PETITION TO STOP CHARARA PARTIES - Zimbabwe February 02, 2008 1:16 PM

Following the recent shooting of Tusker the elephant after the New Year's party at Charara, we (The Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force) have been inundated with emails from people who feel that any future New Year's parties at Charara should be banned.

If you are in agreement with banning the party, please go into the following website and sign the petition.

www.ipetitions.com/petition/stopChararaParties

The petition

"This petition is in support of closing down the Charara parties, following the enormous outcry from both the local and international communities about the death of the semi-habituated elephant Tusker as a direct result of the unacceptable behavior of some of the people who attended the 2007/2008 New Year's party at Charara, Kariba.

The death of Tusker is not the first animal death to be caused by human/animal interactions. We, the undersigned, feel it is unacceptable to hold a party of this magnitude in a wildlife reserve. The party attracts in excess of 3000 young people every year and it is difficult, if not impossible to control such a large crowd, especially when drugs and alcohol are accessible. It has been clearly proven that there was nobody present in a supervisory capacity to ensure that no animals were directly harassed by humans or to provide the much needed medical assistance in the event of accidents and drug related problems.

We fully understand and support the need for the National Anglers' Union to raise funds but we are requesting that another venue be found for the large parties catering for the younger people, one which will not involve the interaction of humans and animals and one where adequate supervision and medical support will be available.

We hereby request an undertaking from the Chairman of the National Anglers' Union that any party will not take place again at Charara site and that the following rules will be adhered to and enforced forthwith.
No loud music after 9pm
No feeding of or interfering with wild animals
No fireworks.

Please remember that all views and suggestions, positive, negative and neutral are welcome and are not necessarily the views of the organization.

If all the beasts were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beasts also happens to the man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth, befalls the sons of the Earth.

PETITION: Horrific Kosher Slaughterhouse in Uruguay February 13, 2008 1:05 PM

PETA has just revealed shocking video footage from an undercover investigation of a kosher slaughterhouse in Uruguay. Uruguay is one of the leading exporters of kosher meat to both the United States and Israel.

The investigation found that multiple workers at a time were struggling for several minutes to trip and then pin down terrified steers. A sharp metal spike was held against the steers' throats to try to keep them from struggling. Each animal’s throat would then be slit, and they would be suspended—hanging by one leg—while they bled to death. Frequently, the animals would still be conscious and writhing in agony as blood streamed out of their necks. Sometimes workers would even begin cutting apart the heads and joints of the animals as they struggled.

Despite the fact that caring Jewish leaders, including the Rabbinical Assembly (which represents more than 1,600 rabbis), have condemned this horrific cruelty, kosher authorities in the U.S. and Israel continue to certify meat from slaughterhouses that use this cruel slaughter method (known as "shackling and hoisting"). It's urgent that you click here to sign our petition urging kosher authorities to ban this slaughter method and thus bring Jewish slaughter laws closer in line with the Jewish principle of tsa’ar ba’alei chayim (not causing animals unnecessary suffering).

Thank you for all you do for animals.

Offshore Oil Plan
Risks Wildlife, Coasts

Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin (Photo: NASA)

Spills associated with offshore drilling can kill dolphins and other marine wildlife.

Save Dolphins and Other Marine Wildlife

Urge the Minerals Management Service to reject expanded drilling off our coasts.

Help us send at least 30,000 messages before September 15th!

Dear Jacinthe,

Ready to line our coasts with oil rigs that would pollute our waters, threaten dolphins and other marine wildlife and wreck coastal economies?

George Bush and Dick Cheney are making plans to do just that, and we’ve got less than two weeks to stop them!

Please urge the U.S. Minerals Management Service -- the federal agency accepting comments on the Administration’s plan -- to shelve the Bush/Cheney Administration’s latest offshore oil drilling scam.

As part of Defenders of Wildlife’s marine wildlife program and someone who has studied offshore drilling for more than three decades, I can tell you with absolute certainty that offshore drilling and sensitive coastal ecosystems are a dangerous combination.

  • Offshore drilling contaminates water, routinely spilling oil and toxic liquids into our oceans and releasing hazardous fumes into our air.
  • Pollutants like mercury and persistent hydrocarbons contaminate important marine habitat near platforms.
  • Seismic testing associated with drilling can cause dolphins, whales and other marine mammals to become disoriented and stranded and -- in some cases -- even die.
  • Massive spills that can result from drilling and increased tanker traffic can kill dolphins, seabirds, sea turtles, fish and marine mammals.

And while the environmental damage of offshore drilling may be significant, the savings to U.S. consumers would not be. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that drilling off our coasts would have "no significant" impact on domestic production until 2030, and even then “impact on average wellhead prices is expected to be insignificant."

Say “No!” to this awful plan: Tell the Minerals Management Service to reject calls for risky new drilling off our coasts.

Comments on the Bush/Cheney plan are due by Monday, September 15th, so please send your message today.

Respectfully,

Richard Charter, Defenders of Wildlife

Wild Animals in Circuses

Despite increasing public opposition in many countries, the use of wild animals remains common in circuses in many European countries and across the world.

Wild animals used in European circuses include:

  • Mammals – big cats, elephant, camel, guanaco, sea lion, zebra, antelopes, bears, bison, water buffalo, fox, giraffe, hippopotamus, hyena, kangaroo, primates, reindeer, rhinoceros, tapir and wolf;
  • Birds – emu, ostrich, parakeet, penguin, vulture, parrots and macaws;
  • Reptiles – alligator and pythons.

There are believed to be around 90 elephants in circuses in Germany and 400 big cats in circuses in France alone.

Thousands of wild animals are suffering in the circus - Stop it
Dear Jacinthe,

Tiny caged wagons, permanent transports, questionable methods of training and absurd “stunts” in the arena - thousands of elephants, tigers and other wild animals are suffering in European circuses. VIER PFOTEN starts an international campaign against this animal cruelty: Stop it! – No wild animals in the circus.

Please visit www.vier-pfoten.org/stopit and join the campaign:

  • View the films - this is how animals live in the circus!

  • Act now and send a RED CARD.

  • Document the suffering if there is a circus with wild animals in your neighborhood.

  • Show your face: send your foto for our picture galery.

Most of the 1.000 circus companies in Europe perform with wild animals; with devastating consequences for the animals, as they live under miserable conditions: Lions and tigers vegetate in small caged wagons or on tiny runs, highly social animals like elephants are kept alone and stand around chained up for hours on end. The results are strong behavioural disturbances: stereotypical behaviour, aggression or apathy.

Support a ban! Join our campaign and send a RED CARD. Wild animals are no clowns - Stop it!

Thank you for your support

  Hello Jacinthe

Moreton Bay's Ten Missing Jewels

It's crunch time for Moreton Bay's precious wildlife. Decisions about Moreton Bay Marine Park's future are being made by the Queensland Government right now - decisions which will effect the future of our dugongs, dolphins and turtles.

The final zoning plan for Moreton Bay must legally be completed this month, so its time for renewed action.

The Australian Marine Conservation Society has joined forces with the Queensland Tourism Industry Council and a coalition of conservation groups to launch The Ten Missing Jewels of Moreton Bay - a new report which identifies ten critical places in Moreton Bay that have not been protected under the draft plan.

We are calling on the Queensland Government to protect these precious areas in Marine National Parks zones, where our precious marine wildlife is safe from harm. We need your help today.

CLICK HERE to send your letter to the Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, Hon. Andrew McNamara, MP. Your letter will also be sent to Queensland's Premier, Hon. Anna Bligh, MP.

Please take five minutes to send your email today. The anti-conservation lobby are working to undermine proposed protection for the bay. Please make your voice heard today.

Super-sized for animal cruelty?Urge McDonald's to say NO to animal clones! As part of McDonald's recently launched 'See what we're made of' campaign, consumers are invited to learn about the ingredients that make up the restaurant chain's food. But will McDonald's super-size its menu to include animal clones? Now more than ever, animal advocates need to speak out and tell McDonald's that animal clones should not be part of its menu.

The government has recently reported that milk and meat from the offspring of cloned animals may have already entered the U.S. food supply, but a large body of evidence has shown that cloning causes tremendous animal suffering, and there is overwhelming opposition to animal cloning from the public, animal and environmental groups, and the dairy industry. AAVS has dedicated much time and energy to keep animals from being cloned for food, but we need your help!

AAVS is urging the public to contact McDonald's to ask the company to make a public pledge to never include cloned animals or their offspring on its menu. As a global food company that influences standards for the entire industry, it is important for McDonald's to take a stand against animal cloning. Please urge McDonald's to say NO to animal clones!

September 3, 2008

Speak Up for Florida's Wild Animals

Dear Debbie,

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is considering several changes to the state’s wildlife regulations that would affect freshwater turtles and captive wildlife. While these changes would be a step in the right direction, they are still not strong enough. Please urge the Commission to consider stronger changes to the rules.

Currently, the FWC is considering protections for Florida’s freshwater turtles by limiting the harvest to five per day. However, anything less than a complete moratorium on the commercial harvest could result in serious damage to some species. The Commission is also proposing beneficial changes to the current rules on keeping wild animals in captivity. But, the Commission needs to enact additional protections to ensure that these animals are kept in the wild, not in basements and backyards!

TAKE ACTION
The FWC will discuss these issues on September 17. Please take a moment now to send an email to the FWC to urge the strongest changes possible to these wildlife regulations. And don’t forget to tell your friends and family in Florida about how they can take action, too.

Thank you for all you do for animals!

TAKE ACTION, HELP SAVE SCOTTISH SEAS

We need your support to convince the Scottish Government to deliver effective protection for our seas and wildlife through the new Scottish Marine Bill.

This is your opportunity to make your voice heard and ask for a Bill that provides the essential protection that Scotland’s seas need.

Scotland has the longest and most diverse coastline in the UK. Our seas are home to half of Scotland’s wildlife. Yet less than 1% of Scotland’s seas are even recognised as important for marine species and habitats. Without better protection, we risk losing some of our most important marine wildlife forever.

Please take action by emailing Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond today!

Dear Jacinthe,

As a scuba diver, I revel in the rare opportunity to see a shark swimming in the wild. In fact, according to our new report, most scuba divers are willing to pay additional money to dive with sharks and other marine life. Sea the Value: Quantifying the Value of Marine Life to Divers shows that shark conservation has economic value and that divers have a stake in conservation efforts. Fortunately, the Shark Conservation Act of 2008, a bill which would strengthen protections for sharks, recently passed the U.S. House, and is now awaiting action in the Senate. But we need your help to get it passed into law, so write to your senator today to protect sharks.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge with rainbowThe Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is home to arctic foxes and caribou. It's the most important onshore denning habitat for America's vanishing polar bears. And, each year, millions of birds from all across the country make their way to this special place.

Yet, for all its unique beauty, the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge remains under assault. Year after year, Big Oil's high-priced lobbyists push legislation to industrialize this national treasure. Isn't it time that this special place got the lasting protection it deserves?

The oil industry and its allies have launched a new attack on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the danger is greater than ever.

Oppose drilling in the Refuge and support legislation that would protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge — and the special creatures that live there — from Big Oil's harmful drilling plans.

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne recently announced devastating changes to the Endangered Species Act, signaling the end of protection for thousands of imperiled species.

The Center for Biological Diversity is rallying an immense surge of opposition to prevent these changes from taking effect.

Tell Secretary Kempthorne what you think of his plans to pillage the Endangered Species Act.

Under the current regulations, federal agencies must consult with scientists at the Fish and Wildlife Service or the National Marine Fisheries Service to determine whether a project is likely to harm endangered species or habitat.

The new regulations would:

- Exempt thousands of federal activities from review under the Endangered Species Act;
- Eliminate checks and balances of independent oversight;
- Limit which effects can be considered harmful;
- Prevent consideration of a project's contribution to global warming;
- Set an inadequate 60-day deadline for wildlife experts to evaluate a project in the instances when they are invited to participate -- or else the project gets an automatic green light;
- Enable large-scale projects to go unreviewed by dividing them into hundreds of small projects.

And, because these regulations are administrative and not legislative, they won't need the approval of Congress.

We must stop Kempthorne from fatally crippling our nation's most successful wildlife law.

Join the Center for Biological Diversity's campaign to stop Kempthorne dead in his tracks. Send a letter to Kempthorne and let your representatives in Congress know how you feel about this by clicking here. Then take a moment to forward this message to your friends and family and help spread the word.

Sincerely,

Dear Dusty,

Izembek Refuge Wilderness Threatened Again.

Click here to take quick action.

One of the world's most critically-important resting places for migrating birds is found in the cold-water lagoons and internationally significant wetlands of Izembek National Wildlife Refuge on the Alaskan Peninsula. Virtually all of the world's Pacific black brant stop at Izembek to feed and rest. The refuge also is home to tundra swans, ptarmigan, bald eagles, and hundreds of thousands of geese, as well as threatened species, such as Steller's eiders. Plenty of mammals use the refuge too - including caribou, brown bears, wolves and wolverines.

We need your help to keep this globally significant wildlife refuge intact from a pet project - a road through Izembek's protected Wilderness being pushed by Alaska's congressional delegation: Senators Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski, and Rep. Don Young. Click here to say no to the pet project and yes to protecting Refuge Wildlife and Wilderness.

Your Senator sits on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee that will hold a mark-up of this bill this week. Won't you take a moment to urge your Senator to oppose this legislation?

Thanks for all you do for the wildlife and the wilderness!

Sincerely,

Kathy Kilmer

In 2005 Parliament took a brave decision to abolish aspects of an activity that the vast majority of the public in the country wanted banned. Fox Hunting, Stag Hunting, Hare Hunting & Hare Coursing was all banned by the will of a free democratic society. We now urge the Prime-minister and Government to continue its full support of the Hunting Act 2004 and ensure that its use is upheld. We also seek that the laws contained are clear for all to follow so there can be no doubts to the legal standing of the law.

The moratorium on offshore drilling expires on Sept. 30. Will you call Congress.

Hi Jacinthe,

New England's waters once contained a bounty of seafood, whales, dolphins and other wildlife.

George's Bank, Stellwagen Bank, Gulf of Maine . . . These places used to host some of the most productive marine ecosystems on our planet. But not anymore.

Many of New England's most important fisheries now hold only 10 to 20 percent of the fish they once held. Like the canary in the mine shaft, New England's fisheries should serve as a warning to our government about the dangers of overfishing.

Don't let the Bush administration ignore this warning. We have until Sept. 18 to make our voice heard. Send your comment today:

http://www.environmentamerica.org/action/oceans/comment?id4=ES

We have a chance to avoid the same collapse of our fisheries, and even a chance to bring back a vibrant ocean ecosystem to New England.

We can reverse decades of damage. All it will take is tough rules and tough enforcement to stop overfishing. The Bush administration's National Marine Fisheries Service must have all our comments in by Sept. 18.

Over the next month, the administration will finalize its fishery rules. Not surprisingly, big industrial fishing interests will oppose good rules. We've got to counteract them with thousands of voices.

http://www.environmentamerica.org/action/oceans/comment?id4=ES

With your help, we'll begin to restore our oceans' health.

As one of the most cosmopolitan syndicates on the planet, I respectfully submit that Procter & Gamble has a special obligation to set an ethical precedent. I have sincere reservations regarding P&G's claim that the company only experiments on animals "as a last resort" or "when required by law." Numerous accounts, including recent reports of pregnant rats being force-fed butylparaben (a product ingredient that's been in use for decades), indicate that P&G is not as devoted to animal alternatives as it would have consumers believe.

I acknowledge and appreciate the strides P&G has made thus far. However, I must remain committed to a comprehensive boycott of P&G products until all forms of vivisection are permanently discontinued.

Please make P&G a world leader in sensible, ethical practices by immediately instituting non-animal alternatives company-wide. Thank you.

Help Put an End to Overfishing

The disastrous effects of overfishing can already be seen in our world's oceans. An estimated 90 percent of all large predatory fish stocks are gone. More than half of all fish stocks are currently fully exploited, and an additional 25 percent are overexploited or depleted. If overfishing continues, we will lose not only fish species, but entire ocean ecosystems.

A proposal before the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMF would help, but critical loopholes remain. NMFS is accepting public comments on this proposal, and we need your help to ensure the strongest protection for U.S. oceans and their inhabitants.

For today's Daily Action, make a difference in our oceans by adding your comment to the public record. Ask NMFS to close the overfishing loopholes for the health of our ecosystem.

The deadline is coming. Just a few days to send comments to the Bush administration.

Hi Jacinthe,

Thanks to folks like you we have collected about 5,000 notes to the Bush administration in our campaign to stop overfishing. We will deliver those comments on Sept. 22.

We'd really like to double that number and deliver 10,000 comments. To protect our oceans -- from the red snapper in the Gulf to the cod off New England, to the endangered Pacific leatherback turtle and the right whale -- the administration needs to hear a resounding cry from concerned folks from all across the country.

If you sent a comment already, now is the time to send this e-mail to a friend. If you didn't send a comment, please get yours in today!

http://www.environmentamerica.org/action/oceans/comment?id4=ES

Our oceans expert, Mike Gravitz, tells me that he just got off the phone with the Fisheries Service. They said they are getting lots of comments asking them to weaken, not strengthen, the overfishing rules.

Those comments are coming from industrial fishing interests and their allies. We don't want our side to be drowned out in this debate.

Our vision for a healthy ocean ecosystem includes vibrant populations of marine mammals like whales and dolphins, large numbers of sea turtles and sea birds, and plentiful fish and shellfish -- a balanced ecosystems managed for sustainable fishing.

The fishing interests would rather keep oceans at the very edge of what industry scientists say is sustainable -- an unbalanced ocean with depleted populations.

Make your voice heard today, before this opportunity passes us by!

Thanks for making it all possible.

Save America's Wolves

Wolf crossing a river (Photo: Corel)

Sometime soon, federal wildlife officials are expected to rescind their previous plan to de-list the region’s wolves.

Urge federal officials to adopt a more responsible management plan for wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies.

Speak Out for Wolves

Dear Jacinthe,

I’ve got some great news!

Officials at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FW say that they plan to rescind the agency's plan to delist gray wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies sometime soon and place them back under federal protections.

Thanks to your incredible efforts and support over the last few months, the Fish and Wildlife Service has finally bowed to reality by recognizing that there are serious scientific and legal problems with their plan for delisting wolves in Greater Yellowstone and the Northern Rockies.

I am so proud of your efforts and grateful for your support in this fight. This important victory couldn’t have happened without the efforts of tens of thousands of Defenders supporters, our dedicated staff and our conservation allies.

But our wolves aren’t out of trouble yet.

Take action now. Urge Dale Hall, the head of the Fish and Wildlife Service, to protect wolves with a plan that ensures that responsible, science-based and balanced management will benefit wolves, ranchers, hunters, Northern Rockies residents and all Americans who care deeply about wildlife conservation.

The Fish and Wildlife Service, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana must now go back to the drawing board and come up with a new, more responsible plan to ensure that wolves are fully recovered with healthy, sustainable and diverse population levels before they are removed from the list of federally protected species.

Jacinthe, we need your help to ensure that common sense and sound science -- not anti-wolf extremism -- guides this new plan.

Help us ensure that this is a lasting win for some of America’s most beloved wolves. Please take action now.

With Sincere Gratitude,

Dear Jacinthe Vigneault

How you can help

Right Now:

Send a Message to NMFS supporting the overfishing rule.

Include in your message the need for stronger protection for ecosystems and forage fish.

Please Donate to the Network so we can push NMFS right to the deadline (September 21) to get the best possible rule that will end overfishing.

Thank you for being a supporter of the Marine Fish Conservation Network

Thanks to you, our message finally is starting to get through to the National Marine Fisheries Service. Now we need your help to make sure that our message is heard loud and clear by September 21, the deadline for comments on their proposed guidelines on ending overfishing.

With your support we can make sure that they get the message - We need a stronger rule.

The fisheries service has crafted a draft rule to stop overfishing that has incorporated much of what we at the Network have been saying since the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act was reauthorized almost two years ago. But to strengthen this rule and stop overfishing we need your help right now.

Your dedication to protecting our oceans makes our work possible.  Please donate today to help us continue this fight.

1. Sign the Stop Puppy Mills pledge

2. Please ask your friends to help, too

The stench inside the puppy mill was overpowering. Flies covered every surface of the warehouse, which was filled with cages of dogs and puppies. The sound of barking was deafening. As our investigator approached a cage he saw a terrified white dog, cowering in fear and trembling. Her body was covered in open sores, and her barren concrete cage filthy. She was just one of hundreds of dogs cruelly confined in this horrible facility, forced to produce litter after litter of puppies until their bodies simply give out.

Dear Jacinthe,

This story is just one of thousands that could be told about puppy mill dogs in Canada. The situation is urgent: the way these dogs are treated is horrible, and something all Canadians should work to put an end to.

Stop the Senate from Putting More Wildlife Habitat and
Natural Resources on the Chopping Block

Take Action

Dear Jacinthe,

Drilling for oil and natural gas, and mining for coal has already taken a dramatic toll on our country's public lands, wildlife habitat and natural resources.

Now, Congress is considering a proposal to develop a new dangerous energy source--oil shale-- for TWO MILLION acres of America's public lands!

Syncrude Oil Sands Mine, The Pembina Institute

Photo by Chris Evans, The Pembina Institute.

Oil shale extraction will yield impacts similiar to the syncrude oil sands mine in Alberta.

Please urge Congress to extend the moratorium on commercial oil shale development!

Oil shale production is 130% more carbon dioxide intensive than conventional drilling and gasoline production, which means it would continue to fuel global warming—the already single greatest threat to wildlife.

HERE'S WHAT ELSE IS AT STAKE:

Congress is moving in the wrong direction to break America's oil addiction.

Please ask your Members of Congress to be the difference that moves America's energy policies in a bold new direction.

Thanks so much for speaking up!

Keep Harmful Pesticides Out of Salmon Rivers!

Dear Jacinthe,

Click to Take Action

The federal government has the opportunity -- and the duty -- to protect people and salmon from dangerous pesticides. You know that the government is hearing from the chemical companies. Let them hear from you!

Three toxic pesticides used heavily in the United States -- chlorpyrifos, diazinon, and malathion -- can harm children and farmworkers, poison wildlife, and taint food and drinking water. Despite well-documented hazards, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows homeowners, farmers, and others to use these poisons in ways that harm salmon and steelhead.

Fortunately, a recent scientific analysis from the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMF could force EPA to adopt new restrictions on the use of these pesticides in the Pacific Northwest and California. In a draft study called a "biological opinion" released on July 31, 2008, NMFS concluded that chlorpyrifos, diazinon, and malathion are contaminating rivers and streams and jeopardizing protected salmon and steelhead.

NMFS is now working to finalize the biological opinion and determine what measures are needed to help keep these pesticides out of salmon waters. The chemical companies are lobbying to weaken these measures. The federal government needs to hear from you!

Please urge NMFS to adopt strong measures to protect Pacific salmon from these poisons. It is their responsibility under the Endangered Species Act. And by keeping these pesticides out of salmon and steelhead habitat, NFMS will also be helping to ensure that these poisons are kept out of our drinking water supplies.

Take action today!

                                Banner

Dear Jacinthe,

Our high demand for seafood has changed the way we fish. There are more ships at sea, there is more money fueling the fleets and advances in technology have brought about new gear and practices. Ironically, these "advances" have resulted in inefficient and irresponsible fishing. Bottom trawlers, longlines, and gillnets allow fishermen to catch unsustainably huge amounts of fish and other marine life, destroying the very resource they depend on.

After years and years of overfishing, the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMF has finally proposed a rule to combat this unsustainable and damaging practice. Unfortunately, the rule falls dangerously short in a number of ways.

Help Stop Overfishing Tell the Administration Its Rule is Not Good Enough >>

This rule is long overdue and has the potential to change the face of our fisheries management. The solution to the overfishing crisis can be summed up in three words: count, cap and control. These principles are noticeably absent from the Administration's proposed rule.

  • Count - count all of the fish caught, including the ones discarded at sea.
  • Cap - set a limit on mortality amount for all populations
  • Control - actively manage fisheries to end and prevent overfishing. This control must be paired with enforcement to ensure that management is truly effective.

Not only are the three C's missing, the rule also fails to set limits on domestic fishing of international species and it does not call for a full assessment of the rule's environmental impacts.

This rule will affect every fish stock and fishery in the United States. It's vitally important to get this rule right the first time around. Now that Congress has finally mandated an end to the problem, let's not waste the opportunity with a flawed proposal. Please take action today.

END OVERFISHING

Dear Jacinthe Vigneault,

Please watch PETA's new video about ritual sacrifice horrors during annual religious ceremonies.

The footage is from PETA's investigations of the Jewish atonement and sacrifice ritual kapporos, which is performed in Hasidic communities in the days before Yom Kippur.

In Brooklyn alone, more than 50,000 chickens are trucked in for kapporos ceremonies, in which chickens are roughly waved over people's heads and then slaughtered. The chickens languish without food and water and are stacked in cramped, filthy transport crates on public streets for hours. Many don't even survive until slaughter.

Many Jewish communities use money for kapporos instead of live chickens—the money is then donated to tzedakah (charity).

Rabbi Shea Hecht of the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE) runs the largest—and arguably the most inhumane—kapporos operation in Brooklyn. PETA has filmed some of the worst abuses and cruelest conditions at Rabbi Hecht's location. For more information on this practice and what you can do to help, click here.

Please write to Rabbi Hecht, the National Committee for Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE), and representatives of Beis Din of Crown Heights—the kosher agency that certifies this kapporos operation—to demand that Rabbi Hecht no longer use live chickens for this ritual.

Please also forward this important information to your friends and family.

Thank you for all that you do for animals!

Despite being banned in the Philippines since 1998, the illegal dog meat trade continues to flourish in certain regions, including Baguio City.

Humane Society International has been working with local police and animal groups for over a year to end this cruel trade and enforce the Anti-Rabies Law of 2007. But we need your help!

What You Can Do
Please ask the Mayor of Baguio City to stop the illegal dog meat trade for good—by cracking down on restaurants and vendors in his city who sell illegal dog meat.

Angela R      JUSTICE FOR DOGS AND PUPPIES BRUTALLY KILLED AND RAPED IN TURKEY
We were informed that hundreds of stray dogs dumped by the municipalities were found in the Mamak municipal waste disposal site in Ankara. Some of the dogs were already killed before dumping; puppies were put into sacs and died choking, while some dogs were tied by the legs and raped till they died. The photos of this cruelty are attached.

Act no 5199 is completely ignored both by the municipalities in Ankara and by the Ministry of Interior responsible for inspecting the municipalities.

Everyday, from all over the country, we hear about municipalities mass killing dogs. The petitions regarding the issue are not handled seriously by the authorities, no relevant reply is given and no solution is proposed. The municipalities insist on ignoring the Act no 5199 and its binding duties, and continue the slaughter. The Ministry of Interior responsible for inspection and administration of the issue neglects its duties as well.

Wildlife Alert

Our Food Shouldn't Poison Wildlife

Golden Eagle (Photo: Utah Division of Wildlife Resources)

A no-tolerance policy on carbofuran will help safeguard wildlife like golden eagles -- and protect the health of families and workers in America and all over the world.

Take action now to support the Environmental Protection Agency's bold action to protect wildlife, families and workers by banning carbofuran residue on all foods sold in the U.S.

Act Now!

The deadline for comments on this plan is this Monday, September 29th, so please take action today!

Help spread the word to save wildlife. Forward this message to family and friends…

Dear Jacinthe,

I have big news. Earlier this year and thanks to persistent pressure from concerned citizens like you -- the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced plans to ban carbofuran, a highly toxic pesticide used for field crops.

Now the EPA is taking the next step by moving to ban food with traces of carbofuran from sale in the U.S.

This is a bold, admirable move that will help wildlife, families and workers all over the world. Take action now to show your support for the EPA's plan.

In its decision to ban the sale of this pesticide in the United States, the EPA confirmed what scientists and conservationists have been contending for decades: carbofuran cannot be used without killing birds, bees, fish and other wildlife.

Now the Agency has concluded that even carbofuran residue on food poses unacceptable risks to public health -- especially to young children. It can also cause irreversible nervous and reproductive system damage to people who work with crops that are treated with this pesticide.

Thank the EPA for taking a strong stand to keep our children, wildlife and workers safe.

A million pounds of carbofuran are applied each year in the U.S.  Although this impacts less than 1 percent of the nation's farm lands, the pesticide is commonly used by developing countries that export rice, bananas, sugar cane, coffee and other crops to the U.S. and elsewhere.

This decision could have a dramatic ripple effect in the international community. Banning carbofuran residues on food sold to the U.S. will give developing countries a powerful incentive to stop using this deadly poison.

But not everyone is applauding the EPA's decision. FMC Corporation -- the sole manufacturer of carbofuran in the U.S. -- is currently suing the federal government for moving to ban the pesticide and has vowed to fight the agency's latest "no-tolerance" policy on food residues.

With such powerful corporate players fighting to keep this poison on the market, we need to be ever-vigilant to ensure this toxic threat is eliminated for good.

Please show your support for responsible regulation. Take action now to thank the EPA for continuing to take an aggressive stance against carbofuran and urge officials to do everything they can to speed its removal from the world market.

The deadline for comments on this plan is this Monday, September 29th, so please take action today!

Sincerely,

Caroline Kennedy, Defenders of Wildlife

September 23rd, 2008    More than 22,000 RED CARDS demand: No wild animals in the circus
Dear Jacinthe,

Our Stop it! Campaign got off to a great start: After only three weeks we had already received more than 20,000 RED CARDS. The website www.vier-pfoten.org/stop-it has been very busy. Over 200 portraits and statements have been uploaded to the picture gallery, and almost 50 photos and 10 video clips document how wild animals live in European circuses. Thank you very much for your support!

Next step - 40,000 RED CARDS on World Animal Day
World Animal Day is celebrated on October 4th. We want the suffering of animals in circuses to be a main topic on the day. Help us! We would like to collect 40,000 RED CARDS before World Animal Day:
- Send a RED CARD to the responsible politicians
- If you have sent a RED CARD already, tell your friends about the campaign and send an e-card
- Show your face and send us your Stop it! photo

Video clip “Hippo in Tub”
Watch the clip “Hippo in Tub”: It shows the sad reality of a hippo in a famous European circus. The animal suffers being isolated in a tiny cage with a small amount of water.
In the wild, hippos live in groups, mostly in the rivers and lakes of the African savannah where they also roam across large areas of land. In their search for food they cover up to 30 km per day. A little cage can never be a substitute for this.

Thank you for your support!

anonymous SEAL PETITION TO CAN CANDA'S 2010 OLYMPICS... September 25, 2008 9:42 AM

Hi everyone;

My petition against Canada's Olympics, (which you've all probably seen and signed by now) is taking up most of my time. However, I am logged in daily to our family here at Care2 to check messages and to sign all the animal petitions that come my way or in our main petition site.

The last 10 days, after most of you had had time to sign against Canada's Olympics, this petition gained ground of over 200 signatures in 5 days....and continues to grow daily.

So while I might not physically be seen around and about here, I am 100% visible to Stephen Harper (Canada's Prime Minister).

I will continue to send updates on how this petition is doing or just Click here to go to petition:

Stop the Eleventh-Hour Assault on Endangered Species

Target: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service
Sponsored by: Defenders of Wildlife

It may be the eleventh hour of the Bush/Cheney Administration, but that's not stopping their efforts to undermine the Endangered Species Act.

The Administration wants to make serious changes to this landmark law that would eliminate some of the most important checks and balances that protect our polar bears, wolverines, whales  and other imperiled wildlife. By striking at the very heart of this landmark conservation bill, these changes would severely limit interagency consultations and would prevent expert agencies from considering how greenhouse gas emissions affect endangered wildlife.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is only taking public comments on this proposal until October 15th. Please speak out now for polar bears, wolves and the nearly 1,400 species currently protected under the Endangered Species Act!

Ask Congress to Help Our Treasured Songbirds

Dear Jacinthe,

More than half of the birds species that breed in North America and winter in Latin America have declining populations. If we hope to continuing sharing our North American communities with Wood Thrushes, Bobolinks, and other treasured neotropical migratory birds, we must ensure that the birds find food, safety, and shelter in all of the countries where they make stops in along their migration. In 2002, Congress passed the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act to help protect these habitats, but now the bill must be reauthorized—and time is running out on the 110th Congress!

Take ActionE-mail your members of Congress and urge them to cosponsor the reauthorization of the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act (HR 5756/S 3490) to help save our songbirds!

The Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act supports conservation programs protecting migratory birds through habitat preservation, education, and research programs. The program is a cooperative, international conservation effort in Canada, the United States, and Latin America. Each year, the number of applicants far exceeds the available funds. At least 29 species of migratory songbirds have experienced population declines of more than 45% since the 1960s. Congress needs to renew and expand this vital and cost-effective conservation program.

We need to act now to save our declining songbirds. The longer we delay, the more irreplaceable habitat will be lost.

Take ActionPlease write to your U.S. Representative and Senators and ask them to support the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act to preserve the habitat of America's songbirds.

  Hello Jacinthe

Coral Sea Call to Action

Rising thousands of metres from the ocean floor, Australia's Coral Sea is made up of a series of underwater sea mounts, deep sea canyons, coral reefs and atolls. Lying east of the Great Barrier Reef and extending out to New Caledonia, the Coral Sea's abundant wildlife includes threatened sea turtles, whales, sharks, manta rays, seabirds, and large pelagic fish such as tuna, marlin, barracuda and swordfish.

The Coral Sea is one of the last places on Earth where large ocean fish have not yet been severely depleted.

The Coral Sea is also of huge cultural significance to Australians and Americans because of the Battle of the Coral Sea which took place during World War II. Hundreds of soldiers died in this historical battle.

The Australian Marine Conservation Society, in partnership with the Pew Environment Group and our conservation colleagues, has launched a visionary campaign to protect one million square kilometres of the Coral Sea in the world's largest No-Take Heritage Park.

Join us and support this vision by sending a letter to the Austrailan Government.

We are calling on the Australian Government to protect the Coral Sea in a No-Take Heritage Park, where all marine wildlife is safe from human harm. We need your help to convince our Environment Minister Hon Peter Garrett to protect this globally important part of the ocean.

to write your letter to Hon Peter Garrett,  AM MP, the Minister for Environment, Arts and Heritage.

Recently, you took the time to contact McDonald’s to ask the company to make a public pledge to never include cloned animals or their offspring on its menu, and we thank you! Thousands of others have also taken action, and AAVS is working with consumer groups to make our collective voices stronger than ever.

AAVS has dedicated much time and energy in an effort to stop the cloning of animals for food, but we need your continued support to do even more! With a failure rate of over 95%, animals languish in cloning laboratories as they endure painful procedures to produce just one clone, often suffering from illness, deformities, birth defects, and premature death.

As part of our End Animal Cloning campaign, AAVS is reaching out to more than 100 companies like McDonald’s, urging them to take a stand against animal cloning, and we are also working with government officials and legislators to end this practice. By donating to AAVS and supporting our efforts to end animal cloning, we will be able to do even more to help animals.

Your efforts will help make a difference for animals who suffer in cloning laboratories!/>

Urge Zappos.com to Stop Selling Fur!

Zappos.com, an online retailer, knows about the suffering that goes into every fur-trimmed garment or accessory, but the company continues to contribute to that suffering by using fur. With so many fashionable, comfortable alternatives available today, there is no excuse for Zappos.com to continue using the fur of tortured animals in its designs.

PETA has written to Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh and explained that animals killed for their fur spend their entire lives exposed to all weather conditions in cramped, filthy wire cages. We explained that fur farmers use the cheapest and cruelest killing methods—including suffocation, electrocution, gassing, and poisoning—and that these often ineffective methods sometimes leave animals still conscious when they are skinned.

Please join us in urging Zappos.com to follow the lead of other designers and retailers—including Nike, Kenneth Cole, Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, J. Crew, Gap, Stella McCartney, and others—who have already adopted permanent fur-free policies.

Please use the form below to send an e-mail to CEO Tony Hsieh asking him to remove fur from the Zappos.com Web site permanently!

Armani using Rabbit Fur Again! October 03, 2008 11:06 AM

Tell Armani to Keep his Fur-Free Pledge

Armani has begun using rabbit fur in his designs. Last year, Giorgio Armani told Time magazine, "I spoke with the people from PETA, and they showed me some materials that convinced me not to use fur." Mr. Armani was then added to our list of fur-free designers, which includes Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Kenneth Cole, and Stella McCartney, just to name a few.
Now, however, Armani has gone back on his word. His latest collections include fur-trimmed jackets, fur-hemmed skirts, floral-printed fur coats, and even fur-trimmed snowsuits for babies.
Armani has an odd obsession with rabbit fur, and two weeks ago, he refused to meet with PETA Vice President Dan Mathews in Milan to see disturbing undercover video footage of rabbit fur farms. Since Armani has refused to hear animals' side of the story, it is now time to see if he will listen to the public.
Please contact Giorgio Armani and urge him to keep the promise that he made by permanently removing all fur from his collections.

Protect Sage-grouse Today!

Dear Jacinthe,

Greater Sage-grouseOne of America's most spectacular birds—the Greater Sage-grouse—is imperiled. Its population has declined as much as 93% from presumed historic levels due to habitat loss, the invasion of exotic species in the sagebrush steppe ecosystem, the pressure of drought, and the upswing of West Nile virus. Now, a new threat—accelerated oil and gas development in the bird's shrinking habitat—has stressed the Greater Sage-grouse population almost to the point of no return.

The governor of Wyoming, in the heart of the sage-grouse's habitat, recognized the need to protect this bird and released an executive order to conserve Greater Sage-grouse on state lands. Unfortunately, similar protections are absent on federal lands in Wyoming and other western states. It is now up to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to follow Wyoming's lead and give the sage-grouse a fighting chance. Instead, the BLM is continuing to sell mineral leases in core sage-grouse areas without necessary protections.

Take ActionPlease e-mail the director of the Bureau of Land Management and urge him to adopt the executive order on sage-grouse conservation.

The unbroken sagebrush country that provides crucial habitat for the Greater Sage-grouse is one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes of the Rocky Mountain West. Places such as the Red Desert, the Upper Green River Valley, and the Powder River Basin support the sage-grouse and numerous other sage-dependent species such as pronghorn, the pygmy rabbit, and the Long-billed Curlew. The unchecked energy development now gripping the intermountain West is exerting tremendous pressure on these species.

Based on months of work by community leaders and conservationists, the newly released executive order puts the BLM on notice that it must protect the grouse and the landscapes that support it. With the order's release, now is the best time to contact the Bureau of Land Management and urge the agency to step up to the plate and implement a conservation plan for the Greater Sage-grouse.

Greetings Jacinthe,

We've made tremendous progress in the Great Bear Rainforest.  In 2006, the province of British Columbia announced a huge protection package for the 15 million acre (6 million hectare) region, to be implemented by March 2009.  Now, the province must Keep the Promise they made to the world.  With only six months left to meet the conservation deadline, our continued action is more important than ever.

Please, take a moment and encourage Premier Gordon Campbell to keep the promise to protect the Great Bear Rainforest.

Thanks to your support this past spring, BC legislated the protection of five million acres (2 million hectares) in the Great Bear Rainforest.  Now, with sustained effort, we will ensure the designation of 720,000 acres (290,000 hectares) in logging-free biodiversity areas and a regional plan for achieving low impact to the rainforests outside the protected areas.

Your action makes a difference.  The Great Bear Rainforest is a place of great hope in a world that need a successful model for how to protect large areas of Endangered Forests.  Take a moment to send a letter to Premier Gordon Campbell now.  Tell him to keep his promise: Protect the Great Bear Rainforest!

Thank you for taking action,

County Officials Conduct Cruel 'Experiment' on Homeless Shelter Dog

When PETA received complaints accusing Clay County, Florida, officials of intentionally placing a dog from the county animal shelter in a closed vehicle and leaving the animal there for an entire hour in mid-afternoon heat, we almost couldn't believe it. But internal county documents and news reports confirm that county officials did indeed conduct this outrageously cruel "experiment" on a dog in their custody to "recreate" the conditions believed to be responsible for the September 10 death of another dog in their care, a Rottweiler named Diamond. Diamond died of apparent heat-related shock after Clay County Animal Control (CCAC) Office r Billy Wilson left her in an animal control vehicle—without air-conditioning or even access to water or fresh air—on an 85ºF day.

Everyone knows that even just a few minutes in a car on a summer day can be harmful and deadly. Leaving animals in closed vehicles is explicitly addressed in the criminal codes protecting animals in several states. However, Wilson's improper conduct pales in comparison to Clay County's public officials' willful decision to cause intentional torment to a dog in an utterly unnecessary and crude experiment.

PETA is calling on the state attorney's office to launch a criminal investigation into the incident. We are also filing a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) calling for an investigation of the experiment and asking the agency to file all appropriate charges at the federal level. We believe that the experiment was a violation of federal law because it was not conducted in a USDA-approved facility, nor was it screened by the required oversight committee.

The current whereabouts of the dog who was used in the disgraceful experiment are unknown. We also do not know if he or she received appropriate—and surely needed—rofessional veterinary medical care.

You Can Help
Please join us in contacting the Board of Commissioners of Clay County, Florida, today. Urge the Board to do the following immediately:

  • Outfit all Clay County Animal Control vehicles with air conditioning
  • Institute an enforceable policy prohibiting officers from putting animals' lives at risk during transport
  • Join PETA in officially requesting a criminal investigation into this serious matter
  • Release information regarding the whereabouts of the dog used in the experiment as well as verification that he or she has received veterinary attention

Hi Friends,  I really need your help.  A notoriously cruel circus is scheduled to be in my county on Oct. 28 - 29.  I already have a massive demo organized, but I want it cancelled before it ever gets started.  The Cole circus has had employees prosecuted for child rape, negligent homicide, burglary, and the list of horrible animal abuse is documented going back decades.

I don't know how to do this any other way, so I hope this is not too much trouble.  Can you please cut and paste the following letter in an email and use the email addresses for the Property Management Company and the Investor Group?  Thank you so much for your help.  Sometimes financial losses are the only way to get the abusers' attention.  Camille

The Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) is an agreement among people and between nations that animals feel pain and can suffer and that their welfare should be considered. One million people have already signed the petition calling for a UDAW. By signing for the UDAW, you are recognizing that we have a responsibility to put an end to animal cruelty.

Similar to previous UN Declarations on global issues such as human and child rights, the UDAW would act as a catalyst for change and would be a ground breaking step towards improvements for animals all around the world.

Please sign Petition: Romania - horses beaten before eyes of veterinarian authorities: November 21, 2008 7:59 AM

Link to video and petition...

http://aspcacommunity.ning.com/group/animalcrueltypetitions/forum/topics/please-sign-petition-romania

Even though under the Romanian law the animal cruelty is considered an offence, acts of animal cruelty continue to happen even before the eyes of authorities that paradoxically are in charge of enforcing the animal protection law.

The shocking footage broadcasted by the Romanian TV station Realitatea, on August 3rd 2008, shows horses bestially beaten in the animal market Godinesti - Gorj - before the very eyes of veterinarians of the local veterinarian authority - DSVSA Gorj.

I signed the petition regarding the beating of the horses in Romania. I was interested in joining the Animal Cruelty Petitions group, but could not figure out a way to do it. The only screen I could get to was for the ASPCA Community Online group, but I'm not sure I want that, I don't want to just discuss various animal stories, I want to sign the petitions.  Anyone know anything about how to become a member of the Animal Cruelty Petitions group?  Thanks.  Love, Eden

I dont know how many members read all the petitions in this thread, but I need poeple to read my petition and sign it , this research that my petition is asking the federal government to fund is endorsed by PETA. Ingrid Newkirk has put up a 1million dollar award for the first one to get this meat on the market. This is a petition asking the federal government to fund NEW HARVEST a non profit organization who are very successful in this research. they simply need funds to continue and get this meat available in a timely manner. with President elect Obama being sympthatic to animal welfare I believe if enough poeple sign this petition federal funding will be awarded to NEW HARVEST for thier research. The founder of NEW HARVEST has been a Vegan for over 20 years, so if he is involved in this research it seems logical he feels this is a vital way of saving billions of lives of animals being raised for food. It is also will improve our eviromental issues as no animals are rasied for this meat, it will also be healthier meat so will help reduce many of the health factors involved in eating meat, and it will help to feed billions of starving poeple as no animal is being raised to produce this meat, the crops can than be used for human consumption.

Please check out this research and whether you are vegetarian, vegan or just concerned with humane treatment of farm animals this is vital research that needs to be done and completed.

a new and important petition to sign November 24, 2008 9:51 AM

I know this petition may seem unrealistic and even rash. but someting has to be done about raising animals for food. Our world issues with hunger, health, enviroment not to mention the cruelty of eating animals is becoming more and more critical. Something has to be done. It is time that raising animals for food becomes as socially shunned as smoking, rape, murder, child abuse or animal abuse. It is going to take having something done on the government level to change peoples attitudes and get change to take place.
This petition is not asking that meat be banned, there are alternatives to producing meat other than raising animals for it. It is simply asking that raising animals for food be banned. we need to continue to fight for people to not eat any meat but we need to at least get raising animals for food to become socially unacceptable.
Pleae sign this petition and send to friends and family. Pray that this petition will get enough signitures and that the goverment gets the point we are tired of animals being raised for food.

thank you for signing this petition

Thank you Julie for starting this petition, which I was only too happy to sign. From this moment in time banning the raising of animals for food seems like an impossible dream, but we have to begin somewhere. All reforms in society's "normal" and accepted practices begin with the first step.  Love, Eden

I also know there has to be at leasst 500 who would want to see cultured meats replace animals being raised for food. Stop EU Subsidies to Livestock Industry - PETITIONAnimals  (tags: )

The petition has the purpose to both bring forward this issue with the European Parliament and to raise the matter in various areas, because not enough attention is ever put to how damaging the practice of farming is and how therefore unacceptable.

petition to stop the use of meat and dairy in commericals February 15, 2009 9:05 PM

<p>I believe as veg/vegans we should not have to be subjected to commercials that use meat and dairy in their advertising. I know it upsets and sickens me to see such commercials. I have put together a petition to be sent to The Food Standards Agency requesting that meat and dairy not be allowed to be used in commercials on TV, radio, magazines, or any public display. I think as veg/vegans we should have the right just as non smokers do not to have this pushed in our face.
Please sign my petition if you find these types of commercials unacceptable to you.

UK petition (also for ex-pats) July 04, 2009 12:17 PM

This was posted on one of my Yahoo groups yesterday.

'Hi I wonder if any of you would suppport Lisa at my local animal welfare shop,
 http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/petshops/

she is petitioning for pet shops selling rabbits to have them vaccinated first, as she believes the relevant act asks for. She is pressurising our local authority to bring into being this law, and has met with our local MP today.

Please would you consider passing it on to any others you think may be supportive.'  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
