Michael Vick has been sentenced to 23 months in prison for financing a dogfighting ring and helping to kill pit bulls. Vick initially denied any wrong doing but eventually admitted he was deeply involved in a dogfighting enterprise and endorsed the killing of dogs who did not fight well by drowning or hanging. Vick's sentence came too late for all the dogs that were killed and victimized as part of his dogfighting activities. Please urge the NFL to ban Michael Vick permanently. Professional players are role models for children and millions of people and someone with a record of animal cruelty shouldn't be allowed to set a bad example. The bear was one of 10 found with catheters implanted into the gall bladder to extract bile (Image: Reuters/China Newsphoto) A diagnostic kit to crack down on illegal trade in bile extracted from live bears is being used by Australian and Canadian customs officers, an animal welfare group says. Bear bile is a common ingredient in traditional medicines throughout East and Southeast Asia, says the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). The test kit uses antibodies to detect a signature bear protein and was demonstrated this week at a meeting in The Hague of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITE, which involves 171 nations. "Interest from wildlife trade enforcement officials has been very strong," says Professor Kate Sanders, an evolutionary biologist who adapted a technique used to identify species in venomous snakebites to develop the kit. The kits are slated to go on the market at the end of the year and will cost no more than US$40 (A$47), says Sanders, from Australia 's University of Adelaide. Theactive compound in bear bile is ursodeoxcholic acid (UDCA) and is thought to be effective for ailments ranging from liver disorders to haemorrhoids to hepatitis. The compound has been available in a synthetic form for years, say animal rights groups calling for an end to bear farming. Yet the use of bear bile is still widespread, a WSPA survey released this week shows. More than half of 130 traditional Asian medicine shops in eight countries investigated illegally-sold products containing bear bile, the survey shows. The WSPA says most originated from China, where the fluid is drawn off using one of several painful methods from more than 7000 animals held in box-like cages on dozens of farms. The procedure is not illegal in China, but CITES bans all cross-border commerce in bear parts. The survey of Asian medicine shops in North America and the Asia Pacific region uncovered dozens of illegal bear bile products. About 15% of the stores investigated in the US and Canada sold the contraband, with the percentage increasing to 22% in Singapore, 33% in Korea, 42% in Taiwan and 75% in Japan. Cruel methods The methods used to extract the bile from farmed animals varies from one country to the next, but all are condemned by animal welfare groups as cruel. "In Vietnam, farmers typically immobilise the bears with a paralysing drug, often ketamine," known to recreational drug users as 'special K', says Dave Eastham, head of wildlife for WSPA. "They use ultrasound to locate the bile and then insert a long hypodermic needle to draw off 100 to 150 millilitres of bile," he says, repeating the process once a month. The bears are conscious throughout the process. "We have tapes showing the bears screaming with apprehension just before the procedure begins," he says. In China, a more primitive technique has been outlawed but Eastham says it "is still very common". The bile drips from a tube - surgically inserted through the bear's abdomen- equipped with a tap that can be turned on and off. Extractions are daily, sometimes twice a day. It is like bleeding sap from a maple tree, "only more painful", he says. More than half of bears farmed for bile in China do not survive for very long after extraction begins, but those that do can live for up to 10years. Last year (2005) a decision was made that no more hunting was to take place of white tailed deer and other animals behind high fences (Canned Hunts) in Indiana. The Dept of Natural Resources passed emergency and permanent rules and the Governor and Attorney General signed off. Indiana State Legislature did not intervene. But this year, Kyle Hupfer has changed his mind and his words about hunting ethics and fair chase. Present situation: Today, 30^th of January 2006, the local authorities (Bucharest Mayor and Chief of Animal Survey Administration) took the decision to start the campaign of the stray dogs killing. This fact is due to the tragical event, that happened on 29^th of January 2006 in Bucharest, near the Government Residence. A Japanese business man died because of a wound made by a dog bite. So far there are no proofs and no witnesses to demonstrate that this tragical accident involved a stray dog. Until now the Police didn’t take into consideration to possibility that it might be a crime that used a fight dog as a killing weapon. The case is unfortunately closed, being easily for the authorities to blame a stray dog then to solve a possible murder. The political decision of the authorities jumped the conclusions, being taken too fast (in several hours), following a very aggressive media campaign that created panic and different violent reaction (dogs are poisoned, mutilated burned). The stray dog population is something normal in citizens life being a very old reality since decades. The massive demolitions during the communist regime, from the 80's generated stray dogs population increase and except massive extermination, nobody in Romania took action to settle a sterilization program based on human and decent methods of caching, selection, tagging, neutering and releasing the stray dogs. Our proposal: Please help us to: - convince the local authorities to manage this problem in a human way, respecting international standards, laws and conventions that Romania signed to become part of European Union in 2007, - stop the slaughter of the animals, - make the authorities to understand the importance of respecting animal and human rights, according with international regulations, - convince the authorities that the solution offered by local and international NGO’s in this issue is a solution based an scientific research, the only solution that can solve the problem. This behavior is punishable under article 269. of the Criminal Code of Serbia with up to 3 years of imprisonment. We , The Society friends of Animals "Friend" and The Society for protect and welfare of animals"Arka" , collected the documents and material proofs confirming dose criminal abuses and gave them to allmost all local prosecutors in Serbia. There was no reply. This year the government has set the 2006 hunting quota at 85,000 pups; a level that combined with natural mortality could result in the annihilation of this year's entire seal pup population. Despite declining numbers of pups born annually and seal populations that have not recovered from mass die-offs in 1994 and 2000, the quota increased from 50,850 pups in 1993 to 85,000 in 2006. Officials clubbed many animals to death in the street right before their guardians' eyes. Animals who were not beaten mercilessly died equally violent, gruesome deaths by poisoning or electrocution. Now the Chinese government has issued orders to kill an additional 500,000 dogs. None of these beloved companions will have the benefit of a humane death, because there isn't a single law in China that prevents cruelty to animals. China has a long history of cruelty and violence toward animals. In live-animal markets, animals—including dogs and cats—are skinned alive for their fur; merchants hack flesh from animals, piece by piece, until they finally bleed to death; and animals routinely suffer from broken limbs because they are thrown from the tops of transport trucks onto concrete floors. Please demand that the Chinese government call off the planned slaughter of hundreds of thousands of dogs and enact strict anti-cruelty laws immediately.
