The various figures now called dragons probably have no single origin, but were spontaneously envisioned in several different cultures around the world, based loosely on the appearance of a snake and possibly fossilizeddinosaur and Tertiary mammal megafauna remains.
They are commonly portrayed as serpentine or reptilian, hatching from eggs and possessing long, typically scaly, bodies; dragons are often (but not always) portrayed with wings and a fiery breath.
Although dragons (or dragon-like creatures) occur commonly in legends around the world, different cultures have perceived them differently. Chinese dragons (Simplified Chinese: 龙; Traditional Chinese: 龍; Pinyin: lóng), and Eastern dragons generally, are usually seen as benevolent, whereas European dragons are usually malevolent (there are of course exceptions to these rules). Malevolent dragons also occur in Persian mythology (see Azhi Dahaka) and other cultures.
Dragons are often held to have major spiritual significance in various religions and cultures around the world. In many oriental cultures dragons were, and in some cultures still are, revered as representative of the primal forces of nature and the universe. They are associated with wisdom—often said to be wiser than humans—and longevity. They are commonly said to possess some form of magic or other supernatural power. In some cultures, they are said to be capable of human speech.
Dragons are very popular characters in fantasy literature and video games today, especially in role-playing games. The term dragoon, for infantry that move around by horse, yet still fight as foot soldiers, is derived from their early firearm, the "dragon", a wide-bore musket that spit flame when it fired, and was thus named for the mythical beast.
In case you didn't know, Green Dragon's are intimately connected with nature and like to hang out in trees. If you traverse to
http://www.angelfire.com/trek/wildside/Fantasy.html
You will learn (among other things) all about Green Dragon's and even find out how to discover your own inner Dragon.
BTW, I am sick and tired of the kind of thinking which tries to explain away the mythic & mystical vision of humankind by assuming that one's belief in something is tied to a material cause. I mean linking the wide spread concept of dragons with the tangible evidence of reptiles & fossils. Hah!
Hugs,

As the rays of the life-giving Sun, your Dragon color is...
Your Inner Dragon is the most interesting of all. Yellows are the fourth rarest dragon of all (after Gold, Platinum and Chromatic dragons). They spend the vast majority of their time soaring high above the ground, often for no particular reason. They love to be in the air, and are thus typified as the Air Elemental dragon. Your Inner Dragon spends most of his/her time on the Plains or steppe highlands when not mingled with the air currents. All of the Elemental dragons are technically aligned "Chaotic Evil" but a Yellow is about as close as they come to being either Neutral or "Lawful Evil." So if you feel like a bit of a do-gooder sometimes, it's perfectly normal.
You like to spend time in silent, aerial meditation and would only really attack someone if provoked. Your favorable attributes are the sunrise, Spring, incense, clouds, and any kind of helpful air mass or current. When it's needed, your breath weapon is pure bolts of Lightning. How's that for a neat piece of carry-on luggage? See you amongst the clouds!
The Welsh Flag with the dragon of Wales May 31, 2006 3:54 PM
For those of you who dont know me, I am Welsh, here is a little info on my countries flag.
Some say that the Red Dragon was originally a griffin on the standard of a Roman legion headquartered in North Wales, but early came to be associated with the fighting dragons imprisoned by Lludd and Llefelys. The significance of these dragons was pointed out by Myrddin, the Merlin of Arthurian legend. Two dragons, one white, one red, had fought for many years. The white dragon at first prevailed but in the end the red dragon overcame the white. Myrddin explained that the Welsh would ultimately, after a long period of adversity, overcome the foreign invaders, and maintain their language, lands and freedom. Perhaps that is why the Welsh chose the red dragon
In any case the dragon has become a symbol identified with Wales. A legend recorded by an 8th century historian tells of a fight between a red and a white dragon, which ends with the eventual triumph of the red dragon - representing Wales.

The Dragon and The Lady
A lady,
a passionate tired, heart sore knight and an evil dragon
once met upon the plains
in the dragons pouch the lady fairs, dark haired daughter.
The knight - in dented tarnished armor - tho gallant and brave scared and battered but in love with the lady tho not ever wanting her to know - demanding the dragon to release the child.
But the Evil Dragon - a formidable foe threw back his black haired head - blue eyes rolling, laughed madly.
I promise you oh green eyed lady love lost, that since you betrayed and left me spurned, our fairy child is mine.
Therefore, you shall know my wrath and a slow painful lonely death. I will make you weep and quiver --- you shall plead for my mercy.
so saying --- tail whipping -- the child child clutched in his clawed hand with iridescent wings spread wide - fire rolling from his snout -- salivia dripping from his jaw
he rose -- rising higher --- to tower over and to shake the fearless maiden as he vanished.
Weary and desperate, -- head bent and tears glistening on damp cheeks -- slipping to moisten pale lips --the lady cast beseeching eyes upon the gallant knight as he -- in all his splendor lay flowers upon her skirt.
Fear not my love, --- all is not lost -- for we as a team shall vanquish my lord dragon and win free your lovely daughter.
But kind sir, as much as I appreciate your gesture you know he has years of history and nourishment of me
he knows my soul --- I was his lady wife.
Smile softly, for destroy you he cannot --- you told me the tale and I came to offer you me.
Rest gently upon my lap for I will cherish - love - and protect you.
We will find a way to win -- the fair child shall be yours --
tho she is of his lions -- she is of your heart and he will not harm her

Temperance is for you to show peticents. That sometime opposits of the spectrume can manage to get along, compromise and make happiness.
The Star is that light within us that shines so bright it will knock out any evil or darkness that may show it self to you. The Star never lets go of Hope.
The Moon tells us of decite, but to never let go of one's dreams. To listen to that inner guidance from the heart as well as the gut and you'll never let yourself down.
The Sun is another reminder of your hearts light it stronger then anything else. The Sun ask's you to remember when before you set Judgment on anyone. To never let go of that child like feeling you have had in the past. It is here to remind you that your flame is stronger then any one elses. And because of that you'll be successfull at anything you put your mind to.
There are a number of dragon books out on the market -- mostly (of course) for children -- but the reading of a few are actually great for the adults too -- author's - Chritine Funke -- Chris D'Lacy have marvelous tales. Funke's book tells about the last dragon -- why he is the last - his adventure of flying to asia to find anyother dragons etc...
Was absolutely not able to get into Christopher Paolini's Eragon (not rushing off to buy the sequel either) but the covers are really interesting. Great pictures -- are there any good morning dragons hiding around here?

As the Oceans that give birth to the Land, your Dragon color is...
If there ever was a draconic example of a supple attitude, your Inner Dragon is it. Blues are the Water Elemental dragon - typified by their Steam breath weapon. Pretty creative, huh? It goes right along with your Inner Dragon's tendency to maim, but not destroy. Much like your native oceans and rivers will deform the rock over time, eventually wearing it away to nothing.
Humans shouldn't make the idiot mistake of thinking you're weak, however. After all you're a good 30 feet in length and you have a penchant for materializing out of any body of water, no matter how small. The element of surprise and limited magic capabilities are definitely yours. You also enjoy communicating with aquatic life-forms, hunting in totally inhospitable terrain (i.e. 3000 feet below the waves), and using your fluid nature to your advantage. Your enemies probably won't even see you approach in the first place. Your favorable attributes are the sunset, Autumn, water, compassion, peace, forgiveness, love, intuition, and calmness. Naturally, you pity the fool who'd try and prove that calmness part, he'd probably wind up being scalded.
Your Inner Dragon is the classic example of dragon evil. Remember Smaug? Yep, Red Dragon. Oh, my friend you're in good company. Red dragons are the most vile and crafty of all the dragons. They are also the most dangerous of all dragons. As such they are the Fire Elemental dragons. Reds have a nasty tendency towards luring you in with quiet words and soft emotions, then wrapping their scaly tails around you and biting off your puny little human head. Fun, no?
But of course, Reds aren't all about killing and treasure hoarding. You like to invent creative traps, spend long hours relaxing in the mouths of volcanoes, fly over the vast forests of the planet looking for men on horseback ...er... sheep (yeah...), and pick fights. Your favorable attributes are Noon, Summer, the sword, helpful fire, blood, courage, passion, will power, and leadership. If dragons went to war, they'd rally behind you in a snap. Well, you or a Copper Dragon. But those guys are wusses anyway, and you could beat one up to take command. In fact, you probably would considering your breath weapon is good old fashioned Fire, and plenty of it. Just remember that some sheep carry swords and you'll do fine.
As the Mist that shrouds both Good and Evil, your Dragon color is...
Your Inner Dragon is to dragons what the Ranger is to humans. Silvers are one of three types of metallic dragon, the others being Gold and Copper. Like all metallics, Silvers rigidly adhere to an internal code of conduct. Unlike the other two metallics, however, this code is not universal. Each Silver must develop their code individually, a fact which explains their unique dispositions and actions. Silvers are often considered outcasts or shadows dwelling on the periphery of dragon culture (much like human Rangers), but they can always be counted upon to speak the truth and help their allies. Because no one but a Silver knows what they'll do next, their alignment is "Chaotic Neutral."
Being a Silver isn't all shady head-games, though. You possess considerable intelligence and self-confidence (whether they manifest themselves or not), and given the opportunity could make a great leader. Magic isn't really your bag, but you're awfully good at slipping in and out of a situation or conflict undetected. Which, by the way, may be due to your slightly-below-average size more than anything else. Your favorable attributes are dependability, durability, problem-solving, mist, fog, silver, and pewter. Like your human counterpart - the Ranger - you're a superb weapons user and have an especially good command of your icy breath weapon. Just keep in mind that even your friends may find your ethics hard to accept from time to time.

"Dragons represent knowledge, hidden wisdom, utilization of personal power and buried treasures. In Celtic thought, the Dragon symbolizes the All, the Source of the Universe. They are considered a combination of serpent (matter) and bird (spirit), and thier fiery breath is the essence of Life-force. Dragon totems, are teachers of magick and serve as protective yet demanding guides who encourage us to be our finest selves."
Have you noticed that virtually all ancient cultures mention and display dragons in similar ways. Even my viking ancesters used dragon boats for royals and war. They were a far bit from china. Makes one think.

Thank you so very much for sharing!!!
I was born under the sign of the dragon. So the first present my husband ever gave me was a pendant with the chinese symbol for dragon in it. He used to call me "little dragon".
