Metal rock band uses animal parts in their shows August 16, 2006 12:54 AM

Photo#1, Photo#2), which took place this past weekend (see previous BLABBERMOUTH.NET report).

"I think it's very sad that animal parts were used on one of the stages," Animal Rights Sweden chairman Per-Anders Svärd (photo) told the Swedish newspaper Östran/Nyheterna. "The festival organizer should have put a stop to it. You diminish the value of animal life by doing this. You sacrifice animals and you use them as props in a show for entertainment shock-value purposes. That's the worst part, I think.

"MAYHEM obviously wanted to be the most extreme band at the festival. This incident only reaffirms the way society views animals, which is that animals can be used and treated in any fashion. You deny that the animal exists for its own purpose.

"A lot of people obviously think that animals are creatures humans have the right to use as they see fit. You disregard the fact that animals actually are individuals with feelings."

Per-Anders Svärd emphasizes that there are exceptions.

"Dogs and cats get the respect they deserve. What if MAYHEM had brought with them mutilated dog and cat carcasses to Hultsfred [where Gates of Metal was held]? Then every journalist in Sweden would be calling me right now. But now we're talking about pigs and sheep and then it's apparently not as interesting."

Per-Anders Svärd believes that pigs, sheep, cows and other mammals should be treated the same way as dogs and cats.

"In principle, there is no difference between these animals. Life is probably the same for most mammals."

Using animals for experimental purposes and killing a pig and displaying it onstage is, from an ethical standpoint, as bad as eating meat, according to Per-Anders Svärd.

"I advocate vegetarianism," he says.

Per-Anders also says that he loves hard rock.

"I haven't been to Gates of Metal, but maybe I'll go there next year. Then I will bring with me a protest placard so that people can see what my views on bringing dead animals onto a music stage are."

Per-Anders Svärd wants promoters to disregard bloody bands like MAYHEM.

"Book some vegetarian hardcore bands instead," he says.  [ send green star]

I think the organizers of these festivals should ban bands who blatently have no respect for life, animals deserve the same respect we would expect for ourselves, they are loving feeling, sentient beings, and this sort of behaviour sets a really bad example to their fans.

Love and Respect to all life,

Muriel.

Well said Muriel, exactly

Why wasn't the show just stopped?

There is no excuse for what the band did or for anyone who could have stopped them from doing it once they saw what was happening.

Obviously and unfortunately, the guy is right. Had they waved around the carcass of a lovely little kitten or puppy, everyone (that wasn't all drugged up or hammered) would have gone ballistic. But a pig....? "Pfffttt....Please....I had that for lunch." Sad but true...Far too many people have been conditioned to be indifferent to the treatment of such creatures. Still, there are plenty of "veggie" bands out there , as Nick has pointed out before..., haven't ya, Nick ?  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

well the beginning factor these losers do this is (and maybe not all heavy metal) but most invoke violence...just look at them.....degenerates, disgusting and the people who go to these metal concerts are followers of these putrid examples to the youth and adults in society that are not in the best state of mind I would think...Heavy Metal is and has always been violent, rude, crude and socially unnacceptable.

this should never have been allowed, it should have been stopped immediately and them arrested....or something.......of course the promoters probably only care about making money and should be put out of business for promoting this evil crap

this states the promoter did know know about the laws regarding this, BUT he apparently knew it was going to happen or did nothing to stop it...he says it is regrettable...yes because now they are in trouble....next year.....hope there is no next year for this so called metal festival....

from report

— a violation of the Swedish animal by-product regulation.

"It's illegal to handle animal parts in this manner," Hanna Werthén, administrative officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries, told the Swedish newspaper Östran/Nyheterna. "You may use animal by-products for educational purposes or in an artistic context, but in that case you need a permit from us first. We have not received an application from the festival promoters in Hultsfred. Therefore we will take action. Exactly what will happen I can't say at the moment, but it may very well lead to prosecution."

"The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries called me to inform me what regulations apply in a situation like this. I actually didn't know that these rules existed," says the festival organizer, Olof Wikström. "But the situation is what it is, and all I can is that it is regrettable. Now we await the pending investigation. It's very regrettable that it turned out this way, but at least we learned something new for next year's festival.

I've been to a couple "heavy metal" concerts in Philly, and they were NOTHING, and I repeat NOTHING like this!!!  Sure, they cursed a lot and were quite possibly drunk as crap-but the show was good and they even closed the show stating be good to ALL living things......

Such a shock August 17, 2006 6:17 AM

Marlene, I like music, and I must admit I do like heavy metal music too, but I have never liked Ossy Obourne or Alice Cooper because of their abuse towards animals, and they pass that attitude of lack of respect to animals to their fans I believe - not all heavy metal bands are bad like this scum Mayhem.

Ross I wasnt too sure whether I should have posted this one and the horse one, its getting so upsetting seeing all of these on the internet but I just thought that we needed to see what was happening- particulary in the music industry over there, I got such a shock to see the bands using the poor animals parts that I just posted it to show everybody else what was going on. I believe we have to look at it, to fight these atricious abuses of animals.

What a sick metal rock band, how this evil band was not sued and jailed is beyond me.  People like this have no place in our society and I would have liked the organisers to have been sued as well.

It is like committing little animal murders just to be part of this disguisting show I feel sick just thinking about it.  Sue
