petition charged for being lost in the forest December 15, 2008 10:25 PM

My fiance, Patrick Courtney, was lost on Labor Day weekend in the forest for 24 hours. He had a warming/signal fire. When he was found he told the investigators everything, where he was, what he had on him, and why he was there. They let him go home. Two days later a plane crashes killing the two people. three months later they arrest him for murder and arson. They state that in the State of California it is illegal to have a signal fire when lost and as a result of this illegal fire this plane crashed so they are charging him with murder. Since, his charges have been downgraded to reckless fire and 2ND degree murder however, it still is not right.... There are links to articles as well as a full recap of the story and final conclusion into the crash from the NTSB on the petitions website. This report concluded pilot error. It has been over two years and he hasn't been to trial yet. We need some support. His case will set a precedent for the State of California. If he is convicted this will mean that no one has the right to survive in the forest.... Please sign my petitions for Patrick! 1. Is so that he will not be given a third strike for being lost in the forest and having a signal, warming fire. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/no-3rd-strike-for-patrick 2. This one is so that we may have a better chance in him getting an O/R release. He has already been denied this once and now his bail is set at 2.2 million dollars. I feel this is excessive! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/let-patrick-await-his-trial-at-home

The Peace Ride Summer 2009 September 17, 2008 5:09 PM

http://www.thepeaceride.com/

                                The Ride

Slated for Fall 2009, the Colorado Peace Ride covers 230 miles of southwest Colorado’s most breathtaking scenery.

For avid cyclists and weekend enthusiasts, alike – or simply for volunteers who want to make a difference in the world – the Colorado Peace Ride provides an opportunity for all of us to contribute to world peace.

• The Cause •

By raising awareness and funds for peace workers, the Sophia Peace Center in Dolores, Colorado can offer rest and rejuvenation through various retreats specifically for individuals who participate in nonprofit organizations, giving them the much-needed support to continue their missions.

Much like the Colorado Peace Ride, world peace is a challenge. But crossing the finish line at this revolutionary ride will mean more than just a physical accomplishment. It will bring the world one step closer to real, tangible peace.

So get ready to ride

EarthPeace....my community to help create lasting peace in the world.. December 13, 2007 5:47 PM

Greetings everyone,

http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/earthpeace

I wish to invite you to my innoventive peace group called EarthPeace. We discuss not only talk about peace but we also showcase and use things to actively create peace. This community is a long-term project of mine and I will be showcasing not only my own ideas and sharing my own viewpoints in the community but also some of the most innoventive ideas that I happen to come across while I am searching for how the world could be made a better place.

This is something for all people who love nature, who are friends of peace and who are sick and tired of how things have been done in the past. Let us not only pray and hope for peace, but let us find a viable path to get from here to there and then walk it.

Even if you cannot participate still find it in your heart to join up to show that you stand for peace. Read a few of the ideas presented there and stay tuned for a website in the future to showcase a lot of this better. But get involved. Join up. Make a statement for peace. Send this link to your friends.

Peace First - Support Peace Building in Israel/Palestine November 16, 2007 4:51 PM

Peace First is an antidote to the disillusionment with the “Peace Process” of yesterday. We represent nothing more than positive action, determination and the knowledge that significant proportions of Israelis and Palestinians consistently voice their desire for peace in opinion polls. We unite with them and the many individuals and organisations in the region working to build trust, mutual acceptance and respect in the most trying of circumstances.
www.puttingpeacefirst.org
At the moment we are mainly concerned about Annapolis.
Have you heard about the Annapolis Middle East peace conferece? Where George Bush, Ehud Olmert, Mahmoud Abbas and other Middle East leaders will be meeting to discuss the Palestinan/Israeli conflict.
The Annapolis conference is an amazing opportunity for a just peace in Israel/Palestine.
However, many are concerned by the possible consequences should the attendees lack the strength of will to seize this opportunity.
We believe that another handshake, another photo opportunity accompanied by words of peace that are not matched by actions will mean that Annapolis has failed.
We fear the consequences if Annapolis fails. We fear for the Palestinian and Israeli peoples, for the stability of the Middle East region and for world peace.
We demand peace! Please join us in demanding peace by signing our petition which we will deliver, prior to the start of Annapolis to The Whitehouse, The Prime Minister of Israel's Office, the Office of the President of the Palestinian Authority and Downing Street.
Click on the link below, to access the petition. And please tell everyone.

Movement for a Just Foreign Policy March 16, 2007 11:12 AM

We just started a new group on Care2Connect dedicated to reforming U.S. relations with other countries from the grassroots. Our nonprofit organization was started last year by folks including Julian Bond of the NAACP, former Congressman Tom Andrews of Win Without War, and Robert Borosage of the Campaign for America's Future. Our mission is a foreign policy based on law, cooperation, and diplomacy (not based on reckless invasion and occupation, for example).

Our group will feature regular actions to influence our foreign policy for the better.  We look forward to seeing your ideas on how we might get from here to there. (You can see our website for examples of the kinds of actions we have invited people to take in the past.)

Hope to see you there! Peace,

MARCH on Pentagon! (or wherever you are!)

Stop the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Hands Off Iran!

Impeach Bush and Cheney for War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity!

Support Military Resisters!

ST. Patrick's DAY is not just about green beer anymore.

Join WORLD CAN’T WAIT -and a massive coalition of anti-war organizations to MARCH ON THE PENTAGON Saturday March 17
if not do what you can locally
to find or list an event http://www.unitedforpeace.org/
GREENSBORO NC rally -
Our honored guest who needs and deserves our support is Greensboro resident Pvt. Terri Johnson.

George Bush and Dick Cheney must be impeached for war crimes and crimes against humanity!
Millions are against the war, spying, torture, the abandoning of
Katrina survivors, a spreading theocracy and suppression of science—and want the whole disaster of the Bush regime to be brought to a halt.
The more we demand impeachment, Bush’s war options will grow more limited; the more his war crimes are exposed, the greater the impetus for his removal and repudiation. It is time we rise to this challenge in unity with each other.
The opposition to the war people feel in their hearts must become something they put on the streets. Resistance to the war from within the military by people like Lt. Ehren Watada and many, many others must be supported and encouraged by people outside of themilitary. The invasion of Iran MUST NOT HAPPEN. The people are on our side, the momentum is on our side, the whole world is on our side. The challenge: are we going to move heaven and earth to remove the criminal Bush regime, ending the war and repudiating the direction they’ve taken this society?

The following concerns our local Greensboro rally BUT the info about Mr. Kinane and his afiliated organizations is important for us all!
March 17, 11 am Downtown Greensboro, Governmental Plaza, Green St. http://ncwcw.blogspot.com/

AS U.S./IRAN TENSIONS HEAT UP, ACTIVIST ED KINANE RETURNSTO WAR TORN MIDDLE EAST (IRAN) I an very pleased that Ed Kinane will be joining us after just arriving back from this important trip.
Veteran peace worker ED KINANE will fly from Syracuse to Iran on Wednesday, Feb. 28. Kinane will be part of a 14-day civilian diplomacy delegation organized by the international peace group, Fellowship of Reconciliation. This 25-member friendship delegation is the third in a series of F.O.R. peace missions to Iran.... The missions work to build solidarity between the people of the United States and the people of Iran.
Kinane says, "These days saber rattling is bringing the world to the
brink of further war. We civilians can't sit by and let governments destroy us all."
A native and resident of Syracuse's southside, Kinane is a graduate of
S.U.'s Maxwell School of Citizenship. Since the late seventies Kinane has been active with the Syracuse Peace Council. In 2003 Kinane spent five months in IRAQ with the human rights group, Voices in the Wilderness. Kinane resided in Baghdad before and during the U.S. invasion. He returned to Baghdad several months later to report on the U.S. occupation....

America Says NO more troops!
Thursday, Jan. 11th

A Nationwide Surge of Protest Of The US Military Occupation of Iraq
President Bush is expected to reveal his "new strategy” for Iraq on Wednesday January 10th. Defying the mandate of Americans who voted in November to end the madness and begin to bring our troops home, he will call for an escalation in the number of US combat troops in Iraq. Let's deliver an immediate and direct response to the president’s call for escalation: NO!

Volunteers will host actions in cities and towns across the country within 24 hours of the president’s speech with a simple message: "America says NO more troops in Iraq!”

Peace Action June 13, 2006 1:24 PM

This is from (today)

There are exciting and profound developments underway in the Senate on Iraq!  Senators are finally offering legislation to stop the war in Iraq.  A vote in the Senate could come as early as this week when the Senate takes up the Defense Authorization bill. Click here to write your Senator today to sponsor and support legislation to bring our troops home by the end of this year.

Within the last months, four Senators —Barbara Boxer (D-CA), Russ Feingold (D-WI), Tom Harkin (D-IA) and John Kerry (D-MA) — offered legislation to bring our troops home from Iraq by the end of 2006.  While the details of the legislation differ, all these measures would move the United States Senate towards the goal of bringing the troops home as soon as possible and rebuilding Iraq.

Attitudes towards the war in Iraq are shifting.  While Americans are increasingly disillusioned with the war, for the first time, a clear majority of Americans – 60% in a recent CBS/New York Times poll – support setting a timetable for bringing American forces home.

Now the Senate, which has been slow to take action, is beginning to catch up with public opinion.  Over the past three years, no Senator was willing to offer legislation calling for a timetable for withdrawal. Today four Senators have finally taken that step.

This is good news.

If you agree, tell your Senator today to sponsor and support legislation to bring our troops home by the end of this year.  There could be a Senate vote on ending the Iraq War as early as this week when the Senate takes up the annual Defense Authorization bill may be considered by the Senate.  At that time, we expect a Senator to offer an amendment to set the December 2006 deadline for withdrawal.

You do not need to know the exact text of the language that is offered to get a message across to your two Senators to support bringing American troops home from Iraq by the end of 2006. We are working with the Senate offices to forge a common approach for the amendment.  The time for your Senators to act is now!

The vote we expect in coming weeks may be the most important vote in the Senate this year. This is our best chance to get an up or down vote in the Senate to change course of the war in Iraq.

It is imperative that you take action!  Join with many thousands of those who agree it is time to end the war.
Click here to write your Senators today!

I WILL NOT KILL anti-Draft Pledge for all young people -- pass it on! April 20, 2006 8:52 AM

I WILL NOT KILL is a FOR [Fellowship of Reconciliation] campaign led by young people who empower and educate their peers about the reality of serving in the military.

I WILL NOT KILL provides an avenue for young people to resist military recruitment and -- in the event of a draft being re-instated -- to become CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTORS. Young people up to age 26 are invited to sign the I WILL NOT KILL pledge [see below]. FOR keeps a record of their signature and the date on which they signed.  This record becomes a useful document in the event of a draft, when Objectors must document their history of Conscientious Objection.

The IWNK initiative also serves as a national resource to support individuals, especially young people and current members of the armed forces, who affirm the moral right to refuse to kill other human beings or to participate in armed conflict.

For more information about IWNK, contact FOR at Box 271, 521 N Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960, USA.

E-mail: info@iwillnotkill.org.

Web: www.iwillnotkill.org

[Here is the content of the form that one can get and fill out:]

As a young person concerned about my future and the future of all young people, I pledge that:

I WILL NOT KILL

I will not go to war.

I will not support war against other nations.

I will resist recruitment into the military.

I will encourage others to do the same.

[Sign and mail postcard back The FOR to be included in our registry of conscientious objectors.]

IWNK/ The Fellowship of Reconciliation

P.O.Box 271

Nyack, NY 10960

www.iwillnotkill.org

====================

Please go to that site to download the pledge to sign.

This is a fantastic idea! There is ALWAYS THE POSSIBILITY that the Draft COULD be re-instituted! and, this time it would include women too; as well as college students, and others formerly exempt {the military is getting desperate for cannon fodder}.

And, this time, you can also be sure, C.O. status, {Conscientious Objection} will be even more difficult than in the past, to obtain {the military is desperate for cannon fodder}.

C.O. status DOES demand, has ALWAYS demanded, a HISTORY of stating your anti-war, anti-killing principles; it helps if you belong to a recognized Pacifist religious group, such as the Quakers.

THIS PLEDGE SERVES AS A TANGIBLE RECORD OF YOUR OBJECTIONS, THAT YOU CAN SHOW THE DRAFT BOARD, RIGHT AWAY.

SIGN IT NOW, JUST IN CASE, YOU NEVER KNOW!

Please pass this on to EVERY YOUNG PERSON YOU KNOW; get it into schools, church youth groups, parents' groups, etc.

ALL the anti-military-recruitment groups should know about it, too. And every Peace Group on the Web.

I believe this is a new campaign started by FOR [the Fellowship of Reconciliation]. FOR is an old, established Pacifist Group, of which Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King, among many others, were members.

Peace of the Pie April 19, 2006 11:09 PM

Peace of the Pie Campaign

On Behalf of Mothers Everywhere

"Arise all women who have hearts, say firmly: Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn all that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience... In the name of womanhood and of humanity; take counsel with each other as the means whereby the great human family can live in peace." Click here to read more...
~Julia Ward Howe
,
From her Mother's Day Proclamation, 1870

1. On May 12th, tell Congress that PEACE wants a PIECE of the PIE!

Join us in this National Action on May 12th (the Friday before Mother's Day) and gather members of your community to take pies to your local Congressional offices with a banner; "On behalf of Mothers Everywhere, Peace Wants a Piece of the Pie!" as well as a downloaded national budget pie chart showing the tiny slice that represents the portion of the U.S. federal budget requested for the Department of Peace and Nonviolence.

Call your local newspapers and television stations and send them a press release (click here for media guidelines). Ask them to come and take pictures of local teams delivering the pies with Department of Peace banners. Bring your children, along with pictures they've made that convey their message of peace, and make it a fun and festive event! This is a great way to get attention for a very important endeavor.

Mother's Day was in part inspired by a woman named Julia Ward Howe who nursed the wounded during the American Civil War; she also wrote the Battle Hymn of the Republic. In 1870 she started a crusade to institute a Mother's Day as a Day for Peace. Click here to read her Mother's Day proclamation.

2. Host a 'PEACE OF THE PIE' Party.

To further empower our work for peace, host a Peace of the Pie House Party (and optional fundraiser) to spread the word about why citizens all over this country are taking pies to their local Members of Congress on behalf of the Department of Peace and Nonviolence Legislation. We want a small percent of the federal budget allocated directly toward funding projects that foster a culture of peace in our nation and around the world.

House parties are a key part of our grassroots campaign to spread our message and to raise funds for the campaign. They are also an important and fun way to identify volunteers and build momentum to pass this historic legislation. Invite your friends and family over for a Pie Party sometime just before Mother's Day (serve pie, coffee and tea), show our DVD, inform them about our work -- with help from materials we have prepared for you -- and invite them to an opportunity to visit their local congressional district office on May 12th. This is also an opportunity to encourage others to become a Peace Partner, our monthly donors sustaining the national campaign.

Winning Hearts and Minds November 15, 2005 11:28 AM

One half of the population, here and in the Middle East, are barely involved when it comes either to causing terror or preventing it. 97% of bombers and suicide bombers are male, as are over 90% of those conducting the so-called ‘war on terror’.

Maybe it is time to consider what women would do. In fact, the British government has signed up to the United Nations Resolution 1325, which is a worldwide agreement that will include women in the prevention and the resolving of violence. Why? Because all over the world women have shown that they are good at it.

In 1992, Dekha Ibrahim Abdi, a Muslim woman from the borders of Kenya and Somalia, managed to stop a clan war that had cost 1500 lives, by getting together with women from the opposing clan. This was not sewing circle stuff. She said, “If a member of my clan kills a member of your family, will you still work for peace? If you can’t say yes, don’t join.” They wee so successful in solving disputes that the Kenyan President gave her an office in Nairobi and she now teaches her methods in other parts of Africa. In Northern Ireland the Women’s Peace Party played a significant part in the Good Friday Agreement. Jo Berry, the daughter of a Tory MP killed in the Brighton bombing, sought out the man who planted the bomb when he came out of jail in 1999. They went through a gradual process of reconciliation and she now works with him, helping other victims and perpetrators of political violence to find peace.

Dr. Sima Semar, now Minister for Human Rights in Afghanistan, has for years systematically set up education and health centres for Afghani women and girls, knowing they hold the key to peace. Her offices have twice been blown up, but she says she is too busy to be afraid and continues her work.

When five warring clans in Somalia were unable to reach any agreement, Somali women asked to participate in the negotiations and were turned down. So, under the leadership of Asha Haji Elmi, and the women’s network Save Somali Women and Children, they formed themselves into a 6th clan. They have made a significant contribution to building peace in Somalia.

And so on, but invisibly. They are, it is thought, thousand’s of women’s peace initiatives springing up at grassroots level in the world’s tougher corners, and the London-based organisation, Peace Direct is setting out to document just how many thee are.

This is not to say that men are no good at peace-building; many have been spectacularly successful. It is simply that when it comes to terror, the female way of doing things, which can be done effectively by either sex, is under-used. The female way tends to invest more time listening to human needs, values the making of connections, and favours the use of respect, rather than the use of force.

Dear ACLU Activist,

This week the House of Representatives will vote to decide whether it will join the landslide 90-9 vote in the Senate for a McCain amendment to stop government torture and abuse.

With the support of General Colin Powell, and an array of other retired generals and admirals, the Senate voted overwhelmingly to end torture and restore the rule of law. However, the only way that the torture ban can become law is with the support of the House of Representatives. This week will be the House’s first vote ever on ending government torture and abuse.

The ACLU thanks you for your activism in helping to get this issue so far. We urge you to continue your activism by urging the House of Representatives on this one additional vote to help the McCain amendment become law. Click here to send an email to your Member of Congress to support the McCain Amendment.

The ACLU has filed a lawsuit on behalf of eight men subjected to torture and abuse under U.S. policies. Two of the plaintiffs are now in the United States to help our leaders and the public learn from firsthand accounts about the atrocities committed in our name. This story is featured Monday night this week on ABC's "Nightline." Learn more at http://www.abcnews.com/nightline. The plaintiffs and the Rumsfeld lawsuit will also appear in several major newspapers, including the Washington Post, and on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" on Tuesday.

Sincerely,

Caroline Fredrickson
Director
ACLU Washington Legislative Office

P.S. Learn more about the ACLU’s lawsuit against Secretary Rumsfeld and the thousands of pages of government documents on torture released under the Freedom of Information Act at http://www.aclu.org/rumsfeld

Thank you to the over 13,000 people who signed the  petition to protect the rights of mail order brides.

Today, CNN.com posted a front-page article on this issue and the proposed legislation. The article also tells the story of Natasha, a bride from Russia who was severely abused by her husband.

"He told me I was the most expensive toy he ever bought," said Natasha, who has since divorced and had her immigration case reopened with the help of a women's group after gaining official status as an abused spouse.

This week, Mallika Dutt writes about her own search to find and help trafficked women.  Learn about her shocking discovery that the easiest way to find detailed information about these women was through her own male friends.  Click here to read her full story.

While you're there, check out my latest blog which tackles the sensitive issue of developing solutions about human trafficking without involving the survivors - and how to include their much needed voices in the search for solutions.

Then, join us to call on Dateline NBC to cover trafficking in the United States. Raising awareness is just a first step. There's plenty more work to do.

TAKE ACTION:

Oprah's talking about the sexual exploitation of children. Urge others to do the same.

Call on Dateline NBC to take a deeper look at trafficking.

Progress, Growing Death Penalty Concerns November 04, 2005 10:14 AM

Friends:

With all the big news coming out of Washington, it’s crucial that we not forget about one of the most important political stories of this decade: the fight to restore the fundamental liberties lost over Patriot Act reauthorization.  We, and you, have been in a fierce struggle to bring much needed reform to this controversial legislation.

As you know, the House of Representatives and Senate have passed competing bills for renewal and these versions are set to be resolved in conference committee soon. This moment is our best chance to effect real reform. And our efforts are paying off.

The Bush administration thought they would be able to renew and expand the Patriot Act easily.  We — the ACLU and our activists and bipartisan allies — have made the measure controversial enough that opponents of reform can’t just steamroll a bill through.  Everyone expected a quick reauthorization this fall, but it is now November and we still cannot say for sure when the bill will reach the floor for a vote.

This is tremendous news and shows that we are winning the public debate.  This week, the nation’s attention turned to the alarming Patriot Act proposals for expanding the federal death penalty.  These new provisions would, among other things, allow prosecutors to dismiss a jury that deadlocks on a death sentence and replace it with successive “sentencing juries” until they get one to vote for the execution.  It would also triple the number of federal crimes that can be punished by death.

The ACLU is aggressively fighting these expansions.  Already, Mary Jo White, the former federal prosecutor who tried several al Qaeda suspects in the African embassy bombings, publicly opposed the measure. And we expect more prosecutors and law enforcement officials to come out against the proposal.

As public outcry over Patriot Act powers grows, both The New York Times and the Washington Post have weighed in unequivocally (something that doesn’t happen that often) against the House death penalty expansions.  To “get the right answer on the Patriot Act, it is critical that controversial, unrelated legislation be considered separately,” said the Post.  While The Times said “The House's simplistic vote for another ‘crackdown’ gesture can only further sully the notion of patriotism in a renewed Patriot Act.”

There is mounting pressure from an increasingly broad group of individuals and institutions to keep the Patriot Act free of divisive and unnecessary measures like the frightening changes to federal death penalty law.

Last month, for instance, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business leaders reached out to Congress and called for reforms to the Patriot Act.  In a recent press conference we stood with key conservative and libertarian allies in a bipartisan call for reform.  More than 160 representatives and 25 senators who have signed a “dear colleague” letter pressing their fellow lawmakers to support much-needed Patriot Act fixes.

Our fight is also making steady progress in the courts.  This week we presented oral arguments in our two cases challenging the constitutionality of “National Security Letters,” FBI demands for personal records issued without any review by a judge.

Our work on behalf of an Internet service provider reached the Second Circuit after a judge struck down one NSL power in the Patriot Act as entirely unconstitutional.  The newer case involves an organization with library and Internet records whose identity cannot even be disclosed because of a government gag order.  A lower court has already ruled that the gag violates the First Amendment.

International Marriage Broker Regulation Act October 23, 2005 8:56 AM

Human Trafficking is finally getting the attention it deserves - in Congress.

Many women are so desperate to leave their countries, they are willing to use marriage brokers in the hopes of "marrying up" into a  better life - and wind up caught in a ring of prostitution, slave trade and trafficking.

Right now, H.R. 3657, The International Marriage Broker Regulation Act (IMBRA), is being debated in Congress.

The bill helps protect women from abusive men and unscruplous international marriage brokers - and we can help ensure the bill becomes a law.

Click here to sign the petition to the Congressperson in your state and urge them to support this bill today.

Then, don't forget to watch the Lifetime movie event, HUMAN TRAFFICKING, airing Monday & Tuesday, October 24-25 at 9 PM ET/PT.

U.N. October 23, 2005 8:48 AM

October 24th is UN DAY, marking the date, sixty years ago, when the United Nations officially came into existence.

Across the political aisle in Congress and in the Administration there is broad agreement that the United Nations needs to be made stronger, more effective and better able to tackle the challenges of the 21st Century.

And, they need to be reminded that their constituents, and the majority of Americans, believe that the UN is a vital partner for U.S. interests worldwide.

American’s celebrate UN Day as a moment when our country pledged to join other nations in forging an organization designed to end war and promote peace, justice and better living for all mankind.

On this UN Day, make sure your member of Congress pledges to support a positive U.S.-UN relationship.

Members of Congress need to hear from YOU....Tell them to support the UN on UN Day!

+ TAKE ACTION TO KEEP THE U.S. ENGAGED AT THE UN

But, although there is agreement on the need for revitalization of the UN, there is a deep divide over the approach to take.

Before they decide, your representatives in Congress must recognize that the benefits we gain from our close partnership with the UN far outweigh the costs.

 October 19, 2005 4:00 AM

As the disastrous occupation of Iraq drags on, the demand for new recruits has risen while actual recruiting numbers continue to fall. The Big Brothers at the Pentagon want our youth’s information in order to more effectively target them for use in Bush’s wars.

You may remember that Peace Action helped thousands of youth to “opt-out” of sharing their personal information with pushy Pentagon recruiters, under the recruiting provision of the No Child Left Behind Act.  However, the Pentagon has now unleashed a NEW and even more alarming assault on the privacy of American youth!  In a desperate attempt to more aggressively target prospective recruits, the Pentagon is now contracting with private companies to create a massive military recruiting database full of extensive personal information on more than 30 million young Americans, between the ages of 16 and 25.  This invasive initiative is not only an alarming violation of all citizens’ privacy, but it conflicts with the federal Privacy Act and it’s also an ILLEGAL use of tax-payers’ money!

Unlike the No Child Left Behind Act, there is
NO WAY for youth and their families to “Opt-Out” of having their personal information collected in this database. There is no way for students to prevent their data from being collected by the Pentagon. Much of the personal information being collected (social security number, ethnicity, parent’s income, career interests, GPA and much more) by the Pentagons’ private data miners is acquired from surveys youth fill out for college admissions, academic awards program and other seemingly benign education-related purposes.

In response, Peace Action and the Student Peace Action Network are leading a coalition effort to “
Dump the Database!”  Along with over 75 national and grassroots organizations, Peace Action and SPAN will be calling on Congress to suspend this illegal database.  Please join us by contacting your elected officials and demanding that they stop this invasive, exploitative and illegal recruiting program immediately!

Pilgrimage for Peace September 10, 2005 1:02 AM

No longer invest your power into war, invest your intelligence into peace Setting out in silence, the Big Political Pilgrimage for Peace will take place in the Holy Land, visiting Israel and Palestine, and reaching its destination in Jerusalem by November 2005. Participants from the Middle East will join pilgrims from all around the world to journey in peace, share ideas, speeches, actions, meditations and work with other Palestinians harvesting olives. There will be concerts and also performances of the play, We Refuse to be Enemies, which addresses the Palestinian/Israeli conflict with great sensitivity. Culminating in a two-day seminar with Sabine Lichtenfels, co-founder of the Global Peace Village, Tamera, and its co-ordinator, Benjamin von Mendelssohn, the events will de-velop the work of this initiative, which seeks sustainable solutions to one of the most pressing problems of our time.

Benjamin von Mendellsohn said: "There are many historical and politi-cal facts that make the Middle East a crucial place in relation to the question of whether we’ll have a planet of peace or one of war." He views their political activities as the search for the right acupuncture point in the whole of the organism of the Earth. The Peace Research Village is based in Tamera, an ecovillage in Portugal, and it is working towards building a similar peace village in the Middle East for Israelis, Palestinians and for other Internationals. The aim is to actively research, study and create an effective and durable, non-violent, social model for a peaceful culture that can be replicated in other conflict areas. For many years, Tamera has hosted meetings and arranged visits to the Holy Land. It has been exploring the deep roots of the conflict including the historical and psychological approaches which have resulted in the ongoing development of solutions and non-violent cultural models for a new global Peace Movement.

On 9th November, the anniversary of the fall of the ‘Wall in Germany’, an event will take place at the ‘Wall in Israel’ in the hope that this barrier between neighbours will also be brought down in the near future.

I just recently started a new group the PPF, I feel that if our world is heading toward a one world govt, then we need a group of people to oversee them. Kind of like the UN. This is the first group that represents not just the planet but the universe. The By laws at PPF are as simple as the Ten Commandments, plus conservation, preservation, and human rights.

Folks it is ever so important we all get united at this time and think in one positive thought.

With everyones help we can make this possible.

The PPF is currently looking for ambassadors from other countries to post hot topics, news of the week that we the People can respond to and see that action gets taken.

I have posted some hot topics recently in the US, but we need others so that more can become aware of what it is really like out there. and with all people united in one sway we can do great things.

So Join The PPF(also stands for Past, Present, future) Folks this is groundbreaking . Let's work to build this together.

We hope that one day man will be able to see Beyond War

     Sincerely

William Assmus

Poets and writers February 14, 2005 4:42 AM

I particularly love Poets Against the War (www.poetsagainstthewar.org), which was formed in response to Laura Bush's cancellation of the White House celebration of poetry just before the invasion of Iraq. Ms. Bush didn't think poetry should be political, but Sam Hamill et al. knew otherwise. (What a hoot!) Thousands of poets from around the world posted verses and statements of conscience on the website within just a few days. Very inspiring.

PAW has produced a wonderful documentary and morphed into Voices in Wartime (www.voicesinwartime.org). Please take some time and check it out.

Fairbanks, Alaska, groups February 14, 2005 4:31 AM

The Fairbanks Coalition for Peace and Justice (www.myfairbanks.com) was established to try to prevent the U.S. invasion of Iraq and continues to work for peace and justice on the local, national and global levels. The group held weekly demonstrations for more than two years straight, through -30 degree weather and through our precious short summers.

FCPJ has sponsored film fests, concerts (Stephan Smith -- www.stephansmith.com), lectures and benefits, and was one of the first groups to support the important journalistic work of Dahr Jamail (www.dahrjamailiraq.com). FCPJ is currently working with other groups to establish a Peace House downtown.

No Nukes North (www.nonukesnorth.net) is an information clearinghouse and action group working against the dangerous and costly boondoggle that is Star Wars. Unfortunately, Alaska is home to missiles at Ft. Greeley, and land is being snatched from public use in Kodiak. Join the NNN email list for action updates.

VETERANS FOR PEACE  http://www.veteransforpeace.org  is dedicated to the abolishment of the use of war as an instrument of policy by non-violent means.  Membership is open to honorably discharged or currently serving veterans of any nation, as well as non-veterans as associate members.  Some VFP projects include the construction and operation of a health clinic in Viet Nam, rebuilding (again) destroyed water infrastructure in Iraq so children have safe drinking water, and VFP has also helped to facilitate the bringing of Iraqi children maimed by US bombing to the US for donated surgery and medical rehabilitation.

MILITARY FAMILIES SPEAK OUT  http://www.mfso.org  is composed of the families of service members working to bring the troops home now and end the occupation of Iraq.

LIBERTARIAN PARTY  http://www.lp.org  The Libertarian Party is the largest third party in the USA.  Pro-individual liberty, pro-business, and anti-war would sum up their philosophy.

Sponsored by World Peace, this project is calling for placement of Peace Poles around the world. A Peace Pole is a four or six sided pole with the word peace or symbols of peace on each side near the top. Check it out for examples of Peace Poles in different locations.
