I would like to share with you one of the coolest things I have ever discovered on the web...
Neil Young has a page on his website where he posts anti-war songs. It's up to 700 songs so far. There are a few names you might recognize in there like Steve Earle anmd Robbie Robertson, but the vast majority are by people you have never heard of. Ordinary blue collar artists with day jobs who submitted their best protest songs to Neil for review.
It's a mixed bag. Different "players," different formats, different styles. Some of these songs are truly great and will blow your mind away. I could recommend some of my favorites, but it would be better for you to sample some at random, like I did, and discover your own. With 700 entries you can't possibly listen to them all...
And if you have recorded an anti-war song of your own-- submit it!! You'll be part of the greatest anti-war song forum on the web.
I can't say enough good things about this except, "click here:"
OK, i'm new here, so forgive me. Before I found this topic i had already posted about my song, "Bring em on" on Neil's site. Anyway, i'll figure out how this all works eventually I hope. : )

I will be back often to listen to more of these songs..
truely fantastic I have been trying to make a CD with songs about Peace so now I can make a few up - one song I would like to recommend is "Melting Pot" sung by a New Zealand group "When the Cats Away" really fantstic version I am sure if you can find it you will love it

Was it Cesar Chavez or Rosa Parks that day? Some say Dr. King or Ghandi Set them on their way No matter who your mentors are It's pretty plain to see That if you've been to jail for justice You're in good company
Have you been to jail for justice? I want to shake your hand 'Cause sitting in and laying down Are ways to take a stand Have you sung a song for freedom Or marched that picket line? Have you been to jail for justice? Then you're a friend of mine
You law abiding citizens Come listen to this song Laws are made by people And people can be wrong Once unions were against the law But slavery was fine Women were denied the vote While children worked the mine The more you study history The less you can deny it A rotten law stays on the books 'til folks with guts defy it!
Have you been to jail for justice? I want to shake your hand 'Cause sitting in and laying down Are ways to take a stand Have you sung a song for freedom Or marched that picket line? Have you been to jail for justice? Then you're a friend of mine
Well the law is supposed to serve us And so are the police When the system fails It's up to us to speak our piece We must be ever vigilant For justice to prevail So get courage from your convictions Let 'em haul you off to jail!
Have you been to jail for justice? I want to shake your hand 'Cause sitting in and laying down Are ways to take a stand Have you sung a song for freedom Or marched that picket line? Have you been to jail for justice? Then you're a friend of mine Have you been to jail for justice Have you been to jail for justice Have you been to jail for justice Then you're a friend of mine
Sometimes one finds protest gems where you would not expect them. In this case, the song comes from mainline country music. This song is several years old, but it carries a good message.
Wake up America
Wake up America I got a problem something you may not believe there is poison in the darkness spreading like a bad disease i never thought I'd find myself in this condition sitting by while children die from their addictions
(Chorus I'm just a small town i have no tongue to speak i have no arms to hold them while they're dying in my streets So I have to wonder does any body care. Lord is there any hope out there?
Wake up America I got a problem Venom flowing thru my veins I see families torn to pieces By crystal meth and crack cocaine Some of those sworn to provide us with protection Just turn their backs and cut a deal with the infection
(Chorus
all those years i gave them peaceful sanctuary now I'm a grave yard where the innocent are buried
(Chorus
Lord is there any hope out there? Oh is there any hope out there? wake up America i got a problem
[fading out]
i got a problem it's like venom flowing thru my veins

This song is about Guantanamo and its effects...
Without Chains by Patti Smith copyright 2007
For four long
years I wasn't a man dreaming chained with the lights on in another
world a netherworld four long years with nothing to say
thoughts impure at Guantanamo Bay
now I'm learning to
walk without chains I'm learning to walk without chains learning
to walk without chains without chains without chains
born in
bremen played guitar a young apprentice building ships loved and
married heard the call is attaining wisdom a pursuit of
fools journeyed to Pakistan to breathe the Koran taken in
custody no reason why then a prison camp as an
enemy Combatant
(Chorus)
Languished in a cell Four years
and a day Then flown home A version of free Chained to the
floor With eyes bound One last humiliation left to endure they say I
walk strange that may be so its been a long time since I walked at
all
now I'm learning to walk without chains to talk without
chains to breathe without chains to love etc... without
chains without chains without chains
I've always liked Patti Smith. It's gratifying to see that she is speaking out. (It's hard to believe she's 60 years old!)
"I feel responsible as an American citizen," Smith told the Associated Press in a telephone interview from New York. "It's a terrible injustice and I think it will be a stain upon us when history examines this period."
Thank you for this article! Patti is so dynamic and vibrant in both voice and vision- i agree. BTW, the actual song can be downloaded at her site that i linked

I’d like to say a few words In defense of our country Whose people aren’t bad nor are they mean Now the leaders we have While they’re the worst that we’ve had Are hardly the worst this poor world has seen
Let’s turn history’s pages, shall we?
Take the Caesars for example Why within the first few of them They were sleeping with their sister Stashing little boys in swimming pools And burning down the City And one of ‘em, one of 'em Appointed his own horse Consul of the Empire That’s like vice president or something
That’s not a very good example, is it?
But wait, here’s one, the Spanish Inquisition They put people in a terrible position I don’t even like to think about it
