment of people with disabilities. The 11 commandment -on this list- is no flaming of posters. We can agree and also disagree. The emphasis is discussion of disability issues in a positive manner. Group Email Addresses :) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ADA_LAW_IMPACT/ Post message: ADA_LAW_IMPACT@yahoogroups.com Subscribe: ADA_LAW_IMPACT-subscribe@yahoogroups.com Advocates_For_People_With_Diffabilities · diffability issues Description :) This is a list to keep abreast of ADA issues. Post news, question issues, answer queries, but do not flame or you are INSTANTLY gone. Activism is strongly encouraged. We will work together and appreciate each others differences. Support for each other is expected and appreciated. This is not a place to judge each other. This is a place to empower each other. If you can be part of a movement that puts the "whole" above the "individual", you are welcome here. Please do not forward people's personal comments or words or any parts of list conversation. News, notices and URLs are free for the taking. Also, please do not post parts of conversation from other lists. We try to make the people aware of the needs and laws of the disabled. We share newsletters and discuss them. Our members are kept well informed. We also try to assist each other to the best of our abilities. We welcome members who are either disabled with any disability, caregiver, advocate, professional or non-disabled. Our members are welcome from throughout the United States and Worldwide. We have our own archives, chatroom, photo albums, link sites and polls. Feel free to research or add to any of these resources. This group was founded on July 5, 2002. The reason I founded it was because of the horrible manner other people and myself were being treated in other groups. I decided I wanted to help others as much as I could so my group would not be like the others and that I would treat others the way I would want to be treated... Green Party's Disability Caucus Launches Site for Katrina Survivors With Disabilities September 26, 2005 11:40 AM

Green Party's Disability Caucus Launches Site for Katrina Survivors With Disabilities   http://www.gp.org/press/pr_2005_09_16.shtml Friday, September 16, 2005 Contacts:Scott McLarty, Media Coordinator, 202-518-5624, mclarty@...Starlene Rankin, Media Coordinator, 916-995-3805, starlene@...Cyndi Norwitz, Disability Caucus, 707-775-4475, cyndi@... WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Disability Caucus of the Green Party of the UnitedStates has launched a web site to aid survivors of Hurricane Katrina whohave disabilities. The site, located at <http://immuneweb.org/katrina>, includes guides for"Providing Shelter for People with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity" and"Providing Shelter for People with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome &Fibromyalgia," as well as contact information for Caucus members willing toprovide housing for survivors or consulting services for shelters andprograms serving survivors with disabilities. "The intent of this site is not to duplicate the fine work being doneelsewhere, but rather to supplement it," said Cyndi Norwitz, CaliforniaGreen and founder of the Disability Caucus. "There are several other pageson serving Katrina survivors with disabilities but I was struck inparticular by the lack of information on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity --my own disability -- which can be hard to accommodate." "We know from September 11th that when rescue workers and residents areexposed to toxins during and following a disaster, that even the healthyones can be disabled for life," added Ms. Norwitz. "Far too many September11th survivors still have asthma or pain or neurological impairmentsbecause of the chemicals in the air and dust, and many had to stopworking. How many Katrina survivors will suffer the same fate?" Greens and numerous scientists have detailed the toxicity of the NewOrleans environment in the wake of Katrina. Louisiana Greens have stronglycriticized current plans for detoxification, calling them inadequate toensure a safe environment and public health<http://www.gp.org/press/states/la_2005_09_08.shtml>. But Greens called the toxic danger to residents, rescue workers, andcleanup crews only one of many concerns for Katrina survivors who havedifferent kinds of disability. "When I've talked to shelter workers they've told me 'we don't have anypeople with disabilities here.' People with obvious disabilities likeserious mobility impairment or blindness have probably gone to specialtyshelters. But what about people with less obvious or hidden disabilities? Are they too embarrassed to ask for special help? Are they afraid ofdiscrimination, such as someone with AIDS might be subjected to? Are theyjust getting by and don't want to be any trouble?" asked Ms. Norwitz. "Mental and or emotional disabilities are hidden disabilities. It is oftendifficult for people to speak out honestly and ask for what they need,"noted Judith Grant, Disability Caucus member from California. "For AIDS patients, relocation to the wrong area could mean a deathsentence, if patients must contend with poor AIDS services, medicationinterruption, a need for new HIV cocktails, or struggles with strainresistance," said David M. Silva, a Disability Caucus member living withAIDS in California. Disability Caucus members stressed the importance of hurricane survivors, regardless of disability, continuing their previous treatments, includingalternative and complementary care, and warned of insurance company and HMOobstructions to medical access. "Medications need to be more readily madeavailable for diabetes, seizure disorders, mental health illness, and anyother illnesses that are visible or invisible disabilities," said IreneMartinez, member of the D.C. Statehood Green Party and Disability Caucusmember who has worked on the Americans with Disabilities Act. "Katrina proves that the U.S. needs expanded access to health care under anational health insurance plan more than ever," said Jody Grage Haug,co-chair of the Green Party of the United States. The Disability Caucus, one of several identity caucuses in the Green Party,is in the process of gaining formal accreditation with the party, afterwhich it will be given a vote in the party's National Committee. The Black,Women's, and Lavender Caucuses have already achieved accreditation. MORE INFORMATION Green Party of the United Stateshttp://www.gp.org <http://www.gp.org/>1700 Connecticut Avenue NW, Suite 404Washington, DC 20009.202-319-7191, 866-41GREENFax 202-319-7193 Disability Caucus of the Green Party of the United Stateshttp://immuneweb.org/dg/ Resources for People with Disabilities Displaced by Hurrican Katrinahttp://immuneweb.org/katrina    [ send green star]

are experiencing tremendous loss of life and devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. Current data indicates that people with disabilities are now most at risk in this situation-and will need recovery assistance for months or years. A disproportionate number of theHurricanesurvivors are people with disabilities whose needs for basicnecessitiesarecompounded by chronic health conditions and functional impairments. For example: In Biloxi, Mississippi, a city of about 50,000 people, 26 percent ofresidents are people with disabilities. This means that there are10,700people with disabilities 5 years of age and older who live in Biloxi. In Mobile, Alabama, a city of 198,915 people, 24 percent of theresidentsare people with disabilities. This means that there are 43,000 peoplewithdisabilities 5 years of age and older who live in Mobile. In New Orleans, a city of about 484,000 people, 23.2 percent ofresidentsare people with disabilities. This means that there are 102,122peoplewithdisabilities 5 years of age and older who live in New Orleans. Who are the 102,122 people with disabilities who live in New Orleans?About10 percent (or 12,000) of them are people ages 5 to 20 years old; 61percent(or 63,000) of them are aged 21 to 64 years old; and 29 percent (or27,000)of the people are 65 years of age and older. The 102,122 people with disabilities living in New Orleans includepeoplewho are blind, people who are deaf, people who use wheelchairs, canes, walkers, crutches, people with service animals, and people with mentalhealth needs. At least half of the people with disabilities in NewOrleanswho are of working age are not employed. Many of the people rely on avariety of government programs such as Supplemental Security IncomeandMedicaid to help them meet their daily service and support needs. Implications The total destruction of the physical environment and public/privateinfrastructure and communications systems in the Gulf Coastal areasaffectedby Hurricane Katrina has life-threatening implications for allcitizenswithdisabilities, and those without disabilities. The implications forthesepeople include: 7 for people with physical disabilities and who are over 65yearsofage, being unable to leave their homes, group homes, nursing homes, hospitals without significant assistance; 7 for all people with disabilities, being prevented from usinganytype of accessible public transportation which in all likelihood donotexist anymore; 7 for people who are blind, being unable to even get around intheirown flooded neighborhoods because they can no longer navigate theenvironmental landscape; 7 for all people with disabilities driven by floods frominstitutionsor group homes or nursing homes, needing to be housed in less thansatisfactory conditions with considerably less than the necessaryrange ofservices and supports they need for an indeterminate amount of time; 7 for people with disabilities who have service animals, areunableto rely on those animals outside of the house or group home becausetheseanimals cannot navigate safely in the flooded streets; 7 for people who are deaf, being challenged to access emergencyinformation through television, radio, TTY, etc. because publiccommunications systems are somewhat compromised; 7 for all people with disabilities, being unable to securelife-saving food and water because many of them are trapped within theconfines of inadequate supplied shelters, stadiums, etc.; and 7 people may have lost or become separated from the drugs theyrelyon daily for diabetes, heart disease and other chronic ailments.Pharmaciesin the affected areas may have insufficient stocks of vital drugs likeinsulin for diabetics, creating a need to organize efforts to importanddistribute essential medicines in the area. In addition, manypharmacieshave been raided by looters.     ADAPT: Hurricane Assistance to the CILs and people with disabilitiesMy prayers go out to everyone in the lower 48 as we know it. Now I'vebeenwatching the news both in southern Canada as well as the differentones in thelower 48. Are there any survivors with disabilities and whataccomodations arethey getting if any. Take Action to Prevent Medical BankruptcyDear James M, While fighting the Medicaid budget cuts and caps proposed by thePresident has become a near-full time job for us, we are working onother issues in Congress as well. One of them is S. 256, theBankruptcy Reform bill, which would make it harder for averageAmericans in financial distress to receive help through the bankruptcyprocess. This bill is especially harmful because nearly half of allbankruptcies in America are caused by medical bills. To ease the harmful effects of this bill for those who must declarebankruptcy for medical reasons, Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) willintroduce several amendments to the bill next week. These may includelimiting how much hospitals can charge those individuals,Medicare prescription drug negotiation authority for the federalgovernment, drug reimportation, and other measures to deal with therising costs of health care. Take Action Now! *  Call your Senators to oppose making it harder for Americanswith high medical bills to declare bankruptcy. Fwd: Bush Budget Proposes Halt in Housing Aid for Disabled February 23, 2005 3:55 AM

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/22/nyregion/22housing.html?pagewanted=print&position=http://duckdaotsu.blogspot.com/2005/02/Bush-Budget-Proposes-Halt-in-Housing-Aid-for-Disabled *Bush Budget Proposes Halt in Housing Aid for Disabled* With little fanfare, the Bush administration is proposing to stopfinancing the construction of new housing for the mentally ill andphysically handicapped as part of a 50 percent cut in its housing budgetfor people with disabilities. The proposal, which has been overshadowed by the administration's plansto shrink its community development programs, affects what is known asthe Section 811 program. Since 1998, Section 811 has helped nonprofitdevelopers produce more than 11,000 units of housing for low-incomepeople with disabilities, including more than 700 in New York State. Until now, Section 811 has provided equal amounts each year, roughly, for financing for new construction, and rent subsidies for disabledtenants. But under the 2006 budget proposal, the capital allocationwould be eliminated and the overall budget would shrink by half, to $120million from $238 million. The Department of Housing and Urban Development did not respond torepeated requests for comment over the last week. But the proposalappears to comport with the administration's broader determination totrim domestic programs in the face of record deficits. The proposal is reminiscent, though on a much smaller scale, of whathappened to public housing decades ago. That was when the federalgovernment retreated from building public housing in favor of providingvouchers under programs like Section 8, which allows poor tenants toredeem those vouchers with private landlords. This time, the federal government would discontinue financing housingfor people with spinal cord injuries or psychiatric illnesses who arenot necessarily homeless but may live in nursing homes or psychiatrichospitals. By relying exclusively on vouchers, the federal government wouldessentially be lumping these people with able-bodied Section 8recipients in competing for some of the same apartments. "What you have for disabled folks is you're getting a double whammy,"said Jonathan Harwitz, director of public policy for the Corporation forSupportive Housing, which promotes housing for people with specialneeds. "You're looking at both the landlord making a decision, 'Do Ieven want to rely on Section 8?' and secondly, saying, 'Do I want adisabled person in here?' Because that's an additional issue." Section 811 has existed for three decades, first as part of the Section202 program for the elderly, and then, starting in the 1990's, as itsown program. Since 1998, HUD has awarded $83 million to New York State, out of $1 billion nationwide, to nonprofits, according to the TechnicalAssistance Collaborative, a national advocacy group. In New York City, going back to the early 1980's, 522 Section 811 unitshave been developed on city-owned sites that were sold to nonprofitdevelopers for nominal amounts, said Carol Abrams, a spokeswoman for theDepartment of Housing Preservation and Development. An additional 52units are under construction. One nonprofit group that has benefited from Section 811 is the Bridge, anonprofit mental health rehabilitation agency. The agency has finishedeight such projects since 1979 and has three more on the way, which willserve 231 clients in Manhattan and the Bronx. If the capital financing is eliminated, however, the agency would haveto compete with more established housing groups in the future to raiseprivate funds to build any additional housing. And that, said Dr. PeterD. Beitchman, its executive director, would be a major challenge. To Andrew Sperling, director of legislative advocacy for the NationalAlliance for the Mentally Ill, the administration's proposal isespecially disappointing because HUD unveiled new guidelines this monthto give people with disabilities more time to find accessible andaffordable housing. February 22, 2005 By DAVID W. "Calcutta India, Challenged: moving ahead: 5 steps to build better life" August 30, 2004 5:27 PM

"Calcutta India, Challenged but moving ahead 5 steps to build better life Submitted by: EDward A. Carraway Ambassador: National Disability Party The Telegraph - Calcutta : Metro http://www.telegraphindia.com/1040821/asp/calcutta/story_3641928.asp Challenged, but moving ahead A STAFF REPORTER Sudam and Jeeja: Resolute voices. Picture by Aranya Sen Awareness, access, education, employment and legislation — five simple steps to build a better life for people with disabilities. But more often than not, these basic rights have to be fought for. It was to give them a platform to express their views that two organisations from different parts of the country came together in Calcutta on August 17 and 18. “The problem is that people with cerebral palsy have no separate identity. In the disability act, cerebral palsy falls under the locomotive handicap segment. We are marginalised even within the disability sector. The aim of this workshop was to talk about the rights of people with neurological disorders, create a common advocacy group and an action plan,†stressed Jeeja Ghosh, speaking slowly but surely from her wheelchair. “We have to break the myth that people with cerebral palsy are mentally retarded,†she insisted, setting the tone for the two-day seminar at the Indian Institute of Cerebral Palsy (IICP). Held by Ankur, IICP’s advocacy group for adults, in collaboration with Ektha, a Chennai-based consortium of people with cerebral palsy, autism, mental retardation and multiple-disability, participants included those with neurological disorders, parents and professionals from NGOs like MentAid and Reach. They came from all over the eastern region, Shillong to Mizoram, Jamshedpur to Jharkhand and Cooch Behar. Although attended on the first day by police commissioner Sujoy Chakraborty and chairperson of the West Bengal Commission for Women Jasodhara Bagchi, the spotlight was on people with disabilities presenting papers on five issues important to them and action plans. There was also an election, where two representatives from the region — Sudam Pal and Jeeja from IICP — were elected. They will take part in the national seminar in Delhi on September 12. Ektha’s four-city tour will move to Mumbai next, and end in Delhi. “The purpose is to devise regional action plans, to carry forward the movement in our areas. Ankur, in fact, has done several community interaction workshops using theatre to spread our message last year in different places. We talked about continuing with it,†added Jeeja, coordinator of Ankur. The event was as much an exchange of ideas as of emotions and opinions. Relationships between people with disabilities and their parents and professionals, the problems and successes were all part of the discussion, as was the fact that more pro-active measures were needed from the government. “We have to unite and form a core group to spread the word,†summed up Jeeja."  [ send green star]

"Different Abled not Disabled" August 05, 2004 1:34 AM

"Different Abled not Disabled Hi, Spent all night and much of this morning reading your Psychiatric Rights arguments and references and I must say like Whitaker, you are a thorough and potent force for clarity and justice through facts. Well done and thank-you for your service to humanity. Still I believe you like Whitaker are not going to change belief with just the facts. My earlier point was that Whitaker couldn't even change Whitaker with the facts - that in his HEART he stilled believed that some folks are severely mentally ill and in need of benefiting from the very toxins he just debunked. Let me quote from your own work " legal protections for people diagnosed as mentally ill are not worth the paper they are written on". Yes I understand that you are mounting a huge effort to change this. My view is that if a few laws do get changed and the courts open up to the facts you are presenting that the experience of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi proved that facts and laws alone are not enough to stop the abuse of the people for profit. The British Empire in India and the native ruling class ran on the backs of the so-called coolie or the less than class peoples. The British thought of them as expendable the "enlightened" HIndu upper class thought it their "karma" the untouchables were paying off. Very similar to how they tell me my schizophrenia comes from my genetic "karma" if you will. Gandhi, like you a barrister for civil rights, fought the South African system long and hard through the courts to gain rights for the brutalized peoples. Through that failure he decided to engage a new type of action that he called satyagraha - sat meaning truth and graha meaning to grasp firmly. He brought this new belief back to India where he abandoned the rule of law and went after the public heart. His cause became the primarily the cause of the so-called untouchables who he called Harijans or God's Kids. He dressed in only one piece of cloth as they did, He ate the same minimal amount of food as they did. The African people were brought to American in order for the ruling class to make money. The average colonist had no plantation. I submit that this multi-BILLION dollar so-called mental health industry plays to present power just like the cotton and tobacco raising did in the past. Its not just big pharma but even the money whitaker, you the money Will and Orxy is skimming off from Freedom Center for personal gain framed as service work. You mention the great legal campaign of Thurgood Marshal. Well I never went to high school because I was in institutions but even running on my GED I know that those laws meant nothing until King and others followed Gandhi and took to the streets and brought the issues into the public heart. I remember also the Supreme Court Justice John Marshall. I remember the destruction of the psyche, bodies and lands of the Cherokee, Choctaw and so many others. President Andrew Jackson was responsible for the notorious Indian Removal Act of 1830, and thus the Trail of Tears in unconstitutional defiance of a John Marshals Supreme Court ruling. You may say that jurisprudence has changed since Marshall and Marshall - I say we just had a Supreme Court steal the votes of the same disenfranchised people. I believe in learning from how the Eastern Woodland natives got screwed even when they won their rights in the highest Court of the land. I think King was wise to go to the streets and raise up the hearts of the American people like Gandhi before him. My view is that Gandhi's Satyagraha of firmly hanging on to truth is not the truth just of facts. Sat - the Hindu sanskrit word for truth is more like the Judeo, Muslim, Christian of what Mosher called Soteria or power of healing. We need more than the facts, more than laws, we need to muster the hearts of the people that like myself, can't really follow the facts of you and Whitaker, Szazs and other ALLIES. We need Gandhi's that will not call us Untouchable psychiatric cases in need of rights but Harijans or God's Kids just like everyone else. We need Martin Luther King's that will speak of us as not being DIFFERENT not being Other. I believe that what we need to do is make sure that no one gets labeled rather than getting psychiatric rights once we are. Will suggests speaking up regarding allies points of view is divide and conquer. I believe the labels are what divide us and the toxins are what are conquering us. We need to organize without labels and allies and co-founders. We need to think of non-professional people power grasping and holding on to the truth that we can think and feel different without being branded by disabling labels then having to 'fight" for rights under these so- called disabilities. We are DIFFERENT ABLED not Dis- Abled. We have Goddess Given INALIENABLE RIGHTS and need for so-called Psychiatric "rights" is "wrong" or rather is wronging us. I feel we who have been so-labeled have been so sorely abused that we have a "slave" consciousness. That if the master calls us psychiatric we must then apply that label to our sense of self in order to gain our rights that were taken away by the label in the first place? . Again like Gandhi seeing the put-upon not as untouchables but as God's Kids it is time we name ourselves with a better name than survivor, psychiatric rights advocate, consumer. Maybe HUMAN RIGHTS not psychiatric rights. Who knows maybe our differences that are being labeled as illness may in fact be a new gift to humanity. Maybe hearing voices, the ability to endure altered states, or emotional sensitivity - if celebrated and not pathologized might become an asset to all beings being treated so harshly by the status quo. Some feel that the lack of human, animal and even plant rights (like the rain-forest) may be causing the extinction of life. Maybe we the so-called mentally ill- if we take our own experiences and frame them as gifts - we might in fact be God's Kid's here to help the planet. This idea that science has no idea what so-called sanity might be or not be is brought out beautifully in Science Writer John Horgan's book on the failings of neuroscience in The Undiscovered Mind. www.johnhorgan.org . Jim you might add his work to your list of mental illness science debunkers. peace. David Baker "  [ send green star]

"ADAPT's Ten Worst list is based on a combination of statistics the states report to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid which are then collated by the Medstat group; the 2004 National Study of Disability Finance from the University of Colorado Department of Psychiatry; and an informal survey of persons with disabilities, advocates and state personnel on their states services. The rankings weighed the ratio of institutional spending to community spending, the per capita spending on nursing homes and community and ICFs-MR, and the overall spending on community long term care. Members of # 1 Mississippis ADAPT chapter met with their Governor, Haley Barbour, offering to work with him to create a real home and community based services system in Mississippi so that their state wouldn't always be in the top ten worst. Gov. Barbour will be presented with the First Worst wreath of lemons and dinosaurs once he returns to Mississippi. The Governors of the next nine states will receive visors with their states picture, rank, the Governors name, and a lemon and a dinosaur. After the Ten Worst press conference, ADAPT marched to the regional Housing and Urban Development (HUD) office as a follow-up to the May 26 National Housing Justice Memorial Day (NHJMD). Before everyone had lined up in front of the building, HUD Regional Director John Myers was out on the street agreeing to fax the NHJMD demands to HUD Secretary Alphonzo Jackson. The four demands are aimed at preventing any reduction in funding or the number of Section 8 vouchers available, keeping the Section 8 program in its current form with adequate funding, requiring impact studies for any proposed changes, and especially assuring input from the grassroots on any proposed changes. "Our main objective here in Seattle was convincing the NGA to pass our resolution calling for long term care reform that allows people to choose to receive long term care services in their own home", said Beto Barrera of Chicago ADAPT and the Disability Rights Action Coalition for Housing (DRACH). "However, as we begin to free more people from institutional settings, they are going to need affordable accessible housing, and thats where HUD comes in". Discussion on Diffability, et al :) July 23, 2004 7:18 PM

This Discussion Thread will be on all Diffability issues, and all that relates, et al; all are welcome to post :) "Subject: Article 13 Thanks Lily and others. I am doing some e-mail work on the issue of a right to a means of communication (as opposed to the right to use it once you have it) and there is considerable international interest in ensuring that this matter is on the agenda at the UN. I have also spoken to two people who teach international law and they confirmed my view that the right to use is not the right to access/learn - in simple terms you can use sign language or another communication aid if you happen to have the knowledge or access but, so far, there is no requirement that you be provided with these things even if you need them. The International Committee of the International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication is working on it but if the issue can be raised at each meeting around Australia it will help. I am also trying to get in touch with someone who helped to draft the UN Convention on the rights of the child to see if he can offer some advice. Anyone who wants help in raising this issue please don't hesitate to get in touch and I'll do what I can, Cath, "Cath Gunn" To visit your group on the web, go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DisabilityDialogue/ "  [ send green star]
