Ecotourism/Responsible Travel -- Tell Us Your Thoughts June 14, 2006 5:57 AM

Greetings, The term ecotourism is a wide-reaching one. Unfortunately, it's a term used by many and can mean little more than a hike in the forest. It can also be just as damaging as mass tourism if it is not well managed. The media can also mispresent ecotourism. Responsible Travel is the general term used to include many categories including ecotourism, ecoagritourism, sustainable tourism, cultural heritage tourism...the list goes on. Real ecotourism helps to protect and preserve natural habitats and local communities. There's rarely a (textbook) formula to make this happen. It's passion for preservation of communities that launches most people into action. It's never easy, especially if the national government is not supportive. A successful eco/agritourism program requires continuous collaboration with communities, the public and private sector and travelers. Unfortunately, some of these components are missing for many grassroots groups working on great projects. Tell us your thoughts about Responsible Travel -- if you have taken an ecotour, what was it like, what are the pros and cons, and what do you expect or recommend during your responsible travels? We look forward to hearing from you! All the best, Nik  [ send green star]

Nikki pls write something more from your experiences during last summer October 04, 2006 6:39 AM

Dear Nikki hi. How about taking some of your time and write your experiences from the visits you made to the culinary spots... Give us something more than the usual "daily bread only>. As members of the group, who have not the opportunity to read the memories from different olaces on Crete, I am urging you to write more often about your trips to the sanctusries.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

News from The Fields October 04, 2006 6:53 AM

Greetings Everyone, Thanks, Apostolis, for your request for more stories about traveling Crete. I promise to write more from the fields...when I'm not in them. Since I organize eco-agritourism programs, I'm never in one place long enough to let the horta grow under my feet. And internet connections or those handy internet cafes are very hard to come by in my neck of the woods. Not much use for those in the little villages. A friend of mine here says, "The net is very useful in the collection of fish." But, I have written dozens of articles about traveling, eating and farming in Crete. They are on my website at http://www.cookingincrete.com/Articles.html Also, I'll be speaking about our work in Crete at the World Tourism Forum for Peace and Sustainable Development in Brazil. That news is here: http://www.desti-nations.net/ Look for the CCS info on the front page. More news soon, I promise! Best regards, Nik  [ send green star]

Hi everyone! I have never been to Crete but I just came back from the Cyclades. I am absolutely in love with Greece, so when Apostolis invited me to join the group I didn't hesitate. A little something to do to distract my longing og Greece. Rebeca  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

I am also very eco-friendly and planning a tour now days. I am planning to visit some cities in East Asia including Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Can you tell me how to make a eco-friendly tour. I had never experienced such tour though I had been to several cultural tours and historical tours before. While browsing net I had come across an interesting tour: http://www.ekoventure.com/trips/south_east_asia-thailand-bangkok-cultural_tours-historical-education-exploration-luxury-soft_adventure-trails-of-indochina-18606 How did you find it???  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Responsible Travel Options in Asia July 03, 2009 11:18 AM

Dear Sarah, Sounds like a wonderful adventure. I'm not very familiar with Asia, although I worked in Cambodia this winter on responsible travel start-ups. A few links to research: Heritage Watch, a Cambodia-based NGO linking responsible travel practitioners and heritage friendly businesses together: http://www.tourismfortomorrow.com/Winners/2009_Winners_and_Finalists/heritage-watch/ Also, Costas Christ has written extensively about Asia for National Geographic Adventure magazine. See also his blog on Nat Geo's site, entitled Beyond Green Travel. http://ngadventure.typepad.com/blog/beyond_green_travel/ Have a wonderful trip! Best regards, Nikki  [ send green star]
