Preventing SIDS (Cot Death) November 17, 2008 3:29 PM
Scientists
still
dont know the exact cause of sudden infant death syndrome - SIDS - but
research has shown that babies should be placed on their
backs to sleep. Although parents may be vigilant about this practice at
home, over half of daycare centers are not, so make sure that your
daycare center has a written sleep safety policy.
Experts
also say that running a fan in the babys room can decrease the risk of
SIDS by over 70 percent.
Petition: Save Children from Preventable Deaths! (Unicef) November 16, 2008 7:32 AM
If you saw eight children drowning in a pool, would you feel satisfied
if you only brought the first four to safety? Would you rest
comfortably knowing that the other four were still drowning, even
though you had the means to save them simply by calling for help,
extending a hand or tossing a rope? Of course not.
At UNICEF, we believe in children. We believe deeply that every childregardless of race, gender, religion, nationality or economic statusis equally deserving of a future.
We believe that every child, not a percentage of children, should be
afforded basic lifesaving vaccines, clean water, nutrition, protection
from violence and a chance to survive to adulthood.
It all
starts with child survivalensuring that newborns, young children and
their mothers have what they need to stay healthy and have the
opportunity to grow up. Too many children dont get that opportunityevery day, 25,000 children under the age of five die of preventable causes. They dont have to die, but they do.
UNICEF believes it is possible to reach zerozero
child lives lost to preventable causes like pneumonia, diarrhea,
malnutrition and infection; zero children disabled by unnecessary
illness; zero mothers dying as they give birth for lack of health care.
An impossible dream? No, an achievable goalwith enough will and enough
resources. UNICEF has proven that we know how to stop this from
happening, with integrated, cost-effective solutions.
Whats
missing? Leadership. Everyone has a part to play: individuals,
corporations, civic groups, church organizationsand, yes, government. We need the United States to provide leadership on child survival. That means both Congress and the President.
We
have seen what can be accomplished when both the White House and the
Capitol work together to help poor countries. Recent Presidential
Initiatives on HIV/AIDS and Malaria succeeded in mobilizing leadership,
action and resources to make amazing progress in addressing those
diseases.
But fighting those diseases is not enough. Though many
child lives have been saved, too many countriesarticularly in
Africahave shown little or no improvement over the past ten years.
We want the next President of the United States, Presidentelect Obama, to take a stand for the worlds children. We want a Presidential Initiative to Accelerate Child Survival that focuses like a laser on doing what it takes to eliminate the preventable deaths of newborns, children and mothers.
But, we wont get to zero if we continue business as usual.
We need to step things up. And we need the new President to lead. With
the right leadership, the resources and results can flow.
Our
petition for this Presidential Initiative calls for a dramatic scaleup
of the coordinated, high-impact interventions that are proven to save
child lives in even the poorest communities. The Initiative would
provide $1 billion a year for the next five years to implement
accelerated child survival strategies in the countries where the most
children are dying. With an investment like this from the United States
Government, UNICEF calculates an additional three million childrens
lives can be saved by 2012.
Just think three million lives saved in under four years. At that
rate, we could get to zero in less than a generation. What an
accomplishment that would be for all humanity.
If YOU believe in zero, and YOU want our government to lead the way for the world to do right by its childrensign our petition!
DonorsChoose.org is a simple way to provide students in need with
resources that our public schools often lack. At this not-for-profit
web site, teachers submit project proposals for materials or
experiences their students need to learn. These ideas become classroom
reality when concerned individuals, whom we call Citizen
Philanthropists, choose projects to fund.
Proposals range from "Magical Math Centers" ($200) to "Big Book
Bonanza" ($320), to "Cooking Across the Curriculum" ($1,100). Any
individual can search such proposals by areas of interest, learn about
classroom needs, and choose to fund the project(s) they find most
compelling. Donations can be as little as $1.
BBC: Child Deaths in Africa January 23, 2008 7:29 AM
Africa 'lagging on child deaths'
Sub-Saharan Africa is at the bottom of the child survival table Poverty and war are harming advances in infant mortality, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, a new Unicef report on global child health has said. Globally, 62 countries were making no or insufficient progress towards a key 2015 child mortality target, it said.
Sierra Leone was the worst performer, with 270 deaths before the age of five per 1,000 live births, in 2006 figures.
This compares to three deaths per 1,000 in the world's six best performers, which included Sweden and Singapore.
The attainment of the 2015 goal - called the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG), which requires a two-thirds reduction in the 1990 under-five mortality rate - "is still possible, but the challenge is formidable", the report says.
Maine Babies Given College Fund at Birth! January 16, 2008 1:49 PM
Just a few days into the new year, Laurie and Keenan Farwell welcomed their daughter Hadley into the world. The hospital staff at MaineGeneral Health in Augusta had the pleasure of delivering not just the baby, but also her first birthday gift: $500 toward her future education.
Hadley is a beneficiary of the new Harold Alfond College Challenge, a first-in-the nation philanthropic program that will give families statewide a $500 starter grant – and assistance with paperwork – to set up 529 college savings accounts for infants.
"It was very exciting to think she's not even a couple hours old, and she's already looking at her college fund," Ms. Farwell said in a phone interview as Hadley patiently sucked on her tiny hand, awaiting a feeding.
Harold Alfond founded Dexter Shoe Co. in Maine in 1958 and shared millions of dollars to promote health and education in the state. After giving many scholarships to college-age students, "he wanted to help build aspirations for college at the front end of life," says Greg Powell, chairman of the board of the Harold Alfond Foundation. Mr. Alfond laid the groundwork for this legacy before he died in November.
While elite colleges have moved recently to replace loans with grants, the high cost of college is still a barrier to many families. As efforts continue to rein in those costs, the Maine scholarship is a creative way to address the other side of the college-debt problem – the dearth of long-range savings.
Other states will be watching the outcome as they look to encourage more participation in their 529 plans, named after a section of the Internal Revenue Code that allows such deposits to grow tax-free. Some groups are even hoping that states or the federal government will consider creating broader child savings accounts that could be used by the beneficiary for any purpose once he or she turns 18.
"It's about changing savings patterns and financial literacy," says Lisa Mensah, executive director of the Initiative on Financial Security at The Aspen Institute, a supporter of child savings accounts. "The power is not the first $500, but how individual kids and their families save over their life."

Cool invention will help children January 06, 2008 5:05 PM
Imagine a village whose well has dried up or become polluted, and the river isn't clean enough to drink.
Short of shipping in water, which the village cannot afford, they are in serious trouble. Until now.
Aquamaker, a Houston, Texas-based company with a subsidiary in Israel, has perfected its atmospheric water generator. Atmospheric water what, you may ask?
It's easy to describe and easy to use and mind blowing in its possibilities - Aquamaker creates water out of air.
Aquamaker converts the humidity in the regular everyday air we breathe into water, and it will work practically anywhere in the world, even the desert. The system filters out the pollutants and because it doesn't come from the ground it isn't full of harsh minerals.
"It's your own well, and it's clean," said Israel CEO of Aquamaker Eita Markovits in an interview with The Jerusalem Post at the company's Tel Aviv office.
Much like the fax machine, where the theory had been worked out long before it was built, the company has been working for years to perfect the filtration and circulation system for commercial use. They finally made serious breakthroughs in 2006. The Israel office opened its doors four months ago and began selling the basic model, the AM10, a month ago. They've had hundreds of queries in that short time.
"We believe that five to ten years from now, we will be part of how Israel supplies its citizens with water," Markovits said.
Aquamaker represents one of a range of companies whose products are priced to be both commercially competitive and environmentally friendly.
The company, Markovits, explained is not just in competition with mineral water providers. They have a much grander vision.
"This is a new market with a vision. An environmentally friendly way to create water," Markovits told the Post.
At a time where demand is increasingly overwhelming what nature provides to Israel through precipitation, new water sources are essential. Aquamaker has machines capable of producing as much as 5,000 liters. With a solar powered generator and a 5,000 liter capacity machine, villages without direct access to water could be fully supplied.

Make a Peruvian Child Smile December 05, 2007 10:30 AM
Bring smiles to small faces this holiday season by giving Christmas presents to poor children in South America!
For almost a decade, the Ramos family of Peru has maintained a beautiful annual tradition. Every year, they collect a treasure trove of presents for children -- small, inexpensive things that can nevertheless mean the world to a child without any toys of his or her own. And every year, they travel hours through rough, unpaved terrain to the vast shoreline of Lake Titicaca, the largest lake in South America, to give the presents to the children living on traditional floating villages constructed of reeds.
From time immemorial, the Uros people, a pre-Incan indigenous group, has lived on artificial floating islands made almost entirely of reeds. Totora lake reeds are constantly added to the top of the islands to compensate for the reeds at the bottom rotting away. The islands are tethered in place with ropes to the bottom of the lake, but can be moved if needed. With a culture and economy based mostly on reeds and subsistence fishing, the Uros have very few material possessions, and the children often work from an early age.
Of the children, Mariel Mercado Ramos writes, "[T]he kids are so nice and so grateful for not too much, they don't need the last Barbie or the biggest toy that shows on TV, they get very happy with a common doll or a little car, the best for them specially for the boys are the balls of soccer and for the girls balls of volley. So since that year all the next years these kids wait for us on Christmas."
She continues, "It was the first year we went to give the presents, it was raining very hard, but still the children were waiting, waiting for somebody to give them something, so we pass and there was a little girl and we gave her a doll, she started dancing in the middle of the rain, she was so happy. I will never forget this image, and after that I start crying because, Thank God!, I always have many things. So although I know that life sometimes is not fair, still it doesn't take anything to give a little smile to someone."
Your $10 purchase will provide two small gifts, such as dolls, sports equipment, or toy cars, to children living on the floating islands of Lake Titicaca.

TELL CONGRESS AMERICA'S SAFETY IS HIGHEST PRIORITY ! September 07, 2006 10:34 PM
Bioterrorism Before Elections Sponsor: Trust for America's HealthSoon after the tragedy of 9/11, Congress passed legislation to upgrade the nation’s capacity to respond to acts of bioterrorism and other public health emergencies. The statute's authorization is set to expire on September 30th.
New legislation pending before Congress would shore up emergency preparedness measures and improve public health capabilities at the state and local level. Passing this bill is vital to the nation's homeland security and the nation's health. Congress's failure to act would put all of us at risk.
While considerable progress has been achieved in improving America's health emergency preparedness, the nation is still not adequately prepared to respond to the health threats posed by diseases, disasters and bioterrorism. And while there is no way to be 100 percent prepared, there are still basic achievable levels of preparedness the nation has yet to meet. Americans deserve better.
Tell Congress to pass this essential legislation before they leave Washington to campaign for the November elections.More about this petition »

TAKE HEED! SWIFFER WETJET CONTAINS ANTIFREEZE HARMFUL August 22, 2006 12:12 AM
TO SMALL CHILDREN AND ANIMALS!
Copied from an email I received.
"Harmful to babies, pets and small children!! IMPORTANT I recently had a neighbor who had to have their 5-year old German Shepherd dog put down due to liver failure. The dog was completely healthy until a few weeks ago, so they had a necropsy done to see what the cause was. The liver levels were unbelievable, as if the dog had ingested poison of some kind. The dog is kept inside, and when he's outside, someone's with him, so the idea of him getting into something unknown was hard to believe. My neighbor started going through all the items in the house. When he got to the Swiffer Wetjet, he noticed, in very tiny print, a warning which stated "may be harmful to small children and animals." He called the company to ask what the contents of the cleaning agent are and was astounded to find out that antifreeze is one of the ingredients. Actually he was told it's a compound which is one molecule away from antifreeze. Therefore, just by the dog walking on the floor cleaned with the solution, then licking its own paws, it ingested enough of the solution to destroy its liver. Soon after his dog's death, his housekeepers' two cats also died of liver failure. They both used the Swiffer Wetjet for quick cleanups on heir floors Necropsies weren't done on the cats, so they couldn't file a lawsuit, but he asked that we spread the word to as many others as possible so that they don't lose their animals. This is equally harmful to babies and small children that play on the floor a lot and put their fingers in their mouths a lot."

Copied from another post!
Seeds of Deception
“…there is a current threat that the USDA and other agencies have continued to disregard: The virus-resistant crops already on the market may be increasing the susceptibility of consumers to viral infections and, ironically, even putting the crops at greater risk. According to virologist Jonathan Latham of the Bioscience Resource Project , “None of the important questions about the safety of viral transgenes have been answered. We still have no idea whether they will cause the evolution of new viruses by recombination or what will be the effect of putting viral proteins into plants.”

June 6, 2006 RadioAlice 97.3 a CBS Radio station choose to go too far
in there poor attempt to get a laugh. They started a topic regarding
stillborn babies and parents who take pictures of there children. They
began to give there views but then went overboard by saying these
parents are 'sick', 'disturbed', "disgusting" they even said 'we should
go to a taxidermist and have our children stuffed". This is horrific.
People need to be held liable for intentionally causing pain on
another. I am a loss mom. I have enough pain every day I hear a baby
cry, everyday I see a pregnant woman, everyday someone asks how many
children I have, everyday I go by a park and see all the kids playing
etc etc. These are stabs in my heart I dont need a no talent , want to
be radio personality to mock my real pain. I do have pictures of my
children because that was the first and the last time I would ever see
them again. I don't want to ever forget there beautiful faces, there
tiny hands, there perfect feet this is all I have. Why should that make
me open for ridicule? .I am asking for all the sponsors of the
RAdioAlice show and all of us to make our voices heard. To let it be
known this is not ok. Another persons pain is no joking matter
especially when it involves a Mother or a Father who lost there baby.

Special Needs Accept the
special needs of children by allowing them to be more dependent on you
for a period of time. Give more hugs if they need them; let them keep
the light on at night or not sleep alone or return to having their
favorite teddy bear or blanket; don't mind their clinging behavior.
Media Coverage Following a
disaster, everyone is eager to hear the latest news about what
happened. However, disaster research has shown that unexpected messages
or images on television were frightening, causing a reappearance of
stress-related problems. In addition, anyone who watches the disaster
coverage can become what is called a "secondary victim" and can suffer
emotional and physical problems. It is best to not allow children to
watch news coverage of the disaster.
Feelings and Reactions Children
express their feelings and reactions in different ways. Your acceptance
of this will make a difference to how your child recovers from the
trauma. This means accepting that some children will react by becoming
withdrawn and unable to talk about the event, while others will feel
intensely sad and angry at times and at other times will act as if the
disaster never happened. Children are often confused about what has
happened and about their feelings. However, don't be surprised if some
children don't seem to be affected by what they have seen and heard.
Not everyone has immediate reactions; some have delayed reactions that
show up days, weeks, or even months later, and some may never have a
reaction.
Talking about what happened
Listen to and accept children's feelings.
Give honest, simple, brief answers to their questions.
Make sure they understand your answers and the meaning you intend.
Use words or phrases that won't confuse a child or make the world more frightening.
Create opportunities for children to talk with each other about what happened and how they are feeling.
Give your child an honest explanation if you are feeling so
upset you don't want to talk about what happened. You may want to take
"time out" and ask a trusted family friend to help.
If children keep asking the same question over and over again
it is because they are trying to understand; trying to make sense out
of the disruption and confusion in their world. Younger children will
not understand that death is permanent, so their repeated inquiries are
because they expect everything to return to normal.
If the child feels guilty, ask him or her to explain what
happened. Listen carefully to whether he or she attaches a sense of
responsibility to some part of the description. Explain the facts of
the situation and emphasize that no one, least of all the child, could
have prevented it.
Let the school help The child's teacher can be sensitive to
changes in the child's behavior and will be able to respond in a
helpful way.
Even if you feel the world is an unsafe place, you can
reassure your child by saying, "The event is over. Now we'll do
everything possible to stay safe, and together we can help get things
back to normal."
Notice when children have questions and want to talk.
Be especially loving and supportive; children need you at this time.
When To Seek Professional Help
Children are amazingly flexible, even though they can be deeply
affected by trauma or losses. Sometimes a child can be helped by a
counselor who can provide a safe place to talk about what happened and
their feelings. Getting professional help is a good idea if a child
shows any of the following changes for longer than three months
following the trauma:
Behavior or academic problems at school.
Angry outbursts.
Withdrawal from usual social activities or play with other children.
Frequent nightmares or other sleep disturbances.
Physical problems such as nausea, headaches, weight gain or loss.
Intense anxiety or avoidance behavior that is triggered by reminders of the event.
Depression or a sense of hopelessness about life or the future.
Alcohol or drug use problems.
Dangerous risk-taking behavior.
Continued worry about the event as a primary focus in life.
Certain events may make a child more vulnerable to having
difficulty. If a child has experienced a recent loss such as a divorce,
a death of someone who was close, or a move to a new neighborhood, he
or she may feel particularly overwhelmed by the trauma. A traumatic
event can reactivate the emotions associated with previous traumas,
which can be overpowering.
Seeing a counselor does not mean that a child is "mentally
ill" or that you have failed to support him or her. Following a trauma,
many adults and children have found that it is helpful to talk with a
counselor who has specialized training in post-traumatic reactions and
can help them understand and deal with how they are feeling.
Disasters are upsetting to everyone involved. Children, older people,
and/or people with disabilities are especially at risk. For a child,
his or her view of the world as a safe and predictable place is
temporarily lost. Children become afraid that the event will happen
again and that they or their family will be injured or killed. The
damage, injuries, and deaths that can result from an unexpected or
uncontrollable event are difficult for most children to understand.
How a parent or other adult reacts to a child following any
traumatic event can help children recover more quickly and more
completely. This brochure contains general information to help you in
this task.
Children's Reactions
Children's fear and anxiety are very real, even though to adults
they may seem exaggerated. Children are afraid of what is strange. They
fear being left alone. Following a disaster, they may begin acting
younger than the age they are. Behaviors that were common at an earlier
age, such as bedwetting, thumb sucking, clinging to parents or fear of
strangers, may reappear. Older children who have shown some
independence may want to spend more time with their families. Bedtime
problems may appear. A child may begin to have night-mares; not want to
sleep alone; and/or become afraid of the dark, falling asleep or
remaining asleep.
Some children will show their fear by developing physical
symptoms, such as stomachaches, headaches or feeling "sick." All
children can experience thinking difficulties. They can become easily
distracted, feel confused and disoriented and find it hard to
concentrate. These reactions can be triggered by smells, objects or
activities associated with the trauma. A child may be unaware of the
triggers and of any of the behavioral changes that occur. They are not
intentionally showing they are anxious or fearful.
Children of different ages react in different ways to trauma.
Birth to 2 years Without the
ability to speak, children cannot describe the event or their feelings.
They can retain memories of particular sights, sounds, or smells. When
they are older, these memories may emerge in their play. Babies may be
more irritable, cry more often and need to be held and cuddled
frequently. They will respond to the caring that is given to them by an
adult.
Preschool and Kindergarten In
the face of an overwhelming event, very young children can feel
helpless, powerless, and unable to protect themselves. When the safety
of their world is threatened, they feel insecure and fearful. Children
this age cannot understand the concept of permanent loss. They believe
that consequences are reversible. They will repeatedly recreate parts
of the disaster in their play. These are all normal reactions.
Abandonment is a major childhood fear, so children need frequent
reassurance they will be cared for and will not be left behind.
Activities for home or school: play acting, physical contact, puppets, art, stories, large muscle movement (throwing balls, etc.).
School age (7 to 11 years)
Children at this age have the ability to understand the permanence of
loss from a trauma. They can become preoccupied with details of it and
want to talk about it continually. They may not be able to concentrate
in school and their grades drop. Since their thinking is more mature,
their understanding of the disaster is more complete. This can result
in a wide range of reactions: guilt, feelings of failure, and anger.
School age children can also slip back into earlier
behaviors. As in younger children, sleep problems can appear. Their
anxiety and fear may be seen in an increased number of physical
complaints.
Activities for home or school: play acting, puppets, drawing and painting, sharing their experiences in groups, reading, creative writing or discussion.
Pre-adolescence and adolescence (12 to 18 years)
In this age group, children have a great need to appear knowledgeable
and experienced to the world, especially to their family and friends.
When they live through a traumatic event they need to feel their
anxieties and fears are shared by their peers and are appropriate.
Because they survived the trauma, they may feel immortal. This can lead
to reckless behavior and taking dangerous risks. Their reactions are a
mixture of earlier age group reactions and reactions that are more
adult. Teenage years are a period of moving outward into the world.
However, experiencing a trauma can create a feeling that the world is
unsafe. Even teenagers may return to earlier ways of behaving.
Overwhelmed by intense reactions, teens may be unable to discuss them
with their family members.
Activities at school: general classroom activities, literature
or reading, peer helpers, health class, art class, speech/drama, social
studies/government, history.
How To Help Children
Routines
Children of all ages can benefit from the family keeping their usual
routines—meals, activities, and bedtimes—as close to normal as
possible. This allows a child to feel more secure and in control. As
much as possible, children should stay with people with whom they feel
most familiar.
Maid Marian's Save the Children Forum June 17, 2006 2:51 PM
Welcome to Maid Marian's Save the Children Forum!
Maid Marian is so adorable, isn't she? Throughout history, Maid Marian was portrayed as a character that has compassion and kindness towards those less fortunate. Children are our future and children depend on us to help them grow and become our future. We must protect them, feed them, teach them, and guide them through life's tribulations and life's joys. Some children have not the means to evolve easily. This forum is created for the purpose of all children and all the causes in which fight for their rights. Please add a portion to this chain forum~ if it is petitions, websites, articles, stories, donations, anything! We must be strong not only for our own, but for all the children who will one day be Earth's future. Hugs, Ami
