In a hideously cruel response to an outbreak of rabies in late July, authorities in Mouding County in Southwest China ordered the killing of more than 50,000 dogs, including 4,000 who were immunized against the disease. Officials clubbed many animals to death in the street right before their guardians' eyes. Animals who were not beaten mercilessly died equally violent, gruesome deaths by poisoning or electrocution. Last week, the Chinese government issued orders to kill an additional 500,000 dogs. None of these beloved companions will have the benefit of a humane death, because there isn’t a single law in China that prevents cruelty to animals.

China has a long history of cruelty and violence toward animals. In live-animal markets, animals—including dogs and cats—are skinned alive for their fur; merchants hack flesh from animals, piece by piece, until they finally bleed to death; and animals routinely suffer from broken limbs because they are thrown from the tops of transport trucks onto concrete floors.

Please demand that the Chinese government halt the planned slaughter of dogs and enact strict anti-cruelty laws immediately. PETA will collect these letters, and our president will personally present them to the Chinese government. Also, be sure to forward this alert to your friends and family members and ask them to speak up today.

Save the Lives of Cats and Dogs: Support Non-Surgical Sterilization
Sponsor: Alliance for Contraception in Cats and Dogs Imagine being able to sterilize your dog or cat without surgery or anesthesia, but with a simple injection.

While a sterilization injection is not available yet, it will be. WHEN is a matter of how much the public pressures pharmaceutical companies, scientists, regulators and funders into developing the right tools.

While many U.S. pet owners are able to afford and access spay/neuter surgery, it's often a different story for low-income pet owners and rural residents. Surgical sterilization is also logistically difficult and expensive for population control of un-owned animals, such as shelter animals and feral cats. An estimated five million cats and dogs die each year in US shelters alone.

The situation is even more desperate in many other countries where geographic, economic and cultural barriers prevent widespread use of sterilization to control dog and cat populations. Suffering is often greatest in these communities.

The Medical College of Wisconsin is the latest school to enter the debate on the use of animals in teaching. Twenty years ago, live dogs were commonly used in physiology, pharmacology, and surgery classes at medical schools. A standard laboratory exercise involved anesthetizing dogs, followed by injecting pharmaceuticals or practicing surgical techniques. After the class, the animals were killed.
Please contact the Medical College of Wisconsin and politely ask the school to implement alternatives to the use of live dogs in this physiology course.

The Cayman Islands Turtle Farm, a government-owned, for-profit breeding facility in the British West Indies, is working to churn up trade in its endangered green sea turtles—a market that has been illegal since 1977.

The sea turtle farm is seeking permission to sell live turtles and turtle shells to other countries and to allow tourists to purchase shells as souvenirs. The farm in the Cayman Islands is not acting alone in putting these vulnerable animals in a potentially more vulnerable position. It has the support of the government of the United Kingdom, which has been promoting the plan of its Caribbean territory for more than 20 years.  

Like all sea turtles, the green sea turtle is endangered. Allowing any legal trade likely would lead to new markets for illegal trade.

The sea turtles cannot afford for this to happen. It is critical that the UK receives complaints about the recent shipment of live turtles. Otherwise, the doors could re-open for both legal and illegal trade.

What You Can Do

Join The Humane Society of the United States/Humane Society International (HSUS/HSI) and a coalition of 15 international conservation and animal protection organizations in voicing your opposition to any international trade in endangered sea turtles and their parts. Ask the UK government to halt any plans to export sea turtles to other European countries as it would set a precedent for undermining the CITES convention and promotion of commercial trade in these vulnerable species.

The undercover investigation into the production and sale of cat and dog fur began nearly 8 years ago with Humane Society of the US sending an investigator into China to determine how extensive the trade was.  It turned out to be a staggering 2 million cats and dogs raised under cruel conditions and then skinned alive, strangled or stabbed solely for their furs and skins.  There is no cultural aspect of this - it is purely for money.

Undercover investigators documented warehouses in China filled to capacity with skins and pelts awaiting shipment to the US, Russia and the EU.
Asian merchants bragged that they could fraudulently label any item to confuse consumers, dye it to appear as though it was faux fur (or even mink) or not label it at all.
The US banned the import, export, sale and production of cat and dog fur in the US in 2002 -- when evidence was shown that dog fur was being sold on parka jackets at the Burlington Coat Factory and on cat figurines on sale at Hallmark.  Both retailers had no idea the items contained real fur.
 With the loss of the US market, sales appear to have shifted to the EU to make up for lost revenues.  Humane Society International (the international arm of Humane Society of the U has found cat and dog fur readily on sale in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark, Belgium and a group Bont voor Dieren found it in the Netherlands.
Chemical analyses done on a toy mouse and a cat figurine from China which children might play with - found excessive levels of chromium which may affect children's DNA.  The testing was done by a certified lab in the Netherlands where the items were sold on the market.
In Dec 2003, the European Parliament approved by a large majority a written declaration calling on the EU to ban the import, export, sale and production of cat and dog fur.  Concurrently a majority of the EU Council of Agriculture Ministers have called for such a ban.  Despite this and the strong public outcry to get rid of this stuff -- the European Commission has failed to take action.
The EU Commission originally claimed it had no authority under EU law to ban this -- a legal opinion issued by Matrix Chambers in the UK in May 2004 indicates that there is a legal basis under the EC treaty to ban the fur and furthermore it is unlikely to cause a trade issue.  The Commission has never fully responded to MEP Struan Stevenson's submission of this legal opinion. They have just ignored the whole thing.

Despite meetings with high ranking Chinese diplomats both in the US at their mission and in China - the government denies that this trade actually goes on.  They reject this despite ample still photographs, videos, reports and other clear evidence.
At holiday time in the EU, consumers are at greater risk of purchasing (unwittingly) these items since dog and cat fur can be found as lining in ski boots and gloves, trim on parkas, full coats, covering sleeping cat figurines, as hair bows (dyed to look like faux fur) and a host of other items - including some dog chew toys!  There is no labeling law nor would one be sufficient - since Chinese merchants have great skill in making up names for the fur and/or copying well known labels.
In an undercover investigation in Belgium, Humane Society International taped a dealer bragging that while most of his furs came from China, some might actually come from dogs and cats that were stray or lost or even farmed in Belgium. When this aired in Feb2004 it caused worldwide reactions.
IN CONCLUSION:  there is absolutely no reason why the EU cannot ban this fur and do it immediately. Asian merchants told Humane Society undercover investigators that they would give up the business immediately if there was a ban rather than risk high end exports being banned as a punishment. They do this only because there is no law prohibiting it.  At stake is animal cruelty, toxic items and consumer and retailer fraud.

The US has banned it, Australia has banned it and so have Denmark, France, Italy, Belgium and Greece - but until there is a full EU ban 2 million cats and dogs will suffer and the trade will continue.

There is an animal catasrophe happening in the Congo thanks to man's greed for precious metals and ores.

It is looking very likely that Bonobo Apes (pigmy chimpanzees) will be
extinct within just a few years (95% population drop in two decades)

The nightmare of Premarin (HRT)

Premarin, is made from pregnant mare's urine, and that the mares are kept in horrendous conditions - their foals are sold for slaughter. Premarin is the most prescribed of all drugs in America today. Most women don't know what Premarin is made of or how it is made. Today, there are 484 horse factories located in Southern and Central Canada and North Dakota which hold about 75,000 horses. The biggest Percherons and Clydesdales and large thoroughbreds are used - the noblest of horses - the larger the mare, the more urine and estrogen they can produce.

The mares are artificially inseminated and forced to spend their 11-month pregnancies in stalls so small they cannot turn. If they try to lie down, their heads are jolted upright by their halter chains. Long lines of pregnant horses stand, chained and strapped into cramped concrete and steel pens like rows of four-legged galley slaves. They shuffle uncomfortably from hoof to hoof. A forlorn look fills their eyes as they stare. Their coats are dull, their ears droopy - tell-tale signs of a horse's misery. Many get sore, swollen legs or become crippled from standing, months on end, in their tiny concrete stalls.

The mares are kept constantly thirsty. They are denied water so that their urine becomes thick. If they were allowed to drink as much as a normal horse needs, it would over-dilute their estrogen. A rubber, medieval-looking "pee bag" and harness is strapped over the mares' vagina by elastic hoses, secured round their flanks and run over a pulley to the ceiling above them, causing sores which are left open and untreated. Most develop painful urinary tract infections due to the inhumane conditions.

This treatment is for their entire lives which only last for the years they are capable of foaling. Once they can no longer become pregnant, the mares will be shot for horsemeat - just like the majority of the unwanted foals to which they give birth - their reward for producing the billions of dollars made for the estrogen drugs prescribed to unsuspecting women.

Recently visitors at the California Science Center were horrified to discover that live animals including a rat, baby chicks and frogs were on display. The Rat was imprisoned in an almost barren plastic cubicle and shows signs of stress, depression and anxiety as it shook and twitched while children continually pounded on it's cubicle. The baby chicks cried out for their mothers. All animals were in unnatural environments and away from their families.

    Donna Lee Bell, 59, faces 118 counts of animal cruelty after authorities found over 100 animals--at least 40 were dead--in two homes she owned, but did not live in, to house the animals.  She was the owner of the two houses, where she runs "Furry Companions," an animal rescue operation and has found homes for hundreds of animals.  Each count carries a possible sentence of 90 days in jail and a one-thousand-dollar fine.  According to animal control officers, many carcasses of the animals still had collars around their necks, two feet of feces was found in the kitchen, rats jumped at them as they worked and piles of garbage could be seen on the front porch.  "There were flies caked onto the windows and you could see the dogs--their feces and all, were on their paws.  They smeared their paw prints all over the windows," said Jeffrey Foard.  

    Bell was arrested May 15, 2006 and will be seen in court again September 12, 2006.

    Thank You Ami for posting all these petitions! I did miss a couple of them in the past and it was great to see them here.  

    I noticed on the End Primate Torture petition that I was the only one who had signed this one. I rechecked before adding this comment and there are only two! I'm not sure if it's new or not, but I have seen one very similar to this with the exact same picture so at first I thought it was one I had already signed. If I had not scrolled all the way down I would have not noticed it was not signed AT ALL before I signed. Again, this may be a new one, but I thought I would mention it.

    On April 2, 2006, Beauregard, a beagle-basset mix and a Hurricane Katrina survivor, along with his playmate Millie, another rescued beagle, were murdered by Kenneth R. Cox III, while scenting a deer on an adjacent farm near Circleville, OH. Mr. Cox shot the two dogs with a 9mm handgun. After originally confessing to the shootings, he pleaded "not guilty" to animal cruelty at his arraignment, claiming one of the dogs "growled" at him. He stated he "shot the dog that growled at him, then shot the second dog that was just standing near the first dog." Both dogs were across a woven wire fence and were shot directly through their sides....CONT'D

    Geese accused of contaminating a local lake will face a dark fate as early as this summer.
    Wildlife experts say the number of Canada Geese at Collins Lake is now more than twice the number it should be.

    The cost of this task will be $300,000 and the reason for this, according to the Times Union, is to restore the quality of the lake.
    Collins Lake was closed last summer because of the high levels of E-coli Bacteria.
    Many critics say they're unhappy with this decision, however village officials say it's the best option for now.
    Scotia's mayor says next year the city will consider non-lethal means in addressing the ongoing problem.
    There are many alternatives to stop reproduction of geese and to get them out of the area without harming or hurting them.

    Primates possess many qualities which
    were once considered solely human attributes. The central nervous system of Primates and humans is organized in almost the same way, and there are similarities between the social behavior, emotional needs and intellectual capabilities of humans and other Primates. Primates demonstrate the ability to reason, to exhibit friendship and altruism, to suffer fear and stress.

    UK and EU legislation has been partially expanded to supposedly protect their specific requirements in the laboratory and afford them a 'higher' status than other animal species under Directive 86/609/EEC.  The reality is, however, that this legal provision does not prevent thousands of primates each year enduring terrible pain, suffering and death in the laboratory.  . Experiments that would be unthinkable if performed on human subjects should also be considered morally unacceptable when carried out on our genetic cousins.

    Researchers use primates as 'models' of human diseases on which the development and progression of such diseases can be monitored and treated. However primates, like other animals, make poor 'models' and attempting to extrapolate test results from one species to another is a fundamentally flawed research methodology. Despite their similarities, there are also many significant differences between humans and others Primates.

    The fundamental flaw underlying the research of human diseases in primates is that researchers can only attempt to artificially induce similar superficial symptoms of human diseases in Primates, which is very different from studying a naturally occurring disease in a biologically relevant animal i.e. a human patient.

    Primates who are removed from their normal habitat, deprived of environmental stimulants and social interaction, make poor 'models' on which to record the 'natural' development of disease or infection. Like human beings, primates react very differently to disease or illness depending on their physical and psychological states.

    The reality is, despite what the research industry would have us believe, primates do not provide a reliable 'model' of the human being. After decades of research on primates, scientists have repeatedly failed to make significant breakthroughs in fully understanding the onset and progression of HIV or AIDS, cot death, epilepsy, Parkinson's or Alzheimer's disease, or cancer - all human conditions which have been thoroughly, though pointlessly, explored through research on Primates.

          The Gibraltar Cat Welfare Society has been running a 'Snip a Stray' scheme for the last 18 months. So far they have neutered over 700 cats. These cats can easily be identified by their clipped ear, which allows the Cat Welfare Society to monitor the cat population without wiping them out completely.

          Sadly, there are other people in Gibraltar that feel it necessary to destroy these valuable vermin controllers. The Cat Welfare Society feels that if this continues then within 5-10 years there will be no cats left on Gibraltar which will inevitably create health and hygiene issues with rats, mice and cockroaches.

          The Cat Welfare Society is asking the Government of Gibraltar to make the neutered cats 'free citizens' of Gibraltar, protecting them from harm and allowing them to carry out their natural roles within the community of keeping rats, mice and cockroaches at bay.

    Ask Governor Bush to Veto Greyhound Racing Subsidy

    Earlier this month, the Florida Legislature approved a record $71 billion
    budget. Unfortunately, tucked into the budget is a $310,000 gift to the
    Pensacola Greyhound Track (supposedly to pay for hurricane damage).

    Governor Bush has vetoed many of these small subsidies in previous year's
    budgets. Please contact Governor Bush and urge him not to spend the public's
    money in support of the cruel greyhound racing industry.

    E-mail Governor Jeb Bush at     jeb.bush@myflorida.com and ask him to veto the
    subsidy for the Pensacola Greyhound Track that was inserted into the state
    budget

    TAKE ACTION TO END SHARK TOURNAMENT IN MARTHA'S VINEYARD
    Martha’s Vineyard is the quintessential New England vacation destination, complete with quaint villages, charming harbors, and gorgeous beaches. People seeking respite have flocked to the island for generations to be greeted by friendly Vineyarders, whose economy depends on the seasonal influx of tourists.

    But the idyllic island image cloaks a sinister ritual sanctioned by local officials. Each summer, entrants in the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament hook sharks; bleed, suffocate, or repeatedly gaff them; and string them up on docks in gruesome, sometimes mocking displays—all for prizes and gory glory. Last year in 2005, some 240 boats killed approximately 2,500 sharks in the span of 3 days.

    Mass shark killing contests are not only cruel, but they also target members of already imperiled populations of slow breeding and ecologically important shark species. Like whales, most species of sharks reproduce late in life—some are as old as 20 years—and give birth to few young. It can take decades for populations to recover from being killed in large numbers by fishermen.

    Most shark populations are already in jeopardy. A study reported in the journal Science in 2003 estimated that all recorded shark species, with the exception of Makos, have declined by more than 50% in the previous 8 to 15 years. The situation remains dire, despite recent international     efforts to protect shark species.

    The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has assessed the conservation status of 62 species of sharks. Of these, 21 were classified as "endangered"—meaning they face a very high risk of extinction in the near future—or "vulnerable"—meaning they face a high risk of extinction in the not so distant future. The other 31 species were ranked "near threatened," indicating that their status is approaching "vulnerable."

    Of the 15 shark species found in New England, home of the Monster Shark Tournament, the IUCN has classified the Smooth Dogfish as critically endangered and the White Shark as endangered. Three other species are considered vulnerable and eight are near-threatened. The population data on the remaining two species is insufficient to evaluate their conservation status.

    ESPN Aggrandizes the Tournament

    In 2004 and 2005, ESPN broadcast the Oak Bluffs Monster Shark Tournament as if it were a legitimate sport. Many in the nation were appalled and called on ESPN to stop aggrandizing the cruelty. The network refused.

    ESPN and The Boston Big Game Fish Club has its 20th Annual tournament scheduled for July 20–22, 2006 and ESPN plans to broadcast it.

    19 year old, Robert Lee Bailey, cut the throat of 6 year old dog, Sassy after stealing her from her yard and taking her to an abandoned trailer to kill her.  He was arrested January 17, 2006 and held on $50,000 bond.  He admitted he was guilty and confessed to taking Sassy from her yard and killing her.  However, he was later released with the sentence of time served, counseling and being ordered to live with his grandfather in Nevada.  He is not serving any more time in jail, he is not being punished for this brutal crime.  He is free to harm more animals and possibly move on to humans.  This is a disservice to your community and other communities around the country.  He needs to be punished for this crime against an animal.  According to the Ada Evening News the DA, Nancy Shew, was quoted as saying, "This type of offense could carry up to five years in jail, but [she] felt that this type of punishment was enough to help get Bailey back on the right track."  We, the undersigned, disagree with the sentence given by Judge Thomas Landrith and the opinion of the Nancy Shew.  This is not enough to get him "back on the right track."  He needs to be severely punished for this premeditated crime that he admitted to committing.  He plead guilty to this crime and he needs to be sentence to the maximum allowedhttp://www.gopetition.com/ by law, which according to DA Nancy Shew is five years in jail.  We, the undersigned, demand that Robert Lee Bailey be sentenced to the maximum penalty for animal cruelty and/or abuse in Ada, Oklahoma.  He did not deny his actions as he plead guilty and admitted to the involvement in the death of Sassy.

    Robert Lee Bailey, 19, was charged with cruelty to animals.  Bailey was arrested on Jan 17 by Deputy Ronnie Sites.  William Prowse, resident of the Country Lane Trailer Park, reported to PCSO on Jan 13 that his 6-year-old female poodle, Sassy, was missing from his fenced yard.  Undersheriff Joe Glover said Prowse was notified by neighborhood children of a large amount of fresh blood inside a nearby abandoned trailer house the following day. Prowse inspected the house and found Sassy dead under the trailer. According to Glover, she was inside a drain hole and apparently died from a lacerated throat. Glover said Bailey first denied any involvement with the dog or her death. Glover interviewed Bailey at the PCSO Jail where he confessed to the crime. Bailey admitted to taking Sassy from Prowse's yard and killing her at the abandoned trailer house.  He was sentenced to time served, counseling and being ordered to live with his grandfather in Nevada. 

    The DA says this type of offense could carry up to five years in jail, but felt that this type of punishment was enough to help get Bailey back on the right track.
